  • John Bailey, ASC served as camera operator to Academy Award-winning cinematographer Néstor Almendros, ASC, AFC on DAYS OF HEAVEN. Both Almendros and Bailey had to leave before filming concluded, due to prior commitments, and Haskell Wexler, ASC took over.

Wexler is my hero, after shooting & directing 60 tv docs, they hired him as second unit Director/DP, not just camera operator....he did all fantastic close-ups and fire scenes...

This is great! I love this film and anything related to the work of Néstor Almendros; Haskell is such an interesting character and he is sharing really good information in this video. Thank you for uploading this content!

In his highly informative and readable autobiography, 'A Man With A Camera', Nestor Almendros talks at length about the shooting of 'Days of Heaven', and is highly complimentary about Haskell's contribution. It is well worth a read, covering not only his cinematographic techniques but also the difficulties he faced in convincing certain crew members that he really didnt need most of the contents of the lighting truck to achieve his desired look, when a sheet of styrofoam often sufficed. Mallik, obviously on Almendros's wavelength, told him on one occasion that even that was too much for a contre-jour medium c/u.

And Wexler talking down the crew is bullshit. The hold up was because Terry never knew what the fuck he wanted. We shot miles of film that could not be used because they were wild improv departures from his script. We had actors arriving every week with NO ROLE - just so Terry could dick around. We busted our ass on that movie. Bert Schneider had to mortgage his house to cover the weeks we went over.
BTW, we lucked out with the snow - it was an early snow that only lasted about a day.
