Australia needs to put its own national interest first and not that of the United States.

When US banned Chinese steel, China automatically needed less iron ore.
In other words, US also banned Australian iron ore.

Why is US protectionism a dilemma for us? if US want to penalise their citizens with taxes ( tarrif) on ev's good wishes . We should treat our largest trading partner ( China)with the respect for its efficient low cost quality products

The following countries are not independent, they are just vassal states of the United States: ukie, canadie, ausie, new zie, euie, japanie, south korie, taiwanie. China needs to remember this when doing business.

I really cannot see why the Chinese EVs should become an issue at all in Australia. The US and EU do have some geopolitical issues with China, but Australia better stay away from them.

The issue USA and Europe have with China?
China is eating (has eaten) their lunch.
      They've out-Capitalised the Capitalists.

if Australia spends less on cars they will have more money to spend on other things. like shops, restaurants, vacations, etc. As Australia has no auto sector to protect.
The only question is if Australia will follow the USA tariffs because of strong geostrategic pressure for USA benefit but not for Australia's.

Once upon a time Australia have the best trade on the iron ore with China , it's when the greedy raises the price and start a geopolitical war with China acting as the lapdog of USA, then China quietly sourced its iron ore in Brazil... So now China still import from Aussies but far less... Did China suffer? hardly, did the Australian economy suffer ? well ,you have to ask people on the ground... when the tide is smooth why disturb the water?

If Australia isn't happy, just decouple from China, case closed.

I went to Australia for the first time 20+ years ago, that was my first oversea trip. On my arrival in Melbourne, I saw numerous car models which was a sharp contrast to what were available in Shanghai at that time. I thought "wow, indeed a developed country." 20 years on, similar contrast strike me to my core again, half of all cars on the streets of Shanghai are now EVs, mostly Chinese brands, some are tesla. In Australia, the vast majority are still those high pollution, dirty & highly efficient ICE cars with decades old design and ancient interiors, most of them can't even be controlled by your voice, not to mention self driving capabilities. All these happened in just 20 years when people keep telling me that the Chinese government is repressing its citizens. The amount of brainwashing propaganda only display is just shocking! LOL.

Australia's dilemma is Not US concern, just as they had not shown concern for the EU countries doing US's bidding too. We all can see who are the suckers.

India should have its shot at industrializing like China 20-30 years ago. It can do wonders for living standards. But you don't need to antagonize what's going to be the largest consumer market for decades in doing so. Developed countries want developing countries to fight each other. Don't play their game.

India can supply cow dunes as fertilizer to Australia, and also can supply E-rickshaw as well.
