@@daveyjaxx Totally! It affected me when I was Catholic… really awful. I would feel so guilty if I forgot to says my Hail Marys and Our Fathers before bedtime! Luckily it went away completely when I became an atheist. From Wikipedia: “In psychology, scrupulosity is pathological guilt or anxiety about moral or religious matters… It is typically conceptualized by psychologists as a moral or religious form of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).”

I am so sorry that so many people have been hurt by Bill Gothard. I was effected by Gothard's teachings, but it was through the Christian school I attended. These teachings were not in my home. The principal tried to bully my Dad into using this teaching in the home (LOL). My Dad came out of the principal's office, got in the car, looked at me, & said "That guy is not right in the head. You stick with me". I was 12 at the time. I am now in my 50s. I worry about this guy's NOW adult children!

thtt is a red flag on how you know a belief system or govt or any group is false or patriarchal or communistic. they do not allow for opposing views and shut down any questioning of their agenda or rules.
a truly free group will allow discourse and not try to hide the faults or problems in the group but try to fix them
the same goes for patriarchal abusive men in the church...they get caught and fight like hell to keep their position
but a true pastor will admit his sins, fault, step down and seek help

Great parenting techniques like love and Logic don't use fear or spanking and they do start early on a child learning ways to handle emotions in a more healthy way. No way a 4 yr old will control emotions, but they do start learning this action has this consequence and that things like tantrums will drain the energy of those around you and they have the choice of doing things like screaming and crying in their room and taking the time to calm down (which is their way of working toward controlling their emotions) or breaking clear boundaries and choosing the consequences.

Hey guys. There was no strict interpretation of the scriptures in the Gothard cult. It was all proof text. You read through the literature that he would explain the concept. The concept was laid out very specifically. And you look for the scripture and it be out of Ecclesiastes or some other obscure verse. I had to go to Gothard as a child and in my 20s I went. I wasn’t anything like you guys, so close to him. I was an independent Baptist (we had our own cult).

I love this channel! You guys make me reminisce on my life in Mormonism (back in the day when it was a lot stricter). When I was 16 years old (in 2000) the way to tell if a girl had good character was to see if she followed the prophet's instruction that year that girls shouldn't wear more than one set of earrings. Later, in college, I heard an inspiring story about a young man who "did the wise thing" and broke off a relationship with a girl because he knew she'd heard the prophet's sermon and after weeks had gone by she still was wearing two sets of earrings! By mandate, Mormons have a photo of their current prophet in every bishop's office and in their primary (children's ministry) in every church house worldwide, like communists displaying the image of their leader everywhere. The children sing the song "Follow the prophet [repeated 3 times] Don't go a astray. Follow the prophet … [repeated 3 times] He knows the way!" In one of your videos you mentioned that if you hugged a girl while you were in the institute you'd get sent home, and that made me burst out laughing because that's what my Mormon mission was like! One hug, though it probably wouldn't have gotten me sent home, would have at least gotten me "emergency transferred" the next day to another city. Thanks for not trash talking Christianity on your channel, by the way. Every cult forbids people from fact-checking their "prophet" against Scripture.

FYI the baby plush is of a conservative talk show host. He's made them to make fun of people who he sees as easily offended. It tells you all you need to know about her as someone who believes that she and other fundamentalist Christians are the only ones who can ever be truly persecuted and that no one is ever a victim to any tangible degree. Also you do not want one of his plush dolls, he is a genuinely horrible human being who does not need nor deserve your money.

As a single mom I never hit my kids - I nutured them with love, respect and communication, and they are well adjusted adults today. Your Christianity should be how you love and respect all those around you - not in a church.

I know where she is coming from. You have her completely right in saying she is seeing what she wants to see and ignores all else. I know because I have a sister with the same mindset. She does have it right that the problem starts with Gothard being a god. I was raised as a Christian and I was taught that people are inherently imperfect so to worship a person (or an organization) is wrong. What is sad is people with that mindset come away with conclusions that makes all Christians look bad. My sister actually watched the shiny happy people documentary (I was shocked she watched it) Her take away was sad that the kids (Jinger and Jill) turned on their parents. Sorry, I don't get it. Then again my sister has never experienced something like that.

Actually, while the documentary did make good but difficult points, I thought the very end was a straight up hit on homeschooling Christian families, even ones who weren't connected with Gothard - I mean, they took a swipe at Patrick Henry College and their congressional intern program, which unlike the Gothard program really has been turning out qualified people and was crowd sourced from homeschooling families that belong to HSLDA, a legal association.
The statement was also made that families with fundamental Christian beliefs - not just IBLP - were all fostering abusers, which made my jaw hit the floor. That was such a sweeping statement and it doesn't make people who watch it treat Christian families too well.
The answer for the abuse shouldn't be turning completely intolerant towards conservative Christians or suggesting they ought to all be suspected of being abusers or looked at with suspicion if they get into public life. Should we look at Muslim families that way and kick the women with headscarves out of positions in Congress because "they want to take over the world"?
So yes, I believe there were hit piece elements worked into the documentary.

I was never home schooled but went to a handful of different Christian schools and eventually back to public school. Very different experiences in each one. One of our family friends went his entire junior high and high school to one of the same Christian schools my family attended. He and his brothers turned out to be men of God and one a great pastor. One of the other Christian schools I went to Falls squarely into the category of extremely troubling. Today, I have friends that homeschool and others who teach specific subjects to high schoolers' classes.
Attacking home schools is dishonest and unwarranted.

There is a book from the 90's that has been rereleased called A Matter of Basic Principles Bill Gothard and His Cultish Teachings.
This book exposes the fallacy of Gothard's doctrine (by Christians), Gothard's complete unwillingness to submit to authority or critique (even though his authoritarian teaching ruined generations of lives and caused skewed understanding of Scripture because he was pretty much never in context), and the all out sliminess of his hide and deflect mechanism.
The book is well written from a Christian perspective. It's super helpful to deconstruct or disentangle Gothardism. The rerelease has a forward By Jinger Duggar Vuolo and multiple well respected Christians.
The forward is written by THE Dr. John Cornish.
The authors Don and Joy Veinot, and Ron Henzel absolutely offer an honest look at the IBLP/ATI from a Christian context with Scripture in context.

Rant forthcoming... I could hardly keep watching before typing!
I realize she is entitled to her opinion & fortunately for her, apparently nothing traumatic has happened to her or her family as a result of their religion. That's peachy, but I'm about to gouge both of my eardrums with an ice pick, from just her voice alone.
The following is only my opinion, based on my experiences with being raised Southern Baptist, & my parents attending two Bill Gothard seminars way back when it was called IBYC.
Guess why sexual assault victims in general (& especially children) don't come forward? Because they are subjected to shame, fear, threats, disbelief that anything happened, minimization of the abuse, & covering it up if someone actually realizes the truth. Nicely done with the victim blaming, lady. 😡
Her whataboutism argument concerning bad behavior of people in general is the kind of bs I was surrounded with as a child. It doesn't matter if you're IBLP, Christian, Atheist, Satanist, or Nothing, abuse is wrong, wrong, wrong. But. Evangelical Christians spend a great deal of time & effort convincing their children to trust & obey & to avoid evil, separating themselves from the evil world, & yes, promoting an "overactive conscience," regarding one's own daily accountability to God for their sins, blah blah blah.
In the end, when the evil lives under your umbrella or within your church & the call is coming from inside the house, so to speak, & the same person teaching you about Jesus becomes your abuser, the effects are devastating & so difficult to deconstruct, because it's nearly impossible to untangle the abuse from your "religion." It basically defiles your belief system in God, parents, people in the church, yourself, & the ability to trust in general, all in one fell swoop. As a child or someone raised in a strict, sheltered environment, you don't even have the words or concepts to express what happened. Nor do you have the right to tell anyone. And then, if you do muster up the courage to say something later, you are met with these kinds of attitudes, where people are much more concerned about keeping you quiet than dealing with the predator. That's why everything's dealt with "in house," so that appearances are kept up. Even in prison, amongst criminals, they don't tolerate child abusers. Not so, with The Church. Everything is hushed up & the predators continue to abuse in other churches. I know this from my own experience as well as the reported experiences of others. The fact that it happens elsewhere in the "secular world" as well means nothing in particular, other than the world is a grooming-ground of predatory assholes, regardless of religious affiliation. Churches (& churchy cults) are set up to teach children to trust in God, & by default the ones doing the teaching are seen as authority figures, whether they are called pastors, Sunday School teachers, youth directors, or prophets.
There is a major problem, when it's more important to protect the reputation of the church, or the church-attending predator, than whomever was abused. Think about it, if some already known "unchurchy, worldly" child predator or rapist, suddenly showed up at church, I'm sure the congregation would have quite alot to say about it. But there ARE people you already know & trust in your church (or sometimes in your family) that show up every Sunday, who unbeknownst to you (or perhaps known & hidden) are doing exactly the same things. If it gets brought to your attention, you need to do something about it, no matter who it is. If you report within the church hierarchy & nothing is done, please report to authorities outside the church. If you let it go & move on, they will continue to abuse more victims. If the discussion ends with them having a chat with someone in the church & then asking for forgiveness, they will continue to abuse more victims.
Predators hide in plain sight. It's what they do. BTK, the serial killer & rapist was an animal control officer, a cub scout leader, & a church deacon, & got caught because he was toying with the police & used a computer disk that they traced to his church computer. (Then he was mad at investigators for lying to him about a floppy disk being untraceable. 🙄) This horrid excuse for a human considers himself a lifelong church going Christian who occasionally conveniently got taken over by a demon, when it suited his narcissistic, sick evil fantasy. His family was as shocked as the rest of country. No one expects their friend, father, husband, youth director, priest, or "prophet" to be a sexual predator, but sometimes they just are.
Sorry for the tangent... I've been dealing with this shit my entire life & I get fed up. Believe me, I am well aware of my own faults & mistakes. More than once I thought I could no longer live with wearing the shame & guilt from the sins of others, but thankfully I am still here. So yes, a great deal of my trauma came from my religion & at the hands of religious people, including my mother & father. I am accountable for my own "sins," but I refuse to keep being blamed for theirs.

This had the makings of an interesting discussion. Unfortunately, Davey is too enamored with listening to his own voice. I would have loved to hear more, much more, on this subject from Brice. Davey so often interrupted him, and spoke over him, that Brice couldn’t even finish a comment or elaborate on his point. Davey said little that added to the subject; for the most part he reiterated how outraged he was or tried to complete Brice’s thoughts. My first time watching, and I’m sorry I couldn’t listen to much more than half of it. The video would be much improved if Davey spent the majority of his time listening and thinking and considerably less time interjecting and interrupting.

This was an unfortunate video that really revealed more about Davey than the woman.
She apparently bumped up against tte outside of this movement while Dave and his co-host seem to have been coerced or forced to go through the mill.
She took a take it or leave it approach to the IBYC materials and these men were subjects of the hammermill compliance method. And obviously it was ugly.
I didn't think what she had to say was all that bad. In fact a few things she said we're just fine. His response could have been a simple "obviously her experience with them was not anywhere near as deep or damaging as mine. She did not see or live what i lived."
Instead, he goes on long rants about how he knows exactly what she's thinking or feeling when she doesn't say the things that he says she is thinking. She must be dishonest or is abusing her husband, we all know who is in charge in that house. Right!? You do?
His name calling and attempted character assassination was unnecessary.
He is determined to paint her as a nutcase or much worse. In very similar fashion to how the supposed IBYC cult paints everyone who disagrees with them as being in rebellion to god and demonic.
He may be free from the cults control, but he is still practicing what they preached.
Saddest part is i would venture to say both of these men's continued pain is that they both wanted to be good. As kids they needed the approval of those running what they now see as a serious schit show. And they were put through some heinous stuff for their troubles while trying to measure up in a system run by the inmates instead of competent adults.
Hopefully for them and anyone else trying to recover they find real comfort and healing. I have to believe its still possible.

@thecultchronicles I used to go to Bill Gothard Basic Youth conflicts seminars every year when they were held in Portland, Oregon. My entire church was involved in these meetings and promoting his teachings. We never got beyond the seminars and some related materials the church could take home and study. The basic seminar was probably instrumental in keeping my parents from getting divorced. They learned to understand each other and were able to work together instead of budding heads all the time. His general teaching greatly improved our family relationships. His larger books are still somewhere in my parents' home.
That being said, my experience predates when things went off the rails by a few years.
Up until watching this and other videos on the subject, I had no idea all of the weird painful things that happened with the people who went to live in his commune. They obviously went sideways big time.
As to these two men, their parents failed them. This group obviously abused the authority they had in their lives.
But they are also not all better now that they have escaped and gotten free from that group. He explains how the authorities over them manipulated everything they said and did to meet The Narrative they were pushing against these two teenagers. The short version of the leadership's accusation was either you agree with us and obey or you are bad.
In the video, it appears to me that these two are doing the exact same thing when discussing this woman as was done to them. Because she had a different experience and doesn't wholeheartedly condemn the group as they do, she is either a loonie or she is just plain evil. They seem very comfortable applying the same practices against her as they were applied against themselves. The group sat in judgment against these young men, and now they are passing judgment against her.
I believe everyone myself included not just these two can get stuck and do not know how to get truly healed & free.
Pain unforgiveness and bitterness poison every heart until there can be repentance and forgiveness. I believe that Jesus, through the power of the Holy Spirit, can make us whole healing every heart. My previous comment and this one is not just to these men but to anyone who still finds themselves still slimed by the sins of others against them in the past.
I have found a measure of freedom from the horrors I endured in the past through active repentance and forgiveness by the ministry of the Holy Spirit in Christ Jesus. My hope is that others will find the same and even more freedom.
