The Night Ricky Hatton Humbled Malignaggi

- Welcome back to Boxing After Dark! In today's video, we revisit the thrilling year of 2008, where power collided with speed. Ricky Hatton, fresh off a significant knockout defeat against the legendary Floyd Mayweather, faced the formidable challenge of overcoming Paulie Malignaggi to reclaim his position at the pinnacle of the boxing world.
The best thing about Paulie Malignaggi is that he looks, acts, and talks exactly like someone named "Paulie Malignaggi."
Yeah...a chooch.
Yep. A dirty. Arrogant. Overrated guido.
This might actually be my favorite comment I've ever seen. lol perfection
So true 😂

Face the facts, my dear friend.
Ricky Hatton spend most of his career in Manchester protected by Frank Warren defending that pathetic WBU "world title" against bums. Ricky literally only has 2 or maybe 3 decent wins on his entire record.

Least he took decent fights and wasn’t a sucker puncher, not to mention fighting a few no ones and picking his opponents carefully to hit the 50-0 target.
From Ireland, we had tremendous respect for Ricky. A great fighter and an even greater person ☘️
Well said mate I battled the same battle as him and many others, that was outside the ring..(mine cut short within the ring sadly, not for ability, but migraines).. Ricky will always be my favorite fighter of all time. I miss seeing him fight but it was a great time to be a boxing fan. Good memories.
I would go further and say it was a great time for British sports in general. We had some world class ones.
I agree…sport in general the world over has changed for the worse in the last 20 years, to much bureaucracy..wokeness..weakness whatever the fck you wanna call it, which is why mma particularly ufc have done so well..people just want straight up competitive action, without the bullsht.
I really miss boxing from the late 90's to 2010's. So many great fighters and characters. Gotta give credit to Paulie. The guy had no power and managed to have a solid career in boxing.
Agreed...Paulie had skills tho!
HW scene was dead in the 00s tho
You can't ever take away the heart Pauli had. When he got beaten senseless by Miguel Cotto you had to admire the courage in him, Broken Orbital Bone, Face looked like he'd an Anvil dropped on his Dial. guts personified..fast forward to rentagob BJ Saunders "I'll go out on my shield, they need to carry me out of the Ring" 1 Left from Canelo to the same spot & Blow Hard Saunders sat on his stool & wouldn't come out no comparison!!

Great video gentleman, keep up the great work
Aw Ricky ,What a Great boxer ! That cip at the end cracked me up ! A Wonderful human being. God Bless you Ricky. RESPECT ! Lots of Love from Dublin from an old boxing fan XXXXX
I really like this video, it is respectful to both fighters. It also tells us a bit about both fighters after they take the gloves off for the last time.
This is the benchmark for how videos should talk about professional fighters. Getting some respect back into pro fighting can only be a good thing.
yes commentary was awesome. great video.
I feel the same way about it. I do have a question for you. Is it me, or has Larry Merchant been incapable of doing the post-fight interviews without sounding like a condescending d*ck in nearly every event he’s done in the past several years. To me, it seems like he doesn’t like boxing in the modern era, and is completely bored by all of it. Some of the questions seem more like digs & pot shots, and he rarely mentions any positive aspects of the fight. He has an adversarial approach & dynamic going on in his interviews, and the drawn out, uninterested style of questioning makes it sound like he’s bored with everything. He also looks down at the floor when they’re answering his questions. I know that part of that job is to ask the tough questions, and those are typically what fans really want to hear about, especially after a loss. For some reason, it just rubs me the wrong way. Jim Gray has the same job, but his style seems more respectful, with matter-of-fact lines of questioning. He does have one interview where he was being a prick. It was his All-Star Game interview with Pete Rose, where he was allowed to be back in an MLB stadium for the first time after being banned from the league for gambling & betting on games. Rose was there to be honored by fans, and Jim Gray started the interview by asking him if he wanted to talk about it. Looking back on it, that was out of line, but also kinda hilarious.
I'm really glad you mentioned Paulie's fight with Senchenko because it was a huge redemption for him. He flew to Ukraine, pretty much fought the perfect match, and KO'd Senchenko. And by the way, that was the same Senchenko who stopped Hatton in his last fight.
And this just shows you that styles really make fights.
Epic win and ko by Paulie that was a masterclass!.
Wasn’t the same Hatton though….He had been retired for 3 years and hadn’t won a fight in 4 years prior to fighting Senchenko.
@@jtballnutsVery true!! Hatton had been out for too long!
No, Hattons loss to Senchenko was about as significant as Barreras loss to Khan, Hatton was a superior fighter to Paul Malignaggi in every way
Paulie had a good career. Won some belts. Won some good fights. Beat some good fighters. Fought alot of good ones. Nice career I say.
Been waiting for a new upload. Hatton is such a stand up bloke was so happy when he won this fight.
Unfortunate that there was so much good competition at the top back then. He may be seen in a better light now otherwise.

boxing was so cool from the 90's through the early 2010's, before social media and over commercialization. You would only see the guys on fight night and there was so much fight mystery and drama
This wasn't one of those fights these guys were everywhere
Ricky the hit man is from about 2 miles from where I'm from. Always a great humble guy when you see him in the pub or on the street. Big love RH
So are you from Denton then ? I'm from Ashton but had a Hairsalon in Hyde and used to cut his mum Carols hair . Great lad Ricky , no British fighter has ever had a better fan base .
I sometimes wonder if that was his downfall the pub? Amazing and loved boxer yes but I'm not sure he ever disciplined his body like Mayweather?
Ricky Hatton was, and still is, loved because he's an ordinary person who rose to the pinnacle of the most brutal and demanding of sports.
He was talented, brave, could box, could fight - always on the offensive.
Humble, never ducked anyone - very human, and never will hid his struggles.
A wonderful man and a tremendous boxer,
Ricky is a national treasure , but malignaggi Is due a lot of respect exciting to watch humble in defeat.
tbf he had to be. He got plenty of practice.
Paulie had quick hands but no pop whatsoever. Looks like he's always pushing his punches, no snap in them
Paul was actually landing counters all night but he has zero power lol
True
And ricky knew how to take a punch.
His feet are not set when he is punching. So there is no power. Which is too bad, because the speed is there.
@@stickemuppunkitsthefunlovi4733easy for Ricky when his opponent is feather fisted.
What?? Hatton was the one landing all the counters off Paulies jab, Pauliie spent the fight clinching, he landed some nice jabs in the first round, got his shi t rocked in the second, barely threw a punch and hung on for dear life the rest of the fight
Even the commentators laughed at how Paulie called Hatton a club fighting clincher who always holds, and Hatton jabbed his head off from distance and confessed him with body work as Paul held
I love boxing channels like this. New sub
You could tell after the first round that Hatton just had no respect for his power and didn't have to worry about closing the space
What power 😅
Don't brag about taking my side piece 😂 What a line
Watching Ricky come up through the ranks and eventually beat Kostya Tszyu, was an absolute joy. His relentless pressure, blistering combinations and the sniper like accuracy of destructive power punches, made every fight compulsive viewing. He truly was a breath of fresh air to the boxing scene.
Ricky wanted to fight Mayweather for years, but his long standing professional team, trainer etc repeatedly advised against that. In the end, Ricky fired them, replaced them with members of his family and went ahead with arrangements to fght Mayweather. That was his first, big mistake. The second was believing that he could walk through anything Mayweather threw at him, completely underestimating the cumulative effect. If Ricky had defended himself properly in that bout, he might have won or at least got a draw.
Ricky is a terrific character and he remains one of my all time favourite boxers.
his defense was just not good enough to hang with the top dog. Even in the pauli fight, he was eating so many left hands, more specifically hooks. Good heart but he just never figured out how to deal with left hooks
He was never going to beat Floyd
@@nathan113 Yep, that's easy to say afterwards.
@Newbtuber The truth is that towards the end of his career Ricky neglected his defences, especially against Mayweather. He was 100% focused on offence. That was his mistake.
Ricky had previously demonstrated highly capable defences. If you don't believe this, watch his win over Kostya Tszyu.
Not until he face Manny p.
Excellent vid, i feel for Paulie, its hard not to like/respect this guy. Ricky Hatton was a very good fighter, it was his night

Spot on. Hatton was known for his body shots but the ref wouldn't let him fight on the inside. Not saying he would've guaranteed himself the victory but it would have been a much closer result
😂😂 man the commentary on this is hilarious
To stand any chance of beating Mayweather Ricky needed a ref who was prepared to let him fight his fight. In my view ref Joe Cortex robbed Ricky of his only chance by continually splitting him up from Mayweather, stopping him from working on the inside and disrupting Mayweather's flow.
Exactly. I just made a comment about this. Just look at the ref in this video compared to the Mayweather fight. Hatton wasn't allowed to take the fight to Mayweather. Not saying he would have won but we will never know.
@@frenchfrench4514 For sure. I'd never go as far as to say Ricky would of otherwise won, Mayweather is one of the best boxers of all time and even if Hatton was allowed to fight to his strengths it was going to be an uphill battle and would require the performance of his life, but what slim chance he had, Cortez robbed him of it and ended any chances of the fight being a contest.
