The directing and script failed to show and specify all the dramatic beats in this scene, but storywise it made sense especially when you rewatch the season a second time. It was established in the previous season that Dragonstone would be the port where Daeneris would arrive from Essos with his fleet as it was made of protected bays shield by rock sea mountains. Daenirs was basically ambushed by the iron fleet that was hidden behind these rocks as it was the perfect defense and ambush spot as previously established.

Melisandre absolutely needs to die by ritual suicide after completing her final "purpose". The problem is, she doesn't have any, so she does it after lighting an unrelated Dothraki army's swords for some reason. Season 8 needed the gods/prophecies to play a bigger role. Rhyllor's motivation for Jon/Dany, some final Arya Faceless deception, the Old Gods patient masterplan, the Seven's peasant rebellions getting utterly crushed, and the Night King briefly taking the throne.

The problem with all this stuff is that the Night King is entirely the invention of Dan & Dave. At this moment he is not a canon character. The Showrunners switched the emphasis from George's story to this zombie army schtick (possibly to attract the moms and NFL players they were so keen on). And that, basically, is the whole problem with the end of the long night in season 8. They kinda forgot that they had to bring George's story to a conclusion too, so ended up curtailing both that and their own zombie story in their haste to reach the exit door marked Disney riches, which then ironically got slammed in their faces, trapping them in their own dumpster fire.

I remember, when season 8 was close to being released, I was predicting that the Night King would conqueror all of the North and push his way South. My thoughts exactly. So often it has been mentioned on how all the squabbling houses don't matter, on how the only way Westeros can survive is by uniting together and on how this isn't only a northern war but a southern one as well. And in the end it had 0 consequences for the south. Hell it even didn't have any real consequences for Daenerys either seeing how easily she took King's Landing.

@@mattrobinson4663 Yeah it's an idea of plot I already saw multiple times and it allows for the white walkers to be the ultimate series threat. It would also have make Cersei's hustle comes back to her face as she would then believe that her not helping the North made the army of the dead be able to reach King's Landing. And her dying to the Night King, even if not really climatic, would still have been a better death than the one she got (it's not really difficult to beat, even her getting instakilled by the Hound instead of bypassing freely would have make more sense than this).
The other plothole it would have fix would have been Daenerys going mad. Really I can't find good reasons for her to turning mad in such little time compared to 7 seasons of sanity. She sometimes made harsh decisions that can sound cruel like bruning the Tarlys (making politically important targets as lords your prisonners doesn't mean you will allow everyone who doesn't bent the knee to follow the same path, they would just burn because of being nobodies, that's something she forgot when making this decision). But those decisions were always having a logic behind even if twisted sometimes like I stated before.
The aftermath of this could have been her understanding in some way that she shouldn't try to rule a people that despise her, and go back to the Esos cities she ruled back then. I mean this is a lesson she should have get by witnessing Jorah's actions toward her. He was the character who loved her the most in the purest love, and never forced anything on her, even if that meant no answer from her.

In the books it is heavily forshadowed that Jaime will kill Cersei, as there's a prophecy that she will be killed by her younger brother which she thinks means Tyrion but is actually most likely Jaime (he is a few minutes younger than Cersei). That his army was there, and Jon and co fought his massive army, and after a brutal battle they won. However, no Night King. The mad queen arc still would have made no sense because there really wasn't much of a hint throughout any of the series that Danaris was going crazy, and her sudden shift would have still felt off. Yes, with your explanation, she'd feel the pain of losing her second child, but with how we've seen Danny throughout the series, that was not a good enough reason for her to suddenly murder civilians. Honestly, the mad queen arc should have just been removed all together, OR they needed to start showing her become ruthless in season 7, showing her start to kill innocent people, where the first few times, she'd justify it, but we the audience could see the seed being planted and watch it slowly begin to flourish.

I think the single battle worked in the sense that it was an all-or-nothing, life-or-death battle; you either killed the Night King, or he trampled you and continued south.
My issue is with the fact that there was literally 0 White Walker action in the battle itself, they just walked through and stood in the Godswood until Arya whisped right by them and took out NK. There should've been more WW fights within the waves, and once a couple drop and the army dwindles, NK decides it's time to enter the fray himself - we get the dragonfire immunity scene, then the Jon vs. NK scene where there's an ACTUAL fight before NK raises more undead and yeets out.

I was saddened that there wasn't even a genuine hand-to-hand combat scene regarding the Night King. Like really? You've been setting it up all this time, and just, he walks in, sees Bran, and just dies? No sword fight, and just an Arya stupidly screaming while doing a surprise attack that somehow managed to land (how did she sneak through all the other white walkers and whites? Hmmm)

He will die to the White Walkers following his sword breaking and thus, it's made clear he is not The Prince Who Was Promised.
A far more epic end for a complex character. Fuck D&D for writing the character out in such a shit way, killed by Brienne Of Tarth... ugh.

Cersei should have been the mad queen who blows the city, because the sound of bells triggers her (walk of shame, Remember? ) and she despises the people, but the lords accuse daenerys of burning the city because she is the daughter of Aerys. Or daenerys could just start off the fire accidentaly while trying to melt to the red keep after the troops having surrendered, and it would be a consequence to her for wanting revenge so fast and not controlling herself. either ways people will see her as the usurper that she always wanted to fight, especially after news spreading about jon being rhaegar's son, this has always been a part of her arc.

this would also provide the perfect opportunity for Jaime to kill Cersei, whether he ends up dying or not. Killing either Cersei for burning down Kings Landing is a mirror of his killing of King Aerys and brings his arc full circle, is in character for his prioritization of innocents above all else, shows us he has grown to understand he is worth more than Cersei, with the bittersweet twist that he didn't recognize it in her earlier, so his greatest accomplishment (stopping Aerys for burning King's Landing) was undone by the blindness of his love for her. Bonus points if Jon finds him in the throne room like Ned did, only he doesn't immediately judge him and instead understands the choice (the whole duty vs love theme being brought up again).

THAT IS WHAT WAS SUPPOSE TO HAPPEN, Wildfire from underneath the city was the one that burns down kings landing, the special effects team said originally it was wildfire, but last minute DnD asked it to change to dragonfire. Also Emilia Clarke was acting in those scenes, not knowing her character was going to be made a villain, she said she was very upset and didn’t know that that was going to happen. She just thought Dany was attacking JUST the Red Keep, and Dany burns a few innocents because Cersei put civilians in the red keep as protection, but Dany didn’t know that and eventually felt bad about the whole ordeal.

@Gilles Jacquemin I wholly agree that they didn't value the actual title of the book series, but my perspective is that ice versus fire.
I don't think Dany will be mad, as her father probably wasn't as well. He just had a vision (Hodor style) of Dany fighting against WW and yelled to burn them all: the WW, not his people.
And I don't think any dragon should be dead before that. Three dragons, three (potencial) targeryens: Dany, Jon and Tyrion. One of the dragons is even smaller and it's stabilished from very early that Tyrion knows how to design special saddles.
Tyrion was robbed of his dragon. The final battle, ice versus fire, should indeed be i Kings Landing, three dragon riders leading the last defense against the WW.

It is true they took a lot of stuff from the books l, but they did create new things too..one of my favourite scenes from the entire show was the chaos is a ladder talk..this obviously couldn’t have happened in the books, since they are POV oriented and that would reveal basically everything..so they are actually skilled writers, but they just didn’t concentrate and try as much for later seasons, especially 8, cos they were lazy and wanted to move on to SW without finishing GoT properly..

Honestly, I would've made the Night King the final obstacle. In my version, Battle of Winterfel would still happen. But there would be better setup:
    - The Crypt has a secret passageway for those who cannot fight to escape to safety.
    - The Army of the Dead arrives at night, but with better lighting (moon idea makes sense, plus seeing the army would affect morale).
    - There are 3 Moats of Spikes instead of 1. And they are lit up as soon as the Army attacks.
    - Each group of the Living are behind each of those Moats, ensuring that the dead can't simply use themselves as bridges.
    - Trebuchets are set up between the Wall & the last Moat, allowing for them to hit the army with range many more times.
    - Archers with Obsidian Arrows are lined up on the Walls.
    - No "Charging Calvary" bs.
    - No "Half" bs.
The fight happens, they unleash hell on the dead, but they are still overwhelmed. Dany & Jon still hit them with dragon fire, but never land.
The dead still make it inside Winterfel, but its not as ridiculous. Still, characters do die. Sandor dies. Jorah dies. Greyworm dies. Tormund dies. Arya is badly wounded to where she can't fight anymore. Beric lives. Sam fled with the others who can't fight (seriously, he would die, no question if he fought). Lyanna Mormont survives with injuries. Everyone else like Brienne, Jaime, Jon, Dany, etc do survive, but with their armor torn up (even the metal armor).
At the end, they cheer for their survival, but Jon is worried cause the Night King wasn't there. Bran realizes where he is; He's nearly made it to King's Landing. His other Wight Walkers (who can control undead) are attacking other places as they go.
The Night King's undead is what started the show. The Night King will bring the end.
    With this:
    - Jaime never betrays his character.
    - We don't have to see Cersei betray her character.
    - We don't have that idiotic "She forgot about the Iron Fleet"
    - We don't have the crummy "Mad queen for no reason"
    - The Long Night episode wasnt about that one battle, it was merely about him starting it.

8:56 The problem with the kingdoms becoming independent again is that it goes against the message of unity, especially with what we got with the White Walkers. The Iron Throne was a problem, but this ain't it either. When the Seven Kingdoms were seven kingdoms, they constantly fought wars with each other. It was basically the war over the Iron Throne but on loop. Don't see how them going their separate ways again would break the wheel, if anything it would cause the wheel to spin even faster, like it did historically in ASOIAF.

At the beginning of the show he was with Robb in the Godswood when he declared so go against the Lannisters and years later he would be there to protect Robb's and his own brother. With this act, he would prove himself as a true Stark. It would have been unexpected, but not stupid - if you ask me since he didn't have any interaction with the Night King neither. Bran should have told Arya to kill him, take his face and marked arm and wait for the exact moment to kill NK. And that's only if we still consider NK going after Bran had any sense.

That would explain the marks in episode one of both 1st and 8th season, which highly resemble those on the Targaryen banner. Furthermore, it would make the information that John Snow is a Targaryen actually relevant, and would make their final showdown that much more satisfying

    • @Schaemia
      @Schaemia 3 роки тому +2

A rewrite where Dany survives...based on the broad strokes of what we got...would just be terribly painful for her character. A) She would have to give up the very thing she was fighting for all along (The Throne). B) She would have to give up her last remaining family. C) She would be framed as a villain no matter what she did, because many people would have to die (either through the NK's actions or Cersei's). D) The Dragons would always be seen as a threat to the people of Westeros--it's kind of like the USA with all their nukes; people follow them because they have to, not because they want to...which is not a good message to send. That's my 2cents on the issue....11 months later after I coincidentally got mad about the ending again and ended up here.

I honestly thought they were going for the "winter has come" ending or that they would make the living EARN their win. Like, we don't have the full picture of how many soldiers the Night King had, but what I thought was going to happen was: the Night King sends a part of his forces and some walkers to try and take Winterfell (mostly to get more troops) and march with his main force south, to King's Landing and the rest of the land (he has a dragon and his troops don't ever tire, he could do it fairly fast and take everyone by surprise). Hell, I thought that snowing in King's Landing was foreshadowing for the poor folk dying from the harshness of winter, which would, in turn 'cause the city to fall, since the Night King could've raised an army just from that and it would turn the city into a living hell. And this is just if the NK wasn't feeling lazy, 'cause he could've won just from keeping everyone inside their castles while covering everyone in that blizzard, white walkers can apparently cause. Uuuuuuugh. They completely wasted the Walkers. -_-

My proposition for an improved Season 8 general layout (based on what you've proposed in the video); throughout the series Bran will provide aerial recon with his warging abilities.
Episode 3: Battle of Winterfell: The living come up with a much better strategy for the living side than the one we got (based on actual siege defense tactics courtesy of Invicta, and with Bran providing aerial recon), but the dead nevertheless overrun Winterfell; Tormund, Edd, Jorah, Lyanna, Theon and Beric die while the survivors among the living (including Sansa, Arya, Bran, Davos Jon, Dany, Grey Worm, Missandei, Jaime, Brienne, Podrick, Tyrion and the rest of the gang).
Episode 4: The survivors (from here on out I will refer to them as the Northern Coalition) flee through the Riverlands to Kings Landing while being harrassed by small packs of wights; at one point they end up in a three-way battle between undead and Lannister forces. Meanwhile, Daenerys promises the North their independence if they stay by her side through the Great War and they survive.
Episode 5: The Northern Coalition besiege, assault, and take King's Landing, executing Cersei which outrages Jaime. Rhaegal is also killed by the scorpions mounted on the wall, which causes Dany to snap and raze King's Landing to the ground. Sandor Clegane also duels Gregor and both fall into the flames of the burning city.
Episode 6: The survivors of the Battle of Winterfell and the Destruction of King's Landing (Northmen, Wildlings, Brotherhood Without Banners, Dothraki, Unsullied, and surviving Lannister forces and Golden Knights) prepare for a last stand in King's Landing, including setting booby traps with Wildfire in the surrounding area, while Dany and Drogon attack the advancing undead army to buy time for their preparations. Meanwhile, Jon and Dany have a heated argument about about burning King's Landing to the ground, while Jaime attempts to desert only to be stopped by Brienne and the arrival of the White Walkers.
Episode 7: The dead assault King's Landing. Davos, Grey Worm and Missandei fall; Arya shoots down Viserion with a scorpion bolt tipped with dragonglass, and she, Jaime and Jon engage the Night King; Jaime is slain, and Jon is impaled in the leg. As the Night King moves to kill Jon, Arya rushes the Night King from behind, engaging him in a vicious duel, during which Jon takes the upper hand and drives Longclaw into the Night King's back. All of the White Walkers shatter into ice, and the wights are released from their power and rest at last; the Long Night is over.
Episode 8: The living celebrate their bittersweet victory over the dead. Maddened by all that she has lost, however, Daenerys reneges on her earlier deal and promises to "liberate" the world; in doing so she declares the North as part of her envisioned realm, therefore losing the support of House Stark and the rest of the North. As the North declares war on Daenerys Targaryen, and vice versa, the stage is set for Season 9.

imo most of the characters who do not have a major impact but still important should have died in the long night and maybe some major characters like arya for instance because her part in the series is already not important should've made a dramatic death, after winterfell should be overrun by the wights and after that the main character's and the survivors break into a run for their lives and the whole plot in the season should revolve somewhat over that because truly the night king's part is laughable after all that build up during the series sadly.

That's not working. There is no universe where Daenarys will target innocents even enraged. It's like saying Jon Snow would start slaughtering innocents if he saw both his father and Ygritte getting beheaded one second from each other in real life. Rage TOWARDS the one that hurts you - THAT's the immediate human instinct because hurting that one person is the FIRST thought you're going to get and in that situation you'll follow it. Not the crowd around you, it's not how humans work (except if they actively try to get in your way). Daenarys going immediately for Cercei, not for everyone around it.
