Read somewhere that old soldiers used to say firing a PIAT qualified you for the Victoria Cross...that said, it did work, just not as well as advertised
After taking out 7 tanks including 3 Tiger tanks the same officer also held off an armoured brigade when he and his men only had Bren guns then he led them to safety, that was why he was awarded the Victoria Cross. It worked better than advertised. Obviously the PIAT was used when there were no 6 pounder or 17 pounder anti tank guns ready or available. I notice the PIAT came on top of a list of the most effective infantry weapons followed by the Bren gun.
Because you had to get close enough to the tank that you could be killed by hitting the tank with a PIAT, which since you're already that close wouldn't a Sticky Bomb work better anyway?
Doesn’t get enough love. The lack of backblast was huge. I’m sure the recoil sucked, but so did the recoil on antitank rifles. I’m sure it sucked to reload, but so did crossbows, and I’m sure soldiers of the Middle Ages who had to use them complained just as loudly.
The PIAT was apparently effective, but it was also not user friendly. I have fired the 3.5 inch "bazooka", and it was accurate, effective, and easy to operate. True, it was a crew served weapon system, but that second man came in very handy when it came to carrying more ammo.
@@jerryjeromehawkins1712; the PIAT and Bazooka were contemporaries, both coming out in 1942, and although I have never fired a PIAT, I think I would rather carry a Bazooka. It only weighed 12.75 pounds and had virtually no recoil.
The piat played a vital role in operation Pegasus. It destroyed an enemy tank and blocked the road and thus saved the paratroopers from armored assaults

When the smoke cleared he was laying prone on the ground and took out the tracks. Like I say I highly recommend that documentary it's been years since I've watched it

Fusilier Frank Jefferson of the Lancashire Fusiliers, was awarded the VC for actions at Monte Cassino, in which he fired a PIAT from the hip and knocked out a German Tiger whilst under a hail of enemy fire, he reloaded while on the run and forced a second German tank to withdraw. 3:48 The problem of just the initial cocking and ammo reliability? Didn't the PIAT also have the tendency of failing to recock the spring if it wasn't properly braced when firing, causing a failure to recock?
although often maligned in Canadians Under Fire: Infantry Effectiveness in the Second World War (2009) by Robert Engen. He examined the Battlefield Experience questionnaires of the over 150 Canadian officers who participated. PIAT on page 122: "The PIAT was listed in seventy-four surveys as being 'outstandingly effective' far more than any other weapon. Its effectiveness was due not only to its tank-killing role, but also to the fact that its high-explosive bomb could be put to unconventional good use against 'soft' infantry targets, either in direct or indirect roles, making it a good source of suppressing fire. Furthermore, only three officers listed the PIAT as being an 'ineffective' weapon." The PIAT was even more highly thought of than the Bren, which was second at 54 surveys…which surprised me. when looking at the combat records they indicate that like any Man Portable Anti-Tank system it had flaws but it was actually significantly more effective than it's contemporise although as a design it was probably an evolutionary dead end and it wasn't as upgradable as rocket based systems..

It was an incredible tank killer. Because of the extremely sophisticated shaped charge (similar to modern bunker busting cruise missiles) the PIAT was by far the most effect anti-tank weapon of its time, vastly more lethal than anything the Russians, Germans or Americans could field. What is more, it could (and often did) take out a Tiger Tank - something that was far beyond the ability of its rivals. Kill ratio was excellent because most kills were scored from less than 25 meters and no back blast or muzzle flash so ideal for firing undetected. Sergeant Major Thornton at Pegasus Bridge turned back a column of German Panzer's with a PIAT. Major Robert Henry Cain, won a Victoria Cross for knocking out 6 tanks (4 of which were essentially invincible Tiger tanks) using a PIAT initially. As I remember it, he hid in shop doorways and stepped out to hit the Tigers from point blank as they drove by. During the D Day landings the PIAT knocked out 7% of German tanks - compared to 6% for rockets fired by aircraft. The PIAT remained in service until Korea and was used effectively by the Israelis in the Arab war. The Canadians ranked it as the best weapon with the Bren at a close second. Like many classic British weapons of the time (e.g. the STEN) they could be made in vast quantities cheaply so production could easily be scaled up and the PIAT didn't require any replacement parts due to wear from the blast.
So i am sitting here playing games on my Playstation while listening to this show and the internet cuts out on my phone and all i hear is : ''british were equiped with the boys''

@@supmodel so what? Leave em alone
@@samuel19085 again, so what? Also you can't say anything, you have a game character as your pfp
@@samuel19085 gamers are just toxic people. What are you? Some irrelevant guy or girl who names himself after a video game character on the internet because he has no original ideas, judging people he never met.

I like how there were only ~1200 Tiger 1's yet it is so well known and there were 110,000 PIAT's and it is very unknown
One british solder uses piat to destroy 187 tanks in less than 15 seconds out of 998 crew in the panzers 4 wounded panzerwaffe crew lived the next day the British solder said the piat sucks it did not kill everyone
"It was very cheap" 60 AMMUNITIONS, 60.
2:53 the panzerfaust was a recoilless gun, not a rocket launcher
pippo spano I expected better from Simple history.. he confused the Panzerfaust with the Panzerschreck
Panzerfaust is not a Rocket launcher, it is a recoilless rifle as it does not have rocket motor.
PIAT:I’m the best anti-tank weapon of WW2.
Panzerschreck:Hold my beer.
Indeed a bazooka copy.
Stolen.
Hey I can't believe warthunder sponsored one of my favorite channel wow I've been playing warthunder so many times!
Nice video and I was wondering if you guys could do a video about to Persian empire? 👌
So i am sitting here playing games on my Playstation while listening to this show and the internet cuts out on my phone and all i hear is : ''british were equiped with the boys''
'Me, the boys and the British infantry at 2AM looking for Germans.'
4:16 that guy is mega suicidal
Fun fact:
Not all early war Anti-Tank rifles were obsolete. The Polish wz. 35 "Ur" was a rifle that could destroy every tank in the early stages of the war.
Russian: Blyat
Brittish: Piat
Me: *thinking about my stupidity*
leiser mörder yes yes comrades this is the effects of vodka
