Generally speaking, the variencs or gap descripencies are most likely from using eva foam decking vs the original carpet. The lids are made with a gap to accommodate the thickness of the carpet when it's wrapped over the edges. Depending on the quality or pound rating if the Marine carpet, each edge of carpet adds 1/8-1/4 of thickness to each side. Multiply that times 4 edges and the gap is gone. Nice job with the decking foam. You could always reinforce those edges with angled aluminum and framing it out.

Here's an idea for anyone attempting this, create a line down the center. When I'm working on my 14 foot V bow I ran a string from front center to rear center and made pencil marks along the line. Unless the boat is more than 80 inches you have enough to span the entire width. Before starting to cut the material measure the edges so you use the odd size on the outside, if not cutting it off? I watched a video where a guy used blue painters tape (no cardboard) to create the template. He was able to peel it off the kayak and apply it to the sea deck. I understand a boat template is much larger than a kayak. Great video.

This idea meshes with some of the other videos. Find a centerline and work out from there. Decide if you want the actual center to be an accent gap, a full slat, or a slot.
Most applications are making an accent gap instead of trying to do a seamless look. With the accent gaps, the pieces for one side will be mirrors of the other side. Measure, plan, make templates, measure, adjust templates, measure, THEN CUT.

    Looking good dude, RELAX.
Your girl did a bang up job on that adhesive removal, I know how much of a pain in the ass that is and the soar fingers it leaves you with. Don't sweat the small stuff man, this is a budget build and your getting great results. People watching this series are not expecting you to build a brand new boat on a budget, most of us just enjoy this type of content and or can throw ideas out there that might help. Keep up the good work! 👍

Where the front deck plates covered in carpet? The carpet added width to the panel and helped hold them in place. You can add the Eva foam around the edges to tighten the gaps and have them be more secure

Just a thought, get some 2 x 2 1/8 angle aluminum, fairly inexpensive and bolt them under those deck extensions for support.

  • @keegansmith9622
    @keegansmith9622 2 роки тому +5

The deck extension pieces were designed to have carpet for proper spacing so with the foam you don't have that buffer you get with carpet so you will either have to redesign the lids and add supports or remove them completely for it to look right.

Best thing about your videos is they’re REAL life and not some video that’s mostly fake. We started watching this journey and you’ve had to relocate to another state. We’ve watched as you’ve plugged along with life and then working on the videos on the boat build at the same time. Just keeping us up to date on the progress of the boat build and your trials and errors is what makes these videos great. You’re passion and sincerity for what you’re doing with the build is infectious so keep up the good work. Think when I have to replace the carpet in my boat I’ll look into that foam. Keep up the good work brother and can’t wait until the next video is uploaded. No way that I could talk my wife into doing some work like that to my boat., especially by herself, “and film it too”....😂

I have used this for several builds. There are pros and cons to it. Soft on the feet. Looks great, washes easy. Cons; seams separate, if left in sun too long it will lift, sometimes lines don't match up. I'd consider using a full piece instead of sections. Will eliminate all the issues I mentioned.

This stuff can really dress up a boat, but on our sailboat I've noticed a few things after 1 year. First, it oxidizes like crazy in the sun, and if you use it for seats etc (which we did to replace the original teak), it will leave large dusty patches on clothes and bags. We have one of the wood colors, so it releases a brownish/ashy dust when you touch it. The adhesive it comes with is terrible (lifts easily, even after full cure). We got fed up using different adhesives, and finally used a Corning poly to adhere it (which I'm sure we'll regret later). It's soft and comfortable underfoot, but easily tears.
Overall, a great option to quickly improve an area, and best suited for boats stored indoors

What are the deck drop ins made of? Depending on clearances, you can try mounting/hinging them to aluminum angle making it all 1 piece to drop in. So it doesn't wear on the glass I would also attach some sort of material between the mounting surfaces. You could then use those straps and a quick disconnect, like those found on back packs, and screw/bolt one side into drivers side console which would allow then to still be removed. This was just a quick thought. It took few different design ideas/sketches before I found what worked best on my skeeter!

For a deck extension hold down solution. How about a u shaped wall/ceiling fastener with two screw eyelets attached to the deck and the deck extension- 8 total. Then a self adjusting bungee or a bungee with eye snaps attachment? The hardware can be found in stainless and plastic - PERKO - probably has what you need. This is the system currently in place on my Parker with a bow filler and it handles rough water flawlessly. When the bungee gets a little weak I just cinch it down a bit.

The deck insert on that boat had snaps screwed into the cap that those straps snapped to, as for the side part it was hinged to the center part. And the gap’s are there to allow for them to be carpeted. Bass cat uses high quality thick carpet so that should answer your deck extension questions.

Exactly right. I have a '94 PII and this factory deck extension. It snaps in near the floor to hold it in place and make it easily removable. The side section hinges to it. Works great. Mine also has a section that is vertical to close off that section next to the console that adds to the rigidity and keeps everything inside that you put in it.

I just went through a similar project on my homebuilt small skiff, using a one color grey EVA foam. This was also from Amazon. I wasn't removing a carpet first , as this deck had a molded anti slip pattern. That required the band grinding work to remove, - right down to the glass laminate. Next of, I used an oil based primer/gelcoat like you did. Not as tough as the original gelcoat, but it seals and it looks fine. Its easy to repair scratches as well. The thing with foam is, that it has a substantial heat expansion in the sun. This is the reason I learned, trying to make seams invisible is a waste of time. Make some purposely separated smaller areas instead. That's much better. That might even help to drain the deck better! Even if the separation width vary a little, it doesn't look bad. If you are worried about the dampening of noise, I don't think that a 1/4 - 1/2 inch stripe of bare deck between the foam areas makes any difference. Unless you are using spiked wadingboots maybe ;-)
Yes, the variance in the EVA foam color is visible. I also learned that from buying roll no. 2. Again using separated areas will help make this issue less visible.
I'm looking forward to the learn the long term cost/benefits of this material. It is possible to wash and clean with soap and a hard brush. At least that's better than a permanently glued carpet. I have another boat, were the deck carpet is fastened with Velcro. It works, but I don't use that boat so often for other reasons.

Best paint to use on gelcoated/fiberglass- Ace Hardware porch and concrete floor paint. It's a polyethelene alchiad. Which are the ingredients for anti-fouling paint. I once did an entire 16' Quachita in grey using a roller and sponge brushes. It is self leveling and cost about 10 bucks/quart and when you are done, it looks just like gelcoat . I recently tried the Amazon style EVA to do the floor in my 21' Ranger. Don't ever use light grey. It's almost white and if you get in the boat it will suck the floor dirt and dust off your shoes and turn everything brown. It is hell to clean. I use straight 409 spray and wipe out a 12" section at a time. I'd stay with the color you have. Also, don't be surprised if it shrinks a little allowing your cut seams to later show out a little. I had perfect seams on the floor walkway when I laid the stuff. A few months later and now there's an ugly seam.

Bass Cat made an extension for the Pantera II model which they called a "flippin' deck". It consisted of 3 panels that were all attached to each other so they wouldn't move and would be stable to stand on. There was a vertical panel to support the rear edge of the center panel (glassed together), then there was the center and starboard flat panels that looked similar to what you have but they were permanently connected to each other with a piano hinge. Each flippin'deck was designed specifically to fit a particular model and when they were in place they were snug, stable, and secure. What you have there wasn't from Bass Cat or may have been something the owner bought that was designed for a different model. Obviously even the correct flippin' deck was designed to be snug with carpeting so I imagine it would rattle a bit without carpet. I'm curious if you're going to experience a lot of rattling with no carpet along the lip of the lids where they sit on the deck. Here you can see how the flippin' deck extension is supposed to look on your model:

Maybe some automotive rubber seal material for around those deck extension lids. They sell rolls of it that are inch or so wide, inch or so thick. The type around the inside of trunk lids. That would help keep them centered, stop some water from passing down, but wouldn't keep them on the deck in rough water at speed. You certainly don't want them flying past your head running 50+ on rough water.

All that molded fiberglass is very irregular. That was another wrench I had to deal with. I assume this stuff all comes from China doesn't it? I wonder if an Alibaba inquiry could get foam that is much wider. I think most people would rather have it wider than longer. As long as the lines are even then they could just match them up. I'm not done with the video but just an FYI, the phone I got had something buried inside the instruction manual. It said that if the color is incorrect from piece to piece, to turn One of them around the other way. I think it's kind of like carpet where when you rub it in one direction it will look different from when you rub it in a different direction.

If you take two separate pieces of the foam and turn them in opposite directions in the sunlight you will notice one piece is darker than the other. And if I were to do the EVA foam route again, I would buy solid colors, having to make special cuts to line up the lines is a time killer and a pain in the arse.

I was able to fill in some spots to make the transitions smoother, but my biggest issue was finding a good glue. The EVA foam does come with sticky backing on it which would probably work well with a flat/smooth surface, of which I did not have. The glue I used did a pretty good job, but corners and such started coming up.

I was thinking using spray carpet glue and spraying it on. Id use a full sheet flat over prepared plywood. Then cut off the extra. My boat will be covered or in my garage when not in use...or just use carpet?

@@charlesparmenter5515 I used Locktight power grab heavy duty construction adhesive. The EVA foam I used had pre-made lines/grooves on it and had to do special cuts for the lids EVA foam in order for the lines to match up from piece to piece. If I ever decided to try it again I would use EVA foam with no pre-made grooves in it. Also, sunlight reflects differently off of the EVA foam, meaning if you take 2 pieces of EVA foam and place one piece upside down, one will look darker than the other. So make sure all pieces are going the same direction.

@David P ill get one solid color forsure and find a good adhesive. I think its worth a shot vs carpet. 🤔 a small front deck with a couple hatches. Then a flat floor in bottom and then a bench seat. Any idea the thickness of the eva. Or should i do another brand

When that bost was new front decks were very limited and there was a lot of wasted space in the cockpit floor. Deck extensions solved this. Having ones that mostly fit wins most of the battle brace them if needed, bolt or screw them down snd enjoy the room

It’s because they have room for carpet since you removed the carpet you’d probably want to add some kind of weather stripping or something like that tho fill the gaps and keep water out

  • @northcarolinabassin7643

Those deck extensions have that gap because the boat was carpeted. With carpet wrapped around those lids there would not be much if any gap. If they cut them closer then you wouldn’t be able to open and close then with carpet. That’s why intercostal bass boats have different lids than traditional bass boats because seadeck does not fill in those gaps.

Another fine episode. Nice work. I looked at the same material, but chose to go carpet due to that cost. But that is a great tutorial on how that stuff really is. It is lookin great. Maybe in the next episode you can show how you wrapped it around the edges we would love to see that. That was one of the main reasons I didn't go with it. and the space between hatches and deck would have made it too tight to open the hatches

Dang! Bro, just dang! Why not use mylar template? Why not use boarder cutter and circle/angle cutter designed for cutting eva foam? Good job getting the glue off, number one importance when laying over aluminum or fiberglass. Also, just a suggestion for others, try doing a snap in version of this foam. I did one for a buddy that we sandwiched two layers of foam against each other's backing adhesive. I used thin plastic in between the layers in areas for snaps to have something to hold to. Was too high. Using shelving liner matting works better and is thinner. Use the biggest, flattest snaps you can find. Works great. Don't buy the name brand unless you are in that tax bracket!
