For chest freezers, placing 2 or 3 folded blankets on top of the freezer, covering the entire surface within a couple hours of the power going out can increase the time before things start to melt. We managed to keep the contents of our very full freezer frozen for 4.5 days without power during a September snowstorm in 2014. While it may not help with a major EMP, it can certainly help with shorter emergencies.
good idea i also have all my meat seasoned and cooked then vacuum seal in freezer this helps with fuel and time and water also it can be eaten cold i have a cooler with bags of ice balls to keep cold but never thought about blankets over it thanks
Put your food out in the snow after enough freezer cold has left. In buckets. Cover it with snow on top-like a Dutch oven effect, only with cold snow instead of coals.
Very good video. One more tip: I have written everything down that I need to think of when SHTF. And that is a lot! I wrote it down, not for myself, but for my future housemates (children, grandchildren). When I take them in, they have to be thorougly instructed and trained. Without documentation, you do not know where to start and you forget things. Moreover, it is too much to take in at once.
Your on track with training plans for newcomers. Essential. Groups and families may not like it but this should be done by all for the benifit of all. A little knowledge can make all the difference.
Yes! I have my 'To Grab' list ready to go. It has everything in order of importance, so I can take what I really need if I only have a few minutes, but also things to take if I have time. But, I know that I'll be nervous and not be able to focus normally, so that list is important to me.
Read the book "One Second After." It opens your mind up to a myriad of different "prepping" skill sets that you need to add to your prepping lifestyle. Vehicles made after 1980'ish will not operate. A major EMP event will take us back to the 1850's in a flash.
Eh, do research for yourself on the effects of an EMP. It takes a long antenna to accept an EMP. The electrical grid is for sure at risk, but smaller objects are not affected like that.
@@insideoutsideupsidedown2218 They fry instantly in nanoseconds (E1) You are speaking about E3 that will melt down power lines, copper telephone lines, etc. Gas protectors, fiber optics repeaters, transformers will "explode". Back to before the Midle Ages....
I had a certified plumber come out to our house yesterday to install a back flow valve in our sewage clean out pipe so that no sewage would enter our house if the situation got that bad. Since we live on a hill, he was honest and said that although he'd love to charge me $1,800.00 to install it, we really didn't need one. He said the houses at the bottom of the hill need one. He looked at our street and said the sewage will force the lid off the manhole cover and will flow downhill towards the houses down there. There really wasn't any way it would ever flow back into our house. I also asked him about the inflatable ball that can be inserted in the sewage clean out pipe and he said by the time you realize you need it, it will be too late and sewage will already be in your house. I absolutely loved this video and got so much useful information from it. THANK YOU!!!
@@LostBeagle If you live in a house with a big enough garden, you can always install a septic tank with a spreading field. Without a spreading field, you will have to empty your tank every other year…. And you are unlikely to find a company to do this unpleasant job in a SHTF situation.
I used to work as a contractor on an Air Force base. Some of my crew had to climb a water tower on the base to change out an antenna. There were rust holes in the tank and a dead pigeon floating in there. Don't trust your tap water.
I was in Cuba for a month and was staying in a house near Havana. One day our water ran out from the house. The hosts were..." Will call the water company to come fill your tank. We thought we had city water. Nope...the tank was hosting frogs.
Good stuff. We talked about not using any spices when we’re cooking, but add them at the end to our food after being plated because when cooking inside with spices, you can smell it outside for a long way.
Thanks for the tip! I never thought about that before. I love cooking with garlic and other spices and the smell does go a long way through the neighbourhood. Especially if no one else has prepped before hand and isn't cooking.
this assumes your neighbours are awful. first thing to do is make sure the whole street is a team, cordone off the roads is a good idea too. funny how he doesn't seem to mention that working together could be a good idea.
Agree! I bought both tennis and racquet balls (put inside a long sock) to stuff in the drains. I'm imagining the need to put heavy things on top of the sock/balls.
In the PLUMBING DEPT, you can purchase a SEWER TRAP that you put into your line going from your house to the Sewage Line.. All of us put them on when Sewage came to our area, as it is a means to keep anything from BACKUP into the homes...
Another great video with important information. Thank JR. I do have an EMP question. With all of the arcing associated with EMPs, is there a good chance that we could see a lot of house fires?
It’s possible, but would probably depend on several factors. A worst case scenario would be a house right under the EMP with bad wiring inside the house and poorly maintained utility equipment outside. If it’s dry outside, that wouldn’t help either of sparks start dropping from lines or transformers onto dead grass.
It's not hard, you stock up on canned meats, veggies, and pastas, butane or propane stove, lard to make candles, rice, oats, and pet food if having pets, also prepare some of those food preps in a large suitcase in case you must evacuate,n stock up on water bottles for drinking,n fill up tap water for cleaning n hygiene, baby wipes, etc, things that won't spoil ,if you can have a generator that's great,I'm a appt dweller, you can prep ,please do,also fruits , anything you can cook without depending on the grid, that's your survival
@@mikesmith6461 I have never understood why people prep with rope and paracord- is that a military thing? Would it be used to pull a truck out of a ditch or something? I can see a bungee cord and tarp, for say a broken window, but I honestly don't know what a rope or paracord could be useful for. Please explain, thank you!
Okra---- a favorite vegetable difficult to find (even frozen) in my area. It was heartwarming to see it there in amongst the chilis. With a spread like that, what could be better after SHTF than a steaming bowl of gumbo? You can forage for the file. And maybe some crawfish and fresh water mussels. Venison sausage? You're good to go!
Greetings from Tennessee. I hope you and your family made it through the fires okay. I'm still think you need to do a show on the difference between a bug out bag and a get home bag, which in my opinion are two very different things.
We are currently still without power and Upstate, South Carolina. They don’t expect power back in my area until Friday at the minimum. With that being said there isn’t too many rich people in my area out of about 50 houses only to have generators and you could hear them running at night and they are the only houses that have lights on. Now I’m not gonna rob nobody and I’m not on drugs and I have all that I need for me and my children. But a lot of the people in my area will steal your gas can just because and I’ve caught many of them doing that just to me even when the lights were on during normal occasions. theft has skyrocketed in the past few days and I’m surprised them rich. Haven’t lost their generators yet.
If your children are at school, their first plan , in an emergency is to put the children on school busses and take them to a central location for parents to pick them up. With no bus transport available, I suspect that they will hold the children at the school until someone picks them up. A friend of mine has told his daughter to "escape" and make her way to a pre chosen safe waypoint.
When my son was in local schools, the meeting place was the large Oak tree on our dental clinic property. It's at the center of town and easy to walk to.
Teach your kids in this event to dump their backpacks, fill the water bottles if they can and which route they're to walk home. Our tweens are not going to sit in a school gym somewhere.
It seems to me that the best thing to do post EMP is to organize local neighborhoods and help each other survive. Living in a post electronic world will seem tough, but doable if we stay calm and work together, pooling our resources and abilities. Neighborhood associations will have a whole new meaning.
That may be easier said than done, a lot of people will be in a mad panic & they will get dangerous. Some neighbourhoods might be more in control, but others will be a living nightmare with gangs doing home invasions & looting. Regardless, it's scary stuff.
No worries for me. I know where I’m going when I die and how I get there is not really an issue. God knows what’s going to happen and I place my trust in him. God has given me common sense and I have prepared as much as I can. John 3:16
Read "one second after". A story of a veteran in black mountain NC when a EMP hits the nation...and his daughter needs refrigerated insulin. Its a 3 parter, youll be hooked
Use a 5 gallon bucket, a toilet seat and plastic bags set inside of the 5 gallon bucket, put kitty litter or pine litter or even corn cob bits into that toilet and use it as your toilet adding a little litter after each use, can put tied bag into trash can or compost it somehow.
Better yet, put the plastic bag in your toilet. Dip the water out first and plug the drain so that sewer gas doesn’t come into the house. Sitting on a five gallon bucket may cause it to tip over. Your toilet is the better option.
Just for urination.. You can use urinals like the hospitals do when you can't get out of bed. Then dispose of in yard, maybe on weeds! For the other hmm I think the plastic bags in the toilet where the water has been removed sounds more sturdier to me just my thought. But all ideas really good depending on your situation.
It should be said (I missed it if it was) no one really knows what an EMP will do to everything, of course the grid or parts of it will likely go down, but there is no telling what it will do to modern cell phones, cars, generators and other medium to small electronics like fridges. For all we know they will be completely unharmed, or everything with the simplest circuit board could be fried, we just don't know for sure. But these are some good steps regardless.
I bought EMP Shields for my car and the breaker box of my house. Anything plugged in to an outlet is protected. The shields are military grade and have been tested for just about any EMP pulse short of a micro nova
Dang! Gotta unseal my Faraday can and add solar motion sensor lights and alarms. I had the packs of solar lights in there but never thought of motion sensor ones. Thank you! It pays to watch yet another prepper video as you never know when you might have missed something.
After a grid-down, to see who might be on my porch at night, I have a motion-sensor solar-powered porch light...not to be installed until needed, so the battery is reserved.

JR you are by far my favorite prepper to watch. Honest, no fear mongering, direct, don't beat around the bush to prolong something that can be said in a couple of minutes vs 30 minutes. Can't wait to read the Stockpile List you sent me. Have a great week.
Put proper thermometers into fridges and freezers up front where if needed you can quickly tell the temps of them also keeping a fridge or freezer full helps it stay cold much longer than this that have allot of empty room in them, freeze or store water bottles with expansion room helps keep the appliances cold as well as using less energy to keep them at a proper temp even during normal times.
I have two old generators that will not be affected by an EMP and enough fuel for a few weeks for two or three hours of running a day. We live outside of a small town with a well in the garden, and enough food for three or four months.
Be sure to use a fuel stabilizer or just use it up as long as you can get moreyoull need more tgan 10 gals living off a generator won't be sustainable as you won't bevable to get gas
Wow J.R. I think that was your most helpful video yet, thank you! I am going to watch it again to make sure I absorbed everything. Also completely irrelevant to the video, I know, but that is a great shirt- good color for you. 😂
For a thermos, boil 10 min, pour into thermos. Wrap in towels or blankets. May set in bathtub for the day. Dinner cooks while you are busy. Scent is sealed in during cooking. Open and consume.
Get a stout cardboard box. Have a few small pillows (strong material) filled with foam chips. Bring one pot for the family to a boil by whatever means with you foodstuff inside the pot. Put the lid on the pot, pot inside the cardboard box with the pillows below, around and on top of the pot. Place close fitting cardboard lid on the box. End result is a complete cooked meal.
I have jugs I filled with water and have kept in my basement. It’s not to drink, it’s so we can use to flush our toilet or to clean dishes. As far as drinking water, I bought water and I have the drinking straws.
for small game and birds dont underestimate the 22 air gun. make sure its not co2 powered. 1000s of .22 pellets can be had relatively cheap and they are pretty silent. .22 pellets can take down squirls, birds and other animals under about 5 pounds.
I see adult potty chairs at almost every estate sale and at thrift stores. There is no reason to have to rig something up when you can get one for about $20.
Was at a Walmart a senior was trying to paid with a 50 dollar bill. Walmart manager refused to accept it because it was worn. I walked over asked to see the bill. I then after taking a good look pull a 10 and two 20’s out and gave them to the man. The manager (a young pup). Said the bill was too old. I looked at him and replied “you need a reality check”. Walked out. Went to my bank and exchange it for a new 50 dollar bill
I grew up poor and I think I can survive and am prepping as much as I can but finances force me to pick and choose. Thankfully I live in an area with a lot of natural resources available and we were farmers. I can plow a field grow a garden etc. And I’ve purchased seeds. I’ve been discussing things with my neighbors I trust about working together.
Thank you young man. It is certainly a pleasure to listen to your instructions. I can tell that you want to help folks by teaching them how to help themselves and you do it without an altered ego. 🙏🙏🙏
If you are stuck in a city or suburb, depending on the situation that caused the EMP, follow the 12/24 rule. Take 12 hours to gather up necessary resources and be gone from that area by the 24 hour mark. The first 12 hours will be your best chance to get around and stock up on supplies as most people will be scratching thier heads trying to "figure out" what's happened. Around hour 12 is when some will start to get wise and start to the situation, but will remain hopeful that the power is still going to be restored. Things will start to degrade and by the 24 hour mark people will go into full panic mode. The second the grid goes down, law and order will be a thing of the past, but it will take a little while for the average Joe to figure that out.. it's best to be as far away from a populated area as you can before they do.
12/24 is a good rule, but there won't be any way to travel anywhere except by bicycle or on foot... unless you're one of the very rare people who own an operational pre-80's vehicle that happens to have a full gas tank.
I’ve been rewatching the EMP/Nuke Prank people did a while ago and you really get to see how so many people don’t take action and remain confused or skeptical
That's how it is. And they knew me. I was not 'expected' so I was 'sent back.' But they knew me. They. Knew. Me. You just cannot comprehend the comfort I take from that. I enjoy this side of life, but I am not afraid of leaving it.
Excellent question/ concern. I'm always asking "prepper channels" to address this and other issues like if the grid goes down and you can't work what would happen if you can't pay rent? Nobody's talking about this major issue!
@@Ben-qm9zq Your landlord/apt. manager is not going to be chasing you down for rent in this scenario. Focus on basic survival (food, water, sanitation & security). Worry about paying your rent when the lights come back on.
The problem with your tub is that most of them do not have reliable drain plugs. They are hard to get to and maintain so over time these leak significantly. They are OK for baths but not for any storage over any amount of time in this situation.
Thank you for a well researched and highly practical video. Bravo. We all pray it won't come to the this, but with each passing day it does appear more and more predictable.
I have some of the nuns hats that we use in hospitals to collect patient urine and bm. It fits underneath the seat. I can then dump the waste into a bucket and take outside. I also have a portable bedside commode that forlds flat for storage.
As far as clean drinking water, everyone needs to spend the money to get a large microfilter/purifier and a spare filter. They can clean tens of thousands of gallons of water. Clean water will be more important than food if TSHTF.
There was a young man out of MO who did earthquakes.. Dutchsinse. I followed him for a long time till something changed with his channel. He said one of the best places to go was a Campground. I liked his idea. In the Ozarks there are many good campgrounds. I still think you need to have a plan to flee. Need to check places before something happens. Get your camping gear ready.
For long-term food security, pressure canning. You can preserve non-acid foods like meat and vegetables for a year or two. You can preserve fully finished meals like chili, curries, and soups. For bugging out, you can save money by storing meal replacement powders/bars instead of investing in MREs or other emergency rations which can be costly. We use a vegan protein powder as it has more nutrients than regular protein powders, and more protein than regular meal replacement powders.
Things I have wondered about: 1. Does your car stop working in an emp? 2. Will faraday walls in your garage help? 3. What happens to the solar electric set up on your house/roof after an emp?
Biggest immediate question is how would you know if you were experiencing a regular power outage or an EMP farther away than what would immediately effect your personal items but does shut down the country? If all coms go down you wouldn't know if it's a service problem or ww3
Very good question. I live in an apartment complex several miles from a family member that lives in a house. I am not sure when I would need to take my dog and make my way to their house and abandon my place and prep stuff.
A sealed military ammo boxes of various sizes can protect handheld GPS its, cell phones, iPads, laptops, emergency radios, etc. EMP "blankets" can protect e-bikes. PROPERLY sealed metal garbage cans (sealed with aluminum tape on seams and lid closure) is good for "solar" batteries, etc.
Great video and for an EMP, I agree. I think cyber attack on the grid is more likely because it can be held hostage or, in the worse case, it can be restored easily after a successful invasion. I think THIS and solar stuff (see David voght and solar observers) is the most imminent threat….
The residual effect is the possibility of multiple housefires. Some engineers are concerned that the wiring in our walls will glow like a toaster oven. Therefore it is important to have adequate. Fire extinguishers.
You can have a backflow preventer valve installed or as a last resort, you can pour a bag of concrete mix into your clean out. Fixing that later would certainly be preferable to having your home floodedwith sewage.

Keep frozen water jugs in your freezer.
It will help keep it cold longer too

Put your food out in the snow after enough freezer cold has left. In buckets. Cover it with snow on top-like a Dutch oven effect, only with cold snow instead of coals.
Very good video. One more tip: I have written everything down that I need to think of when SHTF. And that is a lot! I wrote it down, not for myself, but for my future housemates (children, grandchildren). When I take them in, they have to be thorougly instructed and trained. Without documentation, you do not know where to start and you forget things. Moreover, it is too much to take in at once.
Excellent idea Peter- also for ourselves because if we are panicking or stressed, we may not be thinking clearly! 👍

Read the book "One Second After." It opens your mind up to a myriad of different "prepping" skill sets that you need to add to your prepping lifestyle. Vehicles made after 1980'ish will not operate. A major EMP event will take us back to the 1850's in a flash.
Loved those books. Very informative. I think i read the writer spoke before congress many years ago about protecting our infrastructure
Eh, do research for yourself on the effects of an EMP. It takes a long antenna to accept an EMP. The electrical grid is for sure at risk, but smaller objects are not affected like that.

Keep that plumber : he’s a honest man !
Regardless; what will you do when the public sewage system is down? Got a hookup to a septic tank?
@@LostBeagle If you live in a house with a big enough garden, you can always install a septic tank with a spreading field. Without a spreading field, you will have to empty your tank every other year…. And you are unlikely to find a company to do this unpleasant job in a SHTF situation.

No they would put the schools in lock down.
Busses won’t work
When my son was in local schools, the meeting place was the large Oak tree on our dental clinic property. It's at the center of town and easy to walk to.
Teach your kids in this event to dump their backpacks, fill the water bottles if they can and which route they're to walk home. Our tweens are not going to sit in a school gym somewhere.
Why escape?why not just meet them at the school and not cause the teachers to have a heart attack with a missing kid during all that chaos
That won't likely work. Greed n desperation

FUK NO
A trash can that will be emptied by whom? And 'somehow' is not approved method of problem solving.
The pine litter works great as it is relatively lightweight and does a great job of absorbing liquids.

It takes a long antenna to accept an EMP. Electrical lines will be at risk, but small items will not be affected. They will not be "burned out" .

I love this 12/24 theory!

Not very likely and not at all if there's no wire cables connected to them.

1) Yes, if it’s a mid-80’s model or newer. 2) Probably, if done right. Floor needs to be shielded too. 3) Solar panel diodes will be fried.
Google it it’ll have a lot of answers
Biggest immediate question is how would you know if you were experiencing a regular power outage or an EMP farther away than what would immediately effect your personal items but does shut down the country? If all coms go down you wouldn't know if it's a service problem or ww3
Very good question. I live in an apartment complex several miles from a family member that lives in a house. I am not sure when I would need to take my dog and make my way to their house and abandon my place and prep stuff.
If it's an EMP, the power bounces from above AND below. It's a double whammy.
Thank you
Great video and for an EMP, I agree. I think cyber attack on the grid is more likely because it can be held hostage or, in the worse case, it can be restored easily after a successful invasion.
I think THIS and solar stuff (see David voght and solar observers) is the most imminent threat….
Doug Voght of Diehold foundation....
Ben Davidson of suspicious observers.
The warning of multiple emp attacks is valid and not something I considered. Great incite!
It’s insight not incite .
After an emp would a compass be effected? Are there residual effects?
The residual effect is the possibility of multiple housefires. Some engineers are concerned that the wiring in our walls will glow like a toaster oven. Therefore it is important to have adequate. Fire extinguishers.
You can also source water from you hot water tank.
Water bed also.
So, how do you block the main drain line?
You can have a backflow preventer valve installed or as a last resort, you can pour a bag of concrete mix into your clean out. Fixing that later would certainly be preferable to having your home floodedwith sewage.
I’m impressed JR. Had no idea you had a channel. Good information! Take care and continued success!
Thank you Pastor Chad!
