That right hand a couple of seconds before the one that dropped Malvares, was the one that messed him up, the finale punch gave him quadruple vision: Thanks for posting man, cool.
This was actually on the undercard of Ali-Spinks II at the Superdome in New Orleans. It was a prime time boxing show; it was not on Wide World of Sports.
Grew up in Bakersfield, so the fights from the Olympic Auditorium every week on TV was a must for me and Pops. Lopez was our favorite. My dad used to say "If he cared at all about getting hit, he'd be unstoppable."
Danny Lopez was blessed with a great right hand one of the most powerful punchers in feather weight history but sadly no defence, a stand up slugger which we all love to watch.
This is a vintage "Little Red" Lopez fight and why ABC loved him while disdaining some other great fighters lightweight and under -- down or in trouble in the first two or three rounds, comes back for the KO win. You couldn't guarantee a lot of commercials, but you knew the fans would be riveted to the set while the fight lasted.
lol red had the most powerful punch of any featherweight in history . All his fights were exciting. After his second lost to the great Sal Sanchez he shortly retired. Whats the point of continuing ifcyou cant be chsmpion, and I don’t see anybody beating Salvatore. He and Sanchez put on a couple 14 thrilling rounds you will ever see. Sal msybofcwon danny defended his title seven times had a good run as champion, but Sanchez was one of all time greats and in my estimation Sanchez and saddler are greatest featherweights in history of boxing. Only reason Sanchez not one his career was far too brief but his resume was still frill of quality. Little red was exception in his own right. Defended the title seven times prior Sanchez fight. He was a media darling for how he fought. A light wright fighter who fought like a heavyweight! He didn’t throw a lotvof punches punches he did throw were so impactful, every punch that his it’s targeted area, was a new realm in hurt. Those were words loosely translated from one of lil reds opponents back in late 70s. Lil red was not most talented fighter at feather weight but perhaps most feared due to his outlandish power never seen before in a fighter at his wright class. ABC wide world of sports would show all lol red fights he was thier favorite fighter! Back then! He doesn’t get respect he deserves considering he was a great champion at a time it was tough to hold onto featherwrightvtitle a lot of great fighters like Bobby chacon bazooka limon were around every corner. Not too mention the junior feather weights like Wilfredo Gomez who never lost a fight at his wright class going 36-0 36 ko he host at that division like I said a lot of great fighters and sbout in lightweight you hand stone hands Roberto Duran the greatest light weight in history. People should see his light weight bouts and realized how undersized he was fighting at welter middle and light heavy weight but he still gave us great fights with his unique pressure style. Roberto innovated.
Interesting. The difference between the champion and the also ran. Champion gets hit with everything and comes back with one solid shot that puts the challenger down to be counted out. I watched a lot of Danny's fights, including the terrible beatings he took against Salvador Sanchez. There was never any question as to his will and punching power. Wonder how he's doing these days considering the punishment he'd absorb in some fights.

Absolutely correct. The right hand before the combination was the key blow.
I remember watching his fights on Wide World of Sports with my father... for FREE.

Danny Little Red Lopez another one of my favorites always went down early but at the end he would be the last one standing!
Lopez had AWESOME leverage with wicked timing; and he was a fucking great guy to boot:)

One of the best fights I've seen in my 35 years of following boxing!
True legend!
He was one of the exciting fighters back in the day, when fighters fight every 3 months not once a year
Lopez and other great fighters in the early eighties is why I became a big boxing fan.
Rated 26th overall in top 100 power punchers all time. He could hit like a mule.
wow, what a way to come back after taking a beating.
Irish, Mexican and Ute Indian.
One of the greats 🥊
the come back kid....
I was there ringside with Gene Fullmer
man.....he had hart. .and could box
vicious right hand when the range was right.
Malvarez debió ganar , ya la tenia ganada , es una pena que haya perdido
How many times Lopez was caught in the first round?
corta pero emocionante
Lopez = 0 defense, 1000 offense.
When talking about great punchers, Lopez name should be in the forefront.
he was Gentleman in the Ring[ Danny] no ILICIT Tactics ,Hugging rabbit punching ect!!!
malvarez regalo esta pelea salió a cruzar golpe innecesariamente.pudo ser CAMPEÓN mundial

@BarrioAztecaLOCO
Before there was Arturo Gatti there was Danny Lopez.
un peleadorazo el piel roja lastima que se encontró con sal Sánchez en su esplendor
Lopez took so many punches its a miracle he is still alive...only thing he had was punching poeer.

Malvarez looked like Sal Sanchez but far from him as a boxer.
Looked like a dive!
The mafia was present !
Malvares reminds me a lot of the late great Sal Sanchez who will KO Lopez come February 1979
@MrSlazz11 nobody he hit clean ever stayed on their feet. If he was a heavyweight he would have been #1
Se ve muy falso este KO
That kinda looked like that was staged!!!! Malvares threw the fight!!!
