I liked the black and white button much more than shoulder buttons, they worked fine in both versions and the layout reminded me of old Sega Genesis controllers, wich, had, probably, inspired they're implementation.
The OG Xbox itself was already very inspired by the Dreamcast (with Backwards compatibility planned but scrapped) and the controller was also based on the Dreamcast's controller. So yea wouldn't be suprised if it was due to the Sega inspiration.
I remember having PS2 then I walked into some guys dorm in College who was playing NCAA football 03 and I remember thinking how great the graphics looked playing the exact same game I had but twice as good. I picked up one that summer and we had some of the most epic Halo battles on split screen ever. Great times.
I've always used my middle finger for the triggers and my index finger for the shoulder buttons so this controller feels so natural to me. I bought it yesterday and I'm loving it so far!
To bad mine broke shortly after one month. Right triger broke. Opened it up on the inside and its just poor design. The left triger pull is held together by a narrow tiny piece of plastic so watch out for that.
@the Game, Review and Reallife Channel lolol the dualshock 4 hands down is the best ever, if you want to add an insane price you could say the xbox elite version 2 but no, the duke was no ones favorite
I’m in love with that controller, I was flipping out when I saw the thumbnail and then I saw the original Xbox animation and I got ultra flipping crazy hyped
Thanks for the vid it was cool to watch. I'm glad to see nostalgia vids like these, it helps me to appreciate how far we've come. I agree with Kevin, the XB1 controller is the most comfortable controller. I've got pretty big hands and the XB1 controller works really well with my big hands.
Caught the banshee that flew by in the corner of my eye when you were talking about the controller at the beginning nice touch. At 1:18 In the upper right corner. You also should have the spartan teabagging😆
I love the animation on that circular screen in the middle of the New Duke of the original Xbox Boot-up screen, if i had an Xbox One i would pick this up.
just tried to order one but didnt realize that it isnt gonna be released till next tuesday. I wasnt a xbox kid growing up I was playstation fan (still am) but somedays after school I would head over to my friends house and the four of us would all play fuzion frenzy with the duke together, good times.
Cool video, thought it was just about the release of the "Duke", but was very informative, comprehensive piece about the history of the controller which was a added bonus.
Guy with big hands here, i really like that they brought back the big controller, up to this day i use my original Duke for every gamepad related game i play on pc, gta 5 driving for example. The major problem is, controller nowadays are just tiny, i get it htat they design them for kids under 15 years but still, your hands will cramp alot and it will be a very unpleasent feeling playing games for more than 10 minutes. This new duke actually finally help me being able to play my switch, for 2 years now only my wife played with it, because it just plainly hurt even with the pro controller, witch is really tiny and not made for adult hand sizes. So Kudos to the devs of the new duke. Also, i don´t really get that you complain about traveling time with your indexfingers, controller are made to have your middlefingers on the back buttons and the inderxfingers on the top, every pro will play like this and it´s the only way to actually hold a controller normally. Not doing that is like only putting your hands on your cars driving wheel when you need to do a turn, just saying. Nice review though.
Man playing Kotor, Halo CE, and Halo 2 with this thing is gonna be awesome, wish I had more original Xbox games, guess I have Psychonauts on PC but I never had that as a kid
Man I can't wait to get my hands on this controller I love this baby it felt so good in the hands. This is definitely my favorite controller ever and man I am soooo glad it back.
I'm a Sony/pc/nintendo guy these days, but man those xbox controller are great. I'm so glad the Switch pro controller has the same layout...now if sony made an official controller with that stick layout I could die happy.
but why? do you have a collection of xbox's? I would like to try one of those. and the controller that I reaaaally would like to try out, is the steam controller!
K.D.R i have 9 of them because I love them and one day they will be hard to find. I have every original xbox exclusive. And around 450 og xbox titles total.
DatGameCollector Dude that's awesome I only have one original one I probably should buy more though never thought about there not being anymore one day.
Kinda interesting to see the progression of Microsoft even down to the way the shoulder buttons work on the Xbox one controller. Am I the only one who lays my index finger over both LB/LT? The way its designed you can just roll your finger to press the shoulder button without ever taking your finger off the trigger. IMO its a brilliant design. (mainly plays Racing games so its nice to roll my finger over clutch (LB) while maintaining contract with LT (brake)
I love how something that sucked at the time, was immediately replaced and swept under the rug, and is overall considered to be a failure can now be brought back to consumers in the name of nostalgia
My hands are about average, but I always found the old Duke comfortable. It was bigger than most controllers but I never felt it was a problem. The only weird part was the big wasted space in the middle.
@@YourChannel-r4v Some of the early designs for what became the Duke had a screen there like the Dreamcast controller. I wouldn't have minded option buttons like select/start in that spot either, or maybe some toggles for turbo or something. Anything, really. I always felt like I should have been able to push the big Xbox button as a start button at least. It was so prominent it felt like it should honk a horn.
There’s a more recent video somewhere,I can’t remember who made it,but explained why it was so big in the first place. It was not on purpose. It had something to do with a patent that Nintendo had,so they had to improvise. Either way,I still like the Duke and a much improvement, that rose from the ashes of the Dreamcast.
halo banshee at 1:17 top right.(spartan 117 nod there) halo pelican bottom right 4:20. halo spartan bottom right 5:34 digital spartan 117 from 6:15 till end
They make adapters that allow you to plug an Xbox controller into a PlayStation 4. You lose the arguably stupid touch pad functionality, but can use an Xbox Controller on a PS4. Same with Xbox 360 Controller to PS3 converters, but without having to worry about touch pad functions.
I never had a duke in my hands and im gonna get it once i got the spare change just to use it on pc for emulators and casual gaming as i have really large hands (23cm from base to middlefingertip)
So many reviewers highlighting the flaws, but Halo CE with this pad was a thing of beauty and since then, no analogue has felt as smooth and precise. Imo.
I want to see the slim retro controller , hopefully they will make one . And put the Xbox boot up screen in the slim controller also . Definitely getting the Duke .
The Nintendo GameCube didn't have symmetrical thumbsticks either, but the Original Duke did have similar sized thumbsticks unlike the GameCube's smaller c-stick.
The Duke had bumper buttons in addition to it's triggers? Did the S have that? I don't recall the S having that. I remember it had black and white buttons, though.
Xbox History with Kev™️
Austin Evans lol
lol
Well i expected this...Hey guys this is Austin !
Austin go home
👌🏻

Same, glad someone else likes the wht and blk buttons more
Oh man, the nostalgia. Halo 2 days.
Simte PS2 Just Destroyed Xbox Back in the day
that was the fucking best dude!
Adore Healer and Xbox destroyed PlayStation with its online service back in the day. Lol.
retrostansolo but PS2 is best selling console of all time and Xbox is worst thing created by Microsoft
Adore Healer lol stop hating
I remember having PS2 then I walked into some guys dorm in College who was playing NCAA football 03 and I remember thinking how great the graphics looked playing the exact same game I had but twice as good. I picked up one that summer and we had some of the most epic Halo battles on split screen ever. Great times.
Man I miss the days of original Xbox! It seemed so futuristic and alien from a whole different planet!
Yeah same here and as I hated the duke but loved when we got the slim controller here in Australia but yes the OG xbox was awesome.
Kinda like PS5 now lol
I've always used my middle finger for the triggers and my index finger for the shoulder buttons so this controller feels so natural to me. I bought it yesterday and I'm loving it so far!
I still have my old Duke
Kevin Kevinson, Honestly...The Duke is one of my most favorite controllers EVER. Using it on Xbox One X is a gift from Microsoft Heaven.
To bad mine broke shortly after one month. Right triger broke. Opened it up on the inside and its just poor design. The left triger pull is held together by a narrow tiny piece of plastic so watch out for that.
I grew up on the Duke controller I wanna pick one up for my xbox 1
@the Game, Review and Reallife Channel lolol the dualshock 4 hands down is the best ever, if you want to add an insane price you could say the xbox elite version 2 but no, the duke was no ones favorite
@the Game, Review and Reallife Channel lol ok smh.if you say so champ
@@Bidwellz9 literally everyone says xbox makes better controllers its just a fact
5:37 some character taken from halo is shooting at the top of the books on right corner
Zetaxil yea i saw that 5:34
Awesome catch thanks
JayGamerM they had some fun in editing as it looks like a mini samus
Check the same location at 4:19
Zetaxil i littearally Saw it pop Up and read the comment a second later😂
I’m in love with that controller, I was flipping out when I saw the thumbnail and then I saw the original Xbox animation and I got ultra flipping crazy hyped
5:35 there is a little chief (I think) doing some moves lol
Thanks for the vid it was cool to watch. I'm glad to see nostalgia vids like these, it helps me to appreciate how far we've come. I agree with Kevin, the XB1 controller is the most comfortable controller. I've got pretty big hands and the XB1 controller works really well with my big hands.
Editing on this was on point. Oh and by the way, The Nintendo Gamecube was the first gaming console to include an asymetrical stick layout.
5:34 -Shout out to chief for making an appearance on the bottom right.
is it me or is there a caterpillar crawling on the right corner of the screen starting at 1:16 ... nevermine
It's a Halo Banshee
Nah I saw it too
Looks like a Banshee, and is that a Spartan at 5:33?
RetroAges yes
Yeah I thought it was a fly but it's a banshee
Caught the banshee that flew by in the corner of my eye when you were talking about the controller at the beginning nice touch. At 1:18 In the upper right corner. You also should have the spartan teabagging😆
I saw a Banshee at 1:17, is that normal? Does Kevin usually hide these things in videos? I love this freaking channel.
i saw it too lol
there was also a crashing pelican too
I love the animation on that circular screen in the middle of the New Duke of the original Xbox Boot-up screen, if i had an Xbox One i would pick this up.

Kevin: “Microsoft created a very comfortable controller”
3 seconds later: “This is not very comfortable”
I loved and still love the duke controller. I'm thinking of taking the guts out of an Xbox one controller and some how fitting them inside the duke.
1:17 What is THAT on the wall in the top right corner?! 4:20 And in the bottom right here as well.
Im digging that 3d halo soldier shooting at you during the video😂

are we not talking about a armored robot thing shotting at 5:35 above those books?
oh how I miss you duke. OH SHIT IT"S BACK!!!! even as a 12 year old kid you were still the best controller for halo in my tiny hands
Between the Master Chef Collection, and having old Xbox games on the one, this is perfect.
I love the little Metroid guy floating around.
I own 9 of the real ones. Can't wait for mine to arrive.

Dude that's awesome I only have one original one I probably should buy more though never thought about there not being anymore one day.
Yea thats exactly why i have so many of them. Plus i knew this was coming which will sadly cause them to get more expensive.
DatGameCollector same but with the ps2 games and controllers
1:17 Why is there a random ghost floating in the background?
I loved the original one, I don't even have big hands but it was perfect, my little brother always played on the smaller one
I remember having the old duke controller for xbox in 2009 I still have it along with the first ever xbox

There is something so alien about the design, like nothing else
This controller was a love of my fuckin life..damn skippy they brought it back
At 1:18 in the top right what’s that thing going diagonally up
5:45 I’m pretty sure that the gamecube did the same thing at the same time
5:35 why were there a soldier on the bottom right table shooting?
the jack kelley lawyer clip from sunny got you this subscriber!
I love how something that sucked at the time, was immediately replaced and swept under the rug, and is overall considered to be a failure can now be brought back to consumers in the name of nostalgia
can't wait to buy it, it's so amazing !!
that little ship flying around took my Attention for most of the video
I wish my original Duke controller would’ve worked on my 360. Loved the Duke.
I personally find it easier to press the select and start buttons on duke controller than the s controller.
This brings me back
5:51 "nintendo at the time used only a single stick" both the xbox and gamecube came out in the same year and the gamecube had 2 sticks
My hands are about average, but I always found the old Duke comfortable. It was bigger than most controllers but I never felt it was a problem. The only weird part was the big wasted space in the middle.

I own a ps4 but I’ve always liked the Xbox controller
I like both honnestly, but I have to admit Xbox controllers are more comfortable for long sessions lol
that's why I use a Scuf Impact controller. Still symmetrical analogs but its got the comfortable xbox controller shape.
because you are a GAMER not a fan boy. Long live to GAMERS 👍😀
NOBODY BUT MYKYAAL yo

Love the controller, Fits my hands just right.
My OG Xbox only has the big ones. I loved them.
I want it just for coolness nerd factor , it would look badass on my shelf
Still have two originals from the original Xbox. Trying to play with those bad boys at 13 was like holding a plate lol
Will be picking this up with be perfect to play the original Xbox games on the Xbox One.
Hey Kevin, I like your videos! very professional edition, I guess you like Synthwave and New Retro Wave music, like me.
I own a ps4, but even I remember this controller and want one. Plus love the new retro wave theme 😁
I’m glad I was late to the game with the original Xbox. I never had the dumpy controller lol. I had the halo 2 green Xbox and controller.
5:40
look at the cute little samus (or master chief idk) awwww
1:17 What's flying on the top right?
What was that bot type thing doing there at the right corner at 5:35
I'm really excited to play some Halo, Gears, and Forza with this beast.
cool, welcome back duke
What is that little thing flying in the top right corner 1:16
So upset i didn't know this was even out till a few days ago. Bought one instantly considering buying another.

How do you know someone has put the effort in making their videos !? Those tiny animations at the back 👌🏽
*looks at the television* Wow, that's a HUGE Nintendo Switch!
5:53 actually it was t the first asymmetrical controller the GameCube came before it
gamecube controller did that kind of stick design before Xbox. GC released in Japan in Sept 2001, Xbox was Nov 2001 in the US
1:17 what's that floating thing on the top right corner?
I’m loving that UNSC beanie
1:16 cute little bug on the top right :)
i knew about these retro controllers but good video
I think all the Xbox controllers are awesome I have all of them from the Duke to the Xbox one s controller, their just so naturally comfortable
I WAS WAiTING FOR THIS REVIEW

1:16 why the hell is there something floating in the top right hand corner
1:17 what is the guy in the back ground pushing a motorcycle
Nice samus gif 5:35 ;)
Did anyone else see that figure pop up at the the bottom right corner around 5:50? Was it samus or master chief
what was the little flying thing in the top right corner of the screen at 1:16

When you got to the history section you made me forget I was watching a video about the new controller. Thanks for making engaging videos.
