Dick Schwartz describes how vulnerable parts (exiles) come about and how the protective system emerges to deal with the inner and outer worlds.(what traditional psychodynamic therapies would call the "defences"). He describes the hierarchy of "firefighters" (reactive protectors) and how to distinguish them from the pro-active "managers".
He comments on "the damage that Freud did" to the field and clarifies the three main goals of IFS with individuals. The question of when parts first appear is addressed and Dick spends time talking about how to get started using the model. the interface of medication and IFS, "direct access", and why IFS does not use"grounding" techniques when working with trauma.
