Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show I'm your host Paul and it's time to Jordan Peele back the layers on the directors new UFO movie Nope.
There's some major twists that nobody could've predicted as well as a some big themes that I think are definitely worth talking about. Throughout this video we're gonna be going through it all so should you go past this point if you haven't seen it? Nope...and...that's also the kind of wit you can expect in this video.
With that out the way, thank you for clicking this, now let's get into NOPE!
Ok so up top we're really busy with comic-con at the moment so I don't really wanna do a big plot recap and instead I'd rather forcus on the major details in the film as well as what I think the overall theme is. Jordan Peele's movies are always laced with social commentary and this picture feels like an examination of how those that work in hollywood are treated.
This is seen in several of the characters as well as the animals that appear throughout. There's very little respect given to them and I think that at it's core this film is about respecting the aspects of the industry that are often looked over.
Now the first major thing that I think we have to talk about when discussing the movie is the reveal of what's going on with the apparent flying saucer. Though everyone thought from the trailers that this would be an alien space craft we learn that it's actually the alien itself.
The movie takes place roughly over the space of about half a year and we learn that this creature hides amongst the clouds hunting for prey.
Like most beasts this monster operates based on instinct and if it feels threatened it will attack. There are ways to survive encounters with it which we see through OJ who doesn't make eye contact with it.
If one keeps their head down and doesn't look directly at it they can survive this but obviously with it existing in the clouds, several animals and people stare up at it.
Often in order to survive encounters with wild beasts people are told to avoid eye contact at all cost and this is very much carried over to the monster itself. Where it comes from we don't fully know but it does unfurl at the end of the movie and show that it's almost like a sort of flower/jellyfish. Grace Randolph in her review discussed how she thinks Peele was very much trying to talk about how we know as little about the skies as we do the oceans and that this creature may even be from Earth.
Now we discover throughout the film that the beast is fed horses by a character named Jupe who used to be a child star.
He starred on a sitcom in the 90s called Gordy's home that centred around a family that lived with a chimp.
They treated him like a member of the family but he was of course an animal and in not respecting this they ended up suffering.
The Chimp ended up going feral and it went wild, injuring several people.

toss up on o.j. maybe how his father dies is a sign of his coming end. the old Western of the guy riding off on the horse slumped over, but in the movie later he falls off. i remember the argument in the Samuel Jackson movie at the end. on the other hand. we dont see him take him or him scream. we see no blood or body in the explosion. so does she vision him? she never had this ability before. nor do we see any spiritual watching over element in the movie.

The scene of the kids in the masks, I remember everyone in the theater audibly reacting. Even though it was just kids and not aliens, it was still a very cool tense scene
yeah definitely felt like the film gave us a more traditional movie scare in that scene, I remember feeling like o.k. here we go and sitting up in my seat as the tension ramped up for me
same for my theater. You could feel everyones tension and everyone moving in their seats. It made for a dope experience that not many movies can match.
but unfortunately, it amounted to nothing and we were never given a scene as tense as that again.

When Angel is seen hitting the ground wrapped in barbed wire, you can see the cannister of film rolling down the mountainside. Also, I love the callback to the conversation onset about Lucky's name. "Is he lucky?" "I guess?" and then he's the only surviving Haywood horse.

This movie had it moments. For me, I think the scariest part was the fact that you could hear the victims screaming nonstop in the UFO until they got pulverized to a pulp.
the entire UFO is the alien itself. It has no intellectual except eating and eating, hiding in clouds, hunting animal or human and digested them alive. There's voice of guy screaming "God it burns!"

Ya weird. They were obviously alive inside it for days. Then suddenly and abruptly their screaming stops. I wonder what it did to them in that instant. I mean if you're able to scream "Get us out of here". Everything for the most part is in tact. Whatever happened, it was horrifying....

You can see a tape playing of her father saying the same lines she said earlier. It’s a script she memorized from her father, but it doesn’t fit because she is a generation lower. Which is why her brother reminded her of the extra great she forgot to add.

I literally just thought about this. Before I clicked on this video I watched Watch Mojo’s review which pointed out she memorized the script, but didn’t point out how she missed a “great” because she is a generation lower and the original script was read by her father

I was so glad that the “ship” didn’t get explained. Everything that they learned about it was through their own experiences and not explained in expositional scenes

That one scene where all the spectators were pulled into the ship, and crammed in that tube was truly horrifying.. then hearing the screeching of the ship was actually the screams of all those people… truly disturbing. Reminds me of that movie Under The Skin with Scarlett Johansson
That scene was probably one of the most terrifying scenes I've seen in a while.
I loved it that’s how animals feel that fear being eaten alive
Oh dude that was horrifying and made me understand claustrophobia, all of those people we're escentially crushed to death and later when the alien dedicated on the house and it was nothing but blood holy crap.

Gordy's rampage, to me, was *one* of the scariest scenes I've ever seen in a movie and in the movie.
Right because it’s so real! It reminded me of the lady who was attacked by a chimp around 2009 I think and she was on the Oprah show.

It was scary snd i also felt sad for the monkey Bc it was likely it was triggered by the balloon popping. And he even nudges a body almost as if he didn’t understand what he just did.

When Gordy got shot that was the only time I physically jumped throughout the movie, such a tense scene with a realistic vibe to it
I felt like this movie was an allegory discussing the dangers of blindly pursuing a 'spectacle' in spite of its inherent danger (such as working with wild animals). The opening quote, 'I will cast abominable filth at you, make you vile, make you a spectacle' makes this point. Our modern sensibilities understand a spectacle as a good thing, but that isn't objectively true when people are hurt, killed, or maimed in public. There are people who are drawn to violent videos, as shown with the cinematographer watching graphic animal fighting videos. He says, "the shot you want, you never wake up from" foreshadows his eventual dissatisfaction with his shot (he says "the lighting") and dashes out to get the shot. His obsession with a filming a spectacle was his end. Steven Yeun's character looked back on his tragic time with the monkey with wonder, daydreaming about the time he was that close to that dark spectacle. His mementos of the show are dark as well, and he says that people (presumably obsessed with violent videos too) pay money to see that stuff.

Grace really did a great job breaking down the movie’s themes in her spoiler review. I loved how every character in the movie had a different relationship with the pursuit of spectacle:
(1) Ricky and the Sitcom massacre: Everybody was willing to smile and laugh for the camera despite the fact that they were dealing with a temperamental animal
(2) Ricky and the Circus massacre: Everybody was willing to smile and gawk at an actual alien presence despite the fact that they had no idea if it really came in peace or not, and Ricky loved fame too much to stop chasing dangerous opportunities whenever it presented itself
(3) Cinematographer: He was jaded for being recognized as having filmed the impossible, and he willingly gave his life for that one truly perfect shot
(4) TMZ Guy: So determined to uncover the truth he wanted the camera rolling as he was dying, and he even scorned Emerald for trying to save his life
(5) OJ and Emerald wanted to bring honor to their fathers legacy, and were so determined to capture the perfect shot they put their lives at risk to get it
(6) Angel didn’t just want to capture the spectacle for fame or financial gain; he wanted to warn the world and hopefully save lives. That’s why when his life was truly in danger he focused on survival over spectacle

When Jean Jacket (the alien) opened itself up at the end to reveal its jellyfish-like structure, it reminded me of those biblical angel drawings that are like "be not afraid" and its the scariest shit you've ever seen. I am still trying to process Peele's meaning behind this-- like is there a bigger biblical reference to this film? I love digging into the symbolism of Peele's films. He's in a league of his own when it comes to horror.
YES! I was so giddy seeing the reveal because it exactly reminded me of a biblically accurate angel
Peele always uses a Bible verse as the theme or starter of each of his movie to connect with its message.

I also noticed that in its largest form, the alien flashed the square fringed colored parts that opened and hypnotized you like the shutter of a camera or the flash of a bulb. It kept opening and flashing those fringed colorful parts as it opened to eat the viewer. *shudder*
I thought it was extremely cool that the monster is probably most likely THE ANGEL that the Bible references, the UFO many reference, like it’s an ancient being that’s always been around

Something that I find interesting is that a coin was the object that killed their father and at the very end, emerald needed coins in order to capture the spectacle. I’m not sure what it means but I don’t think this was unintentional
Just guessing here, but maybe it has to do with "coin" meaning money in general and also being shorthand for importance. If that's what Peele intended (or *one* of the things he intended!), then Hayward Sr. died after a lifetime training and selling his horses (including one that Em loved) for Hollywood "coin." And Jupe used false coin/coins in hopes of getting some attention before finally outdoing Haywood Sr. by *sacrificing* horses.

People are mentioning the Nickel as a reference to early Nickleodeon cinema exhibition spaces and machines that took a coin to operate. No one seems to be mentioning Thomas Jefferson who is on the head side - Found this on Wiki "In contrast to his predecessors, Jefferson exhibited a dislike of formal etiquette; he arrived plainly dressed, alone on horseback, and retired his own horse to the nearby stable' - is anything an accident in a Peele film?
I thought it was great that they the showed the child actor (Yuen’s character) didn’t learn from his near death experience and tried for spectacle again. At first the Monkey scenes didn’t make sense but I’m starting to unpack it.
I don’t think his intention was to show a “spectacle” but to prove he can tame the alien by forming some connection like he felt he had with Gordy since the chimp didn’t harm him. It’s like Siegfried and Roy who thought their animals would never harm them because they though they had some special skill to connect with their tigers.
Definitely love the fact that Peele subtly foreshadowed that it wasn’t a ship. Angel telling OJ, “it’s UAP now, not UFO”, because we don’t call living things objects.
That was my favorite part realizing that the Space Ship was actually a living organism. I've never seen that done. And it can compress it's entire body into a streamline form to go faster.
They really thought of everything when they made and designed Jean Jacket. No wait. Jordan Peele did bc he's the writer, director, and producer of this thing!

The 'prank' alien scene was creepy but the scene where the jupe audience were shown in a closed space being eaten and sacrificed was truly horrifying.
Seems to crush them to death. Symbolic I must say.

Jordan Peele is bold and I love that he's really creating a signature experience with his films.
I feel like a lot of people are expecting a basic horror movie with aliens so they might not like it as much but honestly, I love it

The best is going in blind. I didn't know this movie had to do with aliens.
Another thing I found interesting was OJ and how he tends to look down and not make much eye contact more often than not, unless it was necessary. Also, the cloud -- I felt like the creature was able to replicate one to blend it. It was never a normal cloud, didn't move at all. And those questioning why it fell for the balloon trick -- it fell for the horse trick. Hell, I think the horse statue was staring up at the sky. It probably ignored the balloon due to it's location, but when it flew up, it was staring right at him, and by then when knew this creature ducks things up on sight.
I think what makes Jean Jacket so freighting is that even by the end of the film, we never knew it's origins, the lore behind it's species, whether or not there's more of them out there, or whether or not it came from space or Earth. Not knowing what the creature is makes it even more terrifying. All we do know is that it behaves like an animal and we should treat it as such. One wrong move and you're dead. Maybe it's best we didn't know where it came from. As long as it's gone, we're safe.

@@malcolm7640 like I said, that what makes it terrifying. We don't know why this creature was there in the first place. If we did learn more about the creature in terms of lore or species, it would have detracted any form of meaning or layer to this film. It's all about spectacle.

You're definitely on the money! It IS about how Hollywood treats its people, but more specifically how it treats its BLACK contributors and members. Why? Because A) the Haywood family backstory (made-up or not) is really about how no one bothered to remember the name of the first person in a moving image just because they were Black - all that is remembered is the horse; B) in the midpoint of the film, Em says "they won't erase us this time" when plotting how to shoot the alien on camera, directly referencing Black erasure from history (popular conceptions of history are white conceptions of history, think about it); lastly C) the alien itself -- and all the other wrangled animals in the film - horses and Gordy the chimp -- are a metaphor for how Black bodies are fetishized in Hollywood, their being and culture treated as spectacle without any serious recognition of the state of their humanity or history. All of this wraps up beautifully right at the end of the film: when Em becomes the first human to capture an image of extraterrestrial life on Earth. History can't erase her this time.

Thank you for making this observation. I love when other races recognize things that black people speak on often. So this comment is very appreciated. Also the name of the African American horse jockey is still unknown. The name was made up for the film, but the horses name is known.
Literally came out of my showing of this movie last night feeling like I understood a good majority of everything but knowing the first thing I was going to do when I got home was look for a heavy spoilers breakdown, very happy to see it's out now 🙏

just found out the chimpanzee story is very much real and the survivor was actually on oprah. amazing director never disappoints in themes and symbolism. loved the mention of the black horse rider from the first movie ever made, something never talked about and a true example of how poc especially black artists are overlooked in the industry despite their contributions.

the only thing those 2 had in common was it being a chimp attack. it wasnt a performing chimp and it got jealous of her visiting friend and killed her.
What made me love this movie even more was the previews didn’t just spoil the whole movie. You just couldn’t figure out what was going to happen next. Also the dropping of the inanimate objects the ufo is like death. Don’t matter who you are or what you do the material things won’t be going with you to wherever you go after you die.
was just also a neat way to acknowledge that people often carry small, sharp metal objects that would likely injure or even kill if fallen onto someone from a distance. Not really a message or "theme" of the film necessarily just a little dose of reality. Strange and unlikely as the first death was, it also felt disturbingly realistic
I saw another commenter post that polaroids can't be edited or photoshopped, so I think that was significant. BUT I also think she can make a small "movie" by putting them together in a sequence, much like the video of the man riding the horse. During the movie, when Emerald (keke) is in the house, in the background you see art on the wall of all of the individual photographs of the horse rider that they were able to put together to make the movie. I believe she intends to do the same.

So it makes you wonder if things came full circle; they went back to the basics to capture something most people won’t or can’t believe but maybe will now when they do the very thing their great great (great) grandfather did.

You also notice how Gordy and young Steven didn’t make eye contact, there was a table cloth blocking there eyes from meeting and then fist bumping
During that scene, I was a bit baffled on why young Jupe wasn't attacked, but on my ride home, as I'm going over the movie in my head, it made perfect sense. Hence the reason Peele shot that scene specifically like that.
I think the reason he wasn’t attacked by Gordy is because he was completely focused on the standing shoe. The shoe had his attention the entire time so he never made eye contact with Gordy which is how he survived.

I read an article before the movie came out which said that Peele's message had to do with our "obsession with spectacle." I think the point was that to avoid being consumed by spectacle we need to keep a respectable distance from it. The ufo monster only ate whatever looked directly at it. Yeun's character attempted to monetize on the ufo by hyping it up as a spectacle, he called it one himself. Then he couldn't control it and everyone got consumed...the showman capitalist and the audience, suggesting that there's no such thing as an innocent bystander when we perceive violence (the horses getting eaten) as entertainment. We do this. We've all witnessed something terrible on video, had a little 'oh my god, oh no' moment then shared the video with others. OJ was the only one who knew not to look at it. He was aware it was there but he approached it appropriately and carefully and was thus able to avoid being consumed by it. There was a lot of animal allegory too but mostly I think it was about how we need to stop engaging with real disasters they way we engage with media entertainment. Like....we memed the January 6th insurrection...there's something wrong with that.
True. I think on the surface this could be a critique of Hollywood, but it could also carry over to social media, politics, and 24 hr News.

Would you say the TMZ guy represents us a society? We tend to pull out our phones when something happens rather then find a solution. He didn't care about himself, just his camera.
@@columbusthomasiii2820 I think different characters represent different kinds of people, who all ultimately succumb to the same folly of being drawn in by the spectacle. Absolutely, the tmz guy is representative of many...I think of Worldstar, cringe complications, Karen freakouts...Jake Paul...there is certainly a type that will displace their human decency for video content. This would be the most ridiculed and satirical of us. However, there's also the film maker who also lost his life because he couldn't put his camera down. Perhaps a more noble pursuit, being willing to die for your art...but he fully intended to produce that video. If he survived, would he have kept it to himself or required the validation that accompanies getting those once in a lifetime shots? It gives performance artist...it gives houdini...and Instagram/Snapchat tbh. Why can't we be proud of art that's never seen? And then there's keke palmer's character, who arguably had her head on the straightest (aside from OJ) and she was just as equally determined to get her picture of the monster. She couldn't just accept that she'd experienced a crazy thing and hold that within herself as a secret...it gives "pics or it didn't happen." And of course the tech guy was serving conspiracy theory. Some of us chase spectacle because we're so empty inside that we delude ourselves into believing that idk real life isn't interesting enough. Others do so because real life doesn't feel real enough. Still others want proof that they're lives happened at all. Everyone except for OJ was operating on an external locus of control. I'd argue that because OJ had a strong internal basis he was able to connect with the 'spectacle' on a much more profound level. They were in relation to each rather than separated by the need to capture and share what was happening between them.
Yes, I especially realized this with the TMZ guy and his obsession/brainwashing with needing things to be recorded so much that it was more important than his own life.

Commented this on another video and it seems we’re all curious as to the symbolism of the standing up shoe. Ricky was fixated on the shoe as he watched Gordy attack everyone. I think it was a literal representation of the phrase “waiting for the other shoe to drop”.
Ricky was awaiting what he believed was a seemingly inevitable event, for Gordy to kill him as well. This whole scene also happening in the middle of act 2 makes me think it was also a representation for the audience, as we were waiting for an explanation on the UFO (UAP). And then as Gordy is killed, and we learn the true nature of the ufo, the other shoe has dropped

It's a sci fi thriller imo
My theory is that the monster is a metaphor for an abusive system. With the supporting narrative of Gordy's sitcom incident, it points most specifically toward Hollywood but can be used as a metaphor for any such system, including systems that exploit and abuse women and children, or systems that oppress minorities. The line that solidifies that theory for me is when OJ says regarding the monster: "I don't think it eats you unless you look at it."
When confronted by evidence of an abusive system, so many of us choose to "look away" rather than grapple with the ugly truth and confront it. These abusive systems tend to cloak themselves behind a veneer of normality: in the case of the monster, an unassuming cloud in the sky, in the case of Gordy, a beloved sitcom. OJ literally "turns a blind eye" to the monster to survive. Only at the end, does he engage and confront the monster to let his sister escape.
The protagonists spend much of the film trying to capture it on tape because just as with these powerful abusive systems, the media and the public begin to pay attention only when there is undeniable proof (and often on tape). Time and again, the impact of the monster is explained away as something more innocuous, such as a propeller plane throwing trash, or a flash flood that claimed the lives of 40+ people.
And just like an abusive system, the monster has ways to shut down any attempts to capture evidence of its reality. The monster uses an EMP effect, while abusive systems use their power, the complicity of others, and the legal system to shut down anyone who tries to reveal its ugly truth. Just look at how Harvey Weinstein, Jeffrey Epstein, Donald Trump, and other powerful people have used such methods to protect their abuses.
Finally, Jupe is the thread that holds it together. In the Gordy flashback, the chimp seems to connect with Jupe, both victims of the abusive system. As a child actor, he was exploited by his parents and Hollywood, just like the chimp. He is staring at a shoe that doesn't drop. He was always waiting for "the other shoe to drop" to reveal the truth of this exploitive system that ultimately destroyed Gordy. He seemed to empathize with Gordy in that scene and might have even fantasized about tearing that system down just like Gordy did. But ultimately, the shoe never drops, and Jupe himself becomes part of that exploitive system. He frames the undropped shoe and places it in a memorial for the incident which he further capitalizes on by charging others to see it. He buries the memory and embraces a sanitized SNL version of the incident. He becomes part of that system by literally feeding live horses to the animal, and making his own children part of the show. And in the end, it ultimately consumes him too.
The TMZ man represents how the media plays into this system of abuse by capitalizing on the spectacle. Rather than trying to expose the monster, all he wanted to do was capture it to use it for financial gain, not to reveal the truth and destroy the system.
Only when Emerald could finally capture the reality of the monster in a photograph, does the monster unravel. The spectacle was too large for others to ignore any longer.

I'm REALLY certain OJ survived the encounter. The movie made it clear that the flag was still attached to Lucky. He just needed to lure the alien away from Em enough for the electric bike to run. You know as soon as the alien got close enough to eat OJ that flag would have deterred it immediately as it did earlier.

My biggest issue is if the alien went scorched earth and lost its mind, why would the tiny little flags deter it still, but then it FINALLY ate the giant "Supe" balloon that it obviously saw then entire time it lived in the valley. Also.. the Supe ballon was anchored by like 5 LONGER strands of flags. This one doesn't check out. But I hope he lived.....
i saw reviews not understanding the correlation between the gordys side story and the main plot, i believe rickys character felt he could tame the ufo bc he felt he was able to survive gordys rage when he was a child, and maybe even felt he has some type of taming ability due to Gordy giving him a fist bump, which gave him a sense of confidence.
overall i feel this is his best overall movie , everything was great and the movie had everything suspense , fear , unsettling scenes , disturbing scenes , light comedy , great acting and fantastic sound.
I have another theory for Gordy, you notice how the horses would suddenly act crazy or violent whenever the ufo was possibly near. I think that's what caused Gordy's rage.

I kept thinking about the idea of using a "monster" and then destroying it when it is no longer of use. They loved the alien and Gordy but killed both when they could no longer profit. I love how much there is to analyze in the movie!!!
I really think “emerald” had a significant meaning too. If we think about it, some scenes had coins falling out of the sky. Green signifies money and the emerald is green. As well as keke wearing a green shirt and seen a lot of the times by the green dancers. The hole from the “ufo” also appeared to be green and shaped like the emerald ring keke was wearing. Also the emerald stone is considered the “lucky” stone.

This movie was such a fresh take on UFO abduction thrillers. Seriously the best I’ve seen in a long time.
In the fiction of this movie, I wanted to know how mature the creature was. Was it a baby, growing and changing as it ate? Or was it "grown" already and just started becoming more and more bold as it staked it claim to the land?
Also, what if there were more?
I somehow find myself falling deeper into those questions than the ending itself.
One thing I don't see talked about enough is the sound design. I loved it here.
I was hoping in the end, they would pull back to a wide shot of the land through the clouds, revealing more UFO/Creatures. I love the haunting sound it made when it flew as the people and horses inside of it were screaming and being digested. The shot of the UFO from within as the Jupiter's Claim audience was being sucked up into the mouth was badass!
I loved the sound design too! I loved that the monster really didn't make it's own sounds, you just heard the sounds of it's victims as it passed. Was very eery. (Kind of reminded me of the bear monster from Annihilation.)
The sound design in theaters worked incredibly well. I was actually anxious because of the sounds and “wow” of it all. When the beast took the whole audience and it gave a small glimpse inside its stomach was probably the scariest thing all year. Not because I was actually afraid but because of the realization this thing wasn’t a machine. Made me feel like I was apart of the crowd in the stomach

I think OJ is alive. During the face off with the alien, the alien was opening up and showing its green inside, much like a peacock opens its tail, or how some animals try to appear bigger. This made me think of dominance displays. OJ looking at the alien in its eye and not backing down, as well as having the colorful strand of flags behind him, discouraged the alien from taking him. I think OJ won the dominance display and the alien decided to move on to a weaker prey.
Edit: I KNOW he's shown at the end of the movie, guys. 7:25 brings up the possibility of him being a vision.

He even said you don’t look into a predators eyes without intent. Oj laid out the groundwork with the help of his sister when Jean jacket swallowed the fake horse with the flags. Training horses is similar. Although there has to be mutual respect. Keke on the bike made Jean jacket chase her because they didn’t have a understanding like oj did with Jean jacket. It’s weird in alien covenant David has a quote when a new chest burster is born “blow on a horses nose and it will be yours forever” when it’s killed he is beyond upset and yells “ it trusted me”.

This film was so freaky as the alien seemed like a tripod from war of the worlds with the peoples baskets but to know that It was the alien, didn’t expect it at all.
in a way, the tripod is somewhat of a living creature. there’s scenes that show that it’s biomechanical.

I think it's also interesting how the sounds of balloons popping are. There seem to be significant events that are marked. The balloon pops, and the ape goes wild, a balloon pops, and the ape is dead. A balloon pops, and Jean Jacket is dead.

I follow a chimp sanctuary. They have trouble on Instagram dealing with comments from people from PETA who think chimps should not be in cages at all, mot even a sanctuary, even though they have been in cages all their lives and could not survive in the wild VS people going "they'll rip your face off". I loved this movie, but that whole bit just had me feeling dread for the sanctuaries who are going to have to put up with that stuff again. They know that they can be violent, are territorial, and they know that they can have volatile tempers. Which is why sanctuary caretakers never go in the enclosures with them. But they also know that they can be loving, have friends, And moments of kindness. So this part of the movie made me sad because there's going to be another whole wave of "they'll rip your face off"

Watched it twice and I enjoyed it more the 2nd time. The twist on the UFO was cool and cinematography was excellent. Characters were also likable and the hidden themes were interesting. Gave me Jaws vibes!

my theory has something to do with how the creature affects electricity. if i'm not mistaken there's energy in clouds, and maybe it staying in that cloud overtime caused it to die out and just not move anymore. kinda like taking the "energy atoms" out of it idk

I think the UFO can control gravity or manipulate gravity in someway (I.e sucking up people etc…) so it can also make things stand still. In the Gordy scene , we see the womens shoe standing straight up, signifying the UFO might have been around.
@@cashboycampton3053 the alien cannot manipulate gravity. Its ability to eat is just giant a vacuum and wind tunnel that it creates.
It was also not present during the Gordy scenes because the studio had power the entire time. There is no timeline given as to when it even arrived to earth in the first place

My absolute favorite aspect is the whole "It's not a ship" aspect brought up by OJ. And he's absolutely right.
The fact that "Jean Jacket" noticeably "surveys & retreats" multiple times throughout the film and especially the "blood rain" scene. It's literally like a tiger bringing It's victims to it's target as a "you're next" type of thing.
Lastly, the fact that this is not in ANY aspect a "film about aliens". It's an animal that is Not Of Planet Earth.

There is what used to be a well known story from 2009, where a woman was viciously attacked by a pet Chimpanzee that she had had for years. It nearly ripped her entire face off. At the time, news outlets played the audio of the 911 call from the other person which involved a lot of hysterical screaming. You could hear the terror.
This may have been an influence on the story.
Not only that, but the woman revealed her disfigured face from under her veil for the first time on Oprah.
If I remember correctly, it wasn’t actually her pet. It belonged to her friend and she came over to her house to help out because the chimp was acting weird.

Steven Yeuns characters red cowboy outfit also has a UFO on the back and little alien head shapes (very noticeable so i’m sure a lot of people saw it) but i couldn’t figure out what the white flower shape was supposed to be until the alien opened up and looked exactly like it which i thought was a great detail

One thing I’ve been thinking of is the prolonged screams of the people who end up in Jean Jacket. It is almost as if it has adapted to exploit humans’ natural instinct to look towards screaming (in order to assess possible threats) as a sort of bait. Either that or it just likes to savor its meal 😂
I mean, it's not just humans who have an evolutionary adaptation to fixate on the screams of injured creatures for the paradoxical anxiety of the threat of a nearby predator, and the comfort that you're not the one it's eating.
It's amazing how well it works; something about it just triggers some kind of leftover primal instinct or something because those screams in the movie were really disturbing and I was just so fixated on them. So, hearing those screams like that out in the wild would definitely trigger the same thing and cause us to fixate on them. Clever, realistic writing.
My thoughts on the movies main themes were that it symbolized the exploitation and greed of our modern society, not just Hollywood, but we as common folk are influenced highly by Hollywood nonetheless. The constant surveillance, the exploitation of black people/minorities in the industry, animal exploitation and cruelty, and all for what? Greed. Power. Why were their keys falling out of the sky? Stolen land perhaps? Colonialism? Why was money falling out of the sky? Capitalism and greed? So many symbols and interpretations, loved this film!
I love how it communicates that all our material possessions won't go with us when we die, and will boil down to nothing more than bits of metal falling from the sky
The movie gave me the idea of exploitation. Ricky exploited the saucer the way Gordys home exploited that chimp. That section was included (I believe) to show a mirroring of what happens when exploiting nature is just well… unnatural. Ricky was the catalyst. (This is just my theory of what it means I may be wrong lol)
I totally agree!! The movie make it very clear that even the most domesticated animals are still animals, they still have instincts and will never behave as humans so the mirror between both exploitations and the fact that Jupe was in both of the events says that he believes that he can "tame" and connect with both creatures, which we know it was impossible!
The alien in my opinion definitely was able to utilize “free energy” to make itself fly. I loved the different phases the alien went through, the UFO/stingray without a tail shape, a balloon/pufferfish, a dragonfly, and a mantis shrimp.

Idk why, but this stood out to me the most with Gordy's Rampage. As the camera pans in, it captures the 3 Panavision cameras that look kind of like the aliens Jupe tries to sell to his audience. If it was intentional, the trauma he withstood that day might have been what fueled his obsession with those Viewers, constantly feeling under watch by unseen eyes in the midst of a vicious animal. The cinematography and Peele's attention to detail would lead me to believe this is the case (though if not, I still think it's a cool takeaway)
There is something that we still don't know about the TMZ guy's death. He had a helmet on.....his eyes weren't visible, then why does it kill him and not OJ who is right beside him. Does the mirror like finish of his helmet mess with its brain.......does the brief reflection of OJ's eyes on his helmet trigger it ?? Answer to this question IMO will give us more details about Jean Jacket's behaviour.
I came away with a message about the environment given that the thing the alien doesn’t like and ultimately kills it is plastic. It’s what Angel wraps himself him along with the barbed wire, what Emerald is draped in when racing into the theme park to release the giant ballon, and what OJ earlier release from the saddle bag on the horse so when he appear to re-emerge at the end it makes sense. At least to me. Respect for animals AND our planet. But I also see the Hollywood chewing up and spitting out thing too.

An Easter egg I think I caught. If you look at 2:20, the 3 white things with the 2 dots was probly where the dad got the inspiration to make the alien faces (after being traumatized by the chimp). And he ended up having 3 kids and they dressed up in the alien costumes their dad made.

But Nope was about respecting animals. Someone point this out in another comment section. The Gordie massacre and the Haywood Ranch were comparing two different ways to handle an animal in show biz.
Gordie the Chimp turned out to be one of several chimps used in the film so they never used the same one. That's why this Gordie snapped when the balloon popped.
Meanwhile OJs Family Ranch, showed us the correct way to handle an animal and that is to respect it. Don't make eye contact, respect the beast, assert your dominance when necessary, always give it a reward for good behavior and show it kindness overall.
What Jupe did however is essentially the same thing I saw a crazy old guy do in Pacific Rim Black when he thought he tamed Kaiju. Jupe thought that just bc he fed Jean Jacket meant they were friends. Same with the old guy, the Kaiju came whenever he had their food ready. But when the two of them didn't have the food their "friends" wanted, they got eaten.
And that's the lesson here. Don't be the guy that just feeds the animal. Be the one who befriends and respects it.

I found it very entertaining how chill OJ was during the entire film. Not a single emotion showed.
I loved it and plan to see it again this weekend. There are so many great messages in a Jordan Peele movie that people seem simple when they complain they want original content that doesn't preach to them, but then can't pick up on the messages when the movie delivers.
I felt that this one was much more simplified compared to Us

The acting and dialogue were both phenomenal, the music was amazing and so was the sound editing. The visuals of the film were beautiful and I am not exaggerating when I say that I have never been that afraid while watching a movie as I was during one specific scene. This movie made me feel things, and it grabbed my attention from the opening quote until the final shot.

I just wanted to leave this rant here, because it's something I've been think about since I watched the movie, which is Jupe's characterization. A lot of people call him arrogant, which I think is definitely a piece of it, but at the same time he is seen practicing the speech and spectacle that he wants to bring to the show. A lot of the Jupiter's claim seems to have been run by his wife. I almost wonder if it was at her urging that this whole show is set up. The trauma that Jupe experienced as a child I think definitely affected him, and I'm not sure that taming UFO was only an act of hubris or if he was urged to do it by an outside influence as well as a desperate bid for lost fame. I'm not really sure, but I don't think it was all arrogance at having survived the Chimp encounter.
When I saw all of the news crew people at the end of the film I thought that there was going to be a major twist that this whole entire thing was just a movie on a film set
I think my favorite part was how it used the clouds to hide as it approached like a stalking predator! (Honorable mention is when it showed the audience in the inside it was super unsettling)
I think that the monster actually is Hollywood. Stardom and fame, very specifically in film runs all throughout the movie. The brother and sister are literally trying to capture their piece of it without being consumed.

Which is also why the filmmaker was willing to die for the 'perfect shot'. He was an artist.

@@Buhguul6 I didn't say it was a good movie. In my opinion, it's a GREAT movie. Does it have its flaws? Yes, what movie doesn't? Now, our taste in movies could be totally different. It all depends on what you are looking for within that movie. I found what I was looking for, and much more. It's all subjective.

Once the aliens were just kids in costumes I was upset but I thought maybe it’ll be revealed later. I was more looking for a classic alien movie thriller just remastered and done correctly. Like signs but better.

Ahhh ok. I can respect that and see where you are coming from. I was actually happy the way that Alien barn scene took place. Jordan promised us a spectacle, and if the invaders were those 1950 B flick movie aliens, I would of walked out the theater. When that creature was hovering around as a UFA and morphed into Jean Jacket, it blew my mind. It was truly a sight to behold.... A spectacle.

@@TimeKeeperBris Not only does the creature eat whatever it can get its tendrils on, but it shows complete disrespect to a family just trying to make a living. My cousin and one of his friends saw that movie. The audience howled when that happened. Crapped on someone and did not even perform a courtesy flush.
Another cool thing is that Jean Jacket came earlier for the sacrificial horse. Even in animals, it is known that when given food at certain times, animals will start to come earlier and earlier over a long period of time and even shows signs of excitement and anticipation. Jean jacket came about an hour earlier than expected and came up all the way to the stage area as opposed to from a distance-- as noted by Jupe trying to instigate Lucky to get him to run off into the desert.
Just left the movie theater and I loved it. Jordan Peele knocks it out of the park again🤩🤟
To me it was 100% a giant flying cuttle fish.
Cuttle fish glide through the water looking like a saucer. They point there legs as one side of the saucer while their rear is the other side. Everything remains in place minus small barely visible rear fins that propel the saucer formed cuttle fish with amazing helicopter like hovering or jet like speed. The alien was very similar.
They can change their bodies shape and color in the blink of an eye. One second blending in to a bright blue current, while an instant later appearing as a black rock. Truly a sight to behold. The alien was very similar.
They have two large grabber legs that they keep hidden inside their other shorter legs. When the time is right they shoot out these much longer legs and grab their prey. The alien used a similar mild tornado suction to grap it's prey from a distance..
Cuttle fish get their pray to stare at them by using a series of hypnotizing color changes. While their prey stares at the changing colors, it's long hidden arms suddenly grab the prey. The alien used this exact same method at the end of the movie.
They can look like brown rocks too. Good call though it is sorta cuttlefish looking. Btw those things are venemous
The pacing of this movie is absolutely incredibly. Its not too fast and easy for audiences to keep their attention. Theres no cliché scenes where the government gets involved and the movie does those fast-paced dialogues with the u.s military and the president. Its just OJ, his sister and their crew
i’m pretty sure he’s alive not only him being on lucky the only horse to survive but if you recall in the beginning, his dad said to him “they gotta bring us back for the sequel” so i feel like it was really him alive at the end
Loved the foreshadowing of the balloons popping while Gordy was rampaging on the TV set.
I do believe "out yonder" means he kicked the bucket.
This was a great movie!! The story was spot on and Jordan Peele never lets us down!!
I f*cking loved this movie. Peele is definitely a very skilled director. Interested to see if he goes more mainstream or less. I’ll be watching either way.
That UFO was terrifying.
I absolutely loved this film. Second favorite peele film now. Loved how the final form of the alien is a mix of a jellyfish/squid. I got the connection to Steven characters immediately with him trying to tame nature and it not working out.

One thing that was very specifically included in the progression of the movie was that OJ made one of the spheres they had on set that spooked Lucky. I fully expected him to use it on Jean Jacket to confuse it and possibly get a reaction like Luckys. Maybe it gets confused and slams into the hilltop injuring or killing it. But the rest of the film played out and it wasn’t seen again. Peele is very deliberate with his details so I still don’t get that part
the movie felt like a fever dream i cant be the only one.
