It'll be great if we could actually hear the chase themes in game. It plays for like 2 seconds then it's back to silently fighting with the game's climbing mechanics.

    *MH Lore: Crimson Glow Valstrax*
    "Name: Crimson Glow Valstrax (奇しき赫耀のバルファルク)
Title: Sky Comet Dragon (天彗龍)/Star of Despair
    Length: 2040.98cm
    Height: 1329.61cm
    Order: Elder Dragon
    Suborder: Sky Comet Dragon
    Family: Valstrax
    Habitats: Yes (Anywhere it goes)"
"Beware the red comet hurling through the dark. It portends a black future where the heavens and earth shall crumble into nothing. Despair shall alight before you in the form of an argent dragon with innumerable wings. It calls upon the very stars themselves to rend the earth."
"Often depicted as an "Argent Comet"/"Evil Star" since ancient times, Valstrax is an elder dragon that lives beyond the reach of most creatures."
"Constantly on the move, it has been reported in numerous locales around the Old World, but it typically lives in high altitudes, making sightings of it quite rare. However, one particular Valstrax descended from the sky not too long after Ibushi and Narwa were slain."
"This unusual individual emitted a sinister light from its body, making it different from what legends had depicted previously. Due to this unique glow, this Valstrax was given the name "Crimson Glow Valstrax.""
"Crimson Glow Valstrax is a Variant of Valstrax that was recently discovered by the Guild. Identified by the intense evil glow it gives off, this individual's dragon-producing organs are far more active than those of a standard Valstrax."
"It is thought that the rapid production of dragon energy, or Dragonheart (龍気), in its body has driven this individual mad, making it attack all other creatures indiscriminately and causing it to descend from the sky more frequently to feed."
"In the past, as the Rampage grew in size, a mysterious, terrifying screech could often be heard in the sky. That screech was from Crimson Glow Valstrax, and it's thought to be a prelude for things to come (Elder dragons and other powerful monsters appearing during the Rampage)."
"Like the standard Valstrax, Crimson Glow Valstrax is seen as a bad omen that shall deliver all unto ruin. Long ago, in the Sandy Plains, there was a massive oasis in the area that a nearby civilization depended on for business."
"The weather in the area was usually calm, but that changed when an "Argent Comet" appeared. Extreme weather conditions caused by the comet led to much of the area being buried under sand, turning the locale into a sandy wasteland (Current Sandy Plains)."
"(The Valstrax just scared away the inhabitants of the town. The area itself gradually changed due to several environmental factors occurring there for the past few decades. The hunter in the notes likely left that town at a young age, long before the Valstrax appeared there.)"
"Crimson Glow Valstrax has many of the same features as the standard Valstrax. Like Valstrax and Kushala Daora, Crimson Glow Valstrax's scales are highly reflective. It uses those scales to reduce the amount of ultraviolet rays that its body receives as it flies in the sky."
"When the scales are arranged together, they form into a hard shell, or carapace, that's capable of withstanding sonic speed and boiling heat. As the scales and shelling wear, they'll become loose and fall off Crimson Glow Valstrax's body."
"Noticeably, some of the scales and shelling on its body are tinged red, and this is due to the rampant dragon energy in its body (More so the heat it produces)."
"Crimson Glow Valstrax looks somewhat like an "enraged Valstrax" due to so much dragon energy flowing throughout its body (Particularly, its wings), giving it a very sinister appearance. This is especially noticeable when it begins to inhale large amounts of air."
"Like the standard Valstrax, Crimson Glow Valstrax will inhale large amounts of air through its chest and will use specialized organs in its body to transform it into dragon energy, granting it explosive speed and power."
"As it sucks in air, some dragon energy will leak out of its body and touch the outside air, causing its chest to flicker and glow (The dragon energy reacts to the outside air, causing its chest to glow red)."
"Crimson Glow Valstrax will channel the energy it has gathered into its wings, causing them to glow an intense crimson. Due to an overflow of dragon energy, burning red flames can also be seen on its wings."
"Like the standard Valstrax, all of its breathing is done in one direction that ends with its wings. The dragon-producing organs (Air sacs) are closely connected to its wings, leading to it being able to fire dragon energy directly out of them."
"The spike, or lance, on the tip of its wings is essentially its fingertips, while the shelling around the openings on its wings is essentially its fingernails."
"Valstrax can freely reposition the way its wings point, either turning them backward or forward as it fights, as well as change the shape of them in an instant. Depending on the situation, Valstrax can use its wings in a variety of different ways."
"Like other flying monsters, it primarily uses its wings for flight. Rather than flapping its wings, Valstrax fires beams of dragon energy out of the openings on its wings for high-speed flight."
"As it flies through the sky, it'll suck in air through its chest to continue producing the dragon energy it needs for high-speed flight. By firing dragon energy out of its wings, Valstrax can fly as fast as the speed of sound (Mach 1)."
"As it flies at high speed, it looks like an "Argent Comet"/"Evil Star" from afar to people. The air friction it produces while flying, combined with the dragon energy it releases from its wings, makes Valstrax look like an ominous comet. Valstrax even leaves a trail of smoke and soot behind as it flies so fast, further obscuring the dragon from the naked eye. All of this also applies to Crimson Glow Valstrax, but its wings are far more terrifying than those of a standard Valstrax."
"As mentioned above, Crimson Glow Valstrax has rampant dragon energy flowing through its body, and its wings often overflow with said energy when it channels energy into them. While filled with large amounts of dragon energy, they become highly volatile."
"Once charged with dragon energy, Crimson Glow Valstrax's wing-based attacks become more explosive. Due to excess dragon energy in its wings, mounds of dragon energy will leak out of its wings as it uses them for attacks."
"The dragon energy will linger on the ground for a second before exploding. In some cases, it'll even try to knock hunters into the air with its dragon energy before finishing them off with a more powerful blast."
"Due to its wings containing so much dragon energy, Crimson Glow Valstrax is even capable of firing a massive beam from them. This elder dragon will use the excess dragon energy within it to dispatch both enemies and prey."
"To weaken its abilities, hunters must prevent it from channeling energy into its wings. Hunters can temporarily halt Crimson Glow Valstrax's dragon production by aiming for its chest as it charges up or by attacking its wings while they're brimming with dragon energy."
"Too much damage to its chest or wings will cause the dragon energy to explode inside of its body, knocking it over for a short period of time. Like the standard Valstrax, Crimson Glow Valstrax is known to crash into enemies and prey at great speed. Unlike normal individuals, Crimson Glow Valstrax does this more frequently."
"Crimson Glow Valstrax was likely drawn to the Rampage due to abundant prey, much like Magnamalo. With so much prey around during this time, Crimson Glow Valstrax descends from the heavens more frequently to feed since there are numerous targets to choose from."
"It'll pellet its victims with dragon energy before then devouring them. Hunters must be wary because Crimson Glow Valstrax will suddenly descend from the sky without warning if it sees potential prey, which includes other large monsters."
"There are a few causes of Crimson Glow Valstrax suddenly "ambushing" hunters without warning (It's targeting the monsters we're hunting). Since it flies at lower altitudes, "meteor showers" (Pieces of its shell falling off its body as it flies) may occur as well. To Crimson Glow Valstrax, anything that catches its eye is potential prey, including other elder dragons apparently."
"When enraged, large amounts of dragon energy will erupt from Crimson Glow Valstrax's nostrils, chest, and sides. As indicated by their crimson glow, those parts are incredibly hot due to the boiling draconic fluids."
"The scales portend disasters while its wings phase in an otherworldly fashion. The claws of Valstrax are remarkably hard and sharp and have torn up countless peacetimes. The spineshell, which is sharp like a blade, protects the back of Valstrax. The tail shines like a comet."

Ho boy, this guy has some neat details, even in Master Rank.
First, if you look at the Hunter's Notes on Valstrax, you'll notice that he seems to have a 25 or 20 against all elements except Dragon. This is a ruse! Most of the time the Dragon energy he's surrounded by makes him outright IMMUNE to elemental damage. You're far better off employing something like Blast or Poison against him for extra damage.
His melee weapons all have two things in common - first, they have white sharpness for days before immediately dropping to red, the worst sharpness possible. Second, they all have excellent Dragon damage; this makes his versions of weapons that excel at doing elemental damage - Sword & Shield and Dual Blades come to mind - the best for dealing Dragon-weak foes. Interestingly though, his Lance is actually considered to be one of the top two best Lances _overall_ due to its solid raw and very long white sharpness.
Back before Sunbreak came out, Valstrax's armor was top tier thanks to its unique Dragonheart ability. When your HP was reduced to a certain level, you would contract Dragonblight. However, this was a special form of it - you would still be able to deal Dragon-element damage, and you would, depending on how many ranks of Dragonheart you had, get additional benefits. It worked as follows, based on # of ranks:
1: At 50% HP or less, your elemental resistances would be raised to 30.
2: At 50% HP or less, your elemental resistances would be raised to 50.
3: At 70% HP or less, your elemental resistances would be raised to 50.
4: At 70% HP or less, your elemental resistances would be raised to 50 and you would get 5% more raw.
5: At 80% HP or less, your elemental resistances would be raised to 50 and you would get 10% more raw.
The Master Rank armor also comes with skills like Resentment, Resuscitate, and Weakness Exploit. Sadly, with all of the new damage-boosting skills like Dereliction, Bloodlust, Mail of Hellfire, Buildup Boost and the like, Dragonheart has really fallen off.
Edit: One year later, I do have one caveat regarding its element - Valstrax's front legs remain weak to the non-Dragon elements even when he's charged up. Element-focused builds are thus encouraged to wail on those whenever he's filled with Dragon energy, especially if you're employing skills like Element Exploit.

    • @cosmictraveler1146
      @cosmictraveler1146 9 місяців тому

Pretty late but An addendum should he made:
While it does take no elemental damage on most of its body while powered up his front legs and wings(I think lmao) still take elemental damage and if you brake them it’ll topple and lose the power up!

    • @JanusHoW
      @JanusHoW 9 місяців тому

@@cosmictraveler1146 You are correct. The front legs keep that 25 to all elements except Dragon even when he's powered up. Dual Blades users are thus encouraged to focus their attacks exclusively on those when he's enraged.

Valstrax’s original theme was too over the top. But Rise Sunbreak’s version packs just the right amount of punch. Plus it’s more fitting for it. It starts out calm as it circles the sky in an ambush. And when it crashes down, things get intense. Just like it’s Rise Sunbreak theme.

  • @JanusHoW
    @JanusHoW 2 місяці тому

    A comment after a year:
After beating the main story of Sunbreak, you will start facing monsters afflicted by the Qurio that the now dead Gaismagorm once commanded as they search for a new host. However, unlike previous games, elder dragons can be affected by the Qurio. But because of their various qualities, infected elders invariably overcome their sickness and grow stronger because of it, becoming "Risen" elder dragons.
This includes Crimson Glow Valstrax. Risen Crimson Glow Valstrax (which has the longest name for any monster in the series now) takes everything about the normal version and amps it up to eleven, including adding an ORBITAL STRIKE to its trademark ambush attack.
Meanwhile, RCGV has its own armor set: the "Crimson Valstrax - Epoch" set, and it has one of the most interesting and useful DPS skills in the game: Dragon Conversion.
First, when you are using the Red Skill Scroll, Dragon Conversion sets all of your elemental resistances - including negatives - to 0. However, the game checks the resistances on each armor piece, and takes any _positive_ values and then adds either 15% (if the skill is level 1 or level 2) or 25% (if the skill is at its maximum level of 3) of that number to your element. The skill also adds 3/5/10 points to all of your resistances. At level 2, if you attack while on Blue Skill Scroll, your elemental resistances will build up gradually as you deal damage, and when you switch back to Red after building up enough resistance, that added elemental resistance will be applied to your elemental damage!
While Dragon Conversion is native to the RCGV armor set, it can also be added to armor via the game's Qurious Crafting system, and can also be obtained through Qurious Melding, which makes the game's strongest charms. This makes it pair well with the "Furious" skill (which can also be obtained via Qurious Crafting and Qurious Melding), since it increases your elemental resistances while in Red Scroll. This also makes eating the element resistance dango a direct damage boost!
