Hudson Jaxson - Did you know that Lake Ayer (far below Sea level) can be connected to the Ocean ? Seawater could flow in and out with the tides. Urban garden is best. On top of buildings, empty lots and your backyards. It will cost you a fortune to get water to the desert til it can sustain itself. The hole country has to be on board with this for it to work. But it's a real good idea.

Excellent documentary. Very inspirational. How can a simple man like Jadeth Payang (SP?) (29.30) have so much ecological insight while we, with our sophisticated education systems have no clue?

Great way to start for any of us who are near or affected by these problems. "A man who planted trees " is a wonderful story with the same premise. 38:00: Holy crap! In the middle of the desert to boot! Now that truly speaks of success! However there's got to be millions of places around the world where just damming water minimally would enrich the ecosystem all around it. And that's just one way to enrich it, that's mostly without an economical cost.
Wow! I found this so inspiring and deeply touching. We hear so much about deforestation and environmental degradation. So it's truly wonderful to see people like this who are developing new, sustainable models for fixing the mess,
Hi Wendy, Yes, there are a lot of initiatives worldwide trying to counter the environmental degradation. Sharing this inspriring information will hopefully help and lead to more sustainability.
Thank you, for a great video with lots of inspirational examples and initiatives. I believe that there's a beautiful opportunity to regreen large amounts of land that are laid bare right now.

Beautiful documentary-- fresh perspective on a hopeful future. We need to spread the word about the work of VPRO, seeding fruitful ideas into a human and natural community. Here are visionaries, but all with determination and perseverance. Production values are exceptional, from cinematic music to smoothly translated captions (for those who need them).
Next Sunday on vpro documentary we will publish the backlight documentary: Seed battles - The Doomsday Vault, about the seeds vault in Svalgard in Norway, the incredible project of Professor Cary Fowler. See you Sunday 9pm on vpro documentary!
A beautiful story of hope and love for our planet and global ecosystem. Like and share people. A few good people will become millions as the world takes notice of these high examples.
I don't understand the European policy to subsidize "farmers" for merely plowing the land. That policy should be changed. Why don't they subsidize based on production? Instead they are merely encouraging erosion and destroying the land further. That Indian man is a hero. The world needs more people like him. In China, they are in the process of restoring the Loes Plateau, an area the size of France that became degraded after centuries over mismanagement, and they are succeeding. As the world goes forth, we need more of these efforts, but instead we are seeing places like the US electing a president who couldn't care less about environmental issues. The only green he sees is money.
OK, haven't watched it yet, but first of all I want to thank vpro documentary for a small detail. You uploaded the clip in 2017 and actually managed to put the correct year when it was made in the title. BRAVO! Again, honestly, BRAVO. ..... I'll proceed watching the clip now.
Hello BusterXXXL Thank you for noticing it, and taking the time to write a review about it, we appreciate it greatly. What did you think of the documentary, then?
It was a hopeful message, that I enjoyed watching. Can't say too much about the content, as it is not exactly my area of expertise. You clearly steered away from all areas of political controversy, and there is certainly something to say about the Communist Party of China or Paul Kagame's treatment of political opposition. I think that editorial decision can be understood, as you wanting to concentrate on the possibilities of ecological restoration, but it still left me a bit at unease.
I didn't know any one was doing this on a large scale.. My dreamed has come true. One I see we need to and can do this in the U.S. people need to be sure to support and restore all of their native plants...cultivated and wild. It is now 2017, I wonder how this is Doing. I seriously believe the U.S. needs to revolutionize it's agriculture.

where does all the water come from, in my country (Australia) they have been growing food in desert areas for many years, The result has been a dried up river system (The Murray Darling basin) with loss of habitat, for many species, dying giant red gum trees and not enough water downstream to fill the lower lakes, the river mouth has even closed
Thanks, VPRO, for another great doc! I love your work. I wonder, though, how the irrigation and water supply worked in other regions. The 'Forest Man' in Assam seems to have no water troubles, but what did the community in China do? What is the project in Spain doing?
Great documentary many thanks to all production team. There is a Hadith (حدیث) that prophet Mohammed (PBUH) said, ((cultivation causes rain fall)) in the region. Thanks to all who has positive thinking. Our Afghanistan has more deserts we will change to a green sky انشاءالله

The people in this video, especially the man in India (who brought tears to my eyes), are doing what the Dutch man called "inspiration investment". Use the inspiration you feel watching this to make changes in your own life. Grow your own tomatoes in a bucket garden. Teach your children how to grow plants from seed. Plant a new tree in your back yard. Clean up the garbage in your neighbourhood. Discipline yourself to stop spending money on new new new everything. Separate your identity from your stuff, so you can be happy buying less. SPREAD THE WORD.

The man at 27:06 is infuriating. How can he blame the youth when he is single handedly screwing even the start of potential growth! It would be more beneficial to dig large holes to retain water than plowing thru land like that! The nerve this man has.
Hello Margarita and thank you for your comment. The subtitles are in the Closed Captions of the documentary, you just have to click on the CC button and use the caption settings to pick your subtitles from English, French or Spanish.
That said, all deserts are not candidates. The Precautionary Principle needs to be considered. For example, the Taklamakhan desert is the dust seed source for rainfall events in the western USA

How important was it to deliver water to this project / Could it survive without an input of water? I understand that the higher the Co2 concentration in the air the less water plants need. Any comments?
I disagree with everyone saying we need to green our deserts. Deserts that have been there for thousands of years, are there for a reason. The amount of life and prosperity in deserts is more than meets the eye. We need to RE-green encroaching deserts and areas that have been affected by human mismanagement. There’s a big difference.
There are huge semi arid regions not only in Rajasthan and Gujarat but also in inner areas of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and I guess Karnataka. When we travel by train through Tamil Nadu we can see how much sparse the vegetation is. They look like land on the verge on turning into desert. Kerala is blessed with rivers but almost no rivers flow from Western ghats flow into Tamil Nadu. We need Sekeem model in these areas to make it profitable and bring greenery to the area which in turn will bring animals and humans back to these areas again.
So basically, when you dont want to farm a piece if land anymore you need to replant the forest that was supposed to be there in the first place, or the land will erode and eventually turn into a desert.. it should be laws about that, that the forest must be replanted when you no longer use the land.

I love the concept of regreening deserts, it has such a positive impact in so many ways.

2019 ...how is the Ayoó de Vidriales ???
The man at 27:06 is infuriating. How can he blame the youth when he is single handedly screwing even the start of potential growth! It would be more beneficial to dig large holes to retain water than plowing thru land like that!
The nerve this man has.
Why did this doccie end??? Nooooooooooooo, why can't it be 4-5hrs??? :'(
Great documentary, great work! Maybe some parts will benefit from subtitles?
Hello Margarita and thank you for your comment.
The subtitles are in the Closed Captions of the documentary, you just have to click on the CC button and use the caption settings to pick your subtitles from English, French or Spanish.
Thank you for the video. Also, if possible, could you please add subtitles to Willem Ferwerda's talking segments?
Thank you for your comment we are going to look into it ASAP. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Australia should take note ! They have forgotten how to re-green their land and are wasting their water and therefore the greenery.
That said, all deserts are not candidates. The Precautionary Principle needs to be considered. For example, the Taklamakhan desert is the dust seed source for rainfall events in the western USA
great documentary but needs subtitles.

vpro documentary it would be great if all parts are subbed so people with trouble hearing can enjoy them, too
Yes, we agree, and we are working on it.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.
How important was it to deliver water to this project / Could it survive without an input of water? I understand that the higher the Co2 concentration in the air the less water plants need. Any comments?
17:50 the groasis
Wonderful uplifting documentary. Some subtitles would help a lot however
Sub titles needed thanks
Half of this documentary is lost without translation.
I wish you had put sub titles in ...
Thanks for your comment di brentley, you can find the subtitles in the closed caption section (cc)
wish they would do more translation, but very interesting.
the buzzing sound is really frustrating
I don't get this, part of the programme is in Spanish or something, without any subtitles?
So basically, when you dont want to farm a piece if land anymore you need to replant the forest that was supposed to be there in the first place, or the land will erode and eventually turn into a desert.. it should be laws about that, that the forest must be replanted when you no longer use the land.
it needs English subtitles, so we can understand what they were saying
Hello Rahul Gond,
