  • How to square up and modify quilt blocks. In this tutorial I show you how to square up and modify the quilt blocks that we have made doing the 2020 Block of the Month.
I show you how to make your blocks bigger, smaller and also how to measure to trim them up without losing your design. In this tutorial, I am making my quilt blocks larger at 14".
Crafting made fun and easy! Join me as I teach you how to make beautiful crafts and quilts using different techniques.
I get a lot of questions regarding the sewing machine that I am using. The machine that I am using is a Janome 9400 QCP.

I'm a beginner quilter and this is what's missing in any beginner quilting tutorial- tips to square up blocks that are not the right size. As a beginner, my skills have gradually improved over time with each quilt I make & with new online videos. However, I have made several blocks that are not the right size, most are due to difficulties getting scant 1/4" seams. (it was the presser foot I was using and other beginner mistakes)
Some blocks have too many small pieces for me to take apart so this is a wonderful & necessary tip for new quilters-Thank You!! Now I can go back and fix the blocks that are not the right size.

On your 14 in block, you measured 3.5 in on the inside and then 3.5 on the outside. Wouldn't you have saved your points by measuring the outside at 3.75 in? That would allow for the seam allowance when it gets sewn into to the quilt. Or am I missing something

You're not missing anything. You can measure it that way and you will keep your point. I did mine the way I did, so that I could keep the cutting fairly uniform. You are welcome to cut your blocks the way that works for best for you. 😊
