  • A quick look at an issue that commonly affects 2012 non-retina 13" MacBook Pros. These models were sold for years so this issue will be around for a while. Read more about it here: knownappleissues.com/2019/05/0...

    Very interesting, just sold on my MacBook with the same issue, given up trying to repair it. Thanks for the video!

    Thanks for making this video! I’m having this exact issue with the bottom ram row. :(

    Yo, thanks for the detailed view on the issue a lot of people I know are actually having. I assume that most of the people facing the issue are unfortunately having issues with properly wording the problem, that's why the video has not some, but not so many views. If you don't mind I'll send a link to the video to a couple of chats and mention it on my website (you deserve all the credit, hats off). Also, I would be glad to translate it to Russian (the ability to translate is disabled, BTW) - this problem is simply unanswered in Russian, and I was frustrated while searching for a proper repairperson to diagnose it. Spoiler: had to do it myself in the end.

      Philipp Ustivitskiy appreciate the translation offer, I will look into enabling that tomorrow 👍🏻
      As the symptoms are mostly graphics related at first it often gets misdiagnosed unfortunately so please spread it as you wish :)

      Brock Suire nope, just kept charging people for board replacements (that had the same problem). Imagine how many millions of dollars were spent by folks affected by this issue... and how many of these MBP’s were tossed out because they were too expensive to fix...

    I have a mid 2012 13" MBP (A1278) starting to have "checked screen" and 3 beeps issues. Tried reseating the RAM, another set of RAMs, same shit happens. Either only top slot, bottom slop, both slots, nothing seems to work after a while when the mac does start up, it fails eventually. So I may look into these loose feet issue next.
    One thing tho, I think these thick paddings are here to serve as heat transfer material. When the RAM get hot, the heat travel thru the padding and spread on the alloy bottom cover. Radiator effet or am i F.O.S. ? Just guessing.
    (history of that MAC, I changed the HD flat wire twice over the past 9 years, swapped the original HD for an SSD, changed the battery few days ago as the original got badly swollen and even fixed the touchpad. I love that piece of junk so I'd try anything to save its life even if it's for few months before I buy its replacement.)

    Thanks for the video. Both my slots work when one ram stick is inserted alone. I use the bottom slot with one stick. If I add one to the top slot (along with the bottom), the computer boots up, the OS starts then I get a frozen screen with rainbow like colors within 30 seconds or so.
    Would this be the pin issue, or maybe something else?
    Thanks.

      I’d attribute this to a faulty socket as well

    nice video !
    im wondering why the 15" A1286 Mid-2012 mbp's, also have padding layers on the ram slots and bottom case.. ?
    Could the 15" also get this ram slot problem like the 13" models. ?
    opened up two of them yesterday, both have the same kind of padding like this 13" model in the video..
    makes me a little bit worried for these A1286 2012 models...

      F. van Nierop just a precaution on Apple’s part. I’ve never seen a 15” 2012 with this issue.

      the issue exists in 2011 15" ones, and the boards are practically the same, except for some differences in CPUs and USB speed, so it might very well be present in those too.

    Is That Possible To Resolder Them Seeing With Camera On Big Screen Or They Are Just Placed On The Points.I Just wanna To make sure is that metal pin can be joined with soldering iron or not

    • @TheHouseOfMoth
      @TheHouseOfMoth  4 роки тому +1

      Anil J depends on the quality and magnification of your camera. In both board revisions the pins hover over the pads so a good amount of solder is needed to make a solid connection. Iron has to be placed just right so that the whole pin and pad get covered in solder else you create a weak joint and get in trouble again later.

    • @thiagodlt
      @thiagodlt Рік тому

      @@TheHouseOfMoth could an option to repair this be adding a small bit of micro wire to lengthen the pin an make a stronger joint?

    I have a late 2011 MBP which sometimes fails to boot with 3 beeps and other times works fine for a while before getting screen bars and three beep. Pressing does not seem to affect it, ad swapping ram one slot at a time has no effect. I'm convinced it's a problem with bad solder to the ram slot but note you're dealing with a 2012 machine. Are you aware if the same problem affected late 2011 MBPs? I would love to keep the machine as it otherwise runs faster than many much newer machines and I have software that no longer runs on later machines. Useful video, thanks.

      I have not come across any 2011's with this particular issue but anything is possible. Definitely worth a microscope inspection at least

    • @thiagodlt
      @thiagodlt Рік тому +1

      it is a known problem in 2011 MBPs too, just hadn't ever been diagnosed as it, it was mostly blamed to loose RAM sitcks in an "old" bracket, theres tons of forum posts about it. I have one with the problem myself and managed to mitigate the problem for some time, and i have been looking for the root problem for many years to get around to fixing it, this video finally points to it.

    • @thiagodlt
      @thiagodlt Рік тому +1

      also my board was changed 3 times under the video chip recall in just 3 weeks, first time, RAM problems (3 beeps) and changed again under recall warranty, second time usb problems, again, warranty, third time was the charm to this date no video or other problems (all were refurbished re-balled boards) so this problems exist since the beggining (as for the first board) it just surfaced later on after more heavy use, I can almost state as a fact that this is the problem since I used to grab my machine opened up from just one corner to move it around and that tended to make it "flex" from its own weight and those times were when it first started doing the 3 beeps and stuff. sadly a flexing board = separated pins.

      @@thiagodlt Thanks for that info. I wasn't able to fix mine and have more or less stopped using it. I'll have to have another look when I get time as it sounds from your experience that my model would be prone to the same problem. Thanks.
