SMW2: Yoshi’s Island, where every time you complete a world, the music adds more instruments. And has been done in some Mario games over the years. Such as Mario Galaxy 1, Galaxy 2, Color Splash, and this game. ^_^

You know this progression.. as it progresses it turns into the main theme and made me realise something...
Its like a tree without leaves! The first few versions bring out the hard to realise sounds and as you move forward you get the sounds you would first encounter when hearing it for the first few secs! Just like a growing tree!
And paper comes from trees....

Maybe because you are quite often reminded of it while playing. The main theme Leitmotif is used like everywhere and you might have heard it more times than you think. It could be to a similar effect as the Undertale OST which infamously uses Leitmotifs everywhere. Even though the game is now actually already old enough for people to be nostalgic about it, many people became attached to the OST shortly after release too.
I love how as you progress through the game and save more and more Toads and destroy more streamers, the song changing really feels like the town is becoming full and lively again, and I think that this effect is really awesome. I really enjoyed Origami King.

I'm working on a project where I'm doing something a bit similar so I thought I'd take notes! I'll post them here if anyone's interested! I might've missed a couple things so chime in if you'd like!
Toad Town 0
- Empty
- Marimba
- Accordion
- Recorder
- Very toy-like
Toad Town Red
- Piano added to make the theme feel a bit more lively, filling in bits with full, bouncy chords along with adding to or taking over the melody in some places
- Very light use of drum set, all on the cymbal
Toad Town Blue
- More woodwinds added to the melody, playing off of each other
- The original recorder is removed, the theme is more “full” than ever before but still not quite “lived-in” yet
Toad Town Yellow
- There’s that rockestra feel!
- The full drum kit and electric bass jumps in here. There’s also a lil’, tiny bit of electric guitar.
- The piano now has more power than before, especially in the lower registers and there’s even a breakdown section with the piano as the spotlight as a little reminder of where we once came from.
- The kick of the drum really drives the tune in some places here
Toad Town Purple
- STRINGS!! Here they’re filling in all the gaps in-between and really making this version pop out into your face to show how far you’ve come.
- There’s also a bit of choir behind everything to make the theme really feel epic.
- The piano part is unchanged since the last and I think that’s wonderful :)
Toad Town Green
- The strings pick up some of the melody here
- The electric guitar is now in full swing and can really be heard now!
- There are also some pretty cool synths in there!
- The whole shabang
- The piano part is now doubled with a harpsichord but still very small, homey, and nostalgic
You forgot that the Accordion is also given more power in Yellow
This theme was built for nostalgia, calling it right now.

I can tell that I'm going to the right direction when the music gets much more vibrant in the town.
One of the games that did this is Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Maker 2
Yoshi's Island Did This Too.
Splatoon 2 also did this in octo expansion and Champaign mode. More you progress, the more the "level select areas" will continually build in music score.
It is a very clever thing of nintendo.
Super Kirby Clash
Mario kart wii, 7 and 8 (deluxe) also did this with the menu's
The amount of variation and layering on this OST with all the streamer variants is mind-blowing.
Just put up a piano cover of this one, stuck mostly to the OG theme but added a couple flourishes from the red streamer removal variation!
I love how the flute player has always been present in every alliteration of the theme. It’s like the musician has always been there from the very beginning, watching you slowly restoring the town to its former glory. Even in the final alliteration, where the flute gets overwhelmed from the other instruments you can still hear it if you listen hard enough. From start to end, this musician will always be there, playing that flute for all to hear.
this is not about paper mario but still kinda related: In the concept art book for mario odyssey there's a scrapped concept for an "evolving musician NPC" in new donk city. it was supposed to be a kid NPC that you could help pick an instrument for or something like that, and as you progressed trough the game past that point, if you went back to new donk city, the NPC would be practicing the instrument, slowly getting better at it, and eventually when you finish the game he would master the instrument and appear playing different mario songs and soloing over the NDC music.
I just thought that was kinda sweet and wanted to share it. it's a shame it didn't get to be in the game but i can understand why.
I love how it’s completely empty then as you progress more and more toads come back and it feels like you built it back up
I loved the bagpipes in the final version. It really got me dancing and I started to envision myself visiting Toad Town

Y'know each theme sorta means some progress is still left. For instance: After Red Streamer has a recorder with it, Its like Nintendo knows the recorder memes and wants to do the opposite, giving it a good impression yet also showing some of the meme's definition by saying that Toad Town still has work to be done. And then more orchestral instruments come in, making toad town seem more lively. Also, gotta love how they inspired that from color splash and Sticker Star (Sorta), among many.. other rehashed inspirations.
To this date still one of the most memorable progressive city themes of any game.
I love how the music changes the more and more you progress.. it adds just that level of detail
It’s so beautiful how, as you save toads, destroy streamers, and progress through the game, the music builds up and gains instruments to turn into a majestic theme. Definitely one of my favorite things in this game’s music, it feels great.
just finished this game. I enjoyed it but personally Color Splash left a more lasting impression on me. That being said I really enjoyed all of the paper mario games.

I'm gonna comment on this video again, the theme after the green streamer gives me the vibe of...we've reached a happy ending, we saved everyone, everyone is happy. You meet your friends, your family, you have a nostalgic reunion. Sometimes I'd cry on that theme because of how strong that vibe is

My opinions on each version:
Before red: this plays when you're relaxing in your home happy by yourself.
After red: you're relaxing at home with your mom / dad / both parents, spending time with them while having fun.
After blue: You're in a family that loves different music and you're playing various instruments with your family including your possible siblings.
After yellow: you're having fun in various ways with your friends whether they are at school, at your house, or you're at theirs.
After purple: you're spending happy times with your family and your friends on a cruise or by the beach.
After green: you're together with your girlfriend / boyfriend, friends and family, including your siblings and cousins along with your aunts, uncles, and grandparents exploring the world wherever your lives take you never being far apart as you and everyone you love will always be together.
I remember visiting toad town right after the yellow streamer and just being awed at how a desolate place could become so beautiful. Easily the best new entry in the series
The music of this game got me through my exams last year. And now, listening to it again makes me happier than I have been in months. I love this game so much.
At first I only noticed the middle segments. After a few runs I finally decided to clear all the Paper Machos immediately, and was pretty happy a semblance of the proper music began. Similarly, I had never stayed around long enough to here the full post-green theme, and I'm just as happy for that! A lot of effort went into this area, and it shows well!

If your looking for extended versions of certain tracks in this, then the first one is Ghost Toad Town and the last 5 follow the streamer pattern(1-5)
The Goomba never got a chance to see a toad. and those other Goombas are probably still hiding in the closet
If you revisit that house, they become roommates with the toad.

Toad town in trouble is basically when everyone is staying home because of the pandemic, and these themes are basically as more people start going outside because of the pandemic slowly passing by.
You know, these likely would have been the World Map themes if this game _had_ a World Map.

The title theme and version 6 of Toad Town are listed as separate songs in the OST. I'm not sure if they actually are the *exact* same but I included it just to be safe
the last one is different the choir is a higher pitch and the guitar is a different kind and theres more notes

I know people would be hard-pressed to call this the best Paper Mario unlike the original 2000s trilogy prior to the disastrous Sticker Star; but from what I’d argue, this Switch installment at least did something better than its two predecessors in comparison albeit (again) not anywhere near on par with the original 2000s trilogy at the end of the day.
While Origami King was a bit lacking in the Paper Mario Department (I still loved it to death though), you have to admit no matter what, Paper Mario games have a good soundtrack.
