I crave Karen’s low notes! I rewind, replay all the time. I can’t overstate how her voice affects me. It’s very soothing. Apparently most people feel the same way.

Karen’s voice was a three octave contralto. .

😍 This is so beautiful, so natural, so wonderful.
She doesn't scream her cords sore, shows off her "skills", basically jerks off into the microphone.
A lot of female singers make my throat sore, like real physical pain. Pulling out all the stops, just randomly whisteling at the end of every line, won't sing one word without pressing a whole octave into two syllables, that feel like 50 but still is the one word, dragging every note through every register possible to show off riffs and runs; and also annoy.

I’m guessing that Karen Carpenter is one of the following:
    A. lyric contralto
    B. mezzo alto
    C. Dugazon mezzo-soprano
    D. Soprano sfogato
Karen Carpenter’s voice was not weighty or super low like a true contralto, but her low notes were rich enough to mimic a contralto. She could be either of the above.

I think Karen’s voice is a three octave contralto.

Ok, but her timbre was neither manly enough nor harsh enough to match that of a true contralto, which is why she could possibly be either of the other three voice types I listed. Her vocal range was B2-Bb5, but Richard wouldn’t let her sing any lower than D3 when it came to lead vocals on studio and concert performances. The only time she was allowed to sing lower than that was on backing vocals or in impromptu performances.

Interesting comment, lots to think about.
I don't know as much about it as you do. But Google says Karen was a 3 octave contralto. Ha! What does Google really know?!
If Richard didn't want Karen to sing below D3, I would have loved to hear that conversation, his reasoning, and her response!
As you said, she didn't sound manly. She certainly did NOT sound manly. She was soooo smooth and soothing. In my fantasies, Karen sings for me in my arms. Certain soothing notes melt my heart. But don't call me weird. Every man feels the same way. Admit it, you do too. 😃

Absolutely! I just turned 25 years old this past May 10th and have been listening to the Carpenters since I was 3 1/2 years old. First it was “(There’s No Place Like) Home for the Holidays” followed by“Solitaire” and then “Sing”. I was introduced to the rest of the Carpenters’ catalog a few years after that.
