    The Hudson River is a 315-mile (507 km) river that flows from north to south primarily through eastern New York in the United States. The river originates in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York, flows through the Hudson Valley, and eventually drains into the Atlantic Ocean, between New York City and Jersey City. The river serves as a political boundary between the states of New Jersey and New York, and further north between New York counties. The lower half of the river is a tidal estuary occupying the Hudson Fjord, which formed during the most recent period of North American glaciation, estimated at 26,000 to 13,300 years ago. Tidal waters influence the Hudson's flow from as far north as Troy.
    The river is named after Henry Hudson, an Englishman sailing for the Dutch East India Company, who explored it in 1609, and after whom Canada's Hudson Bay is also named. It had previously been observed by Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano sailing for King Francis I of France in 1524, as he became the first European known to have entered the Upper New York Bay, but he considered the river to be an estuary. The Dutch called the river the North River - with the Delaware River called the South River - and it formed the spine of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. Settlements of the colony clustered around the Hudson, and its strategic importance as the gateway to the American interior led to years of competition between the English and the Dutch over control of the river and colony.

    The Hudson Highlands is perhaps the most beautiful area of the Hudson River. I love watching the scenery from a window as I ride on a Metro-North train along the river.

    To me, this is one of the most beautiful parts of the world. That could because I grew up in this part of New York State. Up until my early 20's, I lived within a half mile or less of the beautiful Hudson River. I never get tired of seeing this kind of scenery. Thank you for this.

    Some great photography here! Please remember that Hudson didn't "discover"the Hudson River. It was already here, with Native Americans living in this area. It was new to Europeans but not to the people who already lived here. (:

    Grew up in NYC and vacationed in the Hudson Valley/Northern Catskills many times. Loved coming over to this side of the Hudson and take the Taconic rather than the NYS Thruway. Longer but much more relaxing and scenic.

    You need to drive from Newburgh,NY along the west side of the Hudson River, especially along Storm King Mountain and West Point/Highland Falls to the Bear Mountain Bridge. You might also try the Ferry Boat ride between Newburgh and Beacon as a side trip. The ferry stop in Beacon happens to be where the Commuter trains from NYC also stop, so it could be an interesting day trip as well.

    lovely video abounding with oh-my-God-memories I spent 4 years in Briarcliff Manor and so my ineffable fondness for anything to do with this iconic river Meanwhile where is River Road exactly.
    in many ways it resembles the other River Road Route 32 that hugs that other miracle river The Delaware as it winds northward from New Hope. That River Road also merits a video fully due its intimate splendor. The Hudson is Grand in the classic transcendental sense but the Delaware abounds with ever beckoning intimacy. At my age 74 I am convinced Scenery is God's other book!

    I was watching Don McLean of American Pie fame talking about this lyrics of his song and then spoke of moving to Hudson Valley after he became famous. That all that he needed was a nice home, a good woman and horse in order to live the rest of his days looking at castles along the Hudson Valley. It made me want to hop on a plane here in Honolulu and go there...

      Especially around New Paltz (Huguenot Street homes from original Dutch settlers) or in Orange County near Pine Island and the be as beautiful Black Dirt farms. Near Walden, NY is the Angry Orchard Brewery which is open to the public for tours, as well as many local wineries in the immediate area. That includes the oldest winery in America in Washingtonville, NY.

    Just take the MTA train on the Hudson line from Grand Central to Poughkeepsie on weekends for $20 round trip. Or, if you want to o north from there take the Amtrack train up through Glen's Falls.

    The correct geographic term is Estuary, not fjord.

      That part of the river valley is " mid Hudson valley " !! Not upstate like everyone calls it.

    • @VirtualRoadTrip
      @VirtualRoadTrip  6 років тому

      I think it's both. To me anything north of the Hudson Highlands is considered upstate. People from other parts of the state have different definitions.

      Virtual Road Trip
      People in NYC think anything north of Gun Hill Road in the Bronx is upstate. To us in the Hudson Highlands "upstate" begins around Albany and points northward.
