If you look at the skeletons of alot of animals kept in captivity from that era, alot had serious injuries or dental modifications. People that wrestled bears, wrestled toothless bears with no claws. The animals probably got drugged with a mixture of opium and alcohol. Opium was very easy to get hold of back then and also alcoholic stuff like standard wine was often alot stronger than what it is today. I can imagine it was similar with spirits.
The worst zoo I have ever seen was about 25 years ago. The temp was over 90 degrees, most did not have shelter or enough water. There was no one there above low level staff. I called the local humane society and reported them. Hopefully, something was done, like close the zoo down.
I'm tickled to learn about the zebra who loved beer. I used to have a horse who loved alcohol. At cookouts he'd mug you for (or just steal) beer, margaritas (which he especially liked), mojitos, wine, whatever he could get ahold of. It was only an occasional treat, but people were always amused by it.
I know that, logically speaking, that people back then weren't any less intelligent than we are now, just less knowledgeable... but I can't help but feel that critical thinking skills are far more common nowadays than back when people thought elephants were predators and ostridges could live off of nails.

I remember as a kid visiting them I'd always watch flies/wasps/ants etc eating the ones of the floor and getting hammered... with wasps and flies you can tell... they fly a bit slower... smack into things a bit more... sometimes they won't even be able to lift off and you can pick em up by the wings... or squash em if you feel like it Ants too but it's harder to notice... they just start wandering around funny, lose sense of direction or where they are

They then proceeded to act mean towards the dog as if he had done something wrong. These foreign countries are known for torturing dogs and cats because they believe it makes the meat taste better so I see no sympathy when ones decides it's had enough of their behavior. This does not apply to all people in these countries, just the ones that do these acts of cruelty. Especially with a smile on their faces.

Its easy for us to look back and judge the past, but the reality is they really didn't understand much back then... look how many people died due to stupidly simple things in the victorian era, and how long it took for us to realize cocaine was not a good medication for children (or others), look how many people died because we thought sickness was spread through smell so we carried "pockets full of posey" to protect ourselves. The human race takes a long time to learn anything, and the sad fact is, we forget much faster than we learn. You say who feeds an animal nails? People who think the animal can digest them... as told to them by "experts". You say how hard would it be to figure out treating animals like that is cruel? Very hard for people who view the animal as a possession and not a living being as was the view of the age. If you must make a comparison with Harambe, compare the idiocy to the parent that can't keep their child in check. People are still cruel today, but we're ultimately a lot better than making elephants drink wine and feeding domestic animals to lions in undersized cages.
Zoos in Vietnam are a nightmare for the animals. Small inappropriate habitats and people often throw things at them. Zoos in Russia are awful as well. Just my observation about places I've lived.

If you think zoos' breeding program are beneficial look up "Marius the Giraffe". He isn't the only one and this is a HUGELY COMMON PRACTICE. That's right. He was bred to be lion food. Zooing is a business at the expense and exploitation of, innocent animals. I definitely agree humans are the problem. We always have been.

We had a local Safari that would let its gazelles and stuff like that into the predator pens to clean them but they would normally take the predators out but someone opened the wrong date one day and let it in with the lion pen and let's just say a School bus full of kids was driving by and got to see what Lions do to a gazelle that they've never seen before
I think those Chinese people got it right. People usually take pets as just that but I certainly prefer a pet in a zoo than a wild animal. I man, we have domesticated TONS of animals throughout hunan history, many o whom are homeless or poorly kept. People usually take pets as just that but I certainly prefer a pet in a zoo than a wild animal.
I man, we have domesticated TONS of animals throughout hunan history, many o whom are homeless or poorly kept.
Why not giving THEM a home in a zoo instead of keeping animals from Africa, India and Brazil thst should be in THEIR envirionments instead?
Many zoos have breeding programs meant to stave of extinction of certain species. In addition to education about the animals to promote tolerance.

but sadly ,,,no joking ,,,some animals are just alive ,,cause theyr keept in zoos or as pets
like a few chichlid spec from the victoria lake are completly extinct in the wild
but some aquarists still have them at home (the last ones of theyr kind)
or some parrots at zoos)
its the sad truth
and nowaday ,,in some cases(not all) animals have it better in a zoo then in theyr natural home
where they get killed for fun or loose theyr home to hotels and golf cours
most species live longer in captivity that in the wild these days

At the start of the 20th century ,they had human zoo's for the world's fair's . That would be the worst zoo. And the zoo's in China just 20 years ago were putting a bear in with a lion to see who'd kill who & lost more like this & it used to be on UA-cam .

in the medieval age leopards were first a mythical creature, BUT by the high middle ages they had a good idea of it for sure, in fact the famed "lion of flanders" was initially mentioned as being not leo flandrensis but leopardus,
and as it was a black animal with a red tongue it makes perfect sense, offcourse today it is a lion but back then it made perfect sense for it to be a leopard
