I picked up the heavy duty Diamondback cover last year back for my ‘17 Tacoma to secure work tools and I could not be happier. It is easy to use and durable. I also haul a lot of lumber on it and all the lashing points are perfect for tying things down. Price wise it was worth every penny.
How funny, I'm selling my wrangler and looking to get the Tacoma due to the fact that i can't secure stuff in the jeep. When I'm out and about. Love this set up and i will be copying it. Secure and practical. When the time comes watching the how to video will be really important. Way to help out the other people in this community.
Very comprehensive review! Had to let go of my White Toyota Tacoma and bought a new Black Silverado. Won't get the Diamondback Smooth Cover until mid June. Security is my main reason for the purchase. I'm really interested on how other functionality can be incorporated in this unique cover. Later, I plan on getting some secure Yakima Kayak holders - probably roof mounted. Access to the bed is important during camping trips. I will continue to monitor your videos for creative ways to utilize the Diamondback Truck Covers. Thanks for all the hard work you put into your videos.
Almost bought a diamond back cover but I load the bed of my truck so often with large items I would literally have to take the cover off once a week, this is why I’m loving my roll up cover :) love that setup though.
When I get a new truck I’m definitely getting a Diamondback. It’s expensive. But I don’t go through trucks fast. So it’s a big investment in cargo security. 👍🏻
I commented on another video not too long ago about not liking truck bed covers that open near the front and back. But as i'm looking at them more from pictures and doing research on whats out there i think these diamondback covers are growing on me more and more, just how versatile they are, i mean, i can't open the gate on my truck with my current cover while its closed and i always the cover i have from the beginning, the passenger side of the hinge in the back doesn't close and its way tilted from the left, almost like it's being blocked while its completely empty. I definitely have to purchase a diamondback as soon as possible
Great video. Lots of information. I would just say to make sure to link your past videos as you're talking about it. Like when you were talking about the bed cover, you should link the review you made about it. Any ways, always appreciate your reviews. Thanks.
Hey Mike, keep a close eye on those vertical bolts that go through the box tubing for your rack. They have a tendency to loosen up because the box tubing flexes when tightening the nuts and when a load is put on the bolts. Proper procedure (and it wouldn't be too hard in your particular setup) is to have a sleeve that the bolt goes through inside the box. This would prevent the box tubing from squishing when you tighten the nuts. Hope that makes sense... I'm happy to clarify if it doesn't.
Last Line Of Defense Yeah, you should be able to get some round tubing at the hardware store that will fit over the bolt; anything that's not SUPER thin will be fine, steel or aluminum, and cut it to fit inside the box tubing and you're GTG. Of course, some kinda locking nut would be a good addition too.
Yeah I have nylon locking nuts and washers underneath - checked and none of them were loose (yet), but had previously noticed a very slight bow in the aluminum tubing. I noticed this though when I originally mounted it because of how much I tightened the bolts.
Nice setup, I’m going to use a lot of your ideas here, except I’m going with the Voodoo bed-rack because they make a bracket to go along with Diamondback Bed Cover with their Voodoo system, hope it holds up.
That was awesome as always! I love your lengthy videos and look forward to them! You should do a “shout out” video for some channels you like and watch yourself
I got a trd 4Runner since I knew I'd spend a ton to secure the bed. Plus you can sleep in the back if you have a roof rack to put your junk on. But to each his own.
Rubicon V I am in the 4runner or Tacoma conundrum myself. By the time I put a camper shell on the 🌮 it ends up the same or more money as a 4runner only with a lot of horror stories about spending the $ and still getting leaks and dust intrusion
I am not really into off roading. I am just into camping a lot. I like your set up with roof top tent on the top of your truck bed. And I found this 2017 Toyota tacoma off road with a trd rim and a nice tire, a roof rack and some few goodies for CAD$40,000.00. Now I wonder if really need a truck with crawling system on it? At my age of 64 just wonder if I really need this kind of truck. Thanks
Ok ;;;;;;; I'm in the market for a 2018 toyota TUNDRA and want to travel cross country with your system and an Airstream basecamp and 2 cats . I'm going back to the West from Florida ; Can you hook me up with type of system to make my road trip more INTRESTING ? Thank and Cool Video .
Takes up room, adds weight, I don't really feel like I ever need it. They're cool - I just don't have any desire to own one right now. Maybe I'll try one out eventually and get hooked, but right now I'm happy without.
On older video you said you only had the se diamondback cover, but this video I believe you said Hd diamondback to support about 1600lbs. Did you upgrade or could you modify SE model into HD model?
Hey Mike. I hope you are doing well. We are big fans of your channel. Just got a Tacoma, and we added a shell and the IKamper Skycamp 2.0. I was trying to go through your link to get the TC bed stiffeners, and the link is not working. Do you get any benefit from us getting it through your link? Just wanted to be sure as we would like to get it through your link if it helps the channel. Thanks!
Awesome video. Question... how do you open the pelican with the tent in place? Lol it’d be cool to side mount one similar fashion as your hi-jack on the passenger side.
Love you videos can’t wait for the next one . Can’t wait to get my truck to get one this is cheap to me for how strong it is and how long it will last and a life time warranty. Hey for the extra money it’s a reasonable price to but anyway god bless
Awesome set up but with the tent on the only access to the bed is only thru the tail gate right? Also is this the HD or SE. Thought it was the SE with the 4 Tie downs but some comments are saying this is the HD.
Did your Tacoma come with the Toyota tri-fold cover? If so did you remove the original attach points as well? Love what you’re doing man! Love that you share it all in the fashion that you do. Thanks for the tan olight mini flash sale notification back when. I was able to score one for my 19X and love the combo! Need a holster for it all now...
Thought the same. Saved my pennies and braced myself when I hit the confirm order button. I don't regret it one bit. It's like carrying a flashlight, you never knew how much you'd use it until you had it.
For some, it's definitely a big investment for sure. It'll outlast your truck though, plus made in the USA with a lifetime warranty - great company as well. I couldn't imagine having a truck without one, now.
yeah i am of the mindset buy once cry once. i dont even have a truck yet, so long ways for me. but im loving this content and all ur content. plan on hitting u up for a holster after i get a light. just dunno if i want appendix. id like to see more m2.0 stuff and im thinking about a BCM AR. But also looking up prepper and survival gear, camping trucks etc. cover it all! haha. good stuff.
Hey Mike, I'm really digging your channel. Just wondering if you could share why you upgraded to the HD cover? I read a few comments here where you mention the SE would work for this setup. Does the placement of the rails add additional load rating? I weigh about 250 and wonder about being in the tent with my gf, who is only about 100lbs. Are their other benefits you could share between the two models? Sorry so many questions. Thanks!
Yeah I think the SE would hold up fine - Diamondback might recommend the HD to match up with their posted specs, but the SE is a very solid cover and a little lighter as well. I have the HD at the moment, just because they wanted me to test a few changes they made, so I was using it.
If you wanna raiseit like I did, you'll need longer bolts for either system. I went with the aa cause I liked the look a little better and the towers were a little taller, I think it's a little lighter and it came with the ladder mount things that I used for my maxtrax
Yeah, definitely a handy setup. I don't really like the look of them, or how tall that whole setup ends up getting... I've considered something like that though (am still considering) because it opens up some more room / ability to travel with the dog back there and passengers up front, etc. If I had more passengers (kids), plus a dog, something like that might be the logical next step.
No, I never use it so I don't need easy access to it. I'd never mount anything to the bed though, it'd get in the way of loading, unloading, sitting on the tailgate and using it as a table - all things I regularly do.
Hey Michael, yeah there is an SE and an HD - the SE is rating for 400 (dynamic) and the HD is 1600. The SE would be sufficient for this setup though as well.
Did you switch to the heavy duty Diamondback cover or is that the standard one with the 400lb capacity? Thanks for the great videos man! Keep up the good work!
Last Line Of Defense thanks! I also have a ~550lb quad that I’m thinking I’d wanna be able to throw up there and am trying to decide on HD vs. SE! What made you go to the HD?
I'm guessing you're missing a bit. I do have sliders now - but there are a dozen or more uses of a hi-lift outside of lifting the truck with the sliders (which honestly, with a rig with a lot of suspension travel often times sucks) - this is my favorite device though to use with a hi-lift - amzn.to/2liXea5
Jake Ballard hahahahaha Im definitely sure that was the reason. The uses the he eluded to also requires other equipment that he doesn’t have. Overlander poser lmao
Jake Ballard “ I have a covered bed but let me strap this Pelican case on the cover so i can carry my gear”. “ oh yes i can lock the case to the bed so that its secure
This video is of the HD. You can tell by the number of cross bars on it around the 15:22 mark. If you look at this Diamondback Review Vdeo that is the SE model you can tell by the cross bars around the 7:58 mark. That along with the blacked out hinges and hardware on the cover in the new video suggest that he got a new HD cover in the past month or so(when they upgrade to all black hardware) Which would make sense as the weight he was attaching to the top of the SE model was probably not recommended!
Hate the look, heavy, tent would be way up high, etc. If I had a full length bed, then I'd consider a topper, since I'd be able to sleep in there if I needed/wanted. On a short bed, I think it makes less sense and I prefer this setup.
Last Line Of Defense Good deal. I have a '17 Tacoma Sport DCLB and just put a canopy on it. Slept in it over the last couple days at the PNW Overland Rally here in Washington State. It worked great! I will need to work on some condensation control as the windows were fogged every morning, even with the windows open about half way. However, I have a RTT coming that will go on the Prinsu rack on the cab, so I won't really need to worry about it!
You can’t fully utilize the Diamondback with the RTT is on so the advantage of having a Diamondback is ...? Oh, you’ve got a hard cover that looks “cool”. Got it.
Secure hard cover that you can mount tents, hi-lift, cases, etc to, which is fully-weatherproof. And oh, as mentioned in the video, the 90% of the time when I don't have the stuff mounted - functions as 'normal'.
So why is a high lift jack necessary? When might you use that? I expect you might have mentioned it in the next, more in-depth video, but at the beginning of that video you said that a lot would be rehash of this video, so I chose to not watch it. Thanks.
Too much to put into a comment, but hundreds of articles out there you could check out - www.roundforge.com/articles/best-hi-lift-jack-accessories-fourwheeling/

Mike! We had an argument back in 2016. You were a gentleman. I was cordial. You’ve got a fan. You seem happy and your set up Is dope. Enjoy!
Haha thanks - what was our argument about?
Last Line Of Defense
Politics. Standard.
Keep having fun.
I love my taco and the lifestyle it affords me.
Ah yeah... political arguments bring out the best in us all
We all know that looking cool is the most important
You've sold me on it and It's cheaper than what I was quoted for a ARE overland top. Love your channel man
davewoodyls1 those ARE & SNUGTOP are stupid expensive
I live about 20 minutes from Diamondbacks headquarters here in PA. Factory direct discounts ;)

Oh snap! Just ordered my Diamondback last week off your setup... awesome videos and info. Much thanks for posting all

Last Line Of Defense Yeah, you should be able to get some round tubing at the hardware store that will fit over the bolt; anything that's not SUPER thin will be fine, steel or aluminum, and cut it to fit inside the box tubing and you're GTG. Man. The whole pulley system removable tent thing is my grand plan. Just need a garage, roof tent, Diamond back cover :(. Excellent stuff man
Dude! Excellent video! I look forward to watching more. I'm not there yet... just have the Toyota truck. But I'm starting soon!
Nice setup, I’m going to use a lot of your ideas here, except I’m going with the Voodoo bed-rack because they make a bracket to go along with Diamondback Bed Cover with their Voodoo system, hope it holds up.
You should do some overlanding vlogs! Could be a good direction for the channel, on top of everything else.
That was awesome as always! I love your lengthy videos and look forward to them! You should do a “shout out” video for some channels you like and watch yourself
That's a cool set up Mike. I just ordered a Dimond back cover. Lucky for me they give military discounts. I'm looking forward to the detailed one.
Nice, hope you love it, and thanks for your service!
This series is too good man... also get those hats out!!! :)
Never answer question... great job Mike...
Please show your pully system! I have been debating on how to do one for my rtt
Great video 👌, I'm now trying to buy a tacoma and modifying it and your mods are great .
I got a trd 4Runner since I knew I'd spend a ton to secure the bed. Plus you can sleep in the back if you have a roof rack to put your junk on. But to each his own.

hdjc86 That was my thinking exactly.
Rubicon V of course I still lurk the vanlife videos wondering if I could fit a Quigley 4x4 van in my parking spot and do a build for less $s
Awesome setup mate
Nice to see those cords in use, I was wondering what you had thought of with them!!
I am not really into off roading. I am just into camping a lot. I like your set up with roof top tent on the top of your truck bed. I need the detailed video! gearing up right now to build this setup on my DB cover and taco!
You must only have the base model Yeti cooler haha
Sick set up man!
Solid and well thought out setup!
Great set up Mike, love the truck vids! I wish f150s came in this color
Fantastic rig!
Sometimes I feel the overlanding community is super vain and judgmental. Love your vids, keep keeping it real
Those attachment points are called Cleats! Haha. subbed.
Mike, why not add a bed slide so you can drop the gate and pull the stuff in bed out for easy access? Truck looks great with the lift.
Takes up room, adds weight, I don't really feel like I ever need it. They're cool - I just don't have any desire to own one right now. Maybe I'll try one out eventually and get hooked, but right now I'm happy without.
Sweet setup! Subscribed!
Do you have a video of the pulley system? If not could you do one showing you using it
Love the little cargo nets!!! Think you could mount those gas cans in the same position but to the tool box that you had in there?
Awesome truck!

That Fieldcraft Survival... so hot right now
Just buy a 2018 Tacoma TRD off road quick sand I love it going to get it set up I'm in Coos Bay where are you at
Lol I doubt you have a Yeti! You seem more like a pelican cooler kinda guy!
I like your methods ✌️
Did your Tacoma come with the Toyota tri-fold cover? If so did you remove the original attach points as well?
Love what you’re doing man! Love that you share it all in the fashion that you do.
Thanks for the tan olight mini flash sale notification back when. I was able to score one for my 19X and love the combo! Need a holster for it all now...
how many miles have you put on the truck so far and is it living up to the legendary tacoma reliability?
Going to buy Diamondback cover tomorrow but I am not Military. Any discounts codes for common citizens. Help me out.
Thanks for sharing!
Awesome video! Do you have the 5 or 6 foot bed?
Think the Se version of the cover can still support a tent set up?
1500-2000 dollars for bed cover. Yeah that is expensive or out of price range.
Thought the same. Saved my pennies and braced myself when I hit the confirm order button. I don't regret it one bit. It's like carrying a flashlight, you never knew how much you'd use it until you had it.

It is expensive but well worth the price. I have one on my F-150 and it is the bomb. Buy once, cry once.
we all have AR's that cost more so its really not that expensive
Cool video
You low key look like "Stryker of Seattle" with a hat lol
Googled "Stryker of Seattle" - didn't find anything of relevance really. What is it?
I love your truck. I want the Same truck,! so Jealous. Good Video
Diamondback Cover: Military Discount Active Duty/Veterans 10% fyi.
Peter Harper ty
Got my military discount. Was fairly easy.
If I owned a Fiskars I'd hide it too, lol.
Oh man, they're good - affordable workhorses.
You're a highend gear tester. I'm an axe snob. Pick up a few, I promise you will be afterwards also!
Hey do you have a spare tire that is the same size as the existing tires
Just bought my cover damnit 😭
Noticed you went from the M1000 racks to the AA-Racks. I'm guessing the bolts wouldn't go all the way through the bend in the M1000's?
If you wanna raiseit like I did, you'll need longer bolts for either system. I went with the aa cause I liked the look a little better and the towers were a little taller, I think it's a little lighter and it came with the ladder mount things that I used for my maxtrax
Or ya could have gotten a camper shell and put the tent on top of a roof rack ;) That's what I plan on doing when I get a Tacoma
Is that an extended box?
Any thought about mounting your axe to the inside of the tailgate instead of the front of the bed?
No, I never use it so I don't need easy access to it. I'd never mount anything to the bed though, it'd get in the way of loading, unloading, sitting on the tailgate and using it as a table - all things I regularly do.
is this a Diamond Back HD on this video?
How did you mount your fiskars hatchet?
ha, ha, ha, ha..kinda creepy with all those keys hanging in your bed lol. Just kidding bro. Just subbed. lol
Hey man. I heard where you said your cover can hold up to 1600lbs. On their website it says only 400lbs. Are there different covers? Thanks
Hey Michael, yeah there is an SE and an HD - the SE is rating for 400 (dynamic) and the HD is 1600. The SE would be sufficient for this setup though as well.
Last Line Of Defense Thanks man!!
Did you switch to the heavy duty Diamondback cover or is that the standard one with the 400lb capacity?
Thanks for the great videos man! Keep up the good work!
This is the HD - but the SE would be totally sufficient for this setup.
Last Line Of Defense thanks!
I also have a ~550lb quad that I’m thinking I’d wanna be able to throw up there and am trying to decide on HD vs. SE!
What made you go to the HD?
I'd probably go for the HD then for carrying quads!
Last Line Of Defense Sweet. Just waiting for the super secret code then! Hahaha
What happened to the bin you had in the bed, took up too much space?
I was finding I was putting a lot of full height things into the bed of the truck, so I took it out to see how it went without it for awhile.
Do you know anyone in Southern Utah? I want to get into over-landing.
Or an Australian Patriot travel trailer . with the tundra
diamondback have a military discount...
So how do you lift your truck with the hilift without metal bumpers or rock sliders? Am I missing something?
I'm guessing you're missing a bit. I do have sliders now - but there are a dozen or more uses of a hi-lift outside of lifting the truck with the sliders (which honestly, with a rig with a lot of suspension travel often times sucks) - this is my favorite device though to use with a hi-lift - amzn.to/2liXea5

Jake Ballard good eye man.
Jake Ballard “ I have a covered bed but let me strap this Pelican case on the cover so i can carry my gear”. “ oh yes i can lock the case to the bed so that its secure
I knew I liked you...... you like Fiji water🙃
Do you leave your gear on your truck all the time?
Ant1-Hero in one of his other videos he explains how he removes the tent and such. Pretty easy to do
Who makes the antenna?
Is that the HD or SE Diamondback cover?
This video is of the HD. You can tell by the number of cross bars on it around the 15:22 mark. If you look at this Diamondback Review Vdeo that is the SE model you can tell by the cross bars around the 7:58 mark. That along with the blacked out hinges and hardware on the cover in the new video suggest that he got a new HD cover in the past month or so(when they upgrade to all black hardware) Which would make sense as the weight he was attaching to the top of the SE model was probably not recommended!
Horizontaly mounted maxtrax
You switched to the HD cover.
I was wondering the same thing. Mike did you upgrade to a HD?
BLUE FALCON

Yup - check the video description of all my videos.
Why did you go with the cover and not a canopy?
Hate the look, heavy, tent would be way up high, etc. If I had a full length bed, then I'd consider a topper, since I'd be able to sleep in there if I needed/wanted. On a short bed, I think it makes less sense and I prefer this setup.

Get yourself a Silky Bigboy, or Katana boy... You'll thank me later. Folding pull saws.
Actually picked one up recently. I had a couple of trees blow over on my property that I wanted to test one out on.
You must be Matt Ogus’s brother
What do u do for a living? Very curious :)
I'm a web developer, and I run a small holster company, and I do this UA-cam thing. Maybe other stuff too, here and there.
And oh, as mentioned in the video, the 90% of the time when I don't have the stuff mounted - functions as 'normal'.

have you been able to talk to the overland guys about the discount??
