Same. I bought a Citizen CB0160-51L Eco-Drive radio-controlled world timer used in perfect condition for $80. Tell ya what...nothing like being able to grab and go and KNOW that the thing is dead-on accurate. Even across daylight savings time changes. I stayed up last time just to watch it. It's just so easy. I still love the mechanical watches n my collection but I have nothing against quartz at all now. Now, to find a way to get a Grand Seiko 9F movement based model :)

Its always great to have the option of spending $200 or less for a well machined, well assembled, accurate, functional, beautiful, and stylish timepiece. Buying an automatic at that price generally means major tradeoffs. Quartz is reliable, offers more functionality at a lower price and is less of a hassle. Sure you lose some of the soul and heritage you get with mechanical watches, but even that argument grows tiresome. And lets be real, heritage/craftsmanship is a selling point of mechanical watches entirely made up by dying luxury watch brands during the Quartz Crisis. Snobs need to get over themselves, pointless complexity might be beautiful, but its also exceedingly stupid, lets not pretend otherwise. This is coming from someone with many Autos and manual wound watches, and I absolutely love them, but I admit I bought/continue to buy into the bullshit a little. Just wish more people in the community would be aware of that fact too.

Anyway, in this instance, and as it happens, I have several of both ilk, but if I'm being candid, the one I rely on to set the time for all of 'em, is my solar Casio, that sets itself via one of the world's many atomic clocks. They resent it to me by another shipping agent and it is somewhere floating in space between their offices and me in Tokyo. In the meantime I ordered three casios from Amazon which were sent to me from Indiana, USA which arrived in Tokyo in less than three days. Come one, Phoibos - straighten out your shipping agents.

Phoibos seems to have really started going their own way in terms of styling. I wonder what other designs they are going to release down the road. Those who complain about this watch being quartz seriously don't understand how expensive adding complications to automatic watches is. Quartz watches are for accurate time keeping. You buy mechanical watches when you want something quirky to mess around with.

  • @Pew7070
    @Pew7070 4 роки тому

My first good watch was a Quick Silver PVD coated bronze quartz ana/digi watersports piece. So I’m not discarding a watch just on the basis of it being quartz.
In the years since I bought a few quartz pieces: a 6.87mm thick Seiko Kinetic, a Casio Duro, a Casio AQ-S800W solar ana/digi, a solar radio controlled G-Shock, a Citizen ProMaster Eco Drive, a Citizen Eco Drive Aviator.
After that I turned to the dark side and converted to mechanical watches but still spent some dough on a Seiko SKA785 Kinetic just a few weeks ago.
So to spend $200 on this piece the minimum requirement would be solar. I’m done with the battery changing gig.
But thank you for making it short and concise! 👍🏻👊🏻

I love my quartz watches. High-end Japanese quartzes are really intriguing to me, there's a lot of cool technology out there. I'm especially interested in this GMT because it is much thinner than their other divers.
I've had mechanicals ranging from time only to perp calendars. The only one I've kept is my GMT Master II - I am perpetually irritated at having to cycle watches, and even when I had multiple watches, I always set them off my quartz watches. Watch snobbery is unbelievably irritating.
I like to joke that a mechanical watch is a luxury you have to show you do not need to be on time.

I hated it!! It is one of the most uncomfortable straps I have put on my wrist, and I've replaced a few frog leather Chinese straps over the last couple of years, thanks to Jody. Stiff and really scratches my wrist and just feels cheap. Wore it around the house for a couple hours hoping to break it in a little, no good. I'd definitely grab a quartz.....I don't think the Bulova is very interesting looking. But I'm aware of them. I have a semi romance towards mechanical watches anyway.

Agreed it’s pretty. Quartz does not bother me especially as it even makes the case thinner. Did prefer the blue or green colourways and my moans and niggles are the fluted bezel and would of preferred the minute railroad track without the Roman numerals. Having said all that it’s a crazy low price and a real steal.
Loved the T shirt and the intro, the review wasn’t half bad either Jody. Excellent stuff 😁👍

I went through a quartz phase, then it came time to change the batteries 😖👎. Now I have a few selected quartz battery cell watches and a half dozen or so eco drive quartz but the rest are all automatic. Nice looking piece though!

Thank you for standing up for quartz. I have also had great luck and fondness for solar.
Another special holiday thank you to Jody...you introduced me to Phoibos watch and now I own 3 ( never had ANY issues with them)
Like anything, I may not like all the models they offer, but LOVE the ones I have...think Phoibos is going to be my first GMT👍
Once again thank you for your wonderful, informative, entertaining videos and very Happy Holidays to you and yours.
    Love the tshirt!

It's not that I dislike quartz, but I like it best in full electronic form with digital display. My favorite is the Casio G-Shock DW-5600. If it has hands, I usually prefer the sweeping movement of a mechanical watch, with the exception of mecha-quartz which does have a sweeping second hand. The jumpy second's hand just gives a watch that cheap $5 movement look in my opinion.

Quartz GMT watches are super for long haul air travel where an automatic might not receive enough movement to keep running. And Quartz watches are so light - again no bad thing when trapped in an aluminum tube for 8+ hours. I have a Davosa GMT that is the perfect traveller and I suspect this watch would be super as well. Plus, the price! Thanks for showing this one, mate.

I have a few great quartz watches, and will buy many more in the future! Plus quartz chronos don't have nearly the service cost a auto/mechanical chrono has!!!! Actually saving up to gift myself a TAG Heuer quartz Aquaracer for my fortieth in year!

Very nice watch, have to agree, probably one of the better looking Phoiboses..Phoibosi? Like that they went with the inner rotating bezel, gives it a bit of different look and feel.

The only reason I'm upset this is a quartz is that I already have a quartz GMT (with Ronda movement, actually,) and I've been hoping to add a mechanical to compliment it, and I've also been hoping to add a Super Compressor-style watch, so if this were a mechanical it would have let me kill two birds with one stone. But of course that's a problem with where I am in my collection journey, not a problem with Phoibos or their product.
That said, this looks so wonderful I might have to pick one up anyway! (And that price is incredible.) Thanks as always for the honest review and the open, accepting mindset, Jody!

I like quartz watches...as long as they can do a bit more than just tell the time & date in one timezone. So this looks pretty great! The 41mm x 47mm hits a sweet spot for me. I'd pay $300 if they offered modified gilt version: black/gray meteorite dial w/gold-tone bezel and a gold-tone crown protector spanning between the crowns...or just do away with the second crown and keep the 24hr markers fixed. I love the strap but a bracelet option would be nice. Great job, Phoibos!

Always glad to see a new video of yours whenever I open up UA-cam. Personally I like using a quartz watch (G-shock) whenever I'm traveling for work. But if I am at home, I tend to stick with an auto.

Great video! I like this watch. I do think there is a definite role for the quart watch. Imagine traveling with more than one watch and not having to take a winder. My quartz's are always there on my dresser and can always be trusted to be worn. No fighting for open spots on the winder. No winding or adjusting the time. What do those "no-quartz people say when they see a smart watch like the Samsung Active 2? I think they will pass out. Try making a phone call or answering a text off your automatic. There is a place for everything.

Quartz movements are part of the evolution of time keeping. Unfortunately, the economy of manufacture allows for cheap throw-aways resulting in a negative image of property executed quartz watches. Not all quartz movements are of equal quality. Thanks for reminding us that quartz is not inherently bad. This is a good watch for the money and I imagine this same watch with an ETA movement would be up around $1,000.00.

    Hallo Jody,
Phoibos is getting more and more interesting. I personally think this is a beautiful, compact watch, with a quality movement. Yes, sometimes a need the tic-tac of a mechanical, and sometimes I'll take the comfort of my Seiko sports with a good quality quartz movement, nothing wrong with that. Happy holidays my Scottish friend from far away. Greetings from the Netherlands!

When I first started collecting, I definitely leaned more towards automatics. I still do, if I'm honest, but a solid quartz movement can be great for accuracy, reliability, and longevity with no services. I'm particularly fond of solar quartz movements. I have the GW-M5610 G-Shock and for me this is probably the perfect quartz. Solar charging, 200m water resistance and it syncs to the atomic clock every night so I know it's the most accurate watch in the collection. I set my automatics to that watch. I also have the Seiko Solar PADI Diver and find that to be an excellent grab-and-go. More recently I acquired a Seiko SUN023 Kinetic GMT, and I think that will be the chosen travel watch. Don't knock quartz watches.👍

I have two Phoibos watches, and love them both. My Reef Master is one of my favourite watches, and the Eagle Ray GMT is brilliant. My gripe is that they are always out of stock of most of the watches, and if you have to buy from Phoibos Europe they cost more.

That is really a looker !! I'm thinking about getting the gilt version. They all look pretty damn good tho !! Personally, I have no problem with quartz. I prefer automatics but I wouldn't not get a watch I like just because it was quartz.

Hi Jody. Love your watch reviews. I have purchased many watches after your excellent vlogs. Have several Phoibos watches which represent great value for money. Prefer autos to quartz. Tried your discount code JOMW10 and it didn’t recognise it on the Phoibos website. I ordered the watch anyway. Keep the reviews coming. Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year mate.

Nothing wrong with Quartz watches, as collectors we have to appreciate all styles of watches after all the Ronda movement is still a Swiss 🧀 movement...personally I think 💭 we as watch enthusiasts we should be careful not to become watch snobs.
