I actually liked his style of play when he was 12 and 13: he played aggressively and sacrificed pieces. Now his play is more positional and not as fun.
DarkNinja24 I wouldn't really call it a trap, it's a sacrifice, unlike most traps, sacrifices when not accepted usually lead to a bad position for the opponent while traps when not accepted usually just end up in a normal game or even a bad position for you
FYI 12...NC6 is absolutely playable. 13.d5 is not a refutation because closing the center can turn into black's advandtage if they can, after preparation including g6, Nf6->e8->g6, play a favourable f5.
Awesome! To be fair though, the sequence after taking the queen - a sure shot checkmate should have been seen by the opponent, but if he had not taken the queen, then white would have been in too strong a position, and would have won eventually. Opening up the diagonal via pawn sacrifice was really cool :)
You know, I always click to watch Magnus and end up on these long winded discussions. On the one hand I'm appreciative of the explanation but on the other I'm disappointing that there's no Magnus.
I used to suck at chess then I read the complete chess course by Fred Renfield and then I was instantly super good after it. No joke. A super good chess book will turn a noob into a super player.
I used to be a noob, when playing chess with my friend they always suck for waiting for me to move a piece for 5 minit per piece and always losing. But now it different I winning the game.
George Bush if you mean at the end, sometimes if it is a beautiful mate, strong players will "allow the mate" instead of resigning. It is a show of respect.
What they said was pretty clear, I thought. If they know they're going to get checkmated but if it's a beautiful mate, they allow themselves to be mated out of respect.
carlsson fully utilizes the queen to ultimately sacrifice for the clear diagonal block while Blake thinks he has the upper hand by taking the queen, Blake underestimated the 12 year old by not acknowledging the motives behind the queen sacrifice...amazing
1:13 Nc6 was the beginning of the end. For a 2K+ player, that was a crazy bad move, not only hurting game balance but setting himself in defense mode, which costed him a momentum of white attack... and then 1 more move behind, 1:32 Ra7, being 2 moves behind, a perfect situation for pieces sacrifice and endless attack
Carlsen’s moves: 1. QxNch!, PxQ (if 1...KB1, 2. QN8 mate; and if 1...KR1, 2. NB7 mate); 2. R-B7 ch, now: if either 2...KR1 or 2...KxN, White mates with 3. RxP.
Hey Magnus can you please tell me since when you knew it was going to be checkmate? From the knight sacrifice or before? I didn't see the checkmate even after the last move of the game
4:46 "If King H8, Bishop takes G5, if black pawn takes g5, Queen g3 to attack e5 pawn" But why is it strong? Black can simply Bishop on D6. Where is the trouble now?
Beautiful! The first thing I saw was the Queen sac but saw that after Rook to F7 the knight on H6 was lost and I dismissed it... So close! If only I was as smart at 40 as a 12 YO Magnus Carlsen...
sick game, commentary isn't that great.... go through the moves way too fast making it hard to appreciate the move by move decisions he's making. Slow it down a bit and let us see his reasoning behind each move.
I'm super excited! I'm getting better at chess! just a few weeks ago I'd never beaten my brother at chess and I just now beat him my third time! at the end of the game, he had two pawns a rook and a queen and I had just two rooks.
and here i am losing to the computer level 2 on Chess com, guess I'm learning because i was on level 1. Would be great to even get to a quarter of these guys' skill.

Black can take the pawn by playing Nxe4. But white will win the pawn back after Rook to e1 and when black Knight moves, white capture pawn by playing Nxe5
I think Black player made a huge mistake and could easily win the game after the queen sacrifice if he can see this. If he doesnt take the Knight on H6 when he got checked by the rook on F7 but instead retreats to H8 square things could've been quite different because then the queen have open attack position on the Knight on H6 and it is defended by the pawn on G5. Yea Hans didnt see that coming. Very risky play by Carlsen, he was too good at mind control XD
can any one explain is it possible to save the game for black if he would have played Kh8 instead of capturing knight at the end ? after that Qh6 may be the better continuation!
Ramasamy Manoharan no, the next move would still be checkmate. Rook would still take h7. Then the Knight would be covering G8, and the rook would be covering G7
Shivam Goundar white Would play Rh7 check mate. With the knight covering the g8 square and the bishop the h7 square Incase king takes the rook h7. Beautiful checkmate indeed.
12 years old and 2385 rating. When I was 12... I was just 12.
can you pls help me how to get points

Wow, queen sacrifices are impressive
It didn't seem as much sacrifice given the fact that it was just a prelude to check mate
sham sacrifice
vertigoz ... that is what a sacrifice is though... you don't just give away pieces without going for a prelude checkmate. that's pretty much stupidity
Knot really.....eye always sacrifice or trick(think "Trick or Treat".....Searching for Bobby Fisher movie) all the time.....kids are clueless!
Hasan Tariq
You could give away pieces in order to force stalemate and draw.
Not only was this a strong match by Carlsen but also it is impressive how self-confident he was at that age. The queen sac was beautiful.
I actually liked his style of play when he was 12 and 13: he played aggressively and sacrificed pieces. Now his play is more positional and not as fun.
"If you think you are good at something, there's always an asian better than you" said Magnus Carlsen, never.
Sheer genius

Magnus is a viking
Shut up there's no asian europe or any Continent or any countries or any race involved here this is only for a playing chess, shut up idiot,

The queen sacrifise is amazing and the Chekmate is also amazing.
It's always nice 10 years later to look back at a game you lost to a 12 year old who became world champion.
Is it you Hans???
Oh no. It's not:) Just something I thought about watching this game. What a relief though losing to a 12 year old knowing he became world champ.
Carlsen is the man. Giving the Queen the flick for a winning move is all about style. There are always Pawns to promote in a backup plan.

Was it a blitz? A 22xx level should have seen he will be check mated at least at a classical game
If you mean after the queen took on g5, he responded with the best move.
Retreating the king instead of capturing the queen is just a quicker mate.
Yeah totally, game was already lost for Hans after Magnus went in for the queen sac.
Hard to foresee a queen sac
George Bush if you mean at the end, sometimes if it is a beautiful mate, strong players will "allow the mate" instead of resigning. It is a show of respect.

4:46 "If King H8, Bishop takes G5, if black pawn takes g5, Queen g3 to attack e5 pawn" But why is it strong? Black can simply Bishop on D6. Where is the trouble now?
If the Bishop goes to D6 you can capture with the queen on g5.

Your way of explaining is good
I think, the most beautiful check mate from Carlsen was at world championships 2016 against Karjakin ;)
That was blitz and Karyakin preview all coming, but just permitted it.
wow what an incredible checkmate.
Greatest queen sacrifice ever
Greatest checkmate ever
Greatest chess game ever
Imagined what Magnus' reaction would be like if black used his trap card and assassinates the white king.
Sorry if this seems stupid, but why doesn't black king move to H8 at the end instead of king takes knight?
no worries Daniel, again Rh7 is a checkmate
They should make a movie about this. Like pawn sacrifice, queen sacrifice
wow that was awesome tnx for sharing it
"...king takes h6 and rook takes h7, checkmate" wait what? "now do you see the importance of-" OH SHIT
One word: BALLS OF STEEL.
Just. Beautiful.
Very beautiful checkmate
Very very nice, Suren.
I'm super excited! I'm getting better at chess! just a few weeks ago I'd never beaten my brother at chess and I just now beat him my third time! at the end of the game, he had two pawns a rook and a queen and I had just two rooks.
No sacrifice, no victory.
WOWWWW. HE JUST SACRIFICED HIS QUEEN!
Suren, what is your rating?
Every move Was ready By Magnus Carlsen
Simply outstanding!
Both Qxg5 and Bxg5 moves reach the same result...he chose the former. Very well calculated.
Qxq5 is played with check and is forcing, Bxg5 doesn't win, black plays Nd3 for example
a beautiful check mate indeed
What program of chess is it?
and here i am losing to the computer level 2 on Chess com, guess I'm learning because i was on level 1. Would be great to even get to a quarter of these guys' skill.
I nailed the first 3 moves of Carlsen.... could never do the rest
Great sacrifice
Was the queen sacrifice a forced mate ? Or could black have played better ?
I don't think anyone who plays chess seriously loves chess. It's a game where if you suck, it is hard to understand why you suck, at times, and then, suddenly you're amazing... and gradually suck again at.

.. great
Although the Q sacrifice was the best move by far, would N to E5 also be a winning move?
Yeah, but Q sac is quite a bit faster.
Yeah, that's why I said the queen sac was the best move by far. duh
@5:19, why didn’t the king retreat to H8, instead of taking the Knight?
If black went KH8 then RH7 still mates, should’ve resigned
Check it yourself, dude
Magnus Carlsen is a genius
This checkmate gave me chills. If a 12 year old does it to me I would be angry anyway
Magnus will be the best ever
Wow it's a wonderful game at that age. He is a chess genius
How do they calculate rating?
black biggest mistake was at 3:40 he underestimated the kido and got his ass punished
Wow, 12 years old and 2300 rating? When I was 12... Wait, I'm still 11 years old...
and suren stands for surendra
so the prodigy is banking on his opponent not simply taking the rook.
in the variation where white plays Qg3, what if black responds with Bd6?
remember the old lost in space......Danger danger danger arms flailing
so satisfying to win by queen sacrifice
which country do you belong suren??
Question: Why doesn't Harestad take Knight x pawn early in the game?
Black can take the pawn by playing Nxe4. But white will win the pawn back after Rook to e1 and when black Knight moves, white capture pawn by playing Nxe5
@5:19 why not king h8 here?
If a good chess player sacrifices his queen you better expect a check mate after taking it.
If he moved king to H8 then rook to H7 is still checkmate on the very next move.
The hell is this kid on about
Are u also here after watching the queen's gambit?
If you could just show throughout that who is black and who is white, your videos are super awesome!
"Hello Sheks Laurence"

Ramasamy Manoharan no, the next move would still be checkmate. Rook would still take h7. Then the Knight would be covering G8, and the rook would be covering G7
incredible confidence wow! one tiny mistake and the game would have been over for him
in the beginning i thought that was a queens sacrifice
Pls continue after White Qg3 thanks :)
So I'm kind of confused, why couldn't the king go h8 at 5:18?
Shivam Goundar white Would play Rh7 check mate. With the knight covering the g8 square and the bishop the h7 square Incase king takes the rook h7. Beautiful checkmate indeed.
I see
When you analyse, some times, difficult to track moves made..
Why doesnt black take the E4 pawn at 0:36?
I’d be hella mad knowing the fact that he sacrificed a queen and I still lost
Pretty good player. Hope he will have succes when he gets older
My chess rating is 902 when I am only a kid!
If I got beat like that by a 12 year old I would probably quit the game forever
