Hey Alex, good stuff. My recommendation would be a smaller extension cord at a higher gauge. You're not pulling much from an amp perspective but being able to go to a 12 gauge cable and one that has less slack can help not only with cable management but also with not having to worry about line fluctuations. Not knowing the level of alterations you can make in your rented garage you could always just use plastic conduit to run the cable through which super sticky Velcro that could hold the conduit in place and also keep it looking a little more organized. Also with the way your sub-panel is connected, they wont ever be able to tell which circuit is pulling increased draw. They might see on the meter that there is higher usage but no way without tapping each circuit to know which unit it is. You weren't asking for free charging but you got it for now! :)
Here is a couple of suggestions. Plug in directly to the splitter (better if you replace the outlet to a dual. it would cost you less than $10 for the outlet and face plate of you know how to use a screw screwdriver you can do it yourself just make sure you turn the breaker off). You can get the mounting bracket for the mobile connector from Tesla or any other supplier. Then run the cable the way you have it now. You should have enough cable to do that. The end of the cable that goes into the car is going to hang close to the wall. That eliminates the extension cord.
Also you should set the charging limit to the maximum supported by the outlet and just have the car stop charging using the Tesla app before you open the garage door and continue charging after you close it. That way you don't sacrifice many hours of charging at a higher rate because the concern of tripping the breaker. Opening and closing the garage takes less than 10 seconds even if you go in and out of your garage 6 times a day, that's still less than a minute per day. No need to charge for hours at a lower speed. Every extra Watt counts specially at that lower speed.
Just a couple of suggestions that could hopefully make your like easier. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for sharing. I did that for 5 years and worked beautifully. I connected the charging cable directly to the outlet, and use some sort of staples (I don't know the name), and a charge plug holder I bought for $15 . I charged it there overnight, no issues! I just regret leaving my apartment. Now I have to struggle😢
Very nice! Hopefully the landlord doesn't say anything and you can continue to get convenient charging. I've been saying that apt/condo complexes need to start installing chargers now for a while. It's really the only way were going to get mass adoption of EV's since we know a very small amount of people would be willing to supercharger all the time as their main source of charging. Hopefully that landlord mindset changes sooner than later!
Absolutely! Like I said I have no problem helping pay for stuff, but just having the ability to charge is all I want
This video needs at least 10x the amount of views! Great video man. I also live in an apartment and would have to charge via extension cable if I were to get an EV
Thank you sir!! Yeah gotta do what you gotta do in a pinch haha
Omg your garage door is super efficient, mine pulls up to 5amps HAHA
Holy 🤯
Good approach.
I had a similar situation where I live. BUT, my garage has a 20A outlet so I just used the Tesla provided cord and secured it to the wall with C-brackets. I drive forward into my garage so I put my cord on the left side...hate backing into garage! At most, I drove 5 screw holes into the wallboard which I can spackle over when I leave. My landlord approved of my install and thought it was cool. I pay the electricity anyway so it was no $$$ out for him. At the other end, I use a Tesla wall hanger...available for less than $20 on Amazon. I'd attach photos but I don't think that's possible for comments. If you want, send me your e-mail and I'll send them. It has turned out fine for me...rarely do I need to charge more often than overnight. Once my Model S is at 90%, it charges up overnight. PS. I live in Ohio too.
Awesome, thanks for sharing!!
Supper creative, great job!
Thanks!
Zip tie sections of pvc pipe to use like conduit from metal hangars and down wall. Run the cord through it. Also, use shorter, heavier gauge cord for the power cable.
“Annnnnnd it’s dark” 😂😂😂😂 that got me
Lmao
Awesome work around. Kind of lame they dont wanna do anything even with an $8k rebate.. My apartment complex went right through it as long as i paid for it and it was a brick building. It only cost me $600 and was tied to my electric. It was perfect. Charged up everynight at 3 hours 50amp.
Yeah, I wish they were more responsive to things, it's been disappointing.
It cost only $600 to install a tesla charger? How can you get a $8000 rebate?
@@phitruong4463 50 amp breaker
Enjoy your channel. Picked up my Model Y on 8/29 at Easton as they only deliver within the beltway, not to Springfield. Too bad we can't use referrals in Ohio.
I noticed you have a 5-20 outlet, you can buy from Tesla the 20 amp circuit adapter for your mobile connector. This will give you about a 20% boost to charging speed. I would just zip tie your mobile connector to the rails for the opener and not use an extension cord, let the built in cable come down from the ceiling. The opener doesn’t need to be factored in for the load. You can get a 5-20 splitter for the outlet or replace the outlet with one the has two receptacles. In this case the full speed that the car will allow with the adapter is safe as long as it is plugged directly into the outlet, just make sure if you use a splitter it is up to the task.
That's a good idea! I've been rolling with the 12A charging and it's been fine. Don't really want to do any additional wiring to that receptacle and risk being fined or something
Hey alex you can use cable clips off Amazon to clean that up but idk if it will work for thicc cables.
Alex: Good work around! Regarding the cost of electricity, even if you averaged 100 miles/week (and it sounds like you might not be driving that much right now), assuming you average 270 Wh/mile (my average) and energy cost of $0.125/kWh (what I pay), include 10% charging loss (my scientific wild-ass guess), it comes out to about $16/month. I wouldn’t think the apartment management would come all unglued over that minimal amount.
That's what I'm thinking, especially when the garage is $125/month.
Congratulations on getting your own garage, Alex! Would it be possible, if you secured it with cable ties, to plug the Tesla charger directly into the 3-way outlet? I know that Tesla says to never use extension cords and this video is for the public to watch, so someone might say that it is dangerous, even though we both know that you have taken all precautions.
Don't even get me started on apartments and their (mostly) utter incompetence about EV charging. For example, my apartment complex has a Blink EVSE that will only do 3.8kW and is $0.39/kWh - crazy expensive and about 4x the normal electric rate here in Charlotte, NC. You're lucky that your lease didn't specifically call out no charging... more and more are having that. You did this well, but many people would not - that's a far bigger liability for the complex than just installing a proper charging station. If you want to do a video together talking about this I'm open to it.
If you get a NEMA 5-20 (your outlet is a NEMA 5-20) adapter for the mobile connector, you'll be able to pull 16A continuous and even only about 17A with garage door operating - this will significantly faster charging (33% faster). You may need to use a heavier duty extension and a 5-15 to 5-20 adapter. For routing the extension cord, I would recommend command light hanging hooks.
Good feedback, thanks for sharing!! I've heard other say to do something similar for faster charging but so far my car has been at 80%+ more often than not. I'm not driving very much because of WFH, so I don't think it's worth the cost to upgrade extension cords for this temporary setup.
Your apartment complex probably wouldn’t even be able to tell that it was your circuit that is drawing more power
That's a good point honestly, it all runs through one panel - but my bank of garages is separately metered.
I would recommend A 10 gauge extension cord as well as your outlet.
😅 They at Tesla specify clearly: "Do not use extension cords"
hey man I live in the east Columbus area and I'm getting a model y delivered at Easton here in little over a week. If you would want to make any model y content for your channel I'm happy to help out.
Yeah, that could be fun! Shoot me a DM on social media. Links are in the description
The landlord probably a patrol head... but nice way to go around .. but the garage door automation system is taking too much space in my opinion
Always ask permission from your landlord before modifying a rental unit
This is why I just plugged stuff in instead of installing a wall charger
@@Sibs exactly, there are no issues with that
Only hope they don’t see this vid 😂
🤫
Why TF that door is that noisy ? Omg
Might need some WD-40 lol
My 24-year-old garage door opener with a screw drive is really noisy too.
I've been considering an upgrade to a belt drive opener with a DC motor for more than a decade...
