My family are farmers here in the PNW(Duvall,WA), and we sell all our produces at farmers market only. We don’t spray any of our produces and are not certified organic. It is expensive to get certified and being a family run farm it’s not possible. However, we grow all our produces with no spray on 25 acres of land, and we grow so much we only pick what is nice enough to sell at the markets. We grow our produces with the mindset that we want to provide the best vegetables for our customers without it costing them an arm or a leg. As a farmer, we don’t need to charge an organic price to provide organic grown vegetables. If you ever meet a farmer and wonders if they grow what they sell, just look at their hands. A farmers’ hand will never be manicured and soft during farm season. Some people will know all the words to say, but their hands will tell you otherwise.
USA uses chemicals which are banned or regulated in most countries so Japan probably doesn’t have to label organic because their normal fruit and veg is already healthier than USA versions.
just left the grocery store. cried because i could not afford $40 worth of groceries for myself and my grandson for three days. had to put things back. food insecurity is a reality for much of the country. if you can afford organic anything, consider yourself lucky.
I’m so sorry. Have you tried any food assistance programs like Snap? Food parntriea are great! Churches have them and the Salvation Army. I was poor growing up and it was hard putting food on the table for 7 people on 1 income or when my dad was laid off. My mom had to step up and work. Judy and Benji live a blessed life and they have always purchased organic produce.
Benji I live in Calif not sure about Washington but our framers market they pick up products from a warehouses the r not grown buy the ppl who r selling it I would check on that
I was always under the impression that fruits and vegetables that you didnt consume the skin of, didnt matter if they were organic because you werent eating the skin. I thought it was more important for things like spinach, berries , tomatoes etc.
I also use him as a resource for useful information but also be opened minded too when listening. Some of the things he endorses is for his own personal gain.
If you have the resources, definitely grow your own produce or buy local. You know the farmers, you know the faces, and you can trust the quality. Farmers markets nourish you with food, community, and love - that's very important for overall health. I've noticed bigger grocery stores tend to stock tomatoes and other foods before they are even ripe - just so they have longer shelf life! But that takes away so much of the quality and taste. As a horticulturalist, I have to say additives aren't always a negative, it depends on what they are. My theory is to purchase whatever you can afford and what serves your nutritional needs best. If you need something local and nutritious, go for it. If that's not available, it's okay! Life is about balance. Being mindful of where it comes from and if it is ethically picked and grown is key.
Organic doesn’t always mean better. It’s also not just about the label. It can be “organic” but not labeled because it’s home grown or grass fed, and people can’t pay for the label. But like the wax and imperfections you can definitely tell the difference. It depends on what it is. Depends on how it made or how it’s even transported. Great video! Both options are great!
I buy certain organic items but not all items because they are just too expensive. The grocery prices are definitely higher for you in the Seattle area than where I am in Texas. And they spray wax on apple as well as zucchini and yellow squash. I grow my own zucchini ,tomatoes jalapeños, yellow squash and bell peppers. And cilantro, rosemary and basil.
There are lot of organic fruits and vegetables in Japan…but organic vegetables are expensive in the supermarket😊…if you buy direct from the farmer which is not found in the supermarkets. They have a stall in front their house and it’s cheaper. I love to go around my neighborhood riding my bicycle around to look for veggies and fruits too…
Could be small because it’s a different garlic variety. Afaik, avocados are transported unripe. There is a huge ass avocado tree in the open lot next to our house. No one sprays anything, does that make it organic? It’s the long neck variety. So good with ice and condensed milk!
Here in Brazil we buy Yakult on our doorstep! It also sells in supermarkets but it has become customary to buy from authorized Yakult resellers straight to your door!!
The reason many of the "perfect looking produce" is without the blimushes is because they are raised in a greenhouse or has some sort of protection from the elements of the weather and the organic fruits and vegetables and produce has imperfections are in the open and , most of it is and birds , bugs, and things can get to it and make dents in the fruits , and deer and squirrels and other animals can't get to some of them also, and many of them Luke apples, oranges, lemons, etc will fall from the trees and get bruised, maybe get run over by a lawniwer or hit by a weed eater and will have blimushes, but stillin good shape.
Free range chickens and pasture raised chickens means basically the same thing. But usually when it says pasture raised it's a big farmer and they have tons more space for the chickens. My dad had free range chickens and had about 5 acres if land dedicated just for the chickens, but they had actually also had access to about 30 acres total and they could eat all kinds of bugs, grass seeds, corn, beans and whatever crop was planted, worms, and I had become friends with one of them and I named chili chiku and it was a rooster and he lived tomatoes and todties corn chips. He didn't like the store brand corn chips. He was bougie. Lol... ❤️❤️❤️.
So informative! I enjoy your grocery vlogs please keep it up. I usually buy half and half (non organic and organic) since it can be quite expensive. I also just came back from Japan and definitely noticed the price difference.
I pick and choose my battles with organic, during farmers market season always buying local produce. When shopping at the grocery store I follow the dirty dozen list. Gives 12 must buy organic and 13 clean that you can safely buy non organic. Every year halfway through they (ewg) update the list. I screenshot the photo of the list and keep it on my phone to have on hand.
@@traviswhite771 google “dirty dozen 2024” every year they update it mid summer and it’ll be good until the next summer. It changes every year but some stuff is always on the dirty list like strawberries and grapes. I google dirty dozen and then go to google photos and screenshot the list to save on my phone.
I've only seen a few produce/items in Japan that have "organic" labels. I would like to believe that their quality standard is higher compared to the US. Here in the US, I have to buy A2 milk because regular ones bother my stomach. However in Japan, I drink regular milk and it just sits fine. I also noticed the color of their egg's yolk. Even a regular white egg have a better color than the US ones.
Here in Germany I buy my lemons organic because I want to use the skin. Apples and other fruit I buy in season and local. Bananas organic because they taste better!
A misconception about buying organic in the US that I wish more people would recognize is that organic produce can still be grown with pesticides, they just have to be “organic”. Okay so I eat according to what’s available to me. In the midsouthern part of Norway, we deffo have lots of veggies in August/Sept, but obvi in the winter/spring time, what’s being sold is either winter stock stored to sell, or imported from the Netherlands (not good quality), Morocco, Egypt, Spain. But even if they’re imported, they are not nec in season in the origin country. I am vary of that. I buy what the actual season gives me. Otherwise I buy frozen. Esp with fruits and berries. I defitnely got into organic from watching Benjis videos, I love that Costco has a lot of organic options more than Sam’s . There’s defitnely a taste difference .
I try to buy organic when I eat the skin of fruit. (i.e. apple, strawberries, grapes, etc.) I don't buy organic when I peel the skin like banana and oranges.
I can't speak for Japan, but for South Korea, I think the only time I saw ''organic'' was products for kids (fruit pouch, meals, formula, etc). Honestly, I don't think Koreans would care, if they do they just go directly to market/farmers easily and buy it there. I personally just go to farmers/local market if I want organic products (in Canada).
In Japan, you can find organic strawberries in the grocery stores with a placard of where they were grown and the farmers/farms name. They are much more expensive. I didn't look for organic produce in Japan because they regulate stricter than the US. (esp GMO) Europe does also. In the US, I only buy organic berries, greens, apples, eggs and chicken. I don't buy corn or soybean products in the US unless it is organic, non-GMO because these are the worst offenders. Also milk, but since I am lactose intolerant, I only use plant milk and that also has to be organic. If I am in Japan or Europe, I will buy non-organic yogurt and milk and it doesn't bother me. Makes me wonder what the US is doing to its dairy products.
I think Organic is kind-of just a gimmick. Like I get that they don’t use chemicals and the fruit and vegetables could taste a little better, but I’ve never bitten into a washed, regularly grown, perfectly ripe apple and thought it didn’t taste good. There are so many other chemicals in the processed food that we sometimes eat, im not sure if it really makes a difference with produce. Meat on the other hand, I think that’s good to get organic, etc but I don’t go after it - I’m always looking for deals and what’s on sale. Kroger and Aldi are my go-to.
To answer your question, organic is ALWAYS worth it. If you can’t spurge on organic, if it’s not in season, and if the regular looks fresher than organic, get the regular. I buy organic fruits, veggies, and meats. I do notice a big difference in quality, taste, and smell.

chemicals in the US are a lot worse than in Japan. So many items are outlawed in Japan and we continue to sell it and spray it here in the states. Also, the soil is so much better and nutritious in Japan than in the States. The worst things to offer your family is processed foods and esp keep an eye out for Judy's blood work. WinCo in Everett is much cheaper. I shop for some organic but it's not a big deal. Food at McDonalds and Chick Fil A are not organic lol Julianna used to ask "IS IT ORGANIC?!!!" a lot. She had an unhealthy obsession with food probably due to you Benji.
I wonder how she turned out???
@BenjiManTV 😂😂 I loveeee your response to this. Julianna is such a well rounded young lady.
@@BenjiManTV So far Julianna is turning out to be an amazing young lady. Smart and talented. I am glad you take the girls to McDonalds so they know it's okay to eat non-organic foods. I think it's due to you in a good way.
