- Disco Demolition was a promotional event held at Comiskey Park on July 12, 1979. The Chicago White Sox were playing a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers. Radio Personality Steve Dahl asked his disco-hating listeners to bring records to the ballpark where, between games, he would blow them up on the field. The extremely large, overzealous crowd took to the field and damaged it, resulting in the White Sox having to forfeit the second game. Disco Demolition night gained national attention and remains one of the most notorious promotional stunts in sports history.

Disco then was strongly related with the Afro Americans and the gay culture. That for some people was unbearable. They didn't admit that and were using ridiculous excuses to destroy disco.
I love disco and UA-cam has made many forgotten disco records popular again.
Disco never died but was transformed to various dance genres.
However the original disco music of late 70's is unique and great.

I agree! In my opinion, the 2020's do suck! Covid, nobody's making any good music, CD players are going the way of mate's chairs, Apple has discontinued the I-pod. Lots of things made this decade are not user friendly. So many things are made more difficult than they have to be. Also not to mention, Rap, which is the disco of the past 30 years is not going away.
Now rock and roll has died and newer artists are trying to bring disco back. Y’all tried to kill a popular mostly black genre and now it’s coming back.
I don't care what anyone says, I love disco. It's about the only kind of music I can dance to without feeling self conscious about how silly I look.

Disco Demolition Night was a wild publicity stunt. Disco was on its way out in 1979, having disappeared from the mainstream by 1981, but during that time, R&B and New Wave music was influenced by Disco, while Yacht Rock songs charted from 1979 to 1982, and many hip-hop songs sampled from Disco including The Sugarhill Gang's "Rappers' Delight" and others...

In 1975 from Detroit I was in High School, he was the best. The WRIF station. I wish I had tap all his show. In 1980 seen him at ,Uncle Sam, telegraph rd. and Schoolcraft rd. In 1981 when to Texas as pick him up from Chicago one night. He would have 5 voices coming out of him of shooting Bullwinkle by the mayor of Detroit.
He was on WABX, not WRIF.

Steve Dahl didn't kill disco, the real culprit was the record labels seeking to cash in on the craze by putting out junk like "Disco Duck". So while disco demolition night made "disco" a dirty word for a long time in the US, Euro Disco was booming on the opposite side of the Atlantic

The kind of spectacle that was disco demolition, was the kind of thing that attracted some of the lowest common denominator of midwestern people. Aggressive, bigoted, and ignorant. Think Heavy Metal Parking lot but on a larger scale.

I'd like to see this done to RAP MUSIC!!!!! For the past 30 years, RAP has been what disco was in 1979. The past 30 years, it's been taking my peers away from classic rock! Unlike disco, most of it is the so called "Gangster Rap", which is vulgar! Much of it is laced with profanity, racial slurs, and graphic sexual connotations that mention private parts, like "dick: and "pussy." I feel that Gangster Rap is a contributing factor in this uptick in gun violence we've seen across the country this past year, much of which has stemmed from petty arguments.
I say that every Carolina Panthers home opener should be RAP DEMOLITION NIGHT!!!!! Fans could get their tickets to the game for half price if they submit their most disliked rap CD. The rap CD's would be put into the "Rapmobile", an early 80's Chevy Impala with 22 inch rims and subwoofers. A block of C-4 would be cut up into six chunks, and evenly distributed among the chassis of the vehicle. Three blocks on the port side, and three on the starboard side. The six chunks of C-4 would be wired to be remotely detonated, to insure that the vehicle and the rap CD's are instantly pulverized on detonation. The RAP DEMOLITION should take place after the game, not during halftime!!! The "Rapmobile" would be driven out onto center field, and parked there with the subwoofers booming. Then the C-4 would be detonated, pulverizing the both the vehicle and the CD's. Riot officers would be present to keep people from running out onto the field after the detonation.
The shooter that shot up douglas high school in florida was a metal head who detested black people and rap music. I know because they investigated everything he wrote online.

Disco Demolition Night (June 12, 1979) was the greatest (but most destructive) baseball promotion of all time! 2nd was Ten Cent Beer Night in Cleveland on June 4, 1974. Regular price then was 65 cents.
Both are immortal in baseball lore. Baseball is the greatest game ever invented, with unique and funny (or crazy as DDN / TCBN were!) events that will never be forgotten! 3rd best (no destruction, but undoubtedly the funniest, was 3-ft 7-in., 65-lb. Eddie Gaedel (pinch-hitter) for the St. Louis Browns, in the 2nd game of the double-header on Aug. 19, 1951.

Huh? I don't recall that the station in Detroit actually turned to disco? I was a Dahl fan then and listened to him, and basically he made a decision to go to Chicago. So this is bullshit. The radio stations he was on stayed rock. I can confirm this as a Detroit area resident. We were sad to see Steve go actually. Nice try Steve, but this is pure bullshit.
