Super Disco Demolition: The 40th Anniversary Compilation (1979)

  • In honor of the 40th anniversary of the infamous "Disco Demolition" promotion that got "a little out of hand", here is a compilation of footage, some not seen since the time of the event and some also in vastly upgraded video quality direct from master tapes.
If you want to know what it was all about, to feel as close as you can to actually being there that night (or watching on TV that night) - this is a good encapsulation while at the same time being as complete as possible.
    Includes:
Footage from the day before, with Harry Caray and Jimmy Piersall discussing tomorrow night's "Teen Night" promotion, culminating with an extremely rare instance of Caray catching a foul ball in his fishing net.
(02:04) - Next is a compilation of footage from Game 1 of the "Twi-night Double Header" featuring all segments that mention the promotion or that show banners in the stadium, or any other relevant segments. Lots of "Disco Sucks" chants, too.
    (03:28) - "Disco sucks!" - Harry Caray
(04:19) - Be sure to notice the homosexual slur yelled at the unfortunate singer tasked with performing the National Anthem that night. (if this was another era, one could almost find the moment hilarious - though it mostly brought back memories of how virulent and cutting the use of the other "F Word" was back then)
(21:20) - Harry returns after his 3 inning break.
(21:48) - "Without a question, the greatest teenage promotion night, that any station has had, by far." - Harry Caray
(22:44) - Also included for fun was that evening's official 7th inning stretch rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" (I say official because the song will be sung again later in the evening by Bill Veeck as yet another hopeless attempt at establishing crowd unity in getting everyone back in their seats)
(30:20) - Included in this compilation is over an hour's worth of newly remastered and complete footage of the main "meat" of the event, with Steve Dahl, Garry Meier, Lorelei and crew orchestrating the between game blowing-up of a box of disco records. This footage was sourced from WSNS master feeds, which include footage not seen by television audiences, as at one point the station had switched to a "rain delay-like" "film" of some kind as filler while things hopefully settled down in the ballpark.
(01:32:34) - Lastly, we get a few more minutes of broadcast footage with Harry and Jimmy before they sign off for the night, including 4 minutes of additional footage gleaned from a Betamax recording made by Bob Schuller. (Thanks, Bob!)
(1:37:53) - "There's some great programming coming up here on Channel 44 and I know you're anxious to see it..." - Harry Caray
Thanks to unnamed former WSNS staffers (you know who you are!) for providing some of this footage on tape to be remastered digitally as well as the UA-cam channel "Classic MLB1" from which the Game 1 footage was sourced. Lastly, thanks to the late, great Marty Zivin, who somehow recorded and saved the footage from the night before, perhaps psychically predicting the importance of the fiasco that was about to occur.
This aired on local Chicago TV on Wednesday, July 11th 1979 (the day before footage) and Thursday, July 12th 1979, with some segments from the master feed never actually appearing on air.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,700+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

I've been watching UA-cam videos for years now and had never thought about looking for a video regarding this incident until now. I was talking to my best friend of 45+ years and she hit me with the "do you remember when....?" "Umm...of course I remember! I'm fairly certain that I'm still grounded!" This story is my most memorable "screw up" that played out in reality much different than it did in my 14 year old brain! We're from Detroit and we were 14 that summer and absolutely despised disco music! Our local rock station (WRIF) organized a group and all members received a D.R.E.A.D. card (Detroit Rockers Engaged in the Abolition of Disco) and we were proud card-carrying members. So when we heard there was going to be a disco demolition gathering, we knew we had to be there! We asked both of our moms if they would take us and we both got the "get out of here with that bs" look! So, on to plan B! So we got a map to calculate the distance between Detroit and Chicago. Now remember, we're 14! The distance was about 1-1/2" which we equated to a 2 to 3 hour drive! We knew a couple boys who were going so we hopped a ride with them; in a car that the driver stole from his dad and he was only 15! It took way longer to get there (of course it did) than we calculated. Once we got there everything was still calm and they were still playing. It seemed like it went from zero to 100 in a second. We got separated from the boys we rode with, but, the police found us! We tried lying our way out of the situation by telling them we were 18. Yeah that didn't work! They made it perfectly clear that we were either leaving with our parents or we weren't leaving at all! Her mom didn't have a car so she rode with my mom. It took them 6 hours to drive to Chicago! I had never seen such a calm expression on my mom's face and that was scary! Lol! That was the longest ride home ever! There were many bad decisions made that day! But out of all my bad decisions, and there were many, I have some awesome memories! For the record, we never made it to the field! Perhaps if we had been old enough for the disco "scene" our opinions may have been different. But at 14, we didn't care for it!

Caray and Jimmy Piersall were the wildest, craziest, and most unpredictably hilarious announcing team of all time (they were also extremely knowledgeable). It's a shame that Caray is almost TOTALLY associated with the Cubs (where he finished out his career), where he was but a pale shadow of his former self with the White Sox. This was the White Sox's "Golden Era" of tv broadcasting, Bill Veeck-style. The team usually sucked, but that just added to the fun. I will always remember those nights...whether at the park or at home in front of the TV, fondly. It's GREAT to see this posted, since it preserves the real "feel" of that era for all to enjoy (including Harry's stunning catch of a foul ball in his fishing net). LR

My brother came home about 430am no shirt and black and blue marks on his front and back from the cops hitting him to get off the field. I'll also comment that Polyphonic addresses that in his video on the history of disco. Anyway, I think that homophobic slur confirms some of that.

I'm glad to finally see the full build up to it , thanx for whoever saved the tape for prosperity, it is a crazy part of american history . This was a building drama that we could see exactly how it would end, but could'nt do anything to change it. It had every thing, baseball, hilarity, joy, Harry Carey, weed smoking, rock'n'roll, organ music, full ballpark, a dictator wanna' be DJ, cringe-worthy moments, hilarious -corny moments, explosions, fireworks, & an actual fire, violence, obvious alcohol abuse, police, and Bill Veeck. I love baseball and i love rock'n'roll, and i did'nt care for disco, but, , damn ! It's a sad thing to see people have no respect for other fans, for the game , and most importantly, that poor grounds-keeper, rolled up pants legs & pissed . Bad decisions and booze , loss of self-respect, is to blame, but it was riviting to watch. Bob.G

The epic lyrics of disco demolition anthem. (based on Da Ya Think I’m Sexy? By Rod Stewart)
    The epic lyrics
    What's happening, baby
    How the heck are you
    My name is Tony
    Would you care to dance
    No, hey, calm down
Let me get you another Pina Colada
I mean what did we join this
    Exclusive disco club for anyway
You know, I mean it costs
    A hundred dollars to join
    And we're supposed to dance
    Don't you like my
    White three piece suit
    My gold coke spoon
    Gold razor blade and
    Gold Italian snaggletooth, you know
Come on, please dance with me
    I wear tight pants
I always stuff a sock in
    It always makes the ladies
    Start to talking
    My shirt is open
    I never use the buttons
    Though I look hip
    I work for E. F. Hutton
    Do you think I'm disco
Cause I spend so much time
    Blow drying out my hair
    Do you think I'm disco
Cause I know the dance steps
Learned em all at Fred Astaire
    Look, I know
    You don't wanna dance
    Cause, like, there's
A lot of creeps in here
    Always hitting up on you
    Let me tell you something
    I'm not a creep
I mean, look at the way
    I am dressed, sweetheart
Look at my hair, it's perfect
    I saw Saturday Night Fever
    Eighty-seven times
    Please dance with me
    Some people call me scum
    Cause I don't have
    A realistic set of values
    And you know what
    I'm beginning to maybe
    Think they're right
    Hey, where are you going
    Wait a second, listen
    Let's skip the dancing
    Come back here and let's
    Just go to my place
Do I live on the beach, no
    I live in my car
    I have a 280z
No, wait, where are you going
Let me have your phone number
Hey, come back, what do you mean
    You don't have a phone
    Let me have your address
I'll stop by and visit you
    What do you mean
    You don't live anywhere
    I like to dance with
    Girls in sleazy dresses
    Lipstick, nail charms
    And makeup in excesses
    Buy them a drink
And try and get their number
    Usually, they are as
    Cold as a cucumber
    Do you think I'm disco
    Am I superficial
    Looking hip's my only goal
    Do you think I'm disco
    Maybe it's not too late
To get into rock and roll
    Rock and roll
    I'll tell you something
    I have never been happier
    Now that I'm into
    This rock and roll thing
I sold my white three piece suit
At a garage sale last weekend
    Made twenty-five dollars
    Got rid of my 280z
    Picked myself up a
    Beat up old '69 Dart
Melted down all my gold jewelry
Into a Led Zeppelin belt buckle
    I mean, things are happening
Boy, it's so easy to be led astray
    By all those pictures of
    Margaret Trudeau in People magazine
    Making you think you're supposed
    To get into disco
I was a teenage disco duck

I wonder if they 'knew' it would get 47k to the park...maybe not, they are baseball promoters not in touch with the youth culture of the time

Jimmy Pearsol was such an over dramatic whiner. One of my uncle's once told me a story that he was listening to a CWS game on the radio and a fight broke out between a couple of White Sox Team mates and Pearsol was just whining and complaining about how teammates would fight like that. Harry's response was priceless..."Well JImmy, he probably called his mother a pussy.". LOL!

Good times but most of those fuckers were Van Halen, Led Zep Ozzy fans. stupid narrow minded heavy metel assholes. However it only cost 98 cents to get in with a disco record good promo by Blll Veck he wanted to fill the seats. good job

Those shitty records that those lames burned were not even real DISCO LPs . a friend of mine worked security that day and said that people were burning SOUL, JAZZ, MOTOWN records. Complete IDIOTS, LOL! They would rather watch something burn than something they paid to see!
