Interesting perspective. I’m Brazilian and I have lived in Toronto for about 6 years. I ended up deciding that I wasn’t for me anymore for very similar reasons. I have lived my whole life in Brazil prior to that except one year that I’ve spent in NC in the US as an exchange student and I found people in Toronto to be very aloof, distant and very unwilling to connect, much more so than in the US (might be related to southern culture). As a Brazilian that was a dealbreaker, at least to me. I insisted on staying for a long time, but I ended up being very depressed not only by that, but also by the insane consumerism and work culture. I still love Canada, but I found that having security and material prosperity does not make my life meaningful and fulfilled to the degree I experience here in Brazil. I was difficult to have my whole expectations shattered from idealizing Canada as well as the western way of life for so long, but at the same time I have a total new appreciation for where I was born and my country as a whole, even though it has it’s problems. For a lot of Brazilians it’s very difficult to understand someone moving from Canada to Brazil, but I can definitely relate to your experience. And it totally agree it comes down to what you value in life. Canada is world renowned and recognized as one of the best places in the world consistently through rankings and economic indicators, but I don’t think you can base your happiness on numbers and statistics. This is not to say Canada isn’t a good place to live, because it clearly is. You should check out cities in the South of Brazil at some point. I’m from the state of Santa Catarina and I personally think it’s one of the best places to be in Brazil. Maybe not for that rich culture you’ll find in places like Rio, but to me it’s a very good balance between what I had in Canada (a little better IDH indicators compared to the rest of Brazil, also a lot safer than Rio) and the good parts of Brazilian culture. Good luck with your journey in Brazil.

Thanks DJP. It's the hood I grew up in. And yeah you are right, the summertime was really the best times I had living in T.O especially as an adult. Now living in Brazil, I can basically be outside almost everyday enjoying more time living and not freeze my ass off. LoL
Your story reminds me of my own about 20 years ago. I am originally from Toronto and spent some years in Sao Paulo. It was an interesting experience but I was always struggling about leaving the security and safety net offered by Canada and knew that I could not get that in Brazil unless I had a proper working visa. Each country has its pros and cons and i don't regret my time in Brazil - I met some really great people there and learned the language at an advanced level. I totally understand why you want to leave Canada for Brazil but at the same time, I felt my time in Brazil was more like a "working holiday" (I was also teaching English) and it was more of a short term solution for my career aspirations. Maybe if I had a proper working visa in Brazil things would have been more different.
Thanks for sharing your experience of living in Brazil. I think living in Brazil is not for everyone but certainly staying for a long period of time can be good just to take a break from Canada. The lifestyle in Canada is not for me and I just like the climate amongst other things much more than what Canada can offer me. It is definitely not easy to stay legally in Brazil as there is so much documents and paper work to get done and even then it still may not be possible to stay without getting the right visa and such.

British people are being told move to Dubai for better quality of life as UK is in a inflation high tax mess, that includes high prices of gas and electricity. High rents and high cost of living. I heard if you get a good job in Dubai your much better there.
I was quicky in Toronto a long time ago and the city reminded me São Paulo city in certain aspects. Each person has their own concepts, but as a Brazilian at first sight what I would consider better in Rio as a city is the public transportation (buses and subways). Subways are very modern, safe and clean in Rio and São Paulo, no homeless etc.; in general no more than 1 or 2 minutes until the next train arrives, rarely have a problem etc. Excluding the climate, Brazilians from both cities living in Canada probably miss this aspect.
This is true. Plus Rio has the beautiful beaches, great food and generally friendly people. There is a lot of homeless here in Brazil though, especially on the streets of more wealthier neighborhoods such as Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon. Also you'll find many in the downtown of Rio called Centro.
@@nickmusttravel, yes and there are more homeless especially in Rio and other big cities since the pandemic. Maybe they have increased in most countries since then. What I meant is that at least in public transportations like subways we don't see them sleeping etc.and I think they are not even allowed. In cold countries subways, shopping centers etc. can be a refuge for them against extreme cold. So, although the streets in Rio in general are not as clean as they should be compared to Toronto and other cities in Canada at the time I was there, it's surprising for Brazilians to see beggars, dirt etc. in subways and other places when they travel to Canada, US and Europe.
@@nancyleal2529 That's true. It is really sad to see to be honest. Brazilians don't really realize that there is still misery and people that do not live the "first world" life in countries like Canada, America and other European countries, but it exists sadly and is only getting worse.
@@nickmusttravel , I know and I agree with you. In Brazil we are already used to living with big social differences because of the legacy of a huge slavery during the colonization, which ended only 134 years ago (more visible in cities like Rio and other regions where slavery was stronger). I think that most of my compatriots have a fanciful idea on some countries more focused on our media as "first world" and imagine that everything is better (health, very little poverty etc.). Even Brazilian tourists abroad tend to have wrong ideas on cold countries because they don't see similar poor housing like our "favelas". That is not possible for survival reasons and they don't imagine that many people live in similar bad conditions in more discreet tenements. It's probably shoking for my compatriots when they discover unknown realities, especially for the ones (not necessarily poor) who emigrate or try to immigrate to some countries without even having a previous experience as tourists etc. Dreamers without "good head"...
@@nancyleal2529 This is all very true. I don't look at my country of birth as being better than Brazil because each country has it's good and bad side.
As a Rio expert can you do a zone map video. The main inquiry is given that leblon to impanema is expensive and heavily policed. anything outside that is what? Flamingo is beautiful but more dangerous... But what about the rest of Rio. Can you make the same comparison to Brooklyn vs upstate NY? As in if you live an hour + out of the city does it become "safer"?
Dude rio Is definitely better than the U.S and Canada. Life in the U.S for me was terrible. Look at it now, I moved to Mexico two years ago and now in the Philippines. Best decision I could have made and now I'm 26. And you can't run from political turmoil it's everywhere
@@alaskanwhiskey, I am Brazilian and some of my compatriots abroad say the same, that Brazil is "worse", as if the whole country was the place where they lived. I think that so big countries (Canada, US and Brazil) can't be generalized. Sometimes some aspects are bad in a place or region, but better in other areas of the same country, but people don't travel to check before leaving their countries. I imagine that living many months with so low temperatures outside and other consequences are really hard. I was told that in British Columbia it is not that bad. My tour guide in Toronto was smart and chose the "perfect" profession: she worked during the months when there were more tourists, saved money, and during the winter she fled to the Caribbean, where she spent 4 months...
Woman from Rio here. South Zone is expensive and a good place to move without cars, great services near home, walking distance. Barra, also expensive, sparse neighborhood, you will need car for everything, security is good. Freguesia, use to be a good neighborhood 15min from Barra, now has some security problems, lots of robbery in the exits. Tijuca, neighborhood next to working center, 40min from South Zone, also good for having everything near and connected by subway, also can be subject of robbery at night. Going far from those places the tendency is get worse. Different from Canada and US, in Rio de Janeiro the suburbs are poor and dangerous. But in Rio de Janeiro State, there are great smaller cities, if you work from home, is the best place to be, is as pretty or more than Rio City, Búzios, Cabo Frio, São Pedro da Aldeia, Angra dos Reis, Paraty, with better security, working from home you will have the best of both worlds.

Good Points ! Brazil is a great country with vibrant culture I think for the safety concerns in Brazil you can live in a safe part of Brazil likle Gramado, Joa Pessoa, Curitiba. the people are not as warm as the cariocas but still better than the people in the Canada
Yeah I agree. If safety is a concern for you, there are lots of places to stay that are much safer than Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro. And the cost of living is much better for those that earn in dollar, euro etc.
For about 6 months out of the year, it definitely is. The summers are not too bad but still the quality of life in Toronto has dropped significantly as you need to be quite well off to live comfortably in T.O.
You're dead on with the culture of the people. I was born and raised in Toronto, but in a Brazilian household. I actually live in the neighbourhood you walked thru close to Brazilian Remittance. The culture of comradery is horrible in Toronto. I frequent Brazil and I usually spend no less than a month at a time and the first thing is that Brazil puts my relationships with friends, locals, neighbours into perspective. In Toronto you can live next door to your neighbour for 10 years and they'll never say "goodmorning, hello, how are you?", they won't even know your name. It's definitely a different culture and as you mentioned the people in general are very cold and standoff-ish. Meanwhile many Brazilians claim they come to Toronto, for "quality of life" (which I understand their perspective on safety/security) but all the ones I know, which are many end up saying all they do here is work haha!! Welcome to Toronto lmao! Makes you really think about what people mean when the say "quality of life". I can go on forever but I'm saving it for my video content when I get to Brazil. Honestly looking forward to moving to Brazil very soon. Another informative video Nick, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed this video. I do like that there is more sense of community in Brazil, specifically Rio but I find in my opinion, sometimes a little too far to that side meaning that people always want to know everything about you and depending on where you live, you don't have much privacy or quiet time. I wish there was a balance but I suppose Floripa was more what I liked in that area.
Hey nick I’m from Toronto too! Question! If you don’t mind me asking how do you make money to sustain your lifestyle in Brazil! Toronto is getting very strange!

To be honest, Canadian towns are very boring. i've lived in small towns my whole life and its VERY rare for us to have events/fun here. And honestly, it can get depressing. While Canadians apologize a lot, when it comes to actual relationships, people can be very very distant. The only friends I ever met were online. Never had a genuine friend in Canada. The majority of people here hate friendships/relationships. It really does get dull and makes alot of us numb. As a canadian, I really hate how we do not make an effort to have connections. The majority of us are very disconnected. Closed off. I mean for gods sake- my mother has dealt with chronic depression most of her life. WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU!?

My dream is to live in Canada and live another life. New friends. New food, weather. I'm not happy here. I hate violence, lack of education, I just want to be a better person. I would never disturb Canadian people. I'm going to make it real.
I wish you the best of luck on your journey to having a better life. For some, Canada is the better choice in comparison to war torn, violent or corrupt countries around the world.
Hi Brazilians, please don't make a mistake of coming to Canada. You are already in Heaven. Just improve crime rate in your country. Your country will be better than Australia or Canada easily
What a depressing place. There are no trees and no animals. Everything is so geometric and looks old. Urban furniture is practically non-existent. Why don't they plant some trees and put some benches along the street?
There are some of those things but for some reason Toronto has become very sterile and full of new massive condos. The only wildlife that really exists here is in the parks such as High park. Toronto is not what it used to be.

Funny! Such a similar thought! I just got back to US and can't wait to get back ro BR🤣 Luckily I live in FL tropics by the ocean so my sorrow is not that bad but still! 100% agree- people are way so different and the life is!!! And there is not a safe place on earth nowadays ! So just go with what makes you happy! Congrats you made it back! Enjoy and keep posting your videos! 🙌🙌🙌❤
Most people after they have been to Brazil upon returning home get the "Brazil Blues" lol And it's true, there is no 100% safe place on the planet. Thank you for stopping by my channel and leaving a comment, I really appreciate it. 😃👍
@@nickmusttravelYeah I just found out that a " Post Brazil Depression " it's a real thing! Lol. You can get addicted to this country very quickly 😉 Of course, thanks for sharing!
So looking forward to my trip there this year 🙏🏿
I know that feeling. It's gonna be awesome.
British people are being told move to Dubai for better quality of life as UK is in a inflation high tax mess, that includes high prices of gas and electricity. High rents and high cost of living. I heard if you get a good job in Dubai your much better there.
I don't doubt that. Just have to make the adjustment when it comes to cultural things.
Heh, it really is his old hood, our old school was just around the corner! 😆
Yes it is lol Who is this?

It’s modern art. 😁
Haha it's awful.
I saw 5+ Reayais to the US$. I have a distant in-law living in Toronto.
I can definitely think about doing a video like that. Thank you for the suggestion.
@@alaskanwhiskey I know Rio is better that wasn't the point
We have many things like that in the United States also
Looks like Chicago where I am from. And reside. Canada seems great but too too cold. Very expensive but Chicago has been very high too.
Toronto I would say is safer than Chicago but very very expensive and yes, gets very cold too. I am done with all of that. 😎
@@nickmusttravel Chicago is becoming a favela like Rocinha. Lol. It’s becoming ruined. One city I could be a digital nomad in Brazil is Curitiba or florianopolis. Any city in Santa Catarina. Porto Alegre was beautiful but it went through a bad period with horrible crime. I had an apartment in Lisbon. Now it’s too popular! Loved the Portuguese but European Portuguese is really hard. Thanks for your responses. B well. Glad you are residing there. Sounds so fun. I hate change. I could never leave. Thanks 🙏
@@nickmusttravel have you visited teresopolis yet? Very beautiful.

It is cold Bro!!🙂🙂🙂
Yes, it was very cold. Don't be fooled by the sunshine lol
Man I gotta take a trip back to Mexico(my second home) sometime next year, salute from the Philippines nice and hot weather. Have you heard the weather back home in Alaska bro winter storms were wild. In the lower 48 its freezing in most states also. Definitely unnatural weather.
Yes you should lol. And yeah I left Canada just at the right time otherwise I would have been stranded there. Amen! I hope everyone will be ok during this nasty crazy winter storm.
@@nickmusttravel I hope so but they say thunder and freezing Temps during the winter storm in the U.S. really weird stuff. I'll have to come to Rio man and meet up. Have you seen the ticket prices also? They have shot up to 1400-3000$ to travel across the water.
@@alaskanwhiskey Yeah, the planet is pissed off for sure. Yes, you should get here but I suggest for carnival or something. Yeah ticket prices are ridiculous because of fuel costs. I don't plan on leaving the country for awhile. I will however want to go visit other states here in Brazil.
@@nickmusttravel same bro, if I go to Mexico it's just to visit, and back to the Philippines I go I can stay here for 3 years on tourist visa. Just pay to extend. 2,3 month extentions after the first two you can extend for 6 months each time. Definitely not traveling around with ticket prices crazy and doesn't seem like it's going down anytime soon.
@@alaskanwhiskey That seems like a good plan. Well, if you ever come here, let me know and we'll definitely hang out. Just avoid the crappy cold weather at all costs lol. I don't think the tickets are going down anytime soon either, unfortunately.
Good Points ! Brazil is a great country with vibrant culture
I think for the safety concerns in Brazil you can live in a safe part of Brazil likle Gramado, Joa Pessoa, Curitiba. the people are not as warm as the cariocas but still better than the people in the Canada
Yeah I agree. If safety is a concern for you, there are lots of places to stay that are much safer than Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro. And the cost of living is much better for those that earn in dollar, euro etc.
For some reason Toronto always feels and looks so gloomy.. I don't know what it is .. Its like never a sunny vibe..
For about 6 months out of the year, it definitely is. The summers are not too bad but still the quality of life in Toronto has dropped significantly as you need to be quite well off to live comfortably in T.O.
Hello! Yes you should visit Canada one day. 👍🏻
I teach English online here but used to work in a school. Canada has fallen, especially Toronto. Thanks for the support and good luck! 👍
@@nickmusttravel yup, the amount to tyranny that has unfolded. Unjust laws. Inflation. Toronto is just not the same anymore at all. I do find Alberta still somewhat livable but defiantly not Toronto
@@arsalanhaider11 Yup, tyranny has taken hold of Canada. Toronto was a great city more than 10 years ago. I don't find anywhere in Canada livable plus all we do is work to die! Ain't living the rat race anymore.
Wow you nailed it on the head with a lot of those points. I can definitely relate to a few of those points you mentioned which is also part of the reason I left Canada for good. I'll still visit from time to time because of family but to live, not again.

I wish you the best of luck on your journey to having a better life. For some, Canada is the better choice in comparison to war torn, violent or corrupt countries around the world.
1 British pound you get over 6 Brazilian reais.

Nope, not yet.
Hi Brazilians, please don't make a mistake of coming to Canada. You are already in Heaven. Just improve crime rate in your country. Your country will be better than Australia or Canada easily
I can't agree with you more and I'll add that the economic and job market needs to improve as well.
I see cannabis is legal. Big sign on a big building.
Yes, in Canada it is.
