Ingredients for this Cuban-Inspired Yuca Recipe
YUCA (about 1 lb.)
1 Lg ONION (diced)
5-10 cloves GARLIC (finely chopped)
OIL for sauteing the onion and garlic
RED PEPPER FLAKES to taste
2-3 Tbsp CUMIN
½ cup OLIVE OIL
juice of 1 LEMON and zest
SALT to taste
CUMIN SEEDS (1 tsp, optional)
…I’ve got lots of yuca, so in the video I’m doubling this recipe
How To Cook Yuca Recipe
Using a sharp knife, cut the yuca into manageable sizes and carefully cut away the outer skin of the yuca root. The skin is inedible and should be discarded.
Place yuca pieces into a pot of water and bring to a boil. Yuca should never be eaten uncooked.
Reduce heat and simmer 15-20 minutes or until yuca root can be pierced easily with a fork. Do not overcook!
Yuca pieces should not be mushy. Drain yuca and cool with water.
Remove fibrous stem from center of root and cut into 1 inch chunks.
Heat oil in a skillet.
Add garlic and onion and let simmer for a several minutes.
Add red pepper flakes, cumin, and salt to taste.
Add yuca.
Mix and allow all to simmer for 5 minutes. Give the yuca an occasional stir. Add a bit of water if needed, but not too much.
Remove from heat and add lemon juice and zest.
And that's it!
Yucca is an excellent substitute for potato. It goes great with any meat entree, and makes a great vegetarian meal when paired with stuffed peppers and a crisp green salad.
Give this yuca recipe a try and let me know what you think, and bon appetit!
And if you wanna try out the stuffed peppers with yuca, check out this jalapeno poppers recipe as well

I just harvested my first yucca tree yesterday and I can not even believe how much there was!!
I gave half of my harvest away because there was no way I’d ever eat it all.
Anyway, very excited mine is boiling right now. My first time
I'll have to do this! People say when you try something new that you add years to your life! Thanks to you both!
I hope that's true :^)
I grew up eating boiling yucca, after removing it from the water it was added nice amount of roasted onion , with either cheese, eggs , salami, jam, cod fish, meat, etc,. Also we peel it very differently; we add salt to the boiling water , so when it is tender does not need more salt.
Cassava is underrated, it’s the most delicious yummiest root crop and u can eat it even if just boiled it ,or substitute for ur rice.
I dont see the appeal noticing you are taking a risk by eating it all the time.
Whats the risk?
@@greg3498 maybe it's about the high calorie content of yuca and some anti nutrient.....it contains good fiber for gut but by processing it lessen the fiber....by heat vit c lessen already .minerals very minimal so its says when I read some nutritional value of yuca. But cooking it different way as vegetable or dessert the taste will be 👍.
Yes,it's so delicious. We boil, fry and make cakes out of cassava in Jamaica. One of my favourite root crops for sure.
better than french fries
I am Nigerian and I enjoyed watching this video, we use cassava in different ways except this one, so today I tried this method and added some Nigerian spice and fish, oh my God it was unbelievably delicious, this is my new favorite food and I can't wait for my friends to try it out. Thanks Thanks!!!
orimolade ann well done sis
OA,
Did you cook the fish separately? I'm from Kenya and the good thing about this recipe is that you can use whatever spices you want. I think a major part of using this recipe is knowing how long you need to boil the yuca. I just cooked this recipe for the first time today (very early in the morning). So I'll get to taste it during lunch or dinner (depending on when I get time). That's when I'll really know how it works for me. I'm going to be eating the yuca with a beans, peas, potato and beef stew which I cooked separately. Normally, I would eat this stew with ugali, an East African maize meal staple (if you google "ugali" there are numerous links that show you how to cook it). Ugali is a starch that is eaten with all kinds of dishes in Kenya and neighboring countries. If this yuca recipe works I'll be really excited for I'll have an alternate way of eating so many dishes that I cook.
Recipe please 😁
I’m American born Haitian and I never appreciated this vegetable until I became a full blown adult. It sits well and is a great alternative for Rice.. I’m now growing some in my backyard 😊
I enjoyed your video on yuca or cassava or tapioca as it is called in the South Pacific. I'm from Fiji and it is a staple food consumed daily. It is mostly boiled like you did and eaten with vegetables or meat and fish. It can be cooked in an earth oven, fried as some viewers mentioned, with spices like potato wedges or curried as is done in our Indian community. It can also be grated and cooked then made into a desert with coconut milk or it can be grated and Cooke as porridge with milk added or coconut milk. What we do here is put a stone in a wood fire and when it is re
Can you please add the missing ending to your sentence? And you do consume this daily?
Try to cook with coconut milk. Just boil the cassava and fresh coconut milk and add salt. Very tasty🤗😋😚
I'll try that.
And add some urine from a human female just a little sprinkle .
I'm going to have to do this tonight!
Thx I want to try it but not know how to use
Do I need to boil in water before coconut milk??? Or straight boil in coconut milk?
Looks good!!! I’m trying it this weekend. Thanks for sharing!
Looks great! And so does your kitchen. I love trying out new root veggies from the grocery and nearly always find a Caribbean recipe for em. Can't wait to try yours soon. Thanks for making your recipe vegan too!
Boom, just seen this in a shop in my small town for the first time, I can not wait to try your recipe, Boom,Boom.
Man after my own heart: lots of onions, garlic and cumin. Why didn't I think of that? Gonna try this next time as well as the suggestion to cook it in coconut milk. Great job!
Dug a huge cassava tuber out of my garden yesterday, and going to try your recipe tonight. First time Ive ever grown cassava. Looking forward to it. Thankyou.
My husband was making a pasta dish the other day, and he told me he put in a Chef Buck amount of garlic! We love you and CG. Thanks for the videos!
if I make a dish and don't use a whole bulb of garlic, it feels weird :^)
Thank you. Love the yucca you prepared that I can even taste and smell it!
Can't wait to try this! I so appreciate the variety of recipes on your channel Chef Buck and Camera Girl!
we love to shop for groceries at international markets, so we're always running into new things to try
Wooow😱😱😱😱!!!! This looks 😋 delicious definitely would try this recipe tomorrow. .. Thank you so much for sharing 👍👍👍👍👍
Cassava we enjoy with slighty salted fresh coconut with "onion sambol", put in the mortar onions 🌰 chilli flakes or fresh/dried whole chillies 🌶 as you wish with salt & lime drops now chop chop chop until it's well blended we also add dried fish 🐟 called "malidifish", this is very famous in Maldives 🇲🇻, check the flavour as u wish ... mmmm... sure you gonna adore it.. "Lunu miris or Katte sambol", we call it in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 ♥
Oh my, yum, yum. That looks so good and I am sure it's tasty as well. My mouth is watering!!
Absolutely delicious!! 1st time I had it in my life. I always seen this veg in the market I was wondering what to do with it.
Super Duper looking recipe! I'm cooking my first ever cassava root today and it will by your recipe!
Thank you Buck for showing how to cook yuca/cassava. I bought a root of yuca today for the first time, and will try to see how it goes!
I cooked my first cassava tonight, lovely 🏴
I love how you don't give an over the top and lengthy intro, or over explain each step as I have seen in other videos. This is awesome! Straight to the point and easy to follow. Thanks!
I am watching this as I am eating some, only boiled in salt water!! But will try your recipe!! This root is sooooo yum!!! And so filling..
I am eating this on the side with pan fried salmon and kale cooked in butter!!! So happy right now!!!
OMG, when you responded to the "do a little dance" comment with "then I'd have to make a little love and get down tonight...sounds like a lotta work to me", I almost choked on my tea. You are really entertaining!
yeah...I was dating myself there
@@ChefBuckRecipes 🤣
Hahahha ikr
I loved that comment 😂😂
That’s from a song from KC and the sunshine band called get down tonight
Thank you! I fell in love with yuca when I was in Cuba, and had to buy it when I saw it on sale here.
Now I know how to cook it!
Well, with all the positive comments, I am definitely going to try yucca. I'll start a simplier dish. Hold the cumin til later. I so appreciate your simplified form of cooking in a modest kitchen. You prove we can prepare, cook, eat in modest surroundings. You are teaching an old dog new tricks. I dont have a CG, but I'll manage. A gal at church just lost lots of weight and recommended yucca, aloe and simple ancient foods she is using. Our forefathers were never fat. I'm looking forward to this new adventure in my old 79 year old body. Again, thanks for your commen sense basic recipes. Looks like fun!
Nothing better than the sound of a cold stovetop first starting up. Brings back some good memories.
I just bought some today. Thank you for this I will subscribe. Hope everyone having a blessed day and many more!!!💯🥰☺️
Very helpful video - many thanks! I'm off to cook some cassava
I love yuca!! I will be cooking this real soon.
I appreciate you sharing this wonderful recipe 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏. I will cook this soon👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Yummy👍 Yes Please😋👏🙋 Love Yuca. My Cuban BFF turned me on to it over 30 yrs ago
Thank you for sharing ^^ I made this and It tasted good to me.
I definitely try that out , looks yummy 😋
Great introduction to Yucca and how to prepare them.
I used to eat this in Brazil. it's delicious!
So did you quit eating it?
Looks great, thanks for sharing!
Blessings!! Will do this tonight with my family.
I love Yuca! Great recipe!
Cooking and then frying, looks very good as well.
Thank you for explaining and demonstrating the best method for removal of the interior stem. Others do not.
never tried it this way Chef. Thanks for sharing. In Malaysia we boil it and eat with coconut sambal !! Yumm
Hi, I’m from Brazil and I’ve been eating this since I was a kid. Love your video ❤ I also recommend boiling it and adding some butter, salt and pepper, or, after boiling just deep fry it like french fries , it’s delicious!
Excellent recipe I did as you said, and it is very very delicious. In the first part, it took 25 minutes to cook the Yuca in hot water.
You are so good at this. Fun to watch.
I love these! Have you ever tried them being gently boiled in smaller chunks in coconut milk with water, pinch of salt, a little coconut sugar (or ur choice of sweetener)& a bit of cinnamon? These are so versatile. Yummy.
Ooooh, Thanks I'm going to try that!
That sounds delicious thank you
What is it with Americans and sugar. Must you add that toxin to everything in your diet?
It's a lot like a potato, do you add sugar to your potatoes?
It looks delicious, thanks Chef Buck and Camera Girl. I've never had that dish and now want to try it. Best regards.
we used to eat this quite often in Florida...good yuca was plentiful...I don't have a problem finding it, but sometimes it's not so great up here around seattle...it's not such a popular in the northwest, and yuca tends to sit at the grocery store and get old
I am going to try this savoury dish - yummy! Over here in Malaysia, we make a sweet cake with coconut milk, sugar, steamed and baked to brown it. During WW2, it was a staple food for the people when food was scarce. Just boiled and eaten.
Just did this and i want more, amazing!Thank you :)
I love cassava so much!
Definitely want to try this
Awesome! thank you Chef Buck! ;D
I just clicked because I wanted to confirm I was pronouncing Yuca correctly. But, I couldn't stop watching video it was so interesting and moved along fast enough for my short attention span. HA!
I followed the recipe and it came out good. I will cook it again. I never knew how to cook yuca before. I wonder how to use my programmable pressure cooker next time.
That looks great, i'll be trying this soon tomorrow.
we do eat cassava raw with coconut or with salt lemon juice and powdered pepper in my country sometimes we fry, boil or cooked with coconut juice. With coconut you can use salt or sugar and vanilla essences or with cardamom for good aroma. We use leaves as vegetable and it sticks as fire for cooking
cassava and coconut sounds so tasty!
Its my favourite food item... thanks bro...
Hi there! i did not know that you can fried it, here in south africa we just peel it and cut into pieces and put into the pot with water and salt and boiled it after cooked we dish, thanks for the receip.God bless you for sharing with us.
This wonderful piece of video viewing as I eating right now in my room since I am Vegan like it non grease.
You make it very similar to me but I don't add onions and not pepper. I add only garlic, cumin and curry. Also I cut the yuca in "french fries" shape to fry it. And I love how tasty it is with the garlic, cumin and curry (and salt obviously too don't forget salt).
This was great! Just got some Cassava cuttings from eBay. Plan to grow them this summer. Gonna try this recipe!
GrowEverything, where do you live, that you can grow yuca?
It looks very testy yummy mouth-watering hehe
Looks yummy, you can make yuca balls and dip in some chutney. Love this recipe😇
Wow!!!! look so yummy! Thanks so much.
I learned of Cassava or Yucca in South America and found it be very healthy root and delicious food. Thanks for sharing!❤
I love it...we usually prepare yuca as we do in this video, but I find plain yuca with a bit of salt and citrus to be wonderful
Yum!❤
Monica T. Curenton : You should have been on a different channel whether there was a raging. " yuca -yucca" discussion among a gang of howling u-tubers. When I first moved to Colombia, I thought 'Yuca ' was just the Spanish pronounciation of 'yucca' until I learned that they are 2 entirely different plants. People in both cultures constantly confuse the two.
Carol Lopez thank you one is the spiked plant and the other is the root. Teach me please
Monica T. Curenton ; the root of yuCCa is used as soap or even shampoo, as my mother did when we were out camping. It takes a really ambitious and determined person to get past those sharp spikes of the Spanish Bayonet variety and get at those roots. I don't think the yuca root can be used to wash hair, do you? Bob Hansler's Channel has some great stuff about YuCCa, how to pick and eat, etc. The flowers, not the root. you'll enjoy it, I know. Meanwhile I love Chef Bucks recipe on Yuca.
can't wait to try it
Salt, pepper, onions, sautee it with some ham or bacon and top with some scallions! Delish
L Sounds delicious, the way you would cook it! 👍👍
that's not a stem ,hahaha
NO PORK!
Don't eat pork make some bacalao,❤💪
In srilankan cooking we boil with peeled butter squash and add fried onions ,garlic ,salt and red Chile flakes and coconut milk. Its yummy 🤤
Loved this video!
I love yuca we make it fried or it's good in soups it's a good in salds like Potato salad we make sweet dish out it to yuca cake is delicious hello from Honduras
DWIGHT MANN DO YOU HAVE A REALLY GOOD RECIPE FOR MUFUNGO ?😘😘😘
I love Yuca. It has what i would describe as a waxy potato texture. it draws flavors so well I like to make it the traditional Cuban way and put a garlic olive oil butter sauce over it. thank you for your video. i will have to try it like this. have you tried taro? it has a very roasted corn smell and is another good starch. it also needs to be cooked well.
Just cooked casava today.
In Malaysia casava is called tapioca..
Love from Malaysia😍
in my home province antique, philippines we call it patioca. .in other native dialects it is called balinghoy or kamoteng kahoy. .
The amount of that cumin can kill a whole city with the smell 😲🤭
Cumin can smell/taste really good until someone ruins the mood and mentions something else it smells like *looks at my aunt*
I love your videos. Can you please do more low carb recipes, thanks.
The way I cook it I fry some onion in virgin olive oil until it soften put garlic powder or mashed garlic put some olive a little bit of salt then I pour it all on the casava mix it well if dry you can add more of the virgin olive oil it taste great
beautiful, i love boild cassavas
one of the things I miss from when I lived in the south was the plentiful yuca...I can find yuca up here in the Northwest, but sometimes it's way past it's prime, not as popular up in this part of the country, so sometimes it sits on the shelf for a while
Thanks for the video now I'm hungry. I'm from the island of Tonga and peel n boil til tender pour remaining water out of the pot..pour coconut cream over the Manioke (cassava) bring to boil...done. enjoy it with a nice roast pig, fish etc. or best yet BB-Q teriyaki chicken
Thank you 🥔 So delicious 😋🔥🔥🔥
Yucca/Cassava? That's new to me... Thanks a lot, Buck! I actually learned something today!
it's a pretty popular ingredient and easy to find, although I generally buy smaller sizes of yuca than I used in this video...the yuca I used here was probably the biggest I've ever bought-- looked like a bin full of caveman clubs at the grocery store
ah, Very interesting! They can definitely make for some lethal weapons by the looks of it! xD
I really like this
Feel like I can smell that... Delicious 👌
Wow, lovely
Very informative
Thanks for right recipe 🙏😊
Super
Omigosh you guys!!! I went to the food bank today and they had a huge stock of Yuca (what the heck is Yuca???) lol so I got 3 of them, came home, found this channel and I just make this recipe, and used the lemon zest I ALSO got there today, YAY and it is so delish!!! Oh goodness gracious it is so good!! Lots of sauteed garlic, onion and fennel, and the lemon zest and pepper flakes it is totally GOURMET.
*Thank you Chef Buck and CG for this super simple and super delish recipe. And of course...the instructions on prepping the Yuca!!* Liked and subbed!! :D
We make dumpling with it and brown stew pork
Where was this food bank in the usa
love you guys. I have been watching your videos for awhile now. I would love to see your version of how you cook Jicama or Kohlrabi. Take care Chef Buck
kohlrabi...I've never bought one--don't think I've ever had it...I'll keep my eye out for it and give it a try. We often use jicama raw in salads as a side for fish or when we're on a vegetarian streak...we often make a variation of this salad (lately I've been using raw zucchini in salads) ua-cam.com/video/4JvtqzxzqPU/v-deo.html
maybe I'll buy a kohlrabi and give that a go...we like to bake root veggies for a faux french fry fix, too
Give the Kohlrabi a shot Buck they are very good for you...Lots of vitamins and minerals
I've been eating salmon fillets mostly like this lately ua-cam.com/video/D2Z5KlT7pwM/v-deo.html
Thanks for the video
So delicious
...peeps this is where tapioca pudding comes from.
Yellow Tapioca are my favorite
Great video!
Wow, that looks delicious! Can I use frozen yuca to make this too?
Good reflexes on catching that rollaway piece of yucca.
I have never tried it, I've never even seen it in a store, it looks delicious though!
I'm surprised how many places have fresh yuca...sometimes if you can't find it in the fesh produce, you can find yuca already cut and peeled in the frozen foods section (look in the International foods frozen area with the egg rolls and tamales)...I used to always buy frozen yuca when I lived in North Florida, 'cause it was the best price where I shopped
yummy! thank you
Perfect so much ❤❤❤❤❤
Yucca con mojo is one of my favorite Cuban foods. None of that extra spice, just garlic and salt
Thank you for making this video so easy fun to understand.....I am giving a try to cook this now
I may have to try this 🤔
The way he peeled cassava 😀😀😀😀😀😀 lol. It was like sugarcane
