Todays young men have so many more tools and options on trucks available to them that makes work much easier than when I was young. Our old trucks didn’t have all the bells and whistles they have now. Things like power steering, diesel engines, air conditioning, four wheel disc brakes, four wheel drive without locking hubs, etc., etc. . When I hear them talking about old vehicles like big steering wheels. the strange manual shift lever on the steering column, or put down the gas engines, straight six engines and three and four speed transmissions etc. I just think of how spoiled they are, and makes me realize how old I am. My God these vehicles were our everyday workhorses, plain Jane nothing fancy and got the job done period. We didn’t see them as something to worship or show off with we just patch ‘em up with bailing wire and go on down the road. I remember the time when my dads truck carburetor actually cracked in the middle of loading hay out in the field. No such thing as a parts store close by so he took a piece of bailing wire and tied the carburetor together and he drove that truck a month before he got a new carburetor for it.

Cool old truck and good to see Roger from Roger's Fixit Barn. My Dad had a '68 model long bed. He drove it forever.

Interesting how y’all do it up there. Guess the weather isnt the same here or something cuz we have to strap our stuff down a bit different.”that’ll be alright” just isn’t enough. We have to slap the load and say “that ain’t goin nowhere” to really make sure it’s secure.

Sweet action brother that's killer badass you don't find those 69 Ford Trucks everyday so with that i say bravo on an excellent barn find

  • @waynep343
    @waynep343 3 роки тому +4

directly below the steering box is a crossmember.. look at the bottom frame rail to cross member connection. there will be an 5/8 headed bolt with an 11/16 nut that is probably loose and allowing the frame rail to rock as you turn the steering wheel back and forth.
also check the full insertion of the steering shaft coupling (rag joint) on the steering box input shaft. these years of fords did not have a notch in the shaft for the bolt to prevent the coupling from slipping off.
the 66 to 69 ford pickups used a pin type ignition switch. that there were issues with the connectors burning on the back.. new pin type ignition switches and pin type pigtails are available.
don't forget to install an ignition kill switch .. get your tools on this truck and its way too easy for bandits to make off with it.. along with a GPS tracker.
install a 1984 corvette fuel filter directly before the fuel pump to protect the fuel pump check valves from sediment in the fuel system that results in cold start stall and extended cranking times along with vapor lock issues like when the engine is hot and you start up hill . the corvette fuel filter is a 10 micron element. before the pump.. not between the pump and carb..
when you do the front and rear brakes.. please replace the wheel cylinders. you do have to take the nut off the back of the backing plate and knock the pin out of the parking brake lever to replace it.. not hard to do. and use red high temp silicone to glue the ends of the return springs to the brake webs and the curly hold down springs together.. and the light blue spring for the lower shoe return spring also to the web.. that is if you want to never need to pull a drum then replace it because a spring broke or came apart and wedged under a shoe.
that year 360 also used a nylon toothed cam timing sprocket.. guaranteed to fail eventually.. check slack in the crank before the distributor rotor reacts.. more than 1/2 inch at the damper is way too loose..
lastly.. your truck probably has 4.56 gears.. start collecting 16" ford wheels that the same 8 bolt pattern and get some taller tires. the 8.75-16.5s are usually 27" tall. the taller 16 inch tires available in load range E should be 33 or 34" tall. its a huge difference on the freeway.. really wakes the trucks of this vintage up. 27.5 tires run the engine at 3621 RPMS at 65.. a 33.5" tire is 2950 RPMS at 65 in 4th gear.

Great find, I look forward to seeing the restoration.
P.S. Check the front cab supports, I've owned several and that's a weak spot. If they go bad and collapse the cab will rest on the steering column and destroy that too.
Please, no "patina". To me, that just says, "I'm too poor or too lazy to paint it."

Never put your thumbs inside the steering wheel on a manual steering setup. If the front tire hits a rut, it will snap the wheel and can break your thumb.

What do you want power steering for ?
I have to laugh when cars as small as a smart car have power steering. it makes paople lazy, and you can't feel the road.
When i was about 13/14, i used to go with my dad, and used to drive a 30Ft flatbed with vehicle pallets on the back around the yard, no power steering, manual gearbox, just have to keep the wheels rolling.
