Talking about targeting the specific muscle groups through an excersize, you are 100% right. In CrossFit, events are usually timed, so it's important to get through an excersize as efficient as possible (i.e. kipping/butterfly pull-ups). With these techniques: Instead of using only their lats and triceps for the pull-up, they're using their whole body, keeping the intensity high and cardio up. It's not meant to be a strict pull-up, and comparing the 2 is missing the point of the excersize.
One thing I have noticed about this sport and watching some of the successful amateurs is they certain build you have to have. 5'10 to 6' foot any taller you struggle in some of the lifts. 210-215, if you are any lighter you struggle in the lifts, if you are heavier you struggle in the cardiovascular type events. Rich Froning is the ideal size and weight for crossfit to even have a chance. Of course his work ethic, stamina, and intelligence allows him to deserve what he received.
I'm so psyched for Khalipa and Fisher. Jason did great this year and Fisher did fantastic. Both are such nice guys as well. Big ups to Fronig on the 3 peat... I have no idea how he's so fanatically disciplined on his form even at the end of some of these workouts. I dig the fact that these guys are all pretty class.
people make fun of cross fit, there is nothing easy about 240 dead lift, pistol squats in general, handstand walks, handstand push ups. strength and endurance is just crazy here
HayesPlays XBL LMAO a HSPU doesn't prove anything. but what is proven is the fact that cross fit is a fucking Money Scheme... They don't give a fuck about what is healthy or good for you. They take your money and push you through their "workout". Its been proven that it causes Rhabdomyolysis. Workout normally, with a determined mind and you will accomplish your goals without damaging your body.
So many haters. Essentially, CrossFit is like a race with an obstacle course. The goal is to get to the finish line first. Don't compare CrossFit to how much you can lift or how strong you are because it's like comparing apples to oranges. Two different things. And referring bad form to kipping isn't entirely fair. Again the main goal isn't strength or aesthetics. However, doing the Olympic lifts with bad form is another thing, but based on what I see from the top tier athletes in this sport, they have some pretty damn good form. I'm not a fan boy. I just understand what their goals are and respect the amount of hard work they put in. I'm not ignorant.
I don't know for sure, but I don't think there's a strict standard for deficit handstand pushups. As for pullups, they're doing kipping pullups which are a different movement than strict pullups (what you consider "pullups"). The crossfit standard for pullups is arms fully extended to chin over the bar. Kipping is the most efficient to accomplish that. These guys could do as many strict pullups as other athletes. When it's timed event, however, you're going to do whatever takes less time.
this is the real deal...they push themselves to exhaustion and then stay there for the whole event.....this is harder than anything I have ever done...and I've been working out in kickboxing, karate, spin, boot camp, etc.. for 20 years. I'm also an ex-marine and this is insane pain...but I live for it and love it...If you talk the talk then walk the walk....
I suppose that waiter is a crossfitter currently working on his speed and agility. You know, basically everyone, even you, is a crossfitter with or at a certain level of skill and component of fitness. Even though, Ritchie wins these competitions of high octane fitness level, there is nothing stopping you to find out for yourself how broadly fit you currently are. Fitness is broad, not specific. Xfit is the love on improving weak skills and fitness components. Remember you are a crossfitter too.
They have catagories: cardio;running, swimming, biking, rowing strength;oly lifts and major lifts along with some dumbell variations and kettlebell movements. Then gymnastics, burpees, muscle ups pulls up dips handstand walks and push ups. They always throw in something they know no one is training for to introduce variability, I know there was alreayd a ton of it lol, this year it was the pig a 500/300 pound box they had to flip 100 yards(men/women's weight and not exact i know) and the wall
In the heat with Neil Maddox he had to go back and make sure both hands touched across the line on the handstand walk. When Rich did the same thing he didn't get a 'no rep.' I love crossfit but the judging inconsistencies make it a bit unfair in competition.
I need to go back and watch it again, but if I recall correctly I think maddox had his feet touch down on the walkway instead of past it, when froning clearly has both feet outside the walkway. I remember seeing the same thing and the feet placement I think was the difference there.
are there any weightclasses? it´s a little bit unfair to compare a 170lbs with one over 200. i think it would be better to let the weight of the bars depends on the weight of the competetor. so you can better see which one ist the all around athlet. sorry for my bad english
No, there arent, but thats the beauty of it... bigger guys may lift more but they can struggle in the bodyweight movements... shorter guys can excel at these movements but they will strugle lifting heavyweights. You cant focus on one single thing without lacking in other areas, thats what i like about training for crossfit competitions.
it's not about who is the strongest it's about who is the fittest.. they also run, swim, climb, deathlift, pull ups, olympic lifts... like its says FITTEST man on earth.. and it's not only americans who are in the games.. there are canadians, austrailans,..
Art Major Please tell me you're kidding? Not only is crossfit pretty much only done in the US (not the whole planet), but he's not even close to being the fittest guy on the planet. Put him up against pretty much any distance runner or professional cyclist in a fitness test and he'd get his arse handed to him.
I've always been of the belief that whoever the best decathlon athlete is at the time, is the fittest man/women in the world. Crossfit includes a lot of highly technical movements that are more about skill than about fitness. Just my opinion though. I do believe that the crossfit games winner is certainly a contender for the "fittest on earth" title. It all depends on what you consider "fit" to be.
jagclarke well i agree I think "fittest on Earth" is for marketing purposes but, put that cyclist or distance runner in a strength test and you think they'll still beat rich?
No, because if that is all they can do, they do not fit the description of "fittest". Fittest involves a combination of strength, balance, agility, stamina. Arm walk tests a number of those factors, thus it should be included.
The issue with people who have tried CS is trying to maintain form while lifting heavy weights in very quick successions. It's a great idea to keep fit but seriously the injuries associated with it is not worth it
what kind of cardiovascular function dose theses athletes have? in terms of lung capacity and vo2? Since I am an endurance athlete my golden standard for fitness will always be leading cross country skiers.
between 60 and 70. Not high like alpine(80>) but thats because its short therm endurance mostly. By the way cross country skiers are firmly affected by the environment. So don't feel sorry for yourself because training in low pressure environment with less oxygen creates VO2s like 90.
Anyone is free to attempt to compete in the games, to compete in the open then regionals so if anyone wants to come in and prove their fitter then they can do so
I understand this is fitness at its best, This people train so hard, but when expectations dont come it become a sour loser! I hope they would continue this and think as a fitness not a sort of other intentions!
Nearly everybody cheats at some point during their training, these guys don't claim to be superhuman but we must appreciate what they are capable of and their all round abilities, I don't do crossfit but I believe to be a better rounded athlete we can all learn a lot from all sportsmen/women and their respective disciplines.
who says what is right or wrong ...this guys are moving naturally with their entire body...they are not just using a few specific muscles to move a weight which is very artificial
It's not about the workout.. it's about the competition. Everyone is allowed that same rules, so what's the problem? It's 405 pounds.. 5 times.. after squats.. 3 rounds.. lol?
Don't confuse traditional Olympic powerlifting rules and techniques with crossfit's style. Most techniques used in crossfit wouldn't be permitted in a pwoerlifting competition, but the goal of crossfit is not a 1 rep max.
exactly. When they do Olympic movements for a 1 rep max, the judges are super critical on form. And idon't care who you are, 405 pound deadlift is gonna be heavy as hell whether you bounce it or not.
impressive, however if i'm not chasing a ball, getting some serious tackles on the field and sticking my face into a ruck, it does not feel like i'm competing in a sport, just a day at the gym...
bouncing the deadlift barbell seems more efficient but I feel like that weight would kill my back personally XD guess that's why I'm not competing with those guys hahah
Kids are much stronger in comparison than full grown men. They don't give the title for just walking on your hands, so no you shouldn't give those kids the title.
phirephaxL You're right in both respects. The post I was responding to was generalizing the crossfit games in relation to strongman, and my response was to re-tool the original statement to hold crossfit in a slightly more positive light.
Talking about targeting the specific muscle groups through an excersize, you are 100% right.

I can watch this again and again. Amazing!

FITTEST MEN ON EARTH!!!!!
I take nothing away from gymnasts, but this is endurance, strength..... all the ingredients for the worlds fittest man!
Jack of all trades, master of none.
phirephaxL correct, but being a jack of all trades is often more useful than specializing
First time I've seen this stuff. it's pretty cool!
Strong as hell and fit dudes every one of them!
people make fun of cross fit, there is nothing easy about 240 dead lift, pistol squats in general, handstand walks, handstand push ups. strength and endurance is just crazy here
ok fanboy. :D
Real spit man i joined CF and its the hardest thing to do but it helps you become a better athlete in the hardest workouts
p nut i wanna see you do ONE HSPU.
HayesPlays XBL LMAO a HSPU doesn't prove anything. but what is proven is the fact that cross fit is a fucking Money Scheme... They don't give a fuck about what is healthy or good for you. They take your money and push you through their "workout". Its been proven that it causes Rhabdomyolysis. you're making shit up now, there is NOTHING unhealthy abt crossfit.
So many haters. Essentially, CrossFit is like a race with an obstacle course. The goal is to get to the finish line first. fuck, my knee hurts watching those squats, holy man.
Rich Froning is a beast !! 3 time champ ! Shows how hard he works !!
Hi is The King of Crossfit..Rich Froooooooooooooniiiiig ..yas baby ;)
ako rahim...
I don't know for sure, but I don't think there's a strict standard for deficit handstand pushups. Such an awesome win!! Thanks for posting this.
Thanks, loved the praise
The toughest sports i have ever seen in my life...these guys are awesome
Crossfit is the scientology of fitness.
Thats right
The guy is a beast! Respect.
Well, I'm impressed now after watching this segment. Walking lunges with 165lbs overhead is remarkable! These guys are all supermen.
arm strength...well done you are another crossfit goon
I think the craziest part of this is how Rich can turn it on after like 5 days of non stop workouts. He's not human.
its a lot more healthier, you look better, and its the new hip thing that if you're really good you can make a lot of money when this sport takes off.
this is the real deal...they push themselves to exhaustion and then stay there for the whole event.....this is harder than anything I have ever done...and I've been working out in kickboxing, karate, spin, boot camp, etc.. for 20 years. how many days do they compete for all these different events? each day one event ?
Rich is a stand up guy. Great competitor and he isn't a sore winner.
In the heat with Neil Maddox he had to go back and make sure both hands touched across the line on the handstand walk. When Rich did the same thing he didn't get a 'no rep.' I love crossfit but the judging inconsistencies make it a bit unfair in competition.

Have you ever done them?
What is the model wearing glasses Rich?
He's a badass, that's what he is! I notices the same thing, though.
oakley batwolf i guess
Make this video available on mobile!
man i see a lot of black folks! STRONG
i had to read your name.

walking hands after 405lbs deadlift and 53lbs one legged squat. are skinny guy can do that?
games 2013 - best games (events, contestants ets...)
Who makes those kettle bells?
Rich Froning makes everything look easy and every form count!
He is strong as FUCK!
I love how the commentators are like "fittest man on the planet"
Because he is?
Art Major
Please tell me you're kidding? Not only is crossfit pretty much only done in the US (not the whole planet), but he's not even close to being the fittest guy on the planet. froning use oakley sunglasses right ?? model ? anyone ? batwolf ?
No, because if that is all they can do, they do not fit the description of "fittest". Fittest involves a combination of strength, balance, agility, stamina. Arm walk tests a number of those factors, thus it should be included.
What song is playing at the start of cinco 2?
Hi, could someone tell me which gloves brand they have? Thx
I saw mechanix gloves on quite a few of them, don't know the others.
kahrpistols Soldiers also use those gloves to shoot. They're good gloves for wear and tear
reebok/rogue/...
hola a todos, Rich Froning muy pero muy piola el chico admiro la solaridad y el corazón, saludos a todos.
How does one 'train' for this considering you have no idea what the actual events are? Do you at least have a list of items you know it could be?
Those kettlebells look sick!
lo maximo froning!!!!
Rich made 11 one-legged squat in the last round!
The issue with people who have tried CS is trying to maintain form while lifting heavy weights in very quick successions. It's a great idea to keep fit but seriously the injuries associated with it is not worth it

Do you even lift bro?
@9:50, is it just me or is Smith not doing full rep compared to Froning?
ben smith's hip was not going below his knees in the pistol squats
Nearly everybody cheats at some point during their training, these guys don't claim to be superhuman but we must appreciate what they are capable of and their all round abilities, I don't do crossfit but I believe to be a better rounded athlete we can all learn a lot from all sportsmen/women and their respective disciplines.
Great sport event
Froning is a machine
whats the song at 13:33 ?? please reply someone!
muy buen deporte
Increíble
Those deadlifts looked crowded. They need to make the lanes wider.
If Rich did mma he'd be a monster
kinda feel sorry for that dude that was leading but had to overhead lunge his bodyweight. Thats fn tough.
muy bueno
Wait, crossfit is a real thing?
Let's see you do the entire event with and without the arm walk, and then tell us that the arm walking didn't in fact add a serious draining factor.
Most charisma
Very strong men !
"shouldn't never be included"... I couldn't agree more
Rich Froning owning in my home town?!
Perfect
what a Beast!!!
go ahead and do this. Time cap 7 mins btw. GL
He's a machine
Do you even lift?
this is like gym day at school the olympics should be like this.
probably not...
who says what is right or wrong ...this guys are moving naturally with their entire body...they are not just using a few specific muscles to move a weight which is very artificial
Those onelegged squats are hard as hell but they really look ridiculous.
core strength, balance, control, stamina, arm strength....shall i go on?
Interesting how only one of them is taller than 6 feet. I wonder why that is?
Rich=Boss=President
7:00 actual event start
Right, they aren't tying to put hypertrophy into muscles they are trying to do work. That's something muscle-heads don't seem to get.
all of them bounce the bar off the floor on deadlift. no rep. deadlift means lifting from a dead stop
It's not about the workout.. it's about the competition. Everyone is allowed that same rules, so what's the problem? It's 405 pounds.. 5 times.. after squats.. 3 rounds.. lol?
i would really love to see you do this workout. show me a video of you doing all this, then I will get your youtube name tattooed on my forehead.
Don't confuse traditional Olympic powerlifting rules and techniques with crossfit's style. Most techniques used in crossfit wouldn't be permitted in a pwoerlifting competition, but the goal of crossfit is not a 1 rep max.

Jack Thompson what would you know about lifting 4 plates. stick to distance running twerp
impressive, however if i'm not chasing a ball, getting some serious tackles on the field and sticking my face into a ruck, it does not feel like i'm competing in a sport, just a day at the gym...
they cal all deadlift 500+? holy... i need to bulk up...
dan bailey trains day and night with rich but never gets better
demonbell, not kettlebell
bouncing the deadlift barbell seems more efficient but I feel like that weight would kill my back personally XD guess that's why I'm not competing with those guys hahah
can these kids deadlift 405lbs?
Kids are much stronger in comparison than full grown men. They don't give the title for just walking on your hands, so no you shouldn't give those kids the title.
5:00 Bailey slaps Bridges ass. HAHA.
then Smiths ass at 5:19
well...if something "shouldn't never," then technically you're saying that it should always. well done
I'm pretty sure the title "The Worlds Strongest Man" goes to the winner of the "Worlds Strongest Man" competition...
So this is like a weak version of strongman with less rest?
More like a 'technical' version of strongman, emphasizing finesse over aggression.
Ken Scofield You clearly haven't tried strongman training. It's as much finesse as aggression.
phirephaxL You're right in both respects. The post I was responding to was generalizing the crossfit games in relation to strongman, and my response was to re-tool the original statement to hold crossfit in a slightly more positive light.
Ken Scofield My bad brother.
Ken Scofield emphasising finesse!? There is no finesse in crossfit, no one gives a shit about form it's about getting the biggest score...
420 hours a day? please teach me bro..
Is there any drug testing in these games? Or free for all on all PEDs?
+11bravo1789 they all get tested! If you get caught with PEDs you get banned! if twice, banned for life.
