I did it like this, I took 2 frames of brood from the bottom, and replaced them with the empty frames comb. Slapped the queen excluder on it and placed the 2 brood up top surrounded by 8 empty frames worked like a charm.
The good news might be if you do get swarm cells, you can harvest them into 3 way mating boxes over a screen board? All of the 10 frame deeps we are building now are with divided groves for ether 3 frame or double/Nuc configurations. Will be interesting to see your results Peter.
I am doing 2 hives in the same manner as your experimental hives here in MN. My thoughts were these two were smaller hives coming out of winter and I put on the excluder two weeks ago. In their last check they were getting the nest organised it seemed. Since a queen can't outlay a single deep mathematically it shouldn't make a lot of difference - if they have time to arrange the bottom box?? Maybe? I will be checking them for swarm cells every week for awhile to make sure they don't swarm.
Hello Peter ya I had more trouble with swarms this year 🤷♂️ but I was able to catch all them but one and it was the biggest one . I have been wanting to go to the single brood but I am still a little scared to try it . Most of my hives are 8 frames and I have been running a deep and a medium brood system. I have heard from several people by running single I would have a better honey season . Is that the same reason for you going to single brood. I enjoy your video’s Peter and the information. Thanks
Using this method, do you think you could possibly just equalise by taking excess brood out, and putting drawn comb straight in. More work, yes, but that would in theory stop some of their swarming impulses? I’ve been thinking about this topic for a while, because, like you, I usually double brood, during build up, and then single brood during honey flow.
Have you ever had issues with utility companies spraying the power lines in your area? Didn't know if you had any recommendations I'm in NH and they will be spraying soon.
Its been proven mathematically that the queen wont likely run out of room in a single 10 frame brood box, even if she lays close to 2000 eggs per day. Have you found this to be the case?
Peter, so let me get this straight, You only leave the queen excluder on for 10 days with Double Brood management? Then go back move the queen down and put the queen excluder on?
In this particular case thats how it will probably work out....as I said I was a bit behind with these and would rather have had them as double deeps for 3 weeks or more but the reduction to single deep is dictated by the honeyflow.
Well I wish I would have finished watching this video before I ask the last statement and question. I have tried to watch all your videos but I guess I am not allowed to miss one and I guess it really bothers you for someone to ask I simple question and yes I run both excluder and I can tell a difference in them just thought I would ask if anyone else out there saw any difference. . Sorry I bothered you with a question I guess I will stick to the professional bee keepers that does not mind helping other bee keepers out ..
Interested to see how it works for you. Thanks for sharing!
Me too!

While editing this i thought I should have done that with 8 of the 16!
I'm excited for this experiment. Thank you!
Thanks

I might do that.

I suspect thats right...as long as the deep isn't already blocked up to much with honey.

I would try some variation with some hives. The more hives you have the more option for experimentation.

Yes I reffer to it as equalization but I think its the same thing.
move 5 frames from the bottom to the top put all in center put empties on out side leave honey down for them to move up
I would like to hear more of your views as to what you find.
Have you ever had issues with utility companies spraying the power lines in your area? Didn't know if you had any recommendations I'm in NH and they will be spraying soon.
Not yet. I hope that as this is on private land that I would be warned.
To keep the bees just in single chamber, will it coz to high risk of swarming?
If your timing is wrong, yes, if you get it right no.

I don't see a top entrance for access/ventilation on the top hive body?
Fair point I did not plan to have one but the seal at the top is not great and bees can get in and out.
Were these hive this year nucs or over winter hives?
Nucs stocked a bit later than I had hoped. Over wintered would have been two deeps for months already.

I dont know why you are annoeyed but would be interested to hear what differences you observed.
