I liked the black and white button much more than shoulder buttons, they worked fine in both versions and the layout reminded me of old Sega Genesis controllers, wich, had, probably, inspired they're implementation.
The OG Xbox itself was already very inspired by the Dreamcast (with Backwards compatibility planned but scrapped) and the controller was also based on the Dreamcast's controller. So yea wouldn't be suprised if it was due to the Sega inspiration.

I remember having PS2 then I walked into some guys dorm in College who was playing NCAA football 03 and I remember thinking how great the graphics looked playing the exact same game I had but twice as good. I picked up one that summer and we had some of the most epic Halo battles on split screen ever. Great times.

Yeah same here and as I hated the duke but loved when we got the slim controller here in Australia but yes the OG xbox was awesome.

Kevin Kevinson, Honestly...The Duke is one of my most favorite controllers EVER. Using it on Xbox One X is a gift from Microsoft Heaven.
To bad mine broke shortly after one month. Right triger broke. Opened it up on the inside and its just poor design. The left triger pull is held together by a narrow tiny piece of plastic so watch out for that.

I've always used my middle finger for the triggers and my index finger for the shoulder buttons so this controller feels so natural to me. I bought it yesterday and I'm loving it so far!

Guy with big hands here, i really like that they brought back the big controller, up to this day i use my original Duke for every gamepad related game i play on pc, gta 5 driving for example.
The major problem is, controller nowadays are just tiny, i get it htat they design them for kids under 15 years but still, your hands will cramp alot and it will be a very unpleasent feeling playing games for more than 10 minutes.
This new duke actually finally help me being able to play my switch, for 2 years now only my wife played with it, because it just plainly hurt even with the pro controller, witch is really tiny and not made for adult hand sizes. So Kudos to the devs of the new duke.
Also, i don´t really get that you complain about traveling time with your indexfingers, controller are made to have your middlefingers on the back buttons and the inderxfingers on the top, every pro will play like this and it´s the only way to actually hold a controller normally. Not doing that is like only putting your hands on your cars driving wheel when you need to do a turn, just saying.

I’m in love with that controller, I was flipping out when I saw the thumbnail and then I saw the original Xbox animation and I got ultra flipping crazy hyped

So many reviewers highlighting the flaws, but Halo CE with this pad was a thing of beauty and since then, no analogue has felt as smooth and precise. Imo.

just tried to order one but didnt realize that it isnt gonna be released till next tuesday. I wasnt a xbox kid growing up I was playstation fan (still am) but somedays after school I would head over to my friends house and the four of us would all play fuzion frenzy with the duke together, good times.
I'm a Sony/pc/nintendo guy these days, but man those xbox controller are great. I'm so glad the Switch pro controller has the same layout...now if sony made an official controller with that stick layout I could die happy.
Man playing Kotor, Halo CE, and Halo 2 with this thing is gonna be awesome, wish I had more original Xbox games, guess I have Psychonauts on PC but I never had that as a kid

I like both honnestly, but I have to admit Xbox controllers are more comfortable for long sessions lol
that's why I use a Scuf Impact controller. Still symmetrical analogs but its got the comfortable xbox controller shape.

They make adapters that allow you to plug an Xbox controller into a PlayStation 4. You lose the arguably stupid touch pad functionality, but can use an Xbox Controller on a PS4. Same with Xbox 360 Controller to PS3 converters, but without having to worry about touch pad functions.
Editing on this was on point. Oh and by the way, The Nintendo Gamecube was the first gaming console to include an asymetrical stick layout.
I own 9 of the real ones. Can't wait for mine to arrive.

K.D.R i have 9 of them because I love them and one day they will be hard to find. I have every original xbox exclusive. And around 450 og xbox titles total.

I am Xbox original, I had the Xbox when it first came out. This was a solid control, there never was a problem with it, and the only small complaint was it was too bulky for some, however playing your games never was a problem no matter what game you playing, I am waiting until they get back in stock, and I am definitely getting mine, because the DUKE is my nickname, after my uncle, and a early birthday present for me, and above all, it's very special to me, and nobody is going to touch it. This is something to have in your library, because it well definitely make your friends jealous. Even though you probably can't put no trigger guards on it, still it's a nice controller to have. 👍☺️.
My hands are about average, but I always found the old Duke comfortable. It was bigger than most controllers but I never felt it was a problem. The only weird part was the big wasted space in the middle.
@@YourChannel-r4v Some of the early designs for what became the Duke had a screen there like the Dreamcast controller. I wouldn't have minded option buttons like select/start in that spot either, or maybe some toggles for turbo or something. Anything, really. I always felt like I should have been able to push the big Xbox button as a start button at least. It was so prominent it felt like it should honk a horn.

Kinda interesting to see the progression of Microsoft even down to the way the shoulder buttons work on the Xbox one controller. Am I the only one who lays my index finger over both LB/LT? The way its designed you can just roll your finger to press the shoulder button without ever taking your finger off the trigger. IMO its a brilliant design. (mainly plays Racing games so its nice to roll my finger over clutch (LB) while maintaining contract with LT (brake)
Loved the Duke. Preferred it to the S controller version.
I personally find it easier to press the select and start buttons on duke controller than the s controller.
I remember having the old duke controller for xbox in 2009 I still have it along with the first ever xbox

Thanks for the vid it was cool to watch. I'm glad to see nostalgia vids like these, it helps me to appreciate how far we've come. I agree with Kevin, the XB1 controller is the most comfortable controller. I've got pretty big hands and the XB1 controller works really well with my big hands.
Between the Master Chef Collection, and having old Xbox games on the one, this is perfect.

There’s a more recent video somewhere,I can’t remember who made it,but explained why it was so big in the first place. It was not on purpose. It had something to do with a patent that Nintendo had,so they had to improvise. Either way,I still like the Duke and a much improvement,that rose from the ashes of the Dreamcast.

gamecube controller did that kind of stick design before Xbox. GC released in Japan in Sept 2001, Xbox was Nov 2001 in the US

Still small for me, but a lot better than other controllers. I always liked using this controller in middle school cause my hands were already larger than most men, and everyone else abandoned this controller because it was far too big. Now if only my big hands and feet had a use other than making it hard to find shit. Size 16 feet, SMH. For reference.
My OG Xbox only has the big ones. I loved them.

Pretty sure they released it because they were now enabling original xbox games to be played on the Xbone. I played Jade Empire the other week and forgot the original controller had black and white buttons.
I used the duke with tiny 4 year old hands. Can’t wait to get it back.
Actually the GameCube controller released before the duke, and it also had non-symmetrical analog sticks.
The Duke is literally a Dreamcast with 2 analogue sticks...PlayStation gaming after long periods usually results with a hand cramp for me and a buddy who was a game tester for EA back in the day, used to get a blister on his thumb after long PS2 testing sessions. I prefer the S, but the Duke is okay.

I’m glad I was late to the game with the original Xbox. I never had the dumpy controller lol. I had the halo 2 green Xbox and controller.
Xbox controllers are the greatest. Sony's controllers are very small, and after long sessions of play my hands kill. The PS4 controller is much better than the PS3. But the number 1 controller is the XBOX One hands down.
I think all the Xbox controllers are awesome I have all of them from the Duke to the Xbox one s controller,their just so naturally comfortable

I would totally buy this if Xbox emulation on the PC was a thing... but it's not. =(
It's unfortunate as every other 6th gen console (PS2, GC, DC) can be emulated at full speed on the PC.
Parker Brooks the original xbox was basically just a whole bunch of pc parts put together so theoretically you could buy the pc versions of the games or look into xbox emulation or the xbox one xbox one s and xbox one x all have backwards compatible games with both xbox 360 and original xbox just some few helpful tips and stuff from ya boi Leviathan

Most controllers are way to small; I have to use my index fingers on the bumpers, and middle fingers on the triggers. Have a similar issue with mice, as they don't seem long or wide enough.

The Nintendo GameCube didn't have symmetrical thumbsticks either, but the Original Duke did have similar sized thumbsticks unlike the GameCube's smaller c-stick.
fun fact the led up screen was supposed to have it but do to money and tech at the time it was unused.

I preferred the S controller when it came out, it was perfect....HOWEVER nowadays I'm not a teenager and have larger hands. I'd like to try the Duke again, the thing could probably kill someone.
I would have bought this if the expansion slots were kept and/or adapted to a new purpose ie. mUSB passthroughs or separate mic and heaphone jacks. Missed opportunity, and the LCD screen is a waste of manufacturing budget resulting in an unpleasant price for a WIRED ONLY controller.
Shame, as a large handed fellow I loved the Duke. Not for everyone by any means, but for large handed people it's sublime.

You should be playing a Halo with this baby a real game lol. I remember it being in demo units back in the day as well and it was one of the reasons I decided to get an Xbox over the PS2. I got my controller pre-ordered and can't wait for it to finally arrive at GameStop. The employee said hopefully by the 15th so I got my fingers crossed that the date is legit.

I actually liked the Duke but I don't think I'd want it for my Xbox One. I don't see it clashing with new games well IMO.
I use it as my main controller, won many counter strike and warzone battles with this beast

As a fella' cursed with small-ish hands, I always hated this controller. Huge, clunky, awkward to hold and awkward to use. But, now that I'm older and seeing this 'remastered' controller, I kinda wanna try it now.

Eleonora Ruzza You know its the best because when smash came out for the wiiu gamers demanded to have the gamecube controller, so they teamed up with hori to make it. It is 20? Some odd years old and still today its the best out there. Some gamers like myself think the pro controller for the switch is nice and all, but they should what sony does and keep the same designs (when it ain't broke.) When it come to thier controllers. Many still want the gamecube controller. With one of the older nintendo switch software updates seeing you can use the gamecube controller on the switch most of us knew smash will be out soon. And sure enough there was a trailer for it saying it will come out soon.

No actually the GameCube and Xbox released at the same time but lets be serious the GameCube controller was pretty bad I mean can we even call that little nub thing they called a C-stick an actual analog stick lol? No but seriously I couldn't stand the GameCube controller the 1st time I put my hands on it thought I was getting trolled by Nintendo it was sooo damned small I mean who did they think would be playing the GameCube toddlers? Thank goodness for the Wavdbird controller it was much bigger then the Original pad and actually fit in the hands. Still had that Ridiculous D-pad though good lord it was so tiny.
