Hey Beth, just to clear up the few confused looks you had. 'Canvas Bags' is a song by another Australian comedian and song writer call Tim Minchin (who you should definitely check out). Tim actually performed the song earlier in the same show and they quickly added it to the rotation of songs in their performance. And 'Bird Plane' is one of their own songs.
See, they did write a four chord song :D
Canvas Bag is unironically a banger. Often I don't laugh as much while watching Tim Minchin as his comedy deserves because I'm so blown away by his talent.
It would be great if Beth reacted to Tim Minchin. I think "Dark Side" ua-cam.com/video/3xQmJ_vxHB4/v-deo.html would be a good one.
@@waynec3563 or White Wine in the Sun which is perhaps the best xmas song of the decade
And, of course, "Bird Plane" is really just a play off of Five for Fighting's "Superman".
I love it that they literally call it the “Axis progression” now
This was shot at a comedy festival. The guy just before them did the song about the canvas bags. It fit the 4 chord mold, so they quickly wrote it in.
This illustrates the true genius behind them and this song. Every time they performed it live, they changed the songs in the medley so it was never the exact same songs within the medley. Also, they did that to reflect whatever the modern hits were at the time since they were together for quite some time before they broke up.
And that guy was Tim Minchin. Another excellent comedic musician.
lol nice story but na, canvas bags was in it WAY before this performance (although mostly a shorter exert from it)
It is because of this that I can't *not* sing "Come on Barbie, let's go party" in the "Poker Face" chorus - guess which song I heard first!
It's sad that this group is no longer together....they really had something brilliant! ❤️
I wish more would react to their how to write a love song. It was great as well
Wow, that was a blast from the past. XD
That video has been in my favorites for over ten years now.
Over forty years.
Naturally, this is their biggest hit.
Ha ha, great reaction!!
I’ve seen them do 3 different versions of this! (Years ago now - they’ve sadly split up!) every version has had different ‘4 chord’ songs in it!!!! My mind was blown the first time!!!
The ‘official’ version of this track with the music video is great! They dress up or use props from each song - hilarious seeing them dressed as the Spice Girls!!!
They also have another fun track ‘how to write a love song’ or something like that - it’s exactly as it sounds!!!
Hey Beth! You should listen to Tim Minchin, an australian singer/comedian. His musics are great, I would love to see you react one of his songs.
Seconded, for sure. Either one of his comedic pieces, or even something more heartfelt, like White Wine in the Sun.
@@malkiyyah2693 I was coming here suggest the same! The sad or the fun ones would be amazing in a react!
Dark side would be perfect
You thought of him because they did canvas bags as part of 4 chord songs. 🙂 I second that.
I would recommend the song "Prejudice" for obvious reasons.
This song always has a special place in my heart as an Aussie. It's great to see your reaction as a vocal coach as well. Glad to see you enjoyed it 😊
Her wonderful reaction is exactly the same as mine the first time I watched this, just smiles. Same with everyone else I've seen. Such a joy
I love AoA. They’ve unfortunately split up and all doing their own thing now. Jordan actually transitioned a few years ago. They have a load of amazing songs. Give “How To Write A Love Song” a go
transitioned to doing what?
That'd exactly what I was gonna suggest
@@everychannel1025 Male to female transition
Yep, Jordan is a lovely person, she has her own twitch channel and is on stream quite frequently.
@@petervenkman69 What a fruit cake.
It's brilliant to see people smile through music. And beth has an awesome authentic smile. No faking that.
I remember seeing this either just before or after covid and passed it onto my boss who plays piano. he got a great kick out of it.
I love that you loved it. It's one of my favorite performances evet.
God, you are the first reaction video of this skit who has a musical/teaching background who also gets the brilliance of the COMEDY also fitting in there in between the musical beats. Love it!!!
Axis of Awesome are awesome! Love their presence, comedic art, and timing. 🎭💜
I've seen their routine before. Thank you for covering it. They kick butt.
Yeah, I always laugh a ton when I watch these guys. It was great to see you laugh at this.
I really love their harmony.
I guess I was meant to see this, I'd just got done watching this and then scrolled the page and here you are.
I absolutely adored your reaction.
You can go down an amazing rabbit hole with the Axis of Awesome. Some of my favourites are "How to Write a Love Song," "Skeleton Man," "The Glorious Epic of Three Men Who Are Awesome," and "Moderately Rock and Roll," Benny Davis (the super talented little guy) has some great solo stuff too. His best are "Lonely Girl," and "Stay at Home Dad"
Do you hear the f*ing music coming out of my car :D
Of Benny's solo stuff I think Mid-2000's Tropical House Summer Jam is among his best too. The music vid is genius, essentially a hilariously creepy short horror film ua-cam.com/video/yQ3_TdyRAaI/v-deo.html&ab
I've seen a a few times before, but seeing Beth's reaction made it fresh.
Beth's happy smile is the same facial expression I have everytime I watch any version of "The 4 Chord Song" (there are a few). You just can't help being swept off your feet by such clever and (for lack of a better word) HAPPY comedy.
A brilliant act and medley. :)
The music video version of this is absolutely hysterical too. The costume changes are a thing of beauty.
Haha, your face when they added in one of their own songs : Birdplane. The audience reactions also make more sense when you realize this was in Australia (Waltzing Matilda) and Tim Minchin (Canvas Bags) had performed just before them.
And 'Birdplane' is their own song, which was not a hit in itself but ripped off Five for Fighting's 'Superman'
i love this group
So good to see you laughing so naturally at their antics. Looks like you had a good time like so many of us
Such a classic!
You should listen to their song The Elephant In The Room. A comic song about something very serious
Your laugh has the same impact on my soul, like watching kittens playing❤ these are the tininess worth living
I loved this did subscribe and turned on notifications. Hi from Lutz Florida USA
The way each verse of each song melds into the next thus composing a brand new poem, albeit a satirized one, is brilliant.
Thank you so much this was very very fun.
I love your laugh that make me smile
I really felt that Beth wanted to start singing along a few times.
Loved this, 😍 😍 😍
I’ve seen this before. Brilliant.
Haven't watched this in a long time. She's pretty talented. Maybe one day they'll perform together again.
So these guys are Australian and there is a big history of musical comedy in Australian. Check out The Doug Anthony All Stars Tim Minchin Tripod to name a few.
Great! From Brazil.
I'm really not surprised Benny had to push that note on take on me, they're playing a 5th up 😅
Yess! I just recently found this video. So true though!
To be fair most hit songs (especially American pop songs) for the last 40 years have been written by or in conjunction with the same two guys.
Oh I love this, first heard it some years ago. so clever and so funny. Love your reactions. Do you know the Canvas Bags song? by Tim Monchin. It's fun too.
I gotta wonder how many of those songs people from outside Australia would know. I never paid attention before but they put a lot of Aussie songs in there.
The song near the start you thought might be one of theirs is one of those Aussie songs. That was Amazing by Alex Lloyd. I think maybe the crowd cheered because it was the first Aussie song in there and if I remember correctly, this was recorded in Melbourne. They did have one of their own songs in there, in hindsight you might see it, cos it doesn't make much sense out of context. their song was Bird-Plane, Near the end.
Speaking as someone decidedly not Australian. Most of them. Waltzing Matilda I knew by name but I didn't know that was what they were singing until I looked it up. Other than that I think most of these are pretty well known internationally. At least in "the west" as they say. ;)
@@rhel373 which country? I think there is probably a huge difference in how well many of these songs are known in the UK & US
@@mehere8038 Germany here. :) A lot of these songs are/were decently big here. Not all of them for sure. But a lot of them.
@@rhel373 That's interesting. I never realised ANY Aussie songs had had any success in Germany until recently. There was a really classic Aussie song that I didn't think anyone outside Australia had had any interest in that someone was telling me was basically played on repeat late night at pubs there too, can't remember which one now unfortunately, has been a few other conversations I've had recently where I've learnt Aussie music is/can be popular in Germany, which is super cool to me :)
The US is a different beast though, I mean even Kylie Minogue is barely known there & there's some Aussie performers who hit it off there more than Europe, in general though I think Australian music shares much more with Europe than the US. I have no idea where Canada fits into the picture.
The fact that we compete in Eurovision I think says a lot about the similarities (and I still really don't get how we compete in that tbh lol) The fact Eurovision exists kinda says a lot about European music having universal European appeal too, while "world idol", as initiated by "American Idol" was a bit of a flop really & despite it's lofty ambitions to be another Eurovision, it only ever had a single episode, cause the Seppos are different to the rest of us :)
I mean I'm not sure, but watching them react to this, it does seem like most of them have no clue about most of the songs, exception being one I saw where the guy reacted to the music video, where it's got a much more international mix, that's the only reaction I've seen where a Seppo seems to be "getting it" with the 4 chord song. I could be wrong, but that's just how it appears to me

Please do a review of the voice of Ana Gabriel, that girl is part of those classic mexican and latinamerica idols of the gold times, has a very special, powerful and interesting voice, I would like to know your thoughts, I suggest you the song "Luna" as a curious thing is actually that song was written by Juan Gabriel, here is a link for that song, I'm sure you will enjoy it ua-cam.com/video/mte2kL4IpuM/v-deo.html

Please react to "Tim Minchin Canvas Bags", these guys used this song in their act. It's a good song / vid by stand up comedian, and he has good vocals in song, also a very funny comedian :)
As others have pointed out Take your Canvas bags is a nod to fellow Aussie comedian Tim Minchin. Prejudice, thank you God and white wine in the sun are great places to start with his extensive catalogue.
Birdplane is one of their own songs, hence why it lead into "doesn't it sound familiar?" A lyric from Missy Higgins' Scar.
Axis of Awesome are Australian and this gig was at the Melbourne Comedy festival Gala, so the song is filled with lots of Australian songs not heard as much overseas.
My mind was blown the 1st time I heard this song.
Bird Plane is one of their own songs
6:05 -- That reaction is justified, to them plugging one of their own songs hahaha
If you enjoyed that, watch their music video for "How to Write a Love Song" which is another one that is very funny but also showing a lot of musical knowhow. Thanks!
Prejudice by Tim Minchin Yes!!!!! I would love to see your reaction!!!
Great reaction. The lead singer, Jordan, actually came out a few years ago as trans. She's doing roller derby now, pretty cool
Ooh, hey, hi, while you’re exploring Australian comedic musician trios, might I interest you in some Doug Anthony Allstars? Their renditions of ‘Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood’ and ‘Throw Your Arms Around Me’ are superb and interesting to study from a vocal perspective, as well as their originals like ‘Warsong’ or ‘Sailors Arms’!
Agreed. The Dougs were just fantastic at harmonies. Warsong is one of my favourites.
ooooh. Beth meets young master Paul. Intereresting.
I love a good comedy breakdown of songwriting... to that extent, I'd really recommend checking out "Title of the Song" by DaVinci's Notebook. Genuinely funny, incredibly well written, and worthy of your time.
Love this, was cool. Also was nice to see how much you enjoyed it. Protip: (And of course you'll do what you'll do but...) don't pause it. Talk before, after, as much as you like. But this is for an audience. Imagine you paused a movie in a theatre lol. It's like that :p Anyway, you do you, but this was cool =)
Hermosa ,saludos desde mexico
Great reaction! It's such a brilliant comedy routine and quite a sharp commentary on pop music. Although, in the years since I first saw it, it has made me very self-conscious when writing. As nice as it sounds, I could never use I-V-vi-IV again, knowing how ubiquitous it is.
I recently watched a video on common chord progressions and why they work.
The thing with the I-V-vi-IV progression (and it's variants) is that it works very well, all nicely together in the circle of fifths. I actually use it ironically. I went so far to use it to harmonise the licc with it. Sounds about as awful as expected.
Not where I expected to end up on UA-cam tonight but awesome!
Interesting! What's amazing is that so many songs built on the exact same chord progression can still sound so differently because of melody, feel, instrumentation, and a host of other musical variables that make each song unique. There are really quite a few good comedic songs out there, many of which are too good to just be labeled "novelty song.",I recommend Flo & Joan, and Hard & Phirm if you like these guys.
The thing is the progression, especially the IV-I return nicely closes the loop.
Please review Trimuph "Lay it on the Line" live at the US 83 concert. Great lead singer. You'll love him.
i come here for the content and stay for the hair and eyes lovely lady my god bless u!
You should check out "Love Love Peace Peace" by Måns Zelmerlöv and Petra Mede, it's another parody song about how to make a Hit(more specifically a Eurovision Winner), and it's unironically awesome.
What a banger :)
love you :)
I'm fairly certain the crowd went off at the song choice @ 1:56 because it's the first Australian song that comes up and it's by a guy who was pretty big at the time named Alex Lloyd.
I feel this should have been paired with Rob Paravonian's Pachelbel Canon rant.
Kinda would love to see you do Stephen lynch
Jonathan & Charlotte - The Prayer IN FULL (Britain's Got Talent Final 2012) Pleeeeeease!
Please do Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane!

It was a vindication when I first heard this one, yes, yes, that crap always sounded all the same to me, I was right! 🤘🤘
2:05 Amazing is by Alex Lloyd

I am a native Nashvillian. Basically born with a guitar (and never got great, but pretty good). Grew up in the 1990s-2000s. And I figured this out on my own, and made it into a parody 20 years before this... How about Gaga and Adele. Try that. G-D-Em--C (you can drop the Em or swap out sub in an a 'weak F'). Hello Beth! You should react to C tangana tiny desk you will not regret it!!! I would love to see your reaction to that video, is really awesome!!
You can put subtitles in english and knowing the meaning of the song you can catch the vibe into that video! Please do it!!
A good fun reaction.
You’d probably enjoy the group straight no chaser.
These 4 cords is the proof of journey's legacy.
Heyyy Beth, you have to check out the band DAYSEEKER the lead singer Rory Rodriguez is something else, their song SLEEPTALK IS STUCK IN MY HEAD 🔥🔥🔥
Reminds me of the pacabel rant
Beth Roars! The only UA-camr whose name is a proper sentence!
If we're doing Australian comedy I'd love to have you cover Doug Anthony Allstars version of 'Heard it through the grapevine', Beth. The arrangement is, arguably, better than the original.
Ok, just looked that up. Not sure if better than the original, but damn, it was really good.
To appreciate musical comedy a little more, I should recommend The Lonely Island.
Great video! ❤️
Have you ever reacted to Jacques Brel"s Ne Me Quitte pas live I would love to see your reaction,.
It isn't just the same four chords, it is the same order eg: C G Am F, I tesch my guitar students C Am F and G, then they can play about 100 songs.
Some songs also rotate the order, but it's true, with those four chords you can write a lot of songs. Plus they're not the hardest to play on guitar.
hi beth
Please react to "Tim Minchin Canvas Bags", these guys used this song in their act. It's a good song / vid by stand up comedian, and he has good vocals in song, also a very funny comedian :)
Not sure if you are familiar with Canvas Bags, that is is a Tim Minchin song and he is a genius of a song writer and composer. Tim is definitely one that you would probably enjoy. Everyone who likes Tim has their favourite by him but I'd suggest not perfect or dark side.
More Layne please!
Benny (the guy on keyboard) has a youtube channel called "Benny the human Jukebox" (he has actually started posting videos again too).. you should really check out his cover of Stranger in Moscow.
Birdplane is THEIR song. On the 4 chords.
I wish they did more, it's such a shame mental health stopped them.
5:54 That's their song Birdplane
Vocal coach hasn't heard the four chord song.
Progress is being made. Keep this to yourself.
Sammy j and randy are a good comedy singing duet, Nelly is one of my favorites also rem
There's some great Australian comedy recommendations down here in the comments but one of the most powerful singing performances I've ever seen in person was this one; ua-cam.com/video/aFkNRh-Af_I/v-deo.html performed as part of the comedy stage show "Tripod vs the dragon". It's phenomenal, crisp, clear, powerful singing from an otherwise hilarious performer and I would love your reaction.
