    - ABOUT ME -
    Hi there! My name is Laurie Robyn (shocking, I know) and when I as about twelve years old I discovered the world of UA-cam. A whole new world opened up to me and I have never left since. After years of building up the courage, I finally decided that I wanted to create my own UA-cam channel on which I could upload videos that would take you along on my journey throughout life.
    I am an ordinary girl from the Netherlands who is obsessed with the United Kingdom and I have a great passion for too many things. After being a student at the University of Stirling, Scotland, for one full year, I decided to make the move and officially emigrate to the land of sexy accents and weird driving habits (yes!). On my UA-cam channel I share videos on various topics that I find interesting: from student advice, beauty and lifestyle, to travel and daily life vlogs. I am no expert in any way shape or form - honestly, I often have no clue what I am doing - but if you need some friendly advice, I’m always here to help! :-) Sound interesting? Subscribe to my channel (it is completely free) and do not miss a thing!
    Lots of love,
    Laurie

      I think that's because Dutch people begin to learn English at school at an age of 10. Also, we hear a lot of English every day, because lots of tv-programs and series we watch, are in English and because we live in a very tiny country, it's also really important for us to learn English because otherwise we couldn't understand most of the people in the world.
      For example, I am 14 years old and I watch more English UA-camrs than Dutch UA-camrs and I am learning English at school since an age of 10 I think.
      I think not every English sentence I made was good, but I hope you can understand me.

      Adding to what Liam said, the Netherlands is a tiny country, so it's good to be able to speak English (as lots of people speak English too) in order to do business and things like that! 😊

    • @dn5026
      @dn5026 6 років тому +14

      To add onto this even further, there is a certain level of immersion in English that occurs in the Netherlands that doesn't occur for any language in the UK. An example is that there is substantial amount of TV programming is in English, with very limited dubbing (subbing instead.) At some times up to half the channels can be showing English language programming (at least on the TVs I've played around with)

    My grandparents(of my mothers side)are Dutch but they have lived 15 years in England my mother was born in Birmingham, my father is native German just like his parents. And I'm born and raised in The Netherlands and speak all three languages quitte good in reading, writing and speech. But in general if i have to choose which language feels for me more as a native language then I rather choose English. Dutch at the other hand is my second native language.

    Hi Laurie, I think you're doing great! I'm a Dutch native living in North England and local people can usually tell I'm not quite from their area, yet they can't place where my accent comes from. To me that is a giant compliment as they don't think I'm foreign :D

    I have found that most foreigners who learn English sound English because they learn English.
    I know that sounds a bit weird, but it means that they are taught "proper" English, not the English "common tongue". As a result, many foreigners speak English _better_ than English and sound more English people do. Americans do not sound English because they do not learn English, they learn American English, which has different (and really stupid) rules when it comes to spelling and pronunciation.
    Fun fact: In Britain, the local accent (and slang) changes noticeably every (approx) 25 miles and, as a result, two towns/cities that are 15-20 miles apart can have accents that are completely different, not just slight variations of each other - often to the point that they have difficulty understanding each other.

    • @JC-nn4if
      @JC-nn4if 3 роки тому

      British english also have very stupid pronunciacion and spelling rules. In fact, i wouldn't say they are stupid. I would say both the american and the british varieties have maybe too many exceptions to the rules in general . English is a highly irregular language, only that native speakers usually don't realize about that for obvious reasons.

  • @exsistentialis
    @exsistentialis 6 років тому

    I'm starting to get English sounds at 28 years old, before it I was only focusing in vocabulary, etc. I don't really think that foreigners can't really get sounds of other language at all, they'll probably have more trouble, but they also still can get them with willingness and practice, I practice the whole day speaking/thinking even alone; I don't live in Britain but I still make everything possible to get used to the many ways of speaking English in Britain, as I don't consider the American accent difficult at all. But great video! I'm loving your channel, you are incredible. Thanks for sharing your experiences and knowledge with us!

    Your accent is not forced, it's acquired and sounds purely British :) Which UK university are you attending? Is it in the southern England? (Just out of curiosity) I've studied in Reading for a year but that time was only enough to acquire a slight British accent, however, thankfully, watching the BBC news and some TV programs every day, made a huge difference.

    Interesting point about you attributing your English accent to the malleability of your original accent. I'm from the furthers south-eastern corner of NL myself, live in Essex for some time now, and most people don't believe me when I tell them I'm not British. The really funny thing is that around 7 years ago, while visiting some of the same shops I do nowadays, I would mistakenly get identified as Canadian due to the accent I had at the time, but no-one's ever gone: "Ah-ha, I hear from your accent you're Dutch",,.

Of the geographical location, thought that you just adapt to that accent and pick it up as you grow. Didn't know that you have to take courses later thereafter. But, it turned out beautifully as every word is fine to my understanding… It more than good. Thanks for sharing, Laurie, you're the best. Gonna good wurk on that accent... I'm Brazilian, is very normal to people here to learn English in an American accent. But that, for me, was very hard. The movements of the lip muscles, of the face, of the tongue, the intonation, basically everything sounded and felt so strange and artificial, not fluid. Then I started to pay more attention to the way Brits sounded, it was so fluid and easy to mimic, so I begin to imitate. It was easier and refreshing. Now I speak English with a very mild RP with traces of my native Brazilian accent. I really prefer to speak that way, I feel if I really sound like a Brit it'd break my identity.

    The platitude is "good butter and good cheese make good English and good Friese," but there are enough differences there that no one should discount the enormous lot of hard work that went into your English sounding so effortless and natural.

    Yes. You got a tiny Scottish accent every now and then too. For example the "on" as you say it at 4:55. ;)

    I've been thinking about what you said about having a soft Dutch accent.
    That makes sense actually; I've had similar experiences and I'm from as far south as you can go ;)
    I don't think your accent is forced, nor do I hear that you're Dutch or Scottish.

    I sound british too when speaking english. I had that when I was young. Don't know how I got the accent. My parents are both dutch. So I didn't get the accent from them. I haven't studied in the UK and in the 70's and 80's we didn't have internet. And the game consoles and internet just came late 80's begin 90's.

    Interesting video, I like your accent, it's British without being too British if you see what I mean. There is just a hint of another accent in there but if I didn't know you were Dutch I would struggle to place it. However it gives your voice an extra intonation and makes it definitely you, RP is somewhat dull so that extra bit sets your accent off nicely.

    Hi! Now it's my first year in a linguistic institute, and I study to be a teacher of foreign languages as well (English and Spanish) (I'm Russian myself). I've got a question for you: when you started you first year at the university, did you revise all the grammar topics you had already learnt at school? Or did you start from learning how to teach from the first year? Since we Russians aren't generally as good at English as you the Dutch are, we are still revising all the grammar which I studied at school and at some extra-corricular language schools which I had been attending for 5 years before I went to the University, and we even learn how to speak. I wouldn't say I'm perfect at English, I still have mistakes, I might be sluggish while speaking and stuff, but anyway, I thought that it all will be different at the University. And did you have native English speakers as your teachers or only the Dutch? In my case, all our teachers are Russian, but sometimes some native English speakers (teachers or exchange students) might pop into our institute.
    P.S. En ja, ik spreek ook een beetje Nederlands. Ik denk dat het een leuke taal is, als Duits die ik op school ook geleert heb, maar een beetje anders en bijzoender :)

    • @LaurieRobyn
      @LaurieRobyn  6 років тому

      I did repeat grammar rules as well as learn how to teach it too (kind of simultaneously). We started off at the start and then moved on to more difficult topics as we went along. We had separate classes for us practising grammar ourselves and actually practising teaching the topics, but it was done during the same period (if that makes sense).
      We had mostly Dutch teachers and one native English speaker - although all of them always spoke in English in class.
      Hope this helps! X

    My parents are Dutch they moved to America, but by the time I was born they decided to just speak English at home so we wouldn't have a hard time in school. I really want to learn Dutch so I can communicate with other family members and know my native language! Do you have any tips?

    Well, picking an accent and a second language is easy for musicians and those that are musically incline cause we approach hearing and executing sounds differently.

    I had that comment as well with my accent, most people were confused where I was from 😂 as it “sounds british” but they know it isn’t. While some family/friends think it is forced, as they all have more ‘american’ accents. I absolutely do not force it, it is because I had an internship and eventually lived in the UK, you learn the best in the country they speak the language🤗 And you pick up the way people pronounce words, you learn new words and pronounce it as you learned it - if that makes sense??😂

    You have no Scottish influences in your accent! I'm English, studied French and German at university and did Erasmus. Your accent is absolutely phenomenal. People who speak a foreign language as well as your are extremely rare :) Are you musical?! My theory is that people with a musical ear pick up accents better... Absolutely amazing!

    I am learning Dutch and I went on Erasmus to Flanders. I was kinda forced myself to get the Flamish accent, since I like it a little bit more and it is also easier for me, because has some similar sounds to my native language. And I got a lot of comments (funnyly enough mostly from Limburgers), that I was not learning the “right Dutch”. It was so funny because I also had to choose between two pronunciations but I felt like I offended the other group. Do you have any similar experiences?

    • @LaurieRobyn
      @LaurieRobyn  6 років тому

      Hmm no not really actually! More so now from people that think it's weird I have a more English accent instead of a Dutch accent. I do get made fun of for having a southern accent in Dutch though. :)

      Limburgs is funny, but it is nothing compared to either West-Vlaams or Poldernederlands :D Dutch accent in English is not really markable or easily recognizable anyway, as Russian for example.
