@PEACE95LUV try to tune it down to the lower octet rather than higher.
Also I think the tuning it actually EGDgBD not EGDdBD.. what she said (the latter) doesn't sound right to me

WAIT! Stupid me! Using the Snark tuner I failed to notice the sharp symbol, so I had the fifth string tuned to G# instead of G. No wonder I couldn't make it sound right! Better now.

My give up. I'm (probably considered) an intermediate-to-advanced beginner, but I can't make the chords sound right, no matter what I do. I think I'm just going to have to be patient until I improve to the point where it makes sense. I play the first chord as shown and it is wrong, wrong, wrong. Can't get past it or make it sound right.

Down down ups don't mean SHIT! If you have natural rhythm,(and I reckon that you NEED it in order play a musical instrument) then down down ups, or up up downs ARE IRRELEVANT!

its actually very easy (im a beginner)
so the normal tuning is EADGBe
and you need to change it to EGDDBD
for the A string, you need to tune it down to make it sound exactly as the E string 3rd fret
for the G string, you just tune it down until it sounds exactly as the D string
for the e string, you need to tune it down to make it sound exactly as the B string 3rd fret
i hope this helps (i know its been 4 years but still if it doesn't help you maybe it will help somebody hahaha)

Chris seems to be hybrid, strumming, picking throughout the whole song, on the first chord he strums down with the thumb over the top four strings at least. Very loose style, not sure how he gets the control.
