    I often get asked what I would do if I were president, so I decided to make a video about it. The president is not a king or dictator and has limited powers. What most people really mean when they ask this question is "What would you do if you could change anything." So, we'll just pretend I am super-president. Part 2 is about military reform, budgeting, forming a new branch, VA, Veteran benefits, US Highway infrastructure, net neutrality, congressional term limits, campaign finance reform, WMDs, the War on Drugs, Marijuana, vacation time, paternity leave, and police brutality. The gameplay is some fun Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare matches.

      We'll need to start a Kickstarter hoping to get $2 billion in order to fund Drift0r's campaign, then.
      While I like hearing Drift0r's opinions on these issues, being President isn't being king. Presidents honestly don't have a lot of a power. Most of it lies in the Congress. So while we can say we wish Drift0r would be President all day... even if he did there wouldn't be much he could do. :( Sorry to be a party pooper, it just seems to be a *very* common misconception among Americans.

      @barcelona2170 9 років тому +2

      John Yes that is true. But they volunteer because other people don't have the balls to do so. So whatever help we can give vets should be done no questions asked. Also, technically speaking there is still the possibility of a draft happening. If anything were to go to hell (worse than what our country is right now)then we would have to go into the draft. That is what the selective service is for. Even though I signed up for the selective service because I am an only child I would not be allowed to serve. But I would make my parents sign a waver to serve which is also a possibility. Any way, just because they know what they are getting into doesn't mean they should not get help for what they go through after their service. It is their service that allow you to make an ignorant comment like that.

I'm saying that those guys know what they're signing up, I hate when people say "send them to their deaths". No, alright. Our military is the most professional and well trained in the world. They know how to do their jobs and will most certainly hold their own. Its not like we just kick them out of plane and say "alright, see ya. survive.

    I agree 100% with the drug issues. I've seen murderers walk free and pot dealers get life in prison. Adults should be allowed to do whatever recreational drugs they want. If alcohol and nicotine (not to mention thousands of abused prescription drugs) are legal, why isn't weed?

      ***** I believe the whole "marijuana is a gateway drug" idea to be a myth (possibly spread by the DARE program). Caffeine is a very popular stimulant drug. That doesn't necessarily mean that anyone who drinks 2 cups of coffee every day is going to switch to cocaine when coffee and soda aren't enough.

    I use to be completely on board with legalizing Marijuana. However, after talking with some former users who were against it, I'd wait another 25-50 years and do as much research as we have on cigarettes before I'd give it the okay. Remember 60 some years ago Cigarettes were considered safe and had no restrictions.

    • @saxboss1
      @saxboss1 9 років тому +24

      Yes and I am sure it is fair to tell prisoners facing minor possession crimes (there's 40,000 of them with no other crimes committed) to just wait another 25-50 years before we make any changes. Enough research has been done to prove that you cannot overdose on marijuana. So why are we jailing them for participating in something safer than alcohol? People have been smoking marijuana since the Chinese dynasties and there's been no record of an over dose, what more long term research would you like? Cigarettes are legal which ARE proven to cause lung cancer, so even if weed could cause lung cancer, why should that stop its legalization while many other legal substances are far more dangerous?

    • @MrMalditor
      @MrMalditor 9 років тому +2

      This is very much how I feel about it. I think I even saw some stuff that showed tobacco was given for medicinal purposes not all that terribly long ago. I just don't agree with making more mind altering things legal. There are enough health and safety issues with what is legal now without adding more things to it. That is outside of the fact that I've seen drugs destroy family members, and not because they got caught with them but because of what the drugs themselves did.

    • @Shadylikeatree
      @Shadylikeatree 9 років тому +7

      Mr Peace
      Decriminalizing it to the point that it's basically a slap on the wrist I think is the way to go in the near future. It's much easier to keep it illegal and change penalties than to legalize it and then re-illegalize it if there's some lasting terrible effects we discover.

    • @Shadylikeatree
      @Shadylikeatree 9 років тому

      Mr Peace
      Also who said anything about overdosing? You can't overdose on cigarettes. They're still like the worst thing that's legal to consume in that quantity. I think cigarettes should be banned too but that'll never happen.

    • @Soff1859
      @Soff1859 9 років тому +2

      First of all, there has been a lot of research done on pot. Of course one can always do more, but we can't continue a terribly damaging policy for decades or centuries until we have 100% confirmed every single detail.
      Anyway pot maybe harmless or a little harmful or even fairly harmful. But the substance is certainly not as harmful as spending billions on locking people up, destroying their professional and social lives and thus forcing them into a life of crime, as well as messing up their health even more (by only making unclean drugs available) and, thus, raising medical costs for the whole society.

    War on Drugs is the largest "war" failure the US has ever undertaken, yes including Vietnam. The United States is the worlds leading jailer with prison population higher than Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia, and is in fact has the largest prison population in the history of human civilization. We lead in both total population and in prisoners per 100,000 citizens statistics. The amount of people that are put away for ridiculous amounts of time for drug possession is off the scales. One half of the prisoners in jail that serve over 1 year are for drug possession. We spend more on the prison populations per inmate in the US than on educational system per student IN EVERY STATE across the board. It is ridiculous how many people are in our prisons because of petty "crimes" like owning marijuana. The War on Drugs puts away so many impoverished minorities that it is not even funny. Our justice is broken that it takes 100 times as much crack cocaine as powder cocaine to receive the same sentence. Judges on powder cocaine cases are forced to levy the minimum sentences on these people which are at least 5 or 10 years for a tiny tiny amount of powder cocaine because they are mandatory minimums. War on Drugs was a humongous failure.

      Some additional information (what you said is all true):
      -The US jails significantly more people per capita than North Korea, Iran or China.
      -The US prison population is actually higher than both Chinas and Indias, even though those countries have about 4 times more people in total and China is a dictatorship.
      -The US incarcerates around 4900 black males per 100'000. Apartheid South Africa jailed around 800-900 at their worst times.
      -Whites are actually a little more likely to use and sell drugs than any other race. Yet Blacks and Latinos get locked up for it like 500% more often or so.

      Agreed, I say just expand them rather than create a new branch. There are so many law enforcement and intelligence agencies now. We really need to reduce the number of agencies rather than creating more. When I retired from the Army we got a catalog of job agencies to help us. There were well over 100 places to go for job help. Streamlining this would make it much better.

    The fixers are an awesome idea. Also this branch should include a police force. Because marines etc. are trained for combat but today policing is pretty much their main job. So include a unit that looks more like civilian police in the US with normal cars not APCs or tanks, pistols and pepper sprays instead of LMGs and rocket launchers etc. Keep the combat units in the bases as backups whereever possible and use actual police where it's peaceful enough. If their job is policing, they should be dressed and trained for that job.
    Also about the drugs I'd legalise or at least decriminalise everything. Our conception of drugs and addiction is actually far off in many cases (i.e. chemically pure heroin does not damage your body and countries like Portugal or my country Switzerland have had great success with providing addicts with clean heroin and support programmes instead of punishment). If you're interested in the topic I recommend you read "Chasing the scream" by Johann Hari. Or just watch one of his interviews on youtube to get the short version.
    Btw in Switzerland everyone gets 4 weeks of paid vacation, old and young workers get 5 and in some countries it's even up to 6 weeks for everyone if I remember correctly. So one week is still crazy little ;)

      Soff1859 The "Fixers" already exist within the US Military. It's the engineering department. Mainly in the Army branch. This is something that the media and the world tend to ignore and bury to make the US and military forces seem more destructive and almost evil. The US military always treys to rebuild what they destroy. That was the very first thing that they did when they landed on main land of Japan, and why they stayed so long in Europe after the war ended. It is harder for them to do this with the recent wars because they don't have a uniformed enemy to watch for when they are trying to rebuild things such as roads. Sense modern day terrorists tend to favor road side bombs, it would be easy for them to come in during off work hours and plant an explosive in those areas.
      As for the Policing. That is what MP's (Military Police) are for. They dress different from regular soldiers so they stand out and can be seen. They are also trained from Basic training to act more like police than regular soldiers. The majority of the time they only have a side arm (Pistol) and they have it mostly for show. They only time they have a rifle is if they feel a situation or environment might be too dangerous.

    • @Soff1859
      @Soff1859 9 років тому

      Devon Kirkham I know there are engineers. But that's not exactly the same. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think their main job is to build and maintain infrastructure for the US-military instead of local civilians. Also the fixer branch would send a very different message to the locals. The fixers would be more like an NGO paid for by the government (what a paradox) and less like a military unit. It should be made clear that once the fixers come in it's not war time anymore, but rebuilding time. And it should be made clear that they are not an occupying but a helping force. They should not be wearing combat gear, have distinct camo from the other branches and should only be carrying sidearms, if at all. That would have a large psychological effect on the local population (=potential rebels).
      I also know there is a military police. But their main job again is policing US military personnel. They're there to prevent corruption, drug use, war crimes, theft from bases etc. Also the MP is to small anyway. That's why patrols in Afghanistan and Iraq were usually made up of infantry, not MP. The fixer police would be different. It should have a size similar to the infantry, so tens or hundreds of thousands. Their only job would be to police the locals. Their weaponry would depend on the situation. So it doesn't mean they shouldn't be carrying weapons. It means they should be carrying weaponry appropriate to handle ordinary crime and riots, not weapons appropriate to fight a russian tank battalion. So shotguns with rubber rounds, tear gas launchers, pistols, tasers, some assault rifles but no LMGs or bazookas. Again the psychological effect is different. When I see 2 police officers in blue shirts walk towards me I don't feel threatened. But if I saw 10 cops wearing camo and massive flak vests and carrying LMGs and assault rifles I would feel threatened.

      I live in a safe suburb outside of Austin, the cops are terrible. I think that because they haven't really seen any real problems they overreact to tiny things. so yeah cops things are a huge problem, some are crooked which sucks, but people claim police brutality all the time and cameras can put those cases to rest really quick

    • @tjk8118
      @tjk8118 9 років тому

      No matter where you are in the world, having video recording of police officers in any situation is helpful. Not only does it help with corruption but it saves a ton of time and money. People who get arrested try and get out of it by saying the cop did this or the cop didn't do that. Video evidence of an entire arrest is just an efficient way to save time and money in court proceedings. I'm pretty sure that's the main reason we have cameras on cop cars. So criminals can't claim something happened that actually didn't. There's corrupt cops everywhere, including France. I mean, have you see The Missing? I'm kidding of course but it's a French/English TV show I recently watched that was really good, and had a corrupt French cop.

    Great vid, although the only thing I'd have to disagree with would be making "The Fixers" an separate branch of the military. I would rather have each soldier end their service with being a Fixer for a while so that not only would each soldier learn some new useful skills, but the act would also serve as some type of rehabilitation.

      There is a huge difference between allowing adults to use drugs and supporting giving them to kids. Thats like saying "a your pro gun? I guess you think we should shoot toddlers in the face then".
      But yes i wouldn't mind if people could order heroin from a catalogue, as long as it is taxed, the purity is controlled, it's made sure that they're over 18 and driving under the influence is banned.
      Btw countries like Portugal and Switzerland have had huge success at driving down the number of addicts and drug related problems (such as crime and health problems) by providing addicts with clean heroin, needles and safe places to inject.

      No no no no no! You shouldn't be paid enough to live on a minimum wage job. Minimum wage is jobs that require minimum skills and the pay should be treated as such. Minimum wage jobs are for young teens who have little if any experience working and who need a little gas and spending money to hang with their goofy friends. They are not meant for someone to make a career out of.

      I used to think that but at the same time the reason some people smoke it is because they think they are cool that they are doing something illegal. • @devonkirkham8734
      @devonkirkham8734 9 років тому

      Mercury The primary use, sells, and marketing of shotguns is for hunting. They have an universal hunting purpose from foul to big game. It's a much more practical hunting tool than a rifle. Plus, they are a lot safer then a hunting rifle because they don't have nearly the amount of range that a rifle can get. Same thing goes for a semi auto rifle (I'm guessing that is what you mean by regular). The "regular hunting rifle" is a bolt action long barrel firearm. These are a lot more accurate at all ranges and can be more dangerous than any other firearm. The bolt action hunting rifle is the father of modern day sniper rifles and could/is used as one.
      I'm guessing you believe in pistols for self/home defense. Which would be the ideal choice, but if you had to use a long gun, a shotgun or semi auto would be a much better choice than your bolt "hunting rifle." Mostly for rate of fire, mobility, and put down power.
      The reason why people use firearms to kill each other is because it is the easiest and cleanest way to do so. Obtaining the firearm might be more difficult than any other choice method of murder, but it is the one that requires the least amount of skill to accomplish your goal. Therefore, if you were to take away all firearms, then people will either find another way to commit this crime, or find away to obtain the firearms illegally. Plus it is a lot easier to see someone coming at you when they are wielding a shotgun or semi auto rifle because they are so hard to conceal and have that limited range and accuracy. Compared to a pistol that could be concealed at all times, even when being fired. Or a "hunting rifle" or bolt action rifle that could be used as a sniper rifle and the victim would never see the suspect or firearm.

I could very easily make videos like these about the U.K., Canada, Australia, etc. and they would not look pretty. Every country has problems, no ones perfect. Fun fact for military spending :D
    The military spent $12,000 on a VAN that had no air conditioning, radio, or comfortable seats.
    The same exact brand was being sold for $9,000 WITH air conditioning, radio, and decent seats.
    Another one!
    I used to live on base, and the military contractors that had made the house totally under-built every home to the point were there were leaks in the roof. It is not as bad as the leak, as so much that we live IN A DESERT AND WE GET LEAKS.... IN THE ROOF?
    Pure military logic that had over priced rent and a contractor that only wanted to waist the tax payer's money.

    Man, you hit the nail on the head with basically every topic. I respect most of all your stance on the war on drugs and specifically the war was made to imprison black people and poor people. From where I'm from most people stereotype black people and poor people as drug addicts and sellers. Also another thing maybe you can touch on is how in prison there are ways to earn a degree or skill or trade, but it is not enforced so to speak. What I mean is that the system could care less whether you educate or rehabilitate yourself. So in turn, upon release, you have no skills and go back to what you were doing to get your sentence. Thanks Drift0r!!

    Drift0r i agree with pretty much everything that you said except for two things and here is my opinion. When it comes to making a state out of our territories I think financially and morally speaking it would make sense. However in the case of a territory like Puerto Rico, I don't think making them a state would be a plausible option. Now I know based on the last time the vote for Puerto Rico to become a state was almost "50-50" but a good portion of Puerto Ricans in my family (I am Puerto Rican) would much rather see Puerto Rico become a sovereign nation of its own. So multiply this by the number of people who actually didn't vote (there was a large amount of people who didn't vote). Second of all I think that we actually need the weopons that we have access too. This is basically what keeps other powerful countries from trying to attack our nation. While I think that it could end up in the wrong hands, I would rather take that chance then let another country attack ours without the ability to retaliate.

    I must say that I agree with EVERY SINGLE THING you pointed out, especially the absurd amount of money we spend on the military. A lot of that goes into things like new air craft carriers and jets that we simply do not need right now is wasted tax dollars that could go into things like rebuilding our infrastructure or school systems.

    Hey Drift0r, these commentaries are awesome. Just an idea: Have you considered staying a podcast to talk about these kinds of things? You could call it "yin yang", bring some people in to talk, and have different, intelligent opinions to each side of the story/ topic on hand. I dunno, just a suggestion.

    Military spending and budgets: I agree that cutbacks through optimization are needed. Some projects or similar cost far more than necessary (the same goes for gov agencies I believe) while some necessary things are skimmed past for various reasons.
    The "Fixers" would be similar to many military jobs that do those kinds of things already: Corps of Engineers and Signal Corps. spring to mind, but aren't the only ones in non-combat roles (or "Support Roles").
    I think that as far as the "Fixers" go, it may work to have that be the intent of "deployments" or mobilizations for the Reserves and National Guard units as it can provide practical training and experience for those soldiers in Support roles to create new infrastructure in the US or abroad (power systems, communications, Internet/networks, water, waste, architecture, transportation, etc.) in a practical manner.
    After all, the military almost literally has a job role for everything. Really. It's just that not everyone gets to do what they signed up for on a regular basis (Reserves and National Guard in particular).
    Not disagreeing or contradicting you in any way; just providing more ideas and input that may help with a better plan or understanding for anyone who bothers to read this.
