Happy Anniversary Ryan. Because of your channel, I continue to enjoy my ‘02 e39 M5 which I’m the original owner of. Friday the 21st will mark the 18th year. Thank you for sharing your passion! Cheers! (Sean)
I have watched this video more than once. Excellent! I am 62 and bought my 97' e39 540i around 2009 in Texas with 130k miles from an older guy. I restored it and it became my daily driver until late 2014. Since then it has been a garaged collectable in waiting. Zero rust, all original (except new transmission), gem I drive to keep parts lubricated. Now the values are starting to rise. Autotrader shows about 12 in the US, about half stock. No e39 M5s on Autotrader. Enthusiasts know what makes a great car! Needs some work but drives better than my 2015 Charger R/T Road and Track. Sweet!
When I saw this come up in my feed i set aside time, made a cup of tea and watched. Love the thorough explanation and attention to detail. Your vision and goals align with my idea of how a car should be treated. Excellent job well done Ryan. My only criticism is the license plate.....we have an AMG in the family so ya.... lol. Jks. Keep up the good work man.
Hey Ryan, i just purchased a 03 540i msport, alpine white grey interior. It's an automatic but the price was to good to pass up. Just curious what is the first thing I should jump on? I was thinking the timing chain guides. I wanna share on your channel if possible?
@@troylogan3653 If timing chains and guides haven't been done, they should be. Otherwise it'll come down to your specific car, if it were to need something immediately for example struts, brakes, etc.

Awesome. I'm 24 now but I remember seeing your videos quite a while back before I could even drive. I was just beginning to take over ownership of my mom's old E34 535i 5 speed (which I still own) after she got a clean titanium silver 2001 525i 5 speed in 2012. Of course I began watching even more of your videos since then to try to save her money on repairs as opposed to taking it to a shop. Love the attention to detail you bring with the ownership of this car and am happy to see you still posting about it. One of the earlier videos from this channel I remember was when you replaced the instrument cluster that was originally black but I believe had pixels? I feel you on a creator's standpoint, when I began learning to I turn wrenches on my E34 I had to resort to forums because there was absolutely nothing on UA-cam back then which in turn severed me for the better. I'm trying to get back on track with posting more frequent on my channel but that was a main goal of mine as well, to provide content that hadn't yet existed on UA-cam. I did a subframe bushing replacement video in a friend's e28 and was surprised at the amount of people commenting saying that it's been beneficial to them considering I don't have many subscribers. Keep up the excellent work, very inspirational story, looking forward to more!
Thats right! I did replace the black cluster because of bad pixels, back in 2011 or so. I had my local BMW dealer do it under good will from BMW North America. Thank you for your continued support, feedback, and this comment! More to come.
Holy heck! I've owned my M5 for longer than you! (March 2007) But I've been too chicken to do things to it. It needs a lot done... hopefully I will get the courage and skillz, and thanks for your insprirational/aspirational videos. I also bought mine from a second owner. He had two for sale - an E39 and an E34. Mine had just over 90,000km on the clock. (Cost a lot more than yours!) Nearly at 160,000km now - I don't drive far for work, and these days I'm too busy working... ='-( Had my best fun from 2007-2011. Waiting for the chance to stretch my car legs again...
This story is very nice, thank you. Since I was a kid who played nfs hot pursuit 2 on PC, I knew it was a great performing car but I liked the looks even more of the E39 in general. No sedan in my opinion looks better. I'm 29 now and 4 years ago I finally picked up my first E39. A Touring 525iA. I completely rebuilt the interior and personalized it but due to a career change I had to relocate and sell it. A couple weeks ago I picked up another low mileage 2000 528iA with only 87k. Shipped it from Columbus Ohio to Arlington Virginia. Absolutely mint condition. I've been using your videos for my e39 project. This time I'm keeping it as stock as possible. Only changing suspension and infotainment (even though I would love to keep the stock gps because of how cool and retro it looks). Otherwise I'm using your lighting videos to change front and rear and definitely going to upgrade some things under the hood to extend longevity and save money in the future.
Thank you for the comment! Your have a 528i with factory navigation? That's VERY rare! I would definitely keep that and simply add in the BlueBus for Bluetooth audio and calling. Thanks for the continued support!
I've owned my Moonstone Blue '99 M5 for 11 years now. I am still solvent. Seeing the same E39 M5 that you photed a year later for sale isn't ironic, it's coincidence.
Wow, thanks for sharing! I have your channel to thank for buying my own E39 M5. Otherwise it would have been a more daring purchase. I've been following your channel since 2016 and I really appreciate your passion for the E39 M5. What a trip you have done with your car and what an incredibly nice place you have chosen to enjoy it. I've only been to San Diego once but it was enough to realize that it's one of the best places there is.
I had an 83 Peugeot 505 turbodiesel from 1990 to 2001. That's the longest I've ever owned a car. That thing was a tank and I had to do very little to it while I owned it. I've had 5 cars since then including an 03 530i. I currently have an 01 e320 MB. It'll do. I never paid attention to your tag till the very end. I got it finally. My e320 is an AMG sport.
I was hesitant on clicking the video bc it was an hour long but wow it was fun listening to your story! I only had to pause bc im at work but ill cpntonute to give it a listen later when im on the road. Beautiful car btw. I recently purchased a used e46 fpr 3k and its pretty fun to work on.
Such a fan of the E39. Thankfully I now own my own...definitely not an M5 as I drive it daily but I love my ‘03 525i Sport Pkg. Hoping to soon share a video of my E39 on this channel. As always, big fan Ryan! Thanks to you and what you do for the fan base of this classic car!
Don’t know why it has taken me so long to find E39 Source. Was looking for a video on replacing the thermostat on my e39 M5 and found your “detail” description. Mine is a jet black 01. It’s a CA car with full documentation. I’m the third owner, second owner related to SC and sold it shortly after relocation. I retired a year ago. The car is in beautiful condition, but I’m beginning the journey to bring it back to 100% new condition. Looking foreword to viewing your other videos.
Awesome vid Ryan! What a journey it has been for you with this incredible car! Here’s to the next 10 years. Also loved the ultra wide angle shot with the iPhone at the end!
Ryan, huge fan of this channel and the work you do. Although I don’t own an M5 but do own and a fan of the E39 chassis (530i). Thanks to you and your buddy’s Kennan and Nate, I’ve done a ton of DIY’s on my own lately (from oil changes to shocks). You’ve inspired me that owning a bmw doesn’t have to break the bank but with the right tools, online DIY’s, patience and time, it’s do-able! I nominate you to be the head of BMW, BMW’s nowadays don’t compare to the E39 era! Here’s to more years of E39 ownership!
Thank you Christian, and accept your nomination! Future BMWs will be sold only with NA I6s and V8s, only rear wheel drive (but x-drive for X3 and X5), only 6-speed manual transmissions, and no more than 25 of models can be white, black, or silver. :D They'll be out of business in 3 months.
Wow. It looks so fresh and shiny. I can't believe how shiny. You have a great example there. It is wonderful to hear your enthusiasm for the e39. 18:19 OMG you're obsessed dude. This is like a masters dissertation on how to retro LCI your e39 M5. Round PDC sensors difference in sunroof switch, hmm. Yes the door seals are a thing...26:01 I need a break dude.
I have to admit that when I've seen your plate number for the first time laughed a lot, that happened a long time ago. I'm owning a e39 touring (station wagon) as a daily car and probably if I would keep all the papers for everything I would probably have a similar binder like yours. I'm from Romania and the streets were not so good in the past. I bought it from Germany 5 years ago, I made about 100.000 miles till now, I'm the second owner of the car and now it has 205.000 miles and works just amazing. I hope one day to afford to buy an M5. Well this been said take care and thanks for this video and keep doing cool video.
20:13 i don't know exactly for the M5 but on the standard 5 series, the pre facelift models came with the large gas pedal and the facelift models had the shorter one. i had a '97 E39 with the long pedal like yours and my 2001 and 2002 models have both the short pedal. Also to mention, they changed the short pedal again around 2001-2002, but only changed the base and the mounting bracket.
Awesome video! I own an e46 330ci and I recently sourced the rear electric sunshade for my BMW. I absolutely love it. While you already have a tint it does not really serve a purpose but it is still a very cool option to have!
I may get bored one day and want to add that, I have the parts already minus the different center console switch panel (very hard to find). I don't want the side shades though, they compromise the structural integrity of the door panels, cost a fortune, and are delicate to practically use.
Not many people deserve to own nice things but you definitely do.
people nowadays do scratch and bend testing... they don't care...

Wow...what an epic walkthrough and journey. Such a cool story, and such a special car.
Really great to see such a well looked after M5, awesome work man 👍
My dad used to have a 2001 Orient blue 530i with tan leather interior. Ever since that the e39 has been my favorite 5 series.
Saw this very car reviewed by Doug Demuro. He loved it !
This is CRAZY! I remember seeing your videos when I bought my first E39 all those years ago! Christ!
Wow 215k miles, looking great
I've owned my Moonstone Blue '99 M5 for 11 years now.
Fredrik, thank you so much for your continued support and kind words! Congrats on your M5 purchase as well :D
36:28 the old school OBD PORT
I was hesitant on clicking the video bc it was an hour long but wow it was fun listening to your story! I only had to pause bc im at work but ill cpntonute to give it a listen later when im on the road. Beautiful car btw. I recently purchased a used e46 fpr 3k and its pretty fun to work on.
Thank you for watching and commenting! Congrats on the E46 acquisition :D
i wish i had the money to just pay BMW to build me a brand new E39 M5 with a few retro fits.
Absolutely beautifully taken care of. Hats off to you Sir, Hats off indeed.
Thank you Kelvin! More about sharing a video on E39Source: www.e39source.com/participate
such an awesome car and impressive story!!!
owned mine for 17 years done 77k same spec uk
Great voice - not sure if it’s the voice or accent but there’s something smooth about the way you talk 👍🏻
I used your video’s and Doug Demuro’s review of your car to convince my dad to buy an e39 m5. He even orderd the navi service from your website!
That's pretty cool! Thanks for sharing this. I am glad that I have been helpful with your M5 acquisition.
Welcome Stephen! I hope you find my content useful, and I wish you the best of luck on the restoration!
Awesome vid Ryan! What a journey it has been for you with this incredible car! Here’s to the next 10 years. Also loved the ultra wide angle shot with the iPhone at the end!
Thanks Liam!
Congrats! I remember the videos of it in the cold damp Ohio garage. Now its enjoying Southern California.
Hell yeah, dude, congrats! I am hoping to source a mint Le Mans Blue on Caramel to make company for the F80 M3 in the garage in the next five years.
E39Source As a true enthusiast mind and many like minded bmw owners would totally agree with you!
Great Video! Glad to see you still have the M5.
I think your MY00 would be worth more than a lot of 01-03s with lower miles just because of your dedication to perfecting the car.
I remember driving this car i NFS: High Stakes/Hot Pursuit. Silver colour. Great to have this resource online.
Holy fuck how much money have you dropped into it
Now this is how you take care of a car. Just amazing. I need a E60 M5 in my life to take care of in the same way
I have to admit that when I've seen your plate number for the first time laughed a lot, that happened a long time ago.
Thank you Adrian! Good luck on the M5 quest, and enjoy that wagon. They'll run forever if you want them to.
oh man washing your car especially with such a nice driveway, can be a lovely thing to do
Also, not sure if you mentioned it, but get the silver/clear signal bulbs for the side marker too.
As always: Perfection.
I own this 20 years now, its real run good
Wow Ryan what a great M5 you have amazing that you take care of yourself 😮
Do you still have that M5 ? Just curious, thanks 😊
Thank you! I do still have the car, and it's a secondary vehicle now. I daily drive a 2002 540i and use the M5 on weekends and for shows/events.
this is how a car should be looking , beautiful
Thank you so much!
ahhh ryan, the e39 KING...
I use Akebono ceramic pads with slotted/drilled rotors and have had no issues with excessive dust or noisy brakes.
A car like this is on my bucket list
Still looking great!
Almost saw my e39 from Bimmer fest near yours I think. 2000 dinan 540 with the three piece US wheels. Nice meeting you that day. Great videos
It was nice meeting you! Thank you for the continued support.
It's the M5 of Theseus!
