Why plants produce nectar in some locations and not others

- Mark Fulford is an international consultant on Organic Farming. His farm in Monroe has hosted one of my bee yards for some years. Today we chatted about why the buckwheat next to my hives produce lots of nectar and yet I have had hives in huge fields of buckwheat that produced no nectar. Mark explains why and we discuss a lot of other companion plantings he does to help his farm and my bees.
I most definitely would love more conversations from farmers....good video
Noted!
Great people, God bless you
Thanks
Excellent information!!!
Glad you think so!
Excellent
Thanks!
Very informative! Great video
Glad you think so!
Thanks Peter, always learning new things ✌🏽
You bet!
nice to hear some one talking about buckwheat ... I plant a couple acres in buckwheat , sunflowers , canola ,with winter squash . and in my field corn , also some buckwheat and sunflowers , and more winter squash ... no sprays , cultivated with a tractor . and another couple acres in phacelia , canola , and sweetclover. Like you said , it gives the bees more ...
I wish I had a tractor!!!
What a lovely video.
I was so pleased to get the unexpected chance to shoot a video with Mark that I forgot to turn the camera on! We had to shoot it twice! So good of him to put up with me!!!!
I've seen honeybee activity on buckwheat be done by 10:30 or 11 in the morning.
Way earlier than I had been led to believe!
this is how all beekeepers and farmers should be
Could not agree more!
Thanks, this was great information. Keep it coming.
Thanks, will do!
Thank You for the info! I planted 12 acres of Hubam Sweet White clover this year and the bees are hammering it. So good to have something for them to work and make honey in the normal dearth period. It also fixes nitrogen. I have to check into the Sainfoil crop. Also thinking of Hairy Vetch. I want to get my soil more healthy as they had been in corn for years before now. Funny how just lately I have been thinking about if there is more nectar release in a healthy soil? Mark would indicate that there is. Thanks Tim
I wish I had the equipment to plant that much sweet clover!
Gotta love that yard
Yes I learn so much when I get a chance to chat with Mark!
Peter! Extremely informative. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Best honey around! We love your honey & are local residents :) Love your shop too! We stopped by last week & had some bee friends inside with us haha. Lovely little creatures! Honey bees are my personal favorite!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing. Great info.
Glad it was helpful!
Really enjoy the content. Lots of information. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Sainfoin for anyone else wondering what he said.
Great video Peter, thank you!
I’m curious what kind of “right kind” of phosphorus Mark was talking about? I’m definitely going to look into planting some buckwheat and sainfoin.
PM me for his contact details
I wonder if sainfoin is limited to more northern areas or if it could grow in NE TN. I may try getting some seed and planting some next spring.
Worth a try
I think I need to check out sainfoin now ... I may hat seen that around
Me too!
What was the name of the plant he was going to mix with the golden rod? I want to order some seeds for it? Very interesting video!
Sainfoin.
Hello! I'm from Argentina and hope to become a beekeeper. Your videos have been very helpful, any books or other sources of information you recommend? Thanks
Beekeepers Handbook by Samatarro and Avitable. And watch A Canadian Beekeeper's Blog on UA-cam
Peter very good and timely video. This brings up a question that maybe you or Mark can answer. I have my bees but also am a farmer and have soybeans. About all the wild plants in the area are done blooming but my bees are finding nectar somewhere because they are drawing comb although not as heavily as in May and June. Could it be the soybeans? They are loaded with blooms. I have been told that soybean honey is common down south but not so much farther north where I am. What have been your experience with soybeans. Also as Mark talked about I do fertilize with a foliar fertilizer on the soybeans.
I have no experience with soybeans but its sounds like they are the likely source. When Mark is back from a trip I will ask him.
PM me on facebook The Bee Whisperer and I will give you his email.
Mark fulfird's contact info? I'm after a reading list or papers on his subjects he discussed in this video. I'm located in East Tennessee, Southern Appalachians.
PM me or email and I will send it
