Based on the use of different weapons, you could use these Afghan Cavalry miniatures to represent soldiers from as far back as the Medieval period or even the Modern Day. They work really well for the period of 1830s-1920 though if you're seeking to use them as they come in the plastic set.

Good review. Not convinced of the sculpting quality compared to Perry say but they are cheap.
