    Even though I could see you were getting frustrated, you kept your cool and adjusted your game plan. A good lesson for all divers no matter if you’re spearfishing or just doing a pleasure dive. Thanks for another great video and I’m still waiting on that gear video! Lol!

    Hi Dan, I had Black Grouper at Parkshore Grill (downtown St. Pete) yesterday and it was absolutely delicious. I told the server about your U-Tube channel and there was a good chance your boat shot that fish. Let me know when you are ready to unlock the safe and sell a few numbers. Let’s start the bidding at $500 for 5 numbers off of Bayport in 60-80 ft of water. Keep the videos coming- cheers!

    Ha! This video was medicinal for me. Seems like a lot of my shots have complications. Ever have a Mango chomp down on you while trying to get him under control? I had one that wouldn’t let go of my arm and another my stomach-same day. Have the holes in my dive shirt to prove it. 😂

    • @danmacmahon3973
      @danmacmahon3973  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Scott, glad you liked it! Sometimes a blooper dive is just what the doctor ordered. Yeah Mangos are bad news and deserve to be called snapper. A good friend had the brilliant idea of sticking an "almost dead" one down his shorts while free diving and saving a swim back to the boat. As you've probably already guessed, it snapped down on a particularly sensitive part of his anatomy. If I've ever laughed harder, I sure don't remember it! Stupid should hurt! Best, Dan

    Beautiful rock bottom Dan. Question: Have you ever tried using a pole spear for a stringer as opposed to loop. If so give Pro’s and cons. I used a pole spear as a stringer after a run in with a bull and decided I didn’t want bleeding fish hooked to my side. I used a 6ft Pole with a good barb and long tang. Also good for rescuing poor shots.
    Just a thought cause you are better than I ever was, and I’ve taken many Grouper.

    • @danmacmahon3973
      @danmacmahon3973  3 роки тому

      Hey Barry, no I never have tried that but it's an interesting thought. I never clip a fish laden stringer to myself... Others do and it seems to work for them but I've had a couple of buddies who used to do it, had very bad problems with it and don't do it anymore.
      One had 3-4 fish on a stringer attached to a weight belt with a serious clip. He was diving on a big steel wreck and a 600 pound plus JF inhaled the stringer and tried to drag him through a whole in the side of the wreck, into the inside of the wreck. The weight belt finally let go but not before he was banged up and bleeding pretty good. If there had been something pointed and sharp or if the weight belt hadn't given, it could have been fatal, easily.
      Another had a 8' Tiger try to inhale it , which means the Shark was snapping and twisting mere inches from your body. No way he could unclip the stringer with that going on and he was lucky to have not gotten seriously bitten.
      Attaching bloody fish on a stringer to my body with a metal clip. No thanks!
      Best, Dan

    This morning really wasnt your morning!! I watch all ur vids on UA-cam and this dive has to be your most sloppy dive lol...but like the fish really got some energy on this day...the vis does still fool you after all these years? Is it something a diver could get over with the clear vis?

    Dan, I have to ask...... have you ever targeted any type of shark for any reason? I enjoyed watching you ph a bull in a different video, but I know it wasn't a targeted species.

    • @danmacmahon3973
      @danmacmahon3973  3 роки тому

      Hey Jimmy, no , I don't have a Shark License and there's really no market for them anymore if I did. I try to not give them problems and hope they don't give me any.
      I'll basically leave an area if possible to avoid them. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't.
      The guys and me try hard not to have to kill one, but every once in a while, you simply have no reasonable choice.
      I haven't had to PH one in quite a while and hope that holds through the upcoming Shark Summer.
      Best, Dan

      TH1983, we make our own guns. I would think any quality wood gun would work. I like the 60" length shafts which dictates a 55-60" TL gun. Ours are about 58" tip to tip with no spear in them. Best, Dan

    Another day at the office...thanks again for sharing your adventures with us, Dave. What caliber do you have in your powerhead? I use 357 mag is that sufficient enough for self defense?

    • @danmacmahon3973
      @danmacmahon3973  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Lee, yes, a .357 is usually more than ample for SD. The only time it wouldn't be is if you were diving really deep. At 33', you get 1/2 the bang of what you get at the surface, at 99', you get 1/4 , and at 198' you'd only get 1/8 the bang that you'd get at surface. Best, Dan

    Dan another awesome dive - keeping me positive during this craziness in lockdown thanks! 3 questions and thanks in advance for your insights:
    1. I am a Master Scuba thinking about doing either my Tech Cert or DiveMaster/Instructor. Given the depths you are diving which I want to do, it looks like tech is the way to go- is that the cert/training you have to dive to those depths (I know experience is also critical)?
    2. I am looking to buy a new Reg - what do you recommend in terms of features and capability - obviously want ease of breathing but what else do you recommend (I am not in to cold water diving even though I am in Canada).
    3. I am also about to invest in a new BCD system and wondering what you recommend. I know all this is personal preference to a large extent but I am interested in your thoughts. I want a donut with double tanks and manifold - I noticed you guys use one larger tank with a second smaller one often I think - rather than two larger tanks? Also are guys using Nitrox/gas mix?
    Your thoughts as always are much appreciated!

    • @danmacmahon3973
      @danmacmahon3973  3 роки тому

      GC, # 1... I have a Trimix Cert through TDI. #2... The only regs I use are Zeagle's. They've done a great job for us the past 20 years. I'm sure there are other great regs out there, but my only recent experience has been with with Zeagle gear. #3... I also use Zeagle BC's and Wings....their Stiletto and Ranger jackets are excellent tech spearfishing BC's. When I was doing deeper stuff, I used their SS BackPlate with their big bertha wing. #4 Yes, I use Nitrox up to 150' or so and a light Helitrox blend from 150'-200'ish...after ~220' I usually go to Trimix. Would enjoy hearing about what you do and what level of training is currently required for the depths you want to dive. Best, Dan
