Over fifty years ago, my Dad would roll up newspapers, tie them with string, and store them in the rafters in the basement.
We were without power for at least a week during a winter ice storm in the early '70's.
Burning Dad's "paper logs" in the fireplace kept us warm until power was restored.
That is so cool. A resourceful Dad!

I save the detergent bottles with the spout to take camping for an outdoor shower. I spray paint them black and fill and leave in the sun all day. When shower time comes the water is good and hot. Also we wash and rinse dishes with them too

Saving old clothes as material, to make clothes in the future, when there's no place to buy the material.
Old clothes would make great quilts, window quilts and kids clothing.

A couple of my grandma’s old quilts that she used jeans of my grandpa’s and his overhauls and made heavy, heavy quilts
unwearable t shirts cut into strips make nice ties for stake vegetables in the garden
Anyone over 50 has been saving most of this stuff since we we're 20. Things our parents did and it stuck.
We get a plastic 2 1/4 gallon publix cat litter and clean it out well, and I used them to store water. Came in handy when we broke a pipe and couldn't flush. They came in handy. We had about 50 of them ready to go.

My mom has been storing stuff in cat litter buckets and it makes so much sense to me! They're clean, you just wipe them out from dust, water proof, sturdy and they usually have a good handle on them.

I keep liquid detergent containers. Add water and few drops of clorox and write ,to be used for washing hands or add water for flushing . Got them stored in all bathrooms
I've been Prepping since the late 70's and I have a few different camp stoves with quite a bit of fuel for each. I live on my farm so I have plenty of firewood and a few fire rings. I buy soda pop in glass bottles once in a while and save them. They can store water till you need them to put homemade ketchup in. Most of my dry foods and other dry stuff I keep in large airtight totes. I also store liquid cleaning supplies in large totes and I store liquid foods like ketchup, mustard, etc in large totes. I have a butt load of first aid supplies in large totes. I store sugar, potato flakes, powdered milk, etc in new 50cal ammo cans with rubber seals to keep out rodents and moisture. The expense of the cans is nothing for keeping those foods fresh. Keep Prepping my friends.
Good ideas JR , I take the plastic coffee container put a roll of toilet paper in it stash it behind the seat of my truck, for my own SHTF moment on the road ! 😂

I do every one of these! Also want to add if that’s ok : the bags that grocery stores use for bags of oranges or potatoes, can be combined to create a sponge for cleaning dishes etc

You’re giving away all the good freebie finds 😂😂 every time I go to the store I grabbed a stack of the free newspaper and real estate paper ads out front. And even if they’re not free, your grocery store’s deli will probably have food grade buckets with lids which are perfect for storing dog and cat food in! Great post JR!

Thanks JR, Brother your the best. While this is not something that most people would consider as a prep, your health is very important especially if medical care is no longer available. Well this is probably the strangest prep you'll hear about, but here goes, I went for a colonoscopy this morning. There's no denying that prepping for this really sucks, but I'm now glad I did it. They removed a polyp that left unchecked could turn cancerous. Get your health in order, get your house in order and get right with our Lord, really bad times are coming.
As a kid I grew up using bread bags to keep my feet dry in snowy Indiana winters.
I reuse and reseal 24 oz spaghetti jars for dry beans. I use an Avid Amour vacuum sealer I found on Amazon but sealing isn't necessary for short-term storage. One pound of dry beans fits perfectly in the jar. No worries about mice.
Many states have websites where you can order free road maps. I bundle several maps from my surrounding states together and vacuum seal them to keep them clean and dry. They fit nicely in a glove box or bug out/get home bag.

I worked in bakeries for years. I still get free empty buttercream 5 gallon buckets at grocery store bakeries. All you have to do is ask nicely

J.R. they are called "Deli Containers". You are correct, they are great. They are designed to hold liquids or "liquidy" stuff, so the lid lock really well.

I enjoy your channel very much and I appreciate that you’ve found the balance between being realistic and encouraging. Some channels just promote the idea that the sky is falling and make everything seem as if it’s hopeless, others just seem to have their heads in the sand. You provide solid common sense information.
I collect every free bag the dentist gives me.
I save candle stubs (last inch or two) to use for fire starters. I've managed to get a fire going in moderate rain while camping by making sure that they are somewhat covered by other wood (at least a couple inches above). Light the candle and feed thin kindling in over the flame. The candle will burn for several minutes - lots of time to get things going

I get the free little newspapers and also take home the papers from work that would just get tossed. I never lack for fire starters.
Your last point is one I think many peppers ignore, that is, getting as fit as you possibly can. I’m a senior with several health issues and a disability but I work on upper body strength and stretching etc to try and be as fit as my body allows me to be. I’ve seen a lot of very obese people showing off their guns, food preps etc but their weight will be an enemy to their survival if and when the shtf. I know some people argue that their fat reserves whelp them survive but they are just kidding themselves sadly. Get as fit and strong as you can possibly be! This is a free prep that will put you miles ahead of all the overweight people out there struggling to survive.
Overweight people can get dehydrated more quickly, too. Lean tissue carries more water.

I have a glass jar full of assorted nuts and bolts that was my grandfather's. He passed in the early 80's. Its about as full as when I got it. I use things from it to fix things, but I also add odd nuts in bolts to it. There have been many times when it saved me a trip to the store because it had just the right bolt or nut that I needed.

A Lot of businesses throw out plastic spools. I've got a local electrician who keeps them for me. Also scavenging for loot in the creek has supplied me with a variety of free stuff. Really like your videos 👍

Plastic peanut butter jars are an ideal replacement for glass jars, they're clear and less prone to breaking plus they come in different sizes
And plastic mayonnaise jars too! They're good for liquids, since they seal well at the top.

Living in the country, rodents are an ongoing issue. I store just about any food item that comes in a box in glass jars, in my daily use pantry. Half gallon and gallon glass jars work well for flour, sugar, dry noodles etc.
😊 our county recycling center is a really good place to pick up all kinds of materials. I've picked up a lot of books for the grandkids and for me

Just want to add a note that Chipotle has the most durable and flexible plastic silverware I've ever gotten from a fast food place. The bins are also usually completely unsupervised, so you can grab 3-4 of each whenever you go in for a burrito. My actual silverware drawer at home is half metal and half Chipotle plastic silverware.
You could even use the trashbags from the grocery store to collect rain water!
I get napkins and matches every time I go in to a gas station. If the have wrapped plastic silverware I grab them also
Be careful when storing cardboard, roaches love using them for nest.
Charcoal Chimney is a definite no-brainer. Reusable many, many, many times and no need to buy charcoal lighter fluid. I grab free papers at convenience stores to use with the chimney.

I like to grill over charcoal. A charcoal chimney gets the charcoal started without lighter fluid.

I have always saved unused items when eating out. I used to save the Honey packets from KFC 🍗 before I saw it ... ISN'T REAL HONEY! 😳 All these useful items do add up quickly. Thanks JR. 🇺🇸

McDonald's honey 🍯 🐝 pots for tea 🍵 is real honey. I make sure I always say REAL, or PURE honey, NOT honey mustard, for my 🐔🍗 nuggets. Then save in my cool bag whatever is left over.
I’ve always used plastic buckets/pots with a certain recycled number on the bottom for growing any plants that will be eaten.
We save for prepping kit, sometimes for months.
Those little plastic bowls or oval trays used to package microwaveable frozen meals can be washed (by hand or in the dishwasher) and saved for other uses. They are a good alternative to buying disposable paper plates or paper bowls if clean water is in short supply. They can also be useful if you want to feed soup or stew or rice and beans to some survivors of a disaster but do not want to risk that they will walk off with your good plates or bowls.
I have an old perculatercoffeepot have filter already made up to make a pot a whole lot quicker.

I took control of the twist-tie black market years ago!
We've also been keeping certain glass and plastic bottles to clean and repurpose. And who doesn't have coffee cans full of old screws and nails in the garage or basement? 😅
Keep a couple of twist ties in your toolbox for getting the gunk out of small engine carburator orifices (of course, strip the plastic off)

I loved your video on knot tying. I never knew about some of those knots. I remember a couple but really need to go back and watch it again. This was a really good video about free stuff too. I save many of these items and am glad to know that I am not the only one.

Something that people rarely mention is plant propagation. Herbs can be rooted easily in water. Figs and berries are easy to root. Saving seeds and regrowing things like garlic, onions, potatoes, lettuce is a good way to get free food.
