"all of the best parts make you sorry. all of the worst parts make you strong." such a simple lyric. so perfect. thank you.
The context of the song adds so much to that meaning as well. The whole premise being that Andy’s parents wouldn’t let him go trick or treating because Halloween was considered satanic. All the good things in life are usually considered sinful (like Halloween candy) and all the things we struggle with and hate are the things that bring us closer to god… what a way to live.

I feel like this song is the sinister conclusion of the character Norm. Traveling out of the city, with his victim on Halloween. Satan is waiting for Norm. Chilling the contrast from my first listen to listening now after Norm.

I've been noticing this new thing Andy's doing with his voice that I really like, kind of the opposite of the Bob Dylan trail-off, where his voice gently glides up in pitch after a phrase

When I first listened to this song I envisioned "Satan is waiting with Halloween candy" was a double entendre for some kid dressed as Satan knocking at the protagonist's door on Halloween whilst the protagonist, in isolation, was dealing with their own demons, tempting them to open the door to self resentment, self pity, and depression. Beautiful irony.
That’s really interesting! I read it a lot differently. I grew up 7th day Adventist (which is Protestant Christian). And so growing up I was never allowed to celebrate Halloween. Year after year, I wasn’t allowed to dress up and and go trick or treating with my non-Christian friends from the neighbourhood. Instead, on Halloween, my dad would turn off all the lights in the house, put up a “no candy” sign on the door and he would put on some nature movie in the living room. I really read into this song that way. Every time I listen to this song I cry for the 8 year old in me who just wanted to have fun with her friends but couldn’t because “Satan was waiting with Halloween candy “
@@francisrogers2146 Your interpretation is more accurate to Andy’s intent as revealed in an interview with him concerning this song (forgive me, I recall not where it was). I still prefer my interpretation, but this is the beauty of this song: it welcomes the imagination.

it’s been mentioned a lot what a nice job Andy has done. And it’s true. The vibe of the song is unique in a way. Ryan steels visual language should also be highlighted though, as it really complements the nostalgic feeling in Andy’s song and makes the whole thing perfect. Thanks for your work Andy and Ryan. I appreciate it a lot over here in Germany.

I love this. We all focus way too much on ourselves when the movie of life is going on around us if only we could get outside our heads and simply be present.
I interpret this lyric completely different. When you consider the subject matter of the song and the lyrics in whole, it makes much more sense that this line would be a reference to Satan wanting to keep you distracted.
@@kevinjohnson3715 I think it's perfect because of it. It's one of those lines that applies to the listener depending on their experience of life and need to reflect.

It could equally be about The Mind, which is a kind of Satan, distracting us from living with an endless stream of worries, tricks, puzzles and trivialities.

I like how as the song progresses and when we get to the climax his voice gets a little muffled in the mix. I love that detail! It shows how artistic Andy is. For me it's like he's telling us that the moments are getting distorted same with his voice or idk maybe I'm just stupid.
