The deleterious effects of chemotherapy on heart function particualrly from the use of anthracyclines, but other broadly used cardiotoxic chemotherapy regimens, limits the use of these agents globally both in healthy as well as patients with cardiovascular complications. Since ROS production is one of the primary mechanisms by which cardiotoxic regimens (particularly anthracyclines) negatively impact on HCM vaibility, it comes as no surprise that exercise improves cardiovascular outcomes for cancer patients as exercise manages oxidative stress. Lee, you are discussing a very interesting and complex topic, and I personally believe it is essential to consider when providing anti-cancer therapy. Rates of cancer survivorship are inceasing concurrently with the increases in functional disability (or decreases in quality of life) associated with cardiotoxic chemotherapy. It is essential that patients have access to effective anti-cancer treatment while also reducing the long-term side effects associated with those therapies, so that this person may maintain their autonomy and function after a successful treatment.
