This is a false dilemma. We can be 100% Greek and 100% Cypriot, just like somebody else can be 100% Londoner, 100% English, 100% British and 100% European. The term Greek refers to our ethnicity. There is no such thing as "Cypriot ethnicity". The term Cypriot just indicates that we are from Cyprus, just like other Greeks are Cretan, Athenian etc. And just to clarify: Cyprus did not became an independent country because the Cypriots themselves believed that they are a separate ethnic group. On the contrary Cypriots fought so that Cyprus can be part of a unified Greek state along with all other Greek islands and territories. The ONLY reason that Cyprus is a separate country is because this was imposed by force by the British and the Turks, who wanted to isolate Cyprus from the rest of Hellenism in order to make it easier for themselves to continue to abuse our island.
@thcyprus What a stupid example. British people can’t be 100% British, we got Irish and mainland European in us. And nobody can be 100% anything. So don’t flatter yourself
Nationalist rubbish - nobody is 100% anything - do a genetics test - I'm part Cypriot Greek, English, Irish - possibly some french in there ... Your roots are where you are from - grew up - somebody may identify more in England with their region than being 'British.' If your born on Cyprus - and grow up in Cyprus - your Cypriot - doesn't matter if your parents are any other nationality - and you don't eat Greek food etc - you are forever connected to that land ... You can understand and relate to your Greek heritage and culture but don't let it be a source of division or turn to Nationalism - which is what helped cause much of the trouble in Cyprus ....

You are in some aspects culturally Greek (i.e language) and you have every right to be proud of that but when it comes to genetics and the mindset you are surely much closer to the genetics and mindset of modern day Syrians and Levantines generally.
OK this is something that I am facing a lot times as a foreigner living abroad and I say the following to whoever wants to know. Nationality: For Greek Cypriots, nationality typically refers to their legal citizenship as Cypriots, specifically citizens of the Republic of Cyprus. This nationality grants them the rights and responsibilities of Cypriot citizenship under the Republic’s laws, and it is internationally recognised as Cypriot. Origin: The origin of Greek Cypriots is their Greek ethnic and cultural background, which encompasses their language, religion (mostly is Greek Orthodox), and historical ties to Greek culture. This means that while they are Cypriot by nationality, their origins are rooted in Greek heritage, setting them apart culturally and ethnically within the broader identity of Cyprus. For example. I am not going to say I am Greek at the airport while my passport is from the Republic of Cyprus, or I cannot say my name is Cypriot when my name is Greek (and it is an ancient one too).

I have the impression not everyone understood the meaning of the question and some interpreted it as if answering "Greek" would mean "loyalty to the Greek state" instead of Cypriot state. And the man who said "otherwise, we would split the country in half"... Holy crap! It is actually split in half already.
I think everyone understood the question as this is a common debate in Cyprus. They just truly believe they are Cypriot, with loyalties to Cyprus. If you say Greek it means having a loyalty to Greece as it erases your ethnicity of being Cypriot. For example thats like saying someone born and breed in Monaco Or Belgium are just French just because they speak the language, no they are monegasque and Belgian.
@@aydogan.b0488 What are you talking about? There is no Cypriot nation! Native Cypriots are on their large majority Greek Rum Orthodox people. Our loyalty is to Cyprus, yes, but a Cypriot on their right mind would never deny their identity. Cypriots do not speak Greek by accident, they speak Greek because they 're Greeks. Native Turkish Cypriots are a minority of 18%, they should be treated as Cypriots having equal rights with any Cypriot, but that doesn't mean that 18% equals 82% which the Greek Cypriots are.
Weird history lessons you had. The whole the area was under Turkish Ottoman empire control, until Britain won it from them in WWI, and then gave the culturally Greek land to Greece or be run independently, but Turkey still wanted a claim to the land. Lord Byron gave all his money and life to helping Greece be free of Turkey.

@@Aren-1997 Yes, ethnicity is not nationality, for example an armenian who was born in USA, this one is an american citizen and is still an armenian because of the ancestry and the mothern language.
Even if Cypriot ethnicity from the Greek ethnicity of Cyprus emerges formally in the future, it will be considered as a separate Hellenic ethnicity than the Hellenic of the united Hellenes in Greece. In this case, the Hellenic branch will be divided in Cypriot and Greek (united). Cypriot will still be part of the Hellenic group of ethnicities and will always trace its roots there. It will be considered originally and historically Hellenic. Citizenship, nationality, ethnicity and common group of ethnicities are not the same. This confuses Greek people sometimes.
The native ethnicity of the island is Greek, with its roots deeply embedded in Greek culture. For nearly 3 millennia, at any point during that period, an Islander Cypriot would have most likley spoken Greek(though there were other small ethnic groups or even the island was controlled by foreign powers such as Venice) and been part of Hellenic world. The concept of a "Greek Cypriot" emerged later in the 20th century, result of capture of the island by the ottomans some centuries before and with the rise of the Turkish ethnicity. This distinction became necessary to differentiate between the native Greek culture and the Turkic Ottoman imported culture. It's important to note that this is a discussion of ethnicity rather than people. Turkish Cypriots were not necessarily brought from outside the island many were Greek-speaking Christians or Armenian islanders who converted to Islam.

"Cypriot" is a Greek word. It was first attested in the 15th century BC in Mycenaean Greek. So by saying that you are Cypriot it means that culturally you are Greek. ex. Homer in Iliad was referring to the greek goddess of love and fertility as "Kypria Afroditi" (Cypriot Aphrodite). Cyprus Mail is using the same propaganda of the British colonists who were trying to erase the Hellenic civilisation in Cyprus. Shame on them!

For them to be able to do that is a Testament on it’s own! There is a difference between nationality, language and ethnicity. The people who live in Cyprus are cypriot in nationality, but being “cypriot” is not an ethnic group. Being Greek or Turkish is, and these are quite different things. And the language generally applies to a certain ethnicity (I repeat, generally). So if you live in Cyprus and speak Greek, probably you are Hellenic, and if you speak Turkish, probably you are a Turk (although that means you may be a greek or a Kurd or an Armenian who doesn’t have knowledge of your roots....)

Quite an interesting video and topic. As an independent, foreign bystander, who who had the chance to live in the (Greek) Republic of Cyprus for more than 6 years, I would like to give my honest, objective and humble opinion. I personally believe that there is no such thing as a "Cypriot", at least from an ethnic, cultural and even linguistic perspective and context. For centuries, on this island there were two, separate, distinctive communities (κοινότητες) - a majority, which is evidently of a Greek ethnic and cultural descent and a separate minority of people, who are of Turkish/ Ottoman ethnic and cultural descent. Despite having shared this tiny island for quite a long time, both communities have neither mingled, nor integrated much with each other, as there are several essential factors in terms of culture, language and most importantly - religion, that prevented them from doing so. Even today, this is further evident in the current, rather unfortunate for both communities, Geo-political situation on the island, where you have two separate state entities ( the official Republic of Cyprus and the internationally, unrecognized state of the Turkish Northern Republic of Cyprus). Hence, if you take into account a person from Cyprus, who carries a Greek name by birth, was born in a Greek-speaking family, has been baptized by a Greek Orthodox priest in a Greek orthodox church, speaks Greek as their native language (be it Formal Greek speech or the Cypriot Greek dialect) and relates directly to the Greek culture, in terms of history, holidays, customs, etc., then this person is both ethnically and culturally Greek. At least this is my personal view on this topic - I do not think that one could speak of some kind of an autonomous, independent "Cypriot" culture/ ethnicity, which is separate from the overall Greek culture/ ethnicity. And again, the same argument could be made for a person from Cyprus, who carries a Turkish/ Ottoman name by birth, was born in a Turkish-speaking family, follows the religion of Islam, speaks Turkish and identifies with the Turkish/ Ottoman culture, traditions, history, etc. In my opinion, this person is both ethnically and culturally Turkish. Cheers!
I would personally identify as being Turkish Cypriot. I agree with your opinion but to put “Cypriot” at the end means having cultural ties to Cyprus. Me going to Turkey or having a motherland connection to it, is not the feeling i get, as the overall country as a whole has no significance to me other than a couple 100 years ago my ancestors were of ottoman decent. There are also big differences in culture from Turkish Cypriots and Turkish people, and im sure its the same for Greek Cypriots and Greece.
"Despite having shared this tiny island for quite a long time, both communities have neither mingled, nor integrated much with each other, as there are several essential factors in terms of culture, language and most importantly - religion, that prevented them from doing so" this is not true, before people were very mingled, Turkish Cypriots would speak Greek as well as Turkish, villages had mixed populations and people were friends across community lines. It might seem more divided since 1974 because the island was split in two, but if you look at maps of the island before the invasion you see how mixed it was. Many people who remember before the invasion talk about their friends from the other communities on the island. Many Turkish Cypriots, at least ones from the older generation, still say they think of Greek Cypriots as their brothers and sisters.
The term "Cypriot" as an ethnicity is fairly new. That's why there's so much confusion and debate. Originally, Cypriot meant Greek by default. A Greek that lives in Cyprus. Then there's the issue of T/C. Turks came to this land as invaders, as conquerors. They were never considered Cypriots, they didn't even consider themselves Cypriots. Of course now, a hundred generations later, they developed a "Turkish Cypriot" identity" , having been born in Cyprus. Oh also, the vast majority of the people answering " Just Cypriots" are leftists. The rest of Cypriots know basic history and biology, DNA cannot change. Even if you detest Greece, you are still Greek. Asking 5 people random questions cannot be considered a valid and credible research and the results should never, ever be taken seriously.
Please go and take a DNA test. I am pretty sure that your people are closer to the turks and middleeasternes than the original greeks. I have been to Cypriot. You all look middle eastern to me.
@@LeoniDAS643 That's how people around these parts of the mediterranean have always looked like. If you compare minoan frescoes, frescoes from pompeii, paintings from etruscan tombs and fayum portraits I'm sure you'll see how alike they are. Once you consider the fact the first settlers of europe arrived from Anatolia, and that the first places they most likely reached were the balkans and cyprus, it all makes sense. Modern Turks are also imo are neither middle-eastern nor your standard central asian, but rather they are mostly native Anatoli people (luwians, lycians, hittites etc). In the portraits of the first sultans you can see they have asiatic features, while the closer we get to modern times, they're indistinguisable compared to art that depicts people from the byzantine era. Then again, maybe you meant to say "they look *near* eastern" which would be downright correct
@@LeoniDAS643 The "Middle Eastern" Greeks you have seen are probably the descendants of Anatolian Greek immigrants but not everyone looks like them though. Genetics are important but they are not the only thing that determines ones ethnicity for example shouldn't the Arvanites who spilled their blood to build the Greek nation be allowed to become Greeks?
Even if Cypriot ethnicity from the Greek ethnicity of Cyprus emerges formally in the future, it will be considered as a separate Hellenic ethnicity from the Hellenic of the united Hellenes in Greece.
What if the referendum for Enosis led to Enosis? How would this question be changed? Would this question existed? What tune would we sing? What led to 95% of people who voted for enosis not be greeks today? Can people change their ethnicity in 67 years time? What defines ethnicity?

Turkish Cypriot here. I,ve been watching these videos for a while now. Since i was born i was always brought up with the idea of Cyprus being divided, and as i grow up now I see myself realising how much big of a problem this really is. My Greek Cypriot brothers and sisters, Turkey's presence in North Cyprus is strengthing day by day and all the properties are being sold to Russians, Jews and Persians that recently started migration to Cyprus. We must protect our beautiful island and look for a solution which can lead to a unification. If us Cypriots are too late, this unification dream can be impossible in future days to come. 0:01
Most of them who were born in the cyprus identify is turkish Cypriots, some of the turks who moved to cyprus after the invasion call identify as turks but the majority identifies as turkish Cypriots.
@Nicos Frangeskou turkish Cypriots were more like 25%, and their culture etc still exists and more importantly most of the citizens of self style northern Cyprus still identify as turkish Cypriots, not just turks and suprisingly the turks imported to cyprus afer the invasion are themselves are being assimilated into Cypriot culture. But i would also agree that the settlers can be a huge problem in the way of reunification.
@Nicos Frangeskou and to clarify i said majority of the citizens of northern Cyprus. I know they were a minority in the cyprus. I'll blame my english for that
@Nicos Frangeskou this may be possible, i have also heard some turkish Cypriots complain about turks( in the sens of turkish citizens, they also include ethnic arabs, laz people and kurds) coming from Eastern turkey, black sea region etc with a different culture. While the turkish Cypriots are quite close to turks in Aegean Region and Mediterranean region their culture is quite different from rest of turkey. I did nt think it would be that much of a problem but it apperantly is. But still i went to northern Cyprus last year and most of the people i met identified as citizens of the island with close ties to the mainland. Not the opposite. But ethnic and cultural tensions are apperantly a thing there too.
I think a more interesting question would be: Ignoring all practical considerations (like how would Turkey react to it), would you like Cyprus to be an independent country or part of Greece? Whoever is Cypriot and wants to give his opinion here is free to do so.
There were two referendums made in both sides of the island. Turkish Cypriot side and Greek Cypriot sides both asked to unite in "equal terms". Turkish side result was "YES", Greek side result was "NO". If politicians and all propaganda machines dont interfere there can be a resolution. But it would create peace which would hurt British, and the Vengeful Greek Politicians. So it is kind of a far fetched distant answer from reality. Chaos trouble and national division encourages a big brother intervention, so it wont happen anytime soon!

Cypriot would be the nationality because Cyprus is its own country independent of Greece. However, the indigenous Cypriots are an ethnic Greek population. Different countries that belong to the same cultural group exist all over the world. Greece is the dominant country of Greek culture in the world, although Cyprus is also of Greek culture. Much in the same way that Germany is the dominant country of German culture, although Austria is also ethnically German. An Austrian would consider themselves Germanic in terms of their ethnicity and culture, however not nationally German as that would imply they belong to the country Germany. In the same way that Jordanians and Saudis are both of Arabic culture, or Russians and Belarusians both East Slavic culture, or Iranians and Afghanis both Persian as some examples. Nationally independent however of the same culture.

The Ottoman Empire took Crete, Cyprus, Rhodes, Limnos, Lesbos, Most of the Aegean islands from Venetians and Catholics. The people are Catholic. But the Ottoman Empire is the enemy of the Catholics and the protector of the Ordodoks. The Catholics and Orthodox are in constant war between the Catholics and the Orthodox. Over time, the Ottoman Empire left the islands to the ruling of the Orthodox Church. Greek to Orthodox in Ottoman Time Muslims are also called "Turks". The people of the Orthodox Church must learn Greek. In other words, Cypriots and Greeks are different nations. The people of Cyprus and Cretan are not Greek people. :) Anyway, Cypriot Rum / Greeks learned Greek because it was affiliated with the orthodox Church. They called themselves Greek. Since Turkish Cypriots are Muslim, they learned Turkish and saw themselves as Turks.

Exactly.
Correct!!!!

What a stupid example. British people can’t be 100% British, we got Irish and mainland European in us. And nobody can be 100% anything. So don’t flatter yourself
Cyprus has both Turks and Greeks living innit actually.

@@taboulefattouch4744 yeah, hence the Cypriot part.
@@taboulefattouch4744 Not is "some " aspects, in ALL aspects.

What are you talking about? There is no Cypriot nation! Native Cypriots are on their large majority Greek Rum Orthodox people.
Our loyalty is to Cyprus, yes, but a Cypriot on their right mind would never deny their identity. Cypriots do not speak Greek by accident, they speak Greek because they 're Greeks.
Native Turkish Cypriots are a minority of 18%, they should be treated as Cypriots having equal rights with any Cypriot, but that doesn't mean that 18% equals 82% which the Greek Cypriots are.

The vast majority of Cypriots are and feel Greeks. This is a cherry picking edited video worthing absolutely nothing.

Κύπριος. Τί είναι Κύπριος;

Greeks and Greek Cypriots are the same thing in my opinion. We share the same language, culture, beliefs etc.
For those answering that they are simply Cypriots, I was wondering when and if the Turks attack their island again will they still be calling themselves Cypriots or Greek Cypriots?
There were two referendums made in both sides of the island. Turkish Cypriot side and Greek Cypriot sides both asked to unite in "equal terms". Turkish side result was "YES", Greek side result was "NO". If politicians and all propaganda machines dont interfere there can be a resolution. But it would create peace which would hurt British, and the Vengeful Greek Politicians' personal interests. So it is kind of a far fetched distant answer from reality. Το να είσαι Κύπριος δεν είναι ταυτότητα, απλά δείχνει τον τόπο σου.
Δεν καταλαβαίνουν βασικές έννοιες...
Κύπριος. Τί είναι Κύπριος;
Cheers!
U are absolutely correct in your position! Happy New Year.
"Despite having shared this tiny island for quite a long time, both communities have neither mingled, nor integrated much with each other, as there are several essential factors in terms of culture, language and most importantly - religion, that prevented them from doing so"
this is not true, before people were very mingled, Turkish Cypriots would speak Greek as well as Turkish, villages had mixed populations and people were friends across community lines.

@@LeoniDAS643 Who ever told you that the original Greeks look like Norwegians bitch?
They are partly middle eastern but most of them are predominantly greek, genetically speaking.

its already late.
Ask the same at the north side please.
youd get similar answers i know ive been there,,, but would be good to see
Most of them who were born in the cyprus identify is turkish Cypriots, some of the turks who moved to cyprus after the invasion call identify as turks but the majority identifies as turkish Cypriots.
Whoever is Cypriot and wants to give his opinion here is free to do so.
theyve done it on video............CYPRIOT
