To me this is the most terrifying story in the book. To heck with monsters and gore, psychological terror where one is questioning one's own sanity....I cannot imagine anything more frightening.
This was another one that really creeped me out as a kid. The government covers up a plague outbreak by 'disappearing' someone, and her relatives are persuaded that she never really existed.
I recall the doctor knows he was going to get sued if the girl's relatives learned he has a dead client on his hands. He wanted to save his cowardly ass by telling the hotel staff to hide all evidence that the girl and her mom checked into the hotel in the first place. Everyone pretended to not recognize the girl and her mom. They all acted like those two never existed.
According the book this is actually based on a true story. Apparently, the mother had a form of the plague and died while her daughter was out. The hotel manager, afraid that word would get out and people wouldn't go to the hotel for fear of their health, devised a plan to get rid of the body and change the layout of the hotel room so that when the daughter came back it would look like a completely different room. Creepy!
This story alone is terrifying. Forget ghosts, murderers and the funny stories. Honestly, when I first read this, I was freaking out. A young girl is lost in a country where English isn't the primary language, her mother has up and vanished mysteriously, and the people she met, act as if they don't remember who she is and even the embassy doesn't know the situation and cannot help. Anyone in Rosemary's shoes would have a panic attack for sure. Just imagine the pressure and anxiety that you would feel in this situation. I'd rather jump off a bridge. This story is one that those who are travelers would be scared shitless when hearing this. It can happen anywhere, and this situation was an actual event that happened, which makes this even more horrible. I honestly thought this story was the scariest. But the whole series has some great stories!
WELL SAID. CREEPIEST ONE YET. This one takes the GOLD MEDAL. "The Dream" isn't so scary next to this one. Not even "Harold" is that bad compared to THIS one.
I get it bro you liked the story, and I loved it too but you can’t say it puts the rest of the books to shame stop exaggerating. The other stories are just as amazing, and scary. Just cause you like this one the most doesn’t mean you gotta disown the rest of the series smh.
I read this story long ago and it was based on a true story. I heard that the young woman who suspected that she was lied to, returned to the hotel years later and bribed one of the employees who worked at the hotel during the time to reveal what really happened.
In my opinion, this is the most eerie story in all of the three Scary Stories books. If you can try and picture the whole story in your head, like I did when I first read it, its actually really terrifying.
I’m not going to say I have a stomach for gore, and as such this book did freak my out in 5th grade. But *this* chapter is the one I remember. Not any of the others, this one. Because this is so much scary than any others are. Because this feels realistic, assuming it isn’t based in reality. It feels like this *could* happen. And that’s the best kind of horror for me. Not some fantasy devil or witches or magical covens, but things like these. Cults, manipulation, lies. Of course there’s death and gruesomeness but adding realism to the situation makes it so much scarier. Because now *you* think and wonder, ‘Could this be happening to *me* ?’ And that will *always* be scarier than some magical thing.
This was an episode on the classic Alfred Hitchcock Presents program titled “Into Thin Air.” Aired way before Scary Stories Vol. 3 was published- Oct 30, 1955. Story by Alexander Woollcott (uncredited), teleplay by Marian Cockrell.
Perhaps more unnerving than the premise of the story is the illustration. A door has untold possibilities behind it, and it provides a much different kind of uneasy feeling than seeing some disturbing image or terrible monster.
I feel like this actually happen and someone wanted to say it without getting beat so they made it into a scary story knowing dam well this actually happens won't be shocked if it happens in Paris of all places
Movie? No, it would work a lot better as an episode of a television show, like an anthology series. A full length movie would need a lot more to the story than just a simple act of gaslighting
Speaking of episodes in television shows… Final Destination was originally supposed to be an episode of the X-Files. But they made it a movie franchise instead
@@nsasupporter7557 _The Frighteners_ started life as a spec script Peter Jackson submitted to _Tales From The Crypt_ which was felt to be strong enough to not need that brand to help sell it.
This is the most frightening story of all the others in my opinion. The government covering up all this. That something like this happened. I know its just another story but why does it feel like something like this is happening at most governments. Anyway, watching this while on community quarantine.
Reminds of of an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents: IMDB Into Thin Air (30 Oct. 1955) When a young woman leaves her ill mother in a Paris hotel room and comes back later, she finds her mother is missing, and all the hotel's employees deny she and her mother were ever there.
THIS HORROR STORY TEACHES US AN IMPORTANT LESSON: "BE CAREFUL WHICH COUNTRY U CHOOSE TO GO ON VACATION U MAY BAD LUCK OR SOMETHING HORRIBLE MIGHT HAPPEN, ANYWAY NO MATTER IN WHICH COUNTRY U ARE EVEN IF YOU ARE IN YOUR ORIGIN COUNTRY SOMETHING WRONG OR ABSOLUTELY SAD COULD HAPPEN.
So if this can happen then I would assume if anyone went to Wuhan China in December 2019, then they can experience something similar like this just like this Paris story.
Of course, the doctor could have just told Rosemary nothing about the kind of illness it was. That would probably be easier than alerting 100 people to a conspiracy.
If her mother would have died in the hotel she could have caused a huge public outcry which would have been worse for the country and the hotel that was making bank off travelers.
Yes!, you're right. I can remember now, It like an old legend or something like that, it was the inspiration for a movie from the 30s, some novels too, and also on an episode from "Alfred Hitchcock Present" epidode: Into thin Air.
@@Mar.Escobar24 so why not just say the woman spoke English? Yes what it said initially, conveyed the same idea but this part just bothered me for some reason lol
@@Smiley0.1 It's to keep the wild goose chase going; every moment Rosemary is out in the streets is another moment the hotel staff have to dispose of Mrs. Gibbs, scrub down the room, redecorate the room, erase all records of them ever being there, and calling the police to tell them to repeat the same lie.
Not surprising. All the stories in the Scary Story books are based on urban legends and other known ghost stories. Many of them have been around for a long time.
But Wuhan China did attempt to do this way back in December 2019. They tried to cover it up. Only difference is they failed. Wuhan China took the same playbook from this Paris story and applied that in their country. Difference is Wuhan China failed to do the government cover up and for that, covid 19 started to spread and causes a panic all over the country. In this Story to Tell In The Dark, Paris covered it up and at the same time prevented the outbreak from happening but in exchange, kill Rosemary.

How were they able to change the room so fast? If they painted the walls why didn’t she smell the new paint?
That would be extremely infuriating.
It cut this part out, but also in the book Rosemary later bribes someone and finds out what happened
