  • When i first set out the hydro system making a proper intake was low on the priorities as i wanted to test out my maths and see how everything worked first. Now i am happy with everything i am keen to spend time fine tuning the intake to maximise head and maximise flow by not having to clean a blocked intake.
I gained around 800mm of head and because i am now higher than a low spot i should solve the air being pulled in to the system problem. Hope you enjoy the video.

If I remember correctly, this color of wood is our famous Brazilwood.
It is a very beautiful and resistant wood, I am impressed to know that you still find it being demolished, it is a shame that it is used for this purpose, this wood makes special furniture, but unfortunately it is endangered, I have planted some , within 30 years I will have a forest of it.
    Excellent job❤

7:50 - If nothing else, it'll keep you cool! If a little dirty... and Kris, it's so much fun to watch you solve issues as the come up. In the USA we used to be good at solving problems as the arose, but now way too many people want someone else to fix their issues. It does my heart good to see a young man who's not afriad to get dirty, to work hard, to solve whatever problem is at hand. And then reap the rewards. Keep it up lad, you are a great motivator.

You made that look so simple! I can see the amount of thought and hard work that went into it. And as you always do, you have added a little bit of beauty to this glade using materials that don't degrade the land, are built to last and respect the borders, thus adding diplomacy to your skillset. Thank you for brightening my evening!

Great to see our West Australia old timbers being used for something good..not firewood. The drill must have some serious grunt to drill old sleepers as they harden more with the trains over them.
    Love your work!👍👍🍺

Thank you for this video. That Jarrah wood is amazing stuff. Back in 1995 I bought five Jarrah wood sleepers to use as the foundation of a wooden shed (topped with second-hand scaffold boards). Those sleepers had already done goodness knows how many years of service on the London Underground railway. In 1997 I moved house, shed and all, and in 2003 I moved again but this time put the shed on a concrete slab so the sleepers were stacked up as a retaining wall to support the soil I'd removed from the shed foundation. Then, in about 2015, I wanted to make a new mantelpiece for our living room. I couldn't afford new hardwood prices so my wife and I cut the best of those sleepers into slices and a friend put them through his planer/thicknesser. Two slices joined edge to edge made the mantel and a couple of offcuts made a pair of brackets. I treated it with oil and it looks really good - you'd never think that it had such a demanding earlier career!!

This video was the first time I had heard of Jarrah wood. It looks like absolutely incredible stuff. I just built a chicken run, and that Jarrah makes my pressure treated timber look like amateur hour.

I have written this before but feel I can not write it enough times. Kris you are an articulate, hard working and intelligent young man. Your drive, enthusiasm, knowledge and perseverance are legendary in my book sir. If only more young people these days had those qualities for other things like what you do instead of video games, partying and getting high. Then I could rest assured that the next 100 years are safe and secure. I blame most social ills of our world on the television and the media, the modern day version of bread and circuses.

@@wendyweaver8749 I know each generation makes claims that the current new generation is the worst, I have heard it over and over. I must say I believe this current generation with the small exception of a few is the Stupidest and laziest generation to have walked this earth so far. Dont worry once we have another great depression it will more than adequately thin the herd. Think of it no more internet, or cell phones and easily obtained food. One of the main reasons my Grandparents survived the depression was because everyone grew their own food, or at least knew how to do so. Hard times are coming and I do not wish this on the kids of today, I get it that its not all their fault. We previous generations are to blame, in wanting to make it easier for our children we made it too easy. Now if something dreadful happens most will not know how to cope with and survive it whatever it might be.

@@kfgrip I tend to agree with Wendy, it not right to blame anyone in my opinion. The nature of humans and the environment that the current generation finds itself living in is basically evolution at work. We try to do the right thing (another judgement) but it is arrogant to think that we can steer the course of humanity. There will always be those that will manipulate and misuse whatever they can for their own advantage thus derailing most well intentioned plans... It is a roller-coaster ride not a merry go round.

Reality based in facts and reason only leads down a road where the outcome is NOT all sunshine and rainbows.

@@kfgrip Point taken Poparod. Reading your comments again from a non reactive perspective I am in agreement with most of what you say. Also my reactive self wants to lay blame for depressions, which are largely caused by older generations but they too are part of that human evolution.
I guess for me it just seems a shame to focus on the the shortcomings of people who have to live their lives in a system that they did not create. A system which expects miracles of productivity and ingenuity and yet ignores the shortcomings of itself. It does work for a few but there are generations of blood that have been manipulated and exploited ruthlessly...
At the end of the day Facts are often just another way of shutting people up. For example scientists used to be the foundation of facts but they have always done their work in some groups interests. Just because they might wear white coats and work at the leading edge of research does not make them saints, far from it.

When I built my waterwheel dam I included a cleanout in the bottom of the dam. It worked well to drain/divert water during dam maintenance and collection installation and maintenance. I also used it during construction so I wasn't racing to build before the water rose. I even built a small dam upstream of the actual dam where water was collected and ported past the actual dam site through the cleanout so I was actually digging in dry ground.
I realize you were trying to preserve water for the viewers the whole time you were building it though!

What I did with mine is, I have way more water flow... It is a natural spring running out of a mountain. And besides using it for power I also use it for drinking water. I have a silt and clay build up problem after 2 years. Before I had this brainstorm, it would take 3 to 4 days to shovel it all out... and the water is 55 degrees F all year round. So it isn't fun standing in it without insulated waders... And even then, it's not fun...
I rebuilt my dam and spring house and ran 8 - 4" 10' pvc sewers pipes in the bottom. 4 in the spring house and 4 behind the dam. With 90's glued on, on the inside of the holding pond behind the dam so I can reach them from the top of the dam without getting wet. And I used 8 straight pipes not glued sitting in the pipes as the overflow control. It allowed me to build the dam without it washing away any of the materials. It is built of of big rocks with dirt covered with clay. And the spring house is all cinder blocks with a cement slab roof with a 12' access hole with a cement cover. And I don't have to worry about the dam overflowing and washing away.
When the holding pond or spring house gets full of slit and clay, I just pull the straight pipes in either part and 80% of the silt and clay gets washed out then I just scrape the rest with a shovel or hoe into the pipes. And stick the pipes back in.
In spring it takes 4 and 2 pipes in the fall to drain it.

Hi Kris, Dot, Snoop, hope you are all keeping as well as can be. Super job on your wee dam and a lovely spot for chilling out. This reminds me of Peter Andrews drought work in Australia rejuvenating land using dams. Hope you managed to get some time out after fixing the tractor wheel. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work.👍🖖😎😺🐔🚙🌈

Wow, an amazing project. Good lad Kris . Bet it was a bit nicer to work in the wooded area this week for the shade.

Amazing! I love your work and determination. I would love to go off grid and built my own place and live in the nature away from people. Maybe one day when the kids are out of the house.

Great concept with the waterproof strip, especially as you recycled one! I spend hours doing stuff like this and always think I'm a bit mad....makes me feel sane knowing there's others out there. I'm just building a dam on a natural spring to restore a wetland area, during lockdown this has been my only sanity!

Kris, great video. Get yourself an impact driver - much more torque than a combi drill, and would have driven those lag screws in, no problem.

he was using an impact driver later in the video. was took weak, he'd need an impact wrench for those lags.
