If you look at the skeletons of alot of animals kept in captivity from that era, alot had serious injuries or dental modifications. People that wrestled bears, wrestled toothless bears with no claws.
The animals probably got drugged with a mixture of opium and alcohol. Opium was very easy to get hold of back then and also alcoholic stuff like standard wine was often alot stronger than what it is today. I can imagine it was similar with spirits.

You are experiencing generational bias. Because you grew up in a world with a wide breadth of easily shared knowledge you make the mistake of saying things like "How hard would it be to figure out" . The truth is, your talking about a time where the idea that animals were actually living things and not possessions was not even thought up. Hell its almost far enough back where the Scientific method was just forming.
Its easy for us to look back and judge the past, but the reality is they really didn't understand much back then... look how many people died due to stupidly simple things in the victorian era, and how long it took for us to realize cocaine was not a good medication for children (or others), look how many people died because we thought sickness was spread through smell so we carried "pockets full of posey" to protect ourselves. The human race takes a long time to learn anything, and the sad fact is, we forget much faster than we learn.
You say who feeds an animal nails? People who think the animal can digest them... as told to them by "experts".
You say how hard would it be to figure out treating animals like that is cruel? Very hard for people who view the animal as a possession and not a living being as was the view of the age.
The world has changed, and we are all better people for it... we are all more educated, more rational, more ethical... because we have moved through the past, and we have enlightened ourselves on certain matters.
Imagine what our descendants will say about us in a few hundred years?

We had a local Safari that would let its gazelles and stuff like that into the predator pens to clean them but they would normally take the predators out but someone opened the wrong date one day and let it in with the lion pen and let's just say a School bus full of kids was driving by and got to see what Lions do to a gazelle that they've never seen before

I think those Chinese people got it right.
People usually take pets as just that but I certainly prefer a pet in a zoo than a wild animal.
I man, we have domesticated TONS of animals throughout hunan history, many o whom are homeless or poorly kept.
Why not giving THEM a home in a zoo instead of keeping animals from Africa, India and Brazil thst should be in THEIR envirionments instead?

Many zoos have breeding programs meant to stave of extinction of certain species. In addition to education about the animals to promote tolerance.

one thing its a good idea
but sadly ,,,no joking ,,,some animals are just alive ,,cause theyr keept in zoos or as pets
like a few chichlid spec from the victoria lake are completly extinct in the wild
but some aquarists still have them at home (the last ones of theyr kind)
      or some parrots at zoos)
      its the sad truth
and nowaday ,,in some cases(not all) animals have it better in a zoo then in theyr natural home
where they get killed for fun or loose theyr home to hotels and golf cours

At the start of the 20th century ,they had human zoo's for the world's fair's . That would be the worst zoo. And the zoo's in China just 20 years ago were putting a bear in with a lion to see who'd kill who & lost more like this & it used to be on UA-cam .

in the medieval age leopards were first a mythical creature, BUT by the high middle ages they had a good idea of it for sure, in fact the famed "lion of flanders" was initially mentioned as being not leo flandrensis but leopardus,
and as it was a black animal with a red tongue it makes perfect sense, offcourse today it is a lion but back then it made perfect sense for it to be a leopard
