David's having so much fun telling this story, it makes it even more interesting to listen to.
    Enthusiastic storytellers are the best.
May the sailors rest in peace. They certainly deserve it after their traumatic ordeal.

If the movie of Killers Of The Flower Moon does as well as the book has, with rave reviews everywhere, then no doubt Martin Scorsese will make this book, The Wager, into a movie too. I'll bet he's already bought the film rights to it. 😉 ✌🏼

Hello Ana, David and True Crime Daily family! These older stories are absolutely fascinating. Thank goodness for historians. These crimes and stories would be lost if this valuable information wasn’t preserved. It is so interesting that these men, while in the midst of a horrible trauma, are so worried about be prosecuted. Turn a blind eye is something I have heard for years, I love knowing the origin. Have a wonderful weekend everybody.. My Husband is headed to Las Vegas in a few hours. The Killers Of The Flower Moon. The name of David's other book and movie sounded familiar, so I just went and read up on it a bit at Wikipedia. The story is a fascinating one, and the book got positively RAVE reviews from every single source of reviews! So I have got to read it, and to see the movie, which is due for release in Oct 2023.
I will try to see the movie first though, since good books are next to impossible to adapt to film. There is just too much info to fit into a movie, even a long one, so the movie always feels disappointing if I've already read the book. But if I see the movie first, I can still thoroughly enjoy the book, especially if it's nonfiction, as this one is.
But this is a different story he tells here. The fact that from his other book, Killers Of The Flower Moon, he is considerred a truly great writer makes me think that I've got to read this one too. I missed the name of it, but it must be mentioned at the start or end of the interview, or in the description area.
Yes, it was there, in the description. It's called "The Wager, A Tale Of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder." There's also a link to its page on Amazon, if we want to buy it.

Whenever I've expressed anthing at all passionately, or merely even honestly, in any area of life, I've always been accused of exaggerating, and even being being histrionic. It's so depressing to live in a world that discourages honesty. We are forcing ourselves and others into a small box. All of the things that are touted as being progress and improvements are in reality just tools of imprisonment. Yet we blindly just go along with it. So depressing.
But anyway, it does seem like a great book! I'd just love to read it! There's nothing better than a great dramatic story written passionately (within reason) by a person with good insight and a gift for words!

But I’d be HELLA PISSED if this gentleman was NOT hired to be the producer and directors right hand man to MAKE SURE that this is 100% completely historically accurate. My great x 6 uncle was Robert Edwards who was gifted 77 acres of land in America by the Queen which is now known as Manhattan, he allowed the Catholic Church to lease the land for 99yrs and we spent many years & lots of money back in the 60’s to reclaim the rental money paid to the catholic church after the 99yr lease was up, which was kept in chancery to the rightful owners which is our family, Uncle Robert left the land to our family in his will & we have the Will/full family tree/family bible etc we tried again in the 90’s but it’s so much money the church nor America will give it back…you can look it all up, it’s all completely true and many many programs have been made about it…we laugh about it now..when we see Manhattan we say ‘We own that’ 😂 it’s a interesting story and I’m sure there are many similar out there 😊

So interesting that a similar story happened with another ship from the British East Indian Comapny. I had to double check on the name of the ship, be ause the story was so similar. That Chapter made an awesome podcast about it - the mutiny on the Batavia.

I believe that they saw the survival of these men as being more of an achievement than was thought, hence the lack of punishment. Not just to save face on the mutiny….. always trying to make the British sound bad in some way.

I think the book would still be worth reading. He is only giving us a gloss over. The details in the book will be amazing no doubt. Especially if he is a good a writer as people say. He writes it as a story rather than a history textbook so the characters will be so interesting.

I just had a thought relating to the part about the State preferring to pretend like some war crimes don't happen: maybe that's eh same thinking at play with Wikileaks releasing US helicopter footage of them killing unarmed civilians & journalists? Maybe that's why Julian has spent more than a decade in a kind of "limbo"? Maybe that's what the State wants- because bringing him to trial would allow people to see the nature of the crimes he exposed?
Loved this episode anyway- was awesome 😎

Let’s see how true the tale is as many have studied the culture of the periods and know accurate information and facts. Many know “Hollywood” fiction tales only.
