The current generation can get a feel of real stereo music here. Madjo's voice is to your right while Ondindia and Samba emerge from the left but on different microphones. Notice you can distinguish all the instruments used. Great sound engineering and recording, then with what you now call analogue technology?????? Take me back to those days of Kawesa. Where are the Star Trek Transporter and Dr. Spock???
Thks Serropatrick....these guys were my friends from the time l was in school till today though most have passed on... It is a group l therefore know like the back of my hand....hehehe. I will soon post their music on UA-cam as l have over 40 songs by them... Cheers..
Nsilu Wa Bansilu Manitcho was a bass player who also played with Bana Ngenge and Vundumuna. Bana Ngenge was formed by a group that split from Orch. Veve while the latter was on tour in Uganda.
No, Manitcho used to be in Black Devils. His first association with Samba was in the 1981 Virunga project alongside Lawi Somana, Fataki, Loboko Bua Mangala, Dialopa Atei and Onyango Shaban. These were sessions musicians Samba gathered when he sold the Virunga song to Polygram. It was a time Samba was impatient and fed up with the slow-moving Les Kinois. When he dumped Les Kinois, Manitcho became a full time in Virung till 1985 when he decamped to Vundumuna.
@7116219 Samba lives in washington DC now, he's been on tour this summer with the occidental brothers i think. I saw him years ago on tour and had a great time at the show and meeting him, got to sing a little bit with them. unforgettable.
Hi, I'm search for Gor Mahia,Rosy and Fathee na Mathee .For many years visited studios in Kisumu,Mombasa and here in Nairobi but I haven't found them. Any advice Sir?
Very few of this record was produced. I remember we had almost all of Les Kinois records.I hear Pele Odindia,Bibeley .Okello Josse,Fostao Warumba.Mwalimu Bedjo and I go gaga. There was an album done by Samba Moreno and Koko Zigo called Mabiala any one has it out there?
@@davidodhiamboapuoyo7702 could you kindly get him to give the story of Les Kinois? An authoritative narrative. To which Kina Samba & Madjo can add or subtract?
Just why Samba left Les Kinois to form Virunga which didn't have the flair and sweetness of Les Kinois still beats me. Virunga never - in my opinion - ever matched the wonderful Les Kinois.
I have told him before that the unique combination of vocals and instrumentalists in Les Kinois cannot be replicated. I even told him to look for Madjo & BibiLey, forgive one another and recompose Les Kinos. Virunga was only outstanding around 1983-1984 when it had a full star line up- Koko Zigo, Moreno, Fataki, Kalombo, Dago Mayombe etc. But as Madjo once sung 'Pesa Ndiyo Mungu Ya Dunia'. Samba has made much more money with the Paris cabal that he may have forgotten where they originated.
The separation may be rooted in the near death experience they had in Kampala during Amin's final days. But they have never publicly recounted that incident objectively. But it was a bad consequence that marked the death of one of the greatest African bands ever. Cannot be replicated.
The answer to that question is this: Samba has always been an impatient artist. Bikassy Bidjos, in whose Saka Saka band Samba played briefly, told me that. Why Samba ditched Les Kinois at the time the band was in its best form in 1980 baffles many, and his doing that messed up the careers of men like Madjo, Pele Ondindia, Gina de Wolo, Mwalimu Bedjos, Okelo, Kasule, Bibiley and others. When a leader deserts camp, the camp collapses. Samba was the heart and soul of Les Kinois and why he left made Bibiley very angry. When he left, the stars of Les Kinois like Pele, Okelo, Bedjos and Madjos also left. Bibiley tried to hold it for a while before ditching it to create Orchestra Malembe. Nine years later, Samba did the same thing when he ditched Virunga in favour of 4 Stars when they toured Kenya. He had earlier tried to do the same with Sam Manguana in 1984 when Virunga backed Sam in Furaha Ya Bibi and Baba Gaston akaingia kati. When Samba recorded Vunja Mifupa and graced Paris, he ditched men who had sacrificed their careers for him like Fataki Lokassa Sulutani Hamisi. Indeed it is sad that when Samba started working with the Paris men, his colleagues in Virunga who depended on him were frustrated, and they started dying one after the other: Fataki, Zigo, Bedjos, Ondindia... It is only Okelo, Bibiley and Madjo who have survived.
Yes sir. He is in the USA, but it appears in a different state from where Samba is. And Samba doesn't seem to like calling him for gigs. Madjo once said in an Interview that the 'Saka Saka' band which metamorphosed into 'Les Kinois' used instruments from his uncle. The beef may have started there and was made worse by the shooting of Samba by Idi Amin's thugs in Kampala around 1979-1980 when Les Kinois Was on tour there. Not long after returning to Nairobi, Samba left Les Kinois to release 'Virunga', 'Yembele', 'Ahmed Sabit' with Fataki Lokassa and Dago Mayombe as a studio band. The popularity of this release energised him to recruit for a performing band whose greatest height was 1983-1984. From then on it has been downhill even as the money has increased. The Paris-Brussels-London-USA genie cannot compete with the roots - Africa. There is no authenticity, no identity, no feeling, No Kabalagala. Lokassa Ya Mbongo and his comrades residing in these cities have diluted their product by being present in all products by different composers - they have become a mass product with less value than the exclusive one. Example: Nyoka Longo has stuck with his Zaiko Langa Langa for over 40yrs. Meditate.
This is the real deal, this kind of music will never expire, I have listened to it for over fourty years.

You got the line up well..These guys were great
Superb! Thanks Darubini.
Hie Macko....hope you are doing well......might you have managed to post the 40 plus collection from this group....as you had indicated earlier on?
No, I do not have it; it's one of a few Les Kinois tunes I don't have. I will keep trying.
Do you have 'Teddy' or 'Tedi' by Les kinois, I think sung by Mapangala and Kasule 'Mopepe'? It was a mix of Luganda, Lingala and Swahili.
I remember my friend Okello Jose Jagem Kathomo who was playing with the band
You are right....though a very short stint.
Where is Okello now? He was just as good, if not better, as his Congolese band mates. His rhythm is simply beautiful.
Joseph Okello Songa is in one of those South Pacific Islands playing there. Tonga or something like that.

Brisbane Australia He is on fb.
