11:30 this is what the warriors discovered before everyone else. While the Warriors dynasty is know for their 3s and "changing the game", they didn't go overboard like other teams started to. In those years, there were other teams that caught on to the "3 point avalanche" meta who shot more 3s than the warriors. The difference was that the Warriors didnt actually over compensate. They didnt shoot the most 3s those seasons when they won. They still shot a lot in the mid range and had curry in p&r and back door actions for other players because of the space 3s opened up.

These people aren’t ready for that conversation. Even the teams that were shooting MORE than them were trying to do the same thing. That’s the thing about the 3pt game is that it spreads the floor and allows for a more complex offense that is harder to defend because of the spacing AND the Multiple 3pt Marksmen keeping the defense honest. You can’t cheat too much one way because you’ll get burnt on the back door, can’t cheat too much the other way because they’ll shoot your eyes out.
But people just want to simplify it by saying “tHeY sHoOtInG tOo mAnY 3s n rUiNiNg tHe gAMe N nEvEr cAlL tRaVeLs”
Like people weren’t saying the same thing 30 years ago “NBA refs never call Jordan for traveling! They’re ruining the game!” and 25 years ago they said “NBA refs never call Iverson for carrying! They’re ruining the game!” There’s always been goobers who don’t really understand the rules or the nuances of the game because they never really played REAL basketball before. MOST people couldn’t even make their high school squad. Junior Varsity. It’s just part of basketball, listening to these goofballs. 😂😂

The thing that made the difference for GSW vs the rest of the league is they had Steph, Klay, Durant, those are 3 All-Time great shooters, no other team in the league had that caliber of personnel from a jump-shooting standpoint, all 3 are top tier shot makers, 2 are All-Time shot creators, and the other heats up faster than almost everyone in league history. That's peculiar personnel, the rest of the league tried to mimic that without that same personnel thus we have 3s out of control now because everyone is still chasing that Steph/Klay/Durant high that can't be replicated. It's sad to watch.

Back in the day, I figured out how to consistently hit 3s in NBA Live and i just played like that whenever my friends came over. I would smoke them every time because i was just making 3 after 3. But I was always under the impression that yeah this is why videogames are videogames and real life is real life. There's no way you can sustain that style of play over an 82 game season plus the playoffs. It was silly videogame shit. That is what's so mindblowing about Steph Curry and the subsequent 3 point revolution. It took what was essentially a videogame strategy and made it viable. Not just viable but the norm. 'Defense wins championships' still rings true, but 3s are what get you over the hump now. Whether or not that's a good thing remains to be seen but it doesn't get spoken of enough how truly transcendent Steph Curry is and continues to be. What he and the Warriors started in 2015 should've never happened. It was unfathomable back in the day. They completely redefined convention within the game of basketball and I dont think there's any other player who can lay claim to that distinction. Jordan is forever the goat. Kobe was an icon. Lebron continues to defy father time. But none of them can say that they altered the very fabric of the game they played. Only Steph. That's a Goat case if I ever did see one

Have Wade bring the ball up and if he didn’t have an easy lane to the basket and if Shaq was covered, swing, swing, swing and find Damon Jones in the corner for 3. Worked every time. Wade would be my leading scorer and Jones would be right behind him. It used to drive my brother crazy because it was DAMON JONES killing him every time. 3 is just more than 2, and as long as you stay over 34% it’s not hurting you. 50% from 2 yields the same results. About ten or twelve years ago, there was some college basketball team that broke records for points scored. They had one designated shooter whose only job was to chuck three pointers. Every other player on the team would just play full court pressure defense. Their whole game plan was to either steal the ball in backcourt, contest any opposing three pointer and let the other team get a layup if they wanted it, so they could get the ball back as quickly as possible and get their designated shooter in a position to put up a 3. They ran their entire roster, played all 15 players on that all game full court press, and their designated shooter ended up breaking records scoring like a hundred points in a game. I've wondered for years now if an NBA team might adopt that crazy strategy...and now we see the warriors of this season going 12 deep to play super intense defense with fresh legs... sure has me wondering...

    • @09lowkey
      @09lowkey 9 годин тому

I was thinking of something like that. Just set a cap on how many points can be scored by 3pt'ers. If anything make it a rule for the In-Season Tournament games, try it out see how it works, or try it for the All-Star game. I remember back in the day depending on where you went to hoop they would play "All 1s" meaning every bucket counted as 1 pt. You play to 11 or 13, win by 2 or first to 15. So that way 3s were only valuable for those who could make them. An open shooter is still an open shooter, but that open corner 3 is no more valuable than any other more traditional way of scoring. Kept the game fresh, everyone could play their game and everyone could bring something valuable.

Then the next season him,Klay,Dray & co made the league in a new dimension with their 3s. KDs move to the warriors was shocking. But in some ways i can understand why he moved there. Maybe BUT a few things. Now that the entire team is taking 3's it means any single player isn't really taking anymore than Curry took in his record breaking year. Also, Harden proved shooting a lot does not mean making a lot. He attempted way more than Curry for several years and never got close to his record. Curry took 11 per game at a 45% efficiency, which is insane for an entire season. All 3 guys attempting more than 10 a game this year (Lamelo, Tatum, Ant) are all way below 45% already after only 10 games and even with Ants VERY hot start which will likely not last he is already well below 45%.
SO maybe its breakable sooner than we thought, but I would not underestimate how insane that season was for Curry. You have to average 5 makes a game for all 82 games of the entire season. The only way someone breaks it soon is likely by missing A LOT.

This was fun when the warriors were doing it and it was new and exciting. Not to mention that Steph and Klay are two of the best shooters of all time. Now that literally the entire league shoots more threes than they did during their heyday makes the product significantly worse. If it weren't for the incredible talent of the players in the leauge right now, this stylistic uniformity would drive the ratings down even further. The NBA finals won't match the ratings for an NFL preseaon game at this rate.

You might say it's not good television or not pretty to watch teams chuck a bunch of threes but I have to disagree. My Chicago Bulls went from being one of the worse 3 point shooting teams last year to attempting the second most threes a game this season and I have to say I really enjoy watching the games, it requires a special level of ball movement to generate that many open looks and it is truly beautiful basketball. last year the bulls had a midrange heavy offence that was really stagnant; this year with all these three attempts the ball is flying all over the court, players are cutting at every opportunity, it's a much prettier game and I really do love it.

Jxmy this is great and all but you should make a video about these 3 point shooting teams and winning in the playoffs. For me, playoff basketball looks a lot different than regular season and I believe it's cause teams start looking at their matchups from a defensive standpoint also. They come up with different systems, they start utilizing their big men more, they use older methods like mid ranges and closer ranged shots more because the three ball is being defended well. Obviously the Celtics won in 2023, but Harden's rockets never won, the 2016 warriors didn't win, and it's because the teams lock in defensively come playoff time. I need a deeper analysis for volume three point shooting and the relationship with winning playoff teams

Great video, as always! I completely agree with your point about the league’s direction being clear. The remedies, on the other hand, seem relatively simple: eliminating the corner three and extending the three-point line. Of course, the challenge lies in determining exactly how far the line should be placed.
That said, I have one concern with the overall argument in the video: the idea that the current style of play makes for bad television. Ultimately, this is a commercial decision for the league, and I’m not entirely convinced that younger generations perceive it as poor entertainment or “bad television.” In fact, I think watching a James Harden step-back three or a Stephen Curry pull-up three is just as exciting and inspiring as watching an Anthony Edwards dunk.
Moreover, I would argue that the high volume of three-pointers adds a significant element of unpredictability to the game. The narrative of “no lead is safe” exists precisely because of high-volume shooting. For instance, a team on fire can hit consecutive threes and erase a 15- or even 20-point deficit in just a few minutes. This unpredictability only enhances the game’s spectacle.
Lastly, I think we need to consider the role of habit formation. Fans and players alike adapt to the style of play, and over time, it becomes the norm. Because of this, I’m not sure there’s a compelling need to change it, as it doesn’t feel unnatural or out of place, especially for the youngest generation within the current basketball culture.

The limit will be completely disregarding defense and getting the 5 fastest guys u can find to get to those open spots on the court (yes even if it's 5 point guards. Okc to me rn with all their bigs down, is running the closest we will see to that future). A lot of zoning and pressing to force turnovers into a quick transition 3 that doesn't let the defense set up. Any team who does this will freely give up a 2 inside just to quickly bring the ball back up and shoot a 3. It's interesting, because there could be a future where not only 1 guy breaks wilt's 100 pt record.... but multiple. Easily could be a ridiculous hot hand (as we can all assume and ppl predict would take to make 100), but a team freely giving a player/center 100% shooting in the paint 2's that helps such player reach 100, just so they can get more 3's up on the other side.

All of a sudden that 0.02% chance of making the nba if u are under 6 ft tall... probably drastically changes. Hoping I'm alive to at least see a team try this uber fast d'antoni peak offense and making any player out there no matter the size, height, or weight believe there is a real chance for em. Just like wemby and chet are doing for 7 ft+ players that many thought would just go extinct.
