Starlink interference: Astronomers complain of satellite light pollution

- Last month, Ukraine received help from aerospace CEO Elon Musk to provide satellite internet to the war-torn country.
But astronomers are complaining about light pollution, produced by communications satellites.
Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman reports from northern Chile where satellite interference has become a big problem.

Musk and his ego permanently changed the night sky. And never bothered to ask a single one of us which may have been opposed to it. In all of his funded capabilities you would have hoped he would have coated those things with a non reflective coating. Our night sky is ours, not his alone.
Exploring the scientific frontier reaps us benefits we never could or can foresee. History shows that these benefits are overwhelmingly beneficial to humanity. It is a shame that we cannot find a middle ground to provide internet to the globe without damaging one of our avenues to advance the scientific frontier.
The MuskRats are out in force in the comment section. They are the young Star Trek groupies who really think Musk is gonna populate Mars. Spoiler alert, he's not.
Tumble weeds Cynical Drinker. Men of action create, Men of inaction and failure criticize. :D
@@kalidesu let him go… I’m sure he want to be first on mars 😁
Oh oh ppl, we got the next billionaire who is going to change the world… a nobody.
You're a weirdo. Wanting low cost high speed satellite internet doesn't automatically make you a fan of elon musk.
Don't lump Star Trek fans into this. Plenty of them see Musk for the thinly-disguised Ferengi that he is.
STARLINK IS A PENTAGON MILITARY PROJECT
No is Elon musk space program to MARS
Im an astrophysics graduate. Im not a genius, but i have met geniuses. All of them say the same thing, Elon Musk is a smart guy pretending to be a genius by using and exploiting those under him who are the true geniuses. Anyone who has seen and heard Elon properly realises hes just a regular smart guy that just realised hes rich...
I don't understand
@@ardiansyar3978 basically what he is saying is that if u have the money it's easy to get smart people to do stuff for you
Well at least he’s making shizz possible, what are you doing?
That sounds a lot like Thomas Edison.......
@@kylesmith4572 Very apt comparison
The devil busy
if elon really cared about space then he wouldnt launch these starlinks
He never really talked about caring for space.. his pitch is humanity.
If we really cared about earth then we wouldn't build houses.
Obvious result, defines proverb of not being able to see the forrest because of the trees!
There's been mega tons of space junk floating above earth before Starlink.
Internet now or oxigen found light years away... let me think for a second xD
And their stars shall fall from heavan
True indeed god
It all will fall into pieces one day...Nothing last forever...
This is such a bad report lol. This is great for people and only a few old astronomer are complaining because their on earth telescopes see a few extra things in the sky
Jeff Bezos s Amazon or shall it be Blue Origin ?
I bet he is being paid by the competitors to trash talk starlink.
Gimme a break.
Internet that provide jobs, education, and for small businesses or you want a oxygen from 1000 year light ahead.
We would need better telescopes that can filter out interferences
Earth is flat 100%
Complete nonsense
@@albertayunda5521 He was making a joke....since visible rotating satellite chains like this make it obvious that the earth is round.
The satellites are only seens in the sky a couple days after they launch til they get in orbit
bet that's why scientist are complain, you sure got it Chief
@@ilnumeroperfetto696 Not saying they're invalid complaints but most of them have already been addressed.
LOL, astronomy as important as the internet? Nope. Plus with the reduced cost of launches into space thanks to SpaceX, it is even better to put radio-telescopes into space.
Crybabies.
get a normal voice robot
These complaining ground astronomers will soon be replaced by space astronomers. So they have a valid reason to panic
Elon put the telescope on top of the satellite 🔭 🛰️ 🌍 problem solved
Not every research team can afford that.
Elon just buy the moon 🌙 problem solved
save your argument, the anti-elon don't care much for solution, only spite against elon.
Elon musk has actually addressed this and has said he has a team organising programs to present live coordinates of the satellites that can automatically remove them from imaging, so that when a telescope looks at space and takes photos, the satellites are not present.
As for wave length interference, hopefully there is a solution already also being considered, that is - keeping in mind that SpaceX and Starlink are space faring organisations in their own right that observe the universe, now with the same hurdle and one they created themselves by launching their own satellites at low orbit presenting this problem, I'd wager through their own observation, they'd be aware of the problem and are likely working to solve for this problem if they're already in the process of something similar.
Elon is also aiming to put people on Mars by 2030 (at the latest according to Elon), he's not a chump.
Elon Musk will NOT put people on Mars by 2030, if at all.
Cheap affordable internet to EVERYONE on the planet is 100000000x more important and valuable than 0.01 of people that happen to be scientists and want to look at planets to see if there's water on those planets.
it's also monopolized internet for everyone. it's gonna be a blast when a whole country can be threatened by taking away their whole internet. remember when Facebook was doing it, but their satellite got blown up...by SpaceX lmao
You don’t need all those satellites in space to achieve that lol.
@@ilnumeroperfetto696 monopolize the internet? You wishing too much
@@ggefryg aren't entire zones of the usa bound to one ISP? it's really not that far fetched, i didn't mean for the whole world maybe that's the misunderstanding
@@ilnumeroperfetto696 There are multiple servers in the USA alone that connects the whole world via fiber optics and are run by different ISPs. Satellite is another avenue for internet connection. Starlink is not the only satellite ISP and even if they monopolize that space, it doesn't mean that will have full control of the internet.
Launch Muskkk up to them... THAT will dim them out real quick.
